Community Garden Gets a Makeover

Canungra’s Community Garden will get a makeover as new caretakers Cassie Reed and Danielle King revitalise the Garden coming into Spring. Located on Lamington National Park Road, behind the Canungra State School grounds, the community garden, known as Canungra Village Garden, was established in 2016 by a small group of volunteers. Cassie and Danielle took on the caretaking role after a call out from Alexandra Griffiths on social media. Alex was one of the driving forces behind the community garden’s establishment, but with her business growing, it was time for someone else to oversee Canungra Village Garden. Danielle became involved the neighbourhood garden, ‘Witheren Gardens’ Facebook page administration and says she will be working with people in Witheren to grow both gardens to their full potential. “We hope to continue to extend the Garden in line with the plans that were developed when it was first established,” said Danielle, “What is there now is a quarter of the potential. We would like it to be a space, not just for a garden, but for people to go to for picnics and to socialise.” “The Garden is another avenue for people to meet, connect and gain a sense of togetherness. This is something we think is very important, especially given the events that are happening in the world at the moment,” she said. Danielle and Cassie have plans for the garden to be an interactive space with paths for wheelchair access and planting and potting tables to make the garden accessible and enjoyable for everyone. “In conjunction with Witheren Gardens, we will have a stall for swapping produce and plants,” said Cassie, “It is important that the Canungra Community Garden is sustainable in terms of the work required to maintain it as well.” Cassie said anyone is welcome to come and help out at the Canungra Village Garden at any time. “We want as many people as possible to be involved and will be relying on support from the community to maintain the garden and help with projects,” she said. For more information about the Canungra Village Garden, visit the Facebook page or go along to the working bee on Saturday 15th August from 8am at the Garden.

Parking Problems - What’s the Answer?

Businesses, residents and tourists alike have been frustrated by a lack of parking in Canungra. The situation has been exacerbated by the number of people visiting the area since COVID-19 regulations have restricted movement of people within South East Queensland. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President Monique Morcus met with Council representatives on Wednesday 29th July to assess the situation. “We discussed some 15 minute parking spaces, disabled parking, and increased signage for the carparks at the Canungra School of Arts Hall and Lions Park,” said Monique. Monique said she hoped for a positive outcome from Council to take pressure off the parking in Christie Street. Rebecca Torrens of Canungra Hardware said some customers told her they have driven to other produce stores because of the lack of parking. “We just need a 15 minute parking bay or loading bay outside,” said Rebecca. “Most of our customers come in to get feed or equipment so they don’t need to park for hours but we know we are losing people

Lauren Phillips of Canungra Hardware.

because they ring and say they couldn’t get a park so they are gong elsewhere.” “We even had one customer ring Council to tell them we need a 15 minute parking space outside the shop - he was so frustrated.” Local residents stated in Facebook posts that they avoid coming into Canungra on

weekends due to the traffic problems, but that the Canungra School of Arts carpark and the Lions Park carpark were often empty. Monique Morcus said she encourages visitors and business owners to utilise these car parks until a solution can be found.

Raising Funds for The Kids Cancer Project

In November 2016, Carlie and Danny Simpson’s newborn daughter, Blakely, was born. “Within minutes she was taken from us and then we received the phone call no parent ever wants to hear,” said Danny. “The next 24 hours was a blur of CPR, emergency procedures, blood transfusions and massive amounts of drugs where we ended up firmly entrenched in the Intensive Care Unit. Sitting there in the corner of the room with more than 25 medical professionals fighting to save this little one’s life was one of the most surreal experiences.” On 16th December 2016, Blakely was diagnosed with a form of cancer so rare, the doctors had no idea how to treat it. Today, Blakely is three and a half years old and has had more than 50 general anaesthetics, multiple surgeries, more than 60 weeks of chemotherapy, hundreds of visits to the hospital for blood transfusions, line care, injections, antibiotics, scans and emergency visits. Danny says Blakely has now been cancer free for longer than she has had this terrible disease for. The Simpson family and their friends have been raising funds for The Kids Cancer

Council

Extends

Scenic Rim ratepayers who are experiencing financial hardship may be eligible for assistance changes to Council’s rates and charges in response to COVID-19. Rates notices were issued on 28th July, and Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said residents and business operators have access to a range of assistance. “For the first time, Council has extended its Financial Hardship Policy on overdue rates and charges to include all ratepayers,” Cr Christensen said. “While previously this applied only to residential and rural ratepayers on their principal place of residence, it has now been extended to commercial ratepayers.” The Financial Hardship Policy has also been extended to include extraordinary events such as COVID-19, providing concessions for approved applicants with the suspension of interest on overdue rates and charges and debt recovery actions. Council is suspending levying of calculated interest on overdue rates and charges from 1st July to 30th September 2020. Although the adopted interest rate charged on outstanding rates and charges balances is currently set at 8.53 per cent for the 2020-21 financial year, Council has applied a 3.53 per

Rates

cent offset for all ratepayers on interest for outstanding rates and charges as part of its COVID-19 initiatives. This means an effective interest rate of five per cent will apply from 1st October to 31st December 2020. Ratepayers can apply for assistance under the Extraordinary Circumstances provisions from 1st July to 31st December 2020 and the relief period for approved applications will run until 30th June 2022. A discount of five per cent will be allowed only on current general rates if the total amount of all rates and charges, including overdue amounts, is paid by 28 August 2020. In addition to rates assistance, a discount of three per cent will be allowed only on current general rates if the total amount of rates and charges, including overdue amounts, is paid between 29th August and 28th September 2020. “These are tough times for many in our community and those struggling need to know that support is available,” Cr Christensen said. “We also continue to offer approved landowners directly impacted by the Scenic Rim bushfires in late 2019 the ability to defer their January and July 2020 rates payments until 31st December 2020.

The Canungra Times - August 2020

Assistance

“Residents and business operators wishing to access rates assistance as a result of the impacts of drought, bushfire or COVID-19 will need to make direct contact with Council.” The Queensland Government also provides rates assistance to eligible Scenic Rim residents. Ratepayers who hold a Queensland Centrelink Concession Card, Department of Veterans’ Affairs Pension Concession or Veteran Gold Card can apply for the Queensland Government Pensioner Rate Rebate, which offers a maximum rebate of $200 from their annual rates bill. To be eligible, the ratepayer must be the owner or life tenant of the property, which is their principal place of residence in Queensland, and legally responsible for paying rates and charges levied on that property. Pensioners already registered with Council and verified with Centrelink or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs will receive the rebate each year without having to re-apply, providing their circumstances have not changed. The Pensioner Rate Subsidy Application is available in the Customer Service Forms section on Council’s website.

Scouts Get a Helping Hand

Canungra Cub Scout Group recently put a call out on Facebook for assistance. Like many community groups, the Cub Scout Group’s income has been negatively affected by the COVID-19 restrictions. Cub Scout Leader, Drew Salem, said the Group’s Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, due to be held earlier in the year, was cancelled, leaving a big hole in their income. “Our income was never much to start with,” said Cub Scout Leader, Drew Salem, “But we use the money to buy craft items for the kids’ activities, supplies, food and so on.” As the restrictions were eased, Drew said the members were eager to return to the den, but the Group was Head Office to adhere to safety requirements before they could re-open. “We had to get electrics testing for plugs and leads; and Fire Extinguisher testing,” said Drew, “But these would require funds. So we put a message out on the local Facebook Canungra Community Group to see if anyone could help.”

George Dalby of G D Fire Services

“My phone immediately started dinging as messages came through and within 30 minutes Stuart Spalding from SKS Electical had offered to donate his time to test our plugs, and George Dalby from G D Fire Services, not only tested our Fire Extinguishers, but replaced them for free with new ones, as well as Fire Blankets and he even donated a laminator for our COVID-19 signs.”

George said when he visited the den he realised the Group was in need of a laminator and was happy to give them one, as well as his time and services to help the group. After hearing of the Cub Scouts’ financial plight, Simon Walsh from Canungra Hotel offered to donated all of their weekly bottles to the Group to cash in at Containers for Change!

Drew said he and the Cub Scouts are very grateful for the assistance the Group has been given by the community. Canungra Cub Scout Group meets twice a week at 3086 Beechmont

Road. The Cubs meet on Tuesdays from 5.45pm to 7:30pm and Scouts meet on Wednesday from 6pm to 8pm. For enquiries contact Leigh Bartlett, Group Leader on 0422 763 404.

Bushfire Recovery Funding For Environment

Three projects will receive funding to support bushfire recovery in the Scenic Rim and Gold Coast hinterland, as part of a bushfire recovery grants program. The program will focus on helping native wildlife and habitat recover from the devastation of the black summer bushfires. Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz said the Australian Government had made a $200 million commitment to the long-term recovery of Australia’s bushfire hit environment. “This first round of projects will assist the recovery of native habitats - which is particularly important for our world renowned national park environment across Lamington, Main Range, Mt Barney and around Springbrook.” “I was there on the ground after the fires, with the Prime Minister and saw first hand the damage in beautiful places like Binna Burra and Beechmont. “This damage was sadly replicated across Main Range, over the course of the large western fires – in Clumber, Moogerah and Tregony. “These recovery projects are about protecting that environment, improving it and making sure we have the habitats available for native species to regenerate,” Mr Buchholz said. It is anticipated the grants will fund surveying of threatened birds such as the Eastern Bristlebird and Ground Parrot. Specialists from Queensland University of Technology, the University of New South Wales and BirdLife Australia will work together, across the various national parks and state borders. “The experts will be engaged through Universities and BirdLife, and use specialist trained dogs to help find endangered species such as the Black-tailed Dusky Antechinus in Lamington, Main Range, Mt Barney and Springbrook National Parks.” “Much of our regional tourism, especially in eco tourism – hiking, camping and adventure tourism relies on these environments. This is an investment in supporting those sectors of our economy, but particularly getting those native habitats repaired. Ensuring the environment recovers from the bushfires is an important part of the recovery process. “It is going to take time, but this is an important step in making it happen,” said Mr Buchholz. In May the Government committed a further $150 million for bushfire recovery for native wildlife and habitat areas in addition to the initial $50 million funding. These funds will be invested in bushfire affected regions over the next two years.

Humans of Canungra By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography From Telstra Complaints Manager to working in the Prison System, Karen MacAndrew has had a range of experience in her working life. A health challenge changed her life and taught her that first impressions can be deceiving. Where did your career start? I worked in a bank in Sydney for 10 years. When I resigned I moved to Queensland and sold real estate on the Gold Coast. Right when I was cutting my stride in that business, the owner skipped the country with all the money and the commercial salesman’s wife. At the time I thought, ‘Maybe real estate’s not for me’. What did you do next? I worked for Telstra as the Complaints Manager for South East Queensland. Our team got the best of the best - people who were on their 26th phone call and still had no result. Eventually I got a redundancy, but by that time my health was suffering. I’d had a bad car accident years before and was in constant pain. I weighed over 100 kilos and I decided to take 18 months off work and work on myself. I’d read a book about the ‘Clothesline Exercise Program’. She started walking around the clothesline and that’s what I did. I started walking around the clothesline and gradually increased it until I was walking around Canungra. You were living in Canungra at that time? When I was looking to buy in 1996, I had a map of the Coast with about 1,000 pins in

Page 12

it. I couldn’t find anything that suited me. An agent said they had a house at Canungra to show me and I said ‘Where’s Canungra?” I bought the house straight away. The thing was, I asked him to stop in the main street and I walked up and down the street. I had three people say hello to me. I was a complete stranger and three people said hello to me. I thought ‘I like the feel of this town’. It felt friendly and relaxed and I thought ‘This is just what I need’. So after you recovered your health? I applied for a job at Palen Creek Correctional Centre and I got it. I worked in the intel office for 18 months. I had led a sheltered life until then and I wanted to learn about myself. And what I learned was I was terrified the whole time I was there. How did you go from there to massage therapy? I trained in massage therapy in Sydney and loved it, so I started a little business from home. I felt I was really helping people. Unfortunately I developed shingles in my face and head in 2010 and it was incredibly painful. I couldn’t work for several years, when I did I came back working in the real estate agency with Monique.

The Canungra Times - August 2020

Karen MacAndrew with her dog, Tess.

What is the effect from the shingles now? I have pain everyday. The pain can be so bad my skin is red and swollen. I had to cut my hair very short, because I found a compounding chemist who makes a cream I put on my scalp. Within minutes of putting the cream on, the pain and swelling eases. Unfortunately people think I’m some kind of punk. I’ll get out of the car when I’m meeting clients and I see them exchange a look, but once I start chatting they relax. We all try to work hard on not judging people and that was one of the things I liked about Canungra when I came here, people said hello whether they knew you or not.

Barriers a Danger to Wildlife

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor Finding solutions...

I’ve seen a lot on social media lately about the lack of parking in Canungra. This has been a problem for several years, and is made worse at the moment with the advent of what is really a double edged sword. While our businesses have struggled for the past 12 months due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, more recently the town has been inundated by people who now know where Canungra is! The support of people in the wider area is greatly appreciated, but it has meant that the traffic situation has worsened and normally busy cafes are run off their feet. One thing this town is good at is finding solutions, but how do you solve a traffic problem, when the solution appears to be out of reach? How do we find additional car parking spaces where there are none to be found? The Chamber of Commerce is working with Council to address this issue, however one has to wonder whether part of the problem isn’t poor planning to begin with. Canungra’s population is predicted to grow substantially over the next few years, but the infrastructure does not exist to support the existing population. We need plans, we need a solution and we need it now. Whether it is a bypass or substantial parking allocation close to the main street, this is no longer something that can be overlooked. Really, we need solutions.

Dear Editor, I, and many of our community members, are very concerned (even angry) about the seemingly unnecessary … correct me if I am wrong but no one I have spoken with can see any good reason for their being … solid barriers erected recently along sections of the Gorge Road [Beaudesert-Nerang Road between Canungra and Nerang] and beyond, including the long straight where the overtaking lanes are. Some thought this was to prevent further injury for motorcyclists – as a biker myself I would rather take my chances with a half barrier than break my neck on a solid one but am pretty sure, without suffering a heart attack or similar, that I would not fall off on that straight section? This is an absolute nightmare for our wildlife, not only the big guys - koalas and wallabies, but the smaller ones eg bandicoots and echidnas who have been left with no space to even get underneath. A local has already with a towel, lifted two echidnas searching madly for an escape over the barrier just this week. There must surely have been thought for rounded ended gaps in this structure if it was deemed necessary to be there and I think very, very poorly designed. I fear for the vehicle on the other side when a cute little stressed koala causes a reaction by a driver to swerve into his path and gets cleaned up. I can hardly believe that this has happened without at least some input from community or wildlife groups … (this helped, did it not when a ridiculously proposed second zebra crossing in town right on the junction was initially proposed). I fear also for the safety of wildlife rescuers who have to attend the wildlife that are injured / trapped / killed and need pouches checked etc, as there is next to nowhere for them to safely park or pull over to attend to these now unavoidable scenarios. I would love to receive anyone’s views, ideas, concerns - both sides of story and if you think these necessary, etc. All views very welcome to try to improve the situation if that is deemed to be a better outcome. Please email me bren.dalby@ bigpond.com. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Bren Dalby Canungra

Canungra?

The teachers grass carpark near the School. If the driveway was fixed up and the gates locked over night. The old Council Depot and Fire Shed? Glen Bartlett I think the most obvious answer to a simple parking issue would be make the bus parking zone along Kidston Street a weekday zone and that would free up parking for six or more cars along the park. Robbie Greenway We desperately need a by pass and some 15 minute parking zones. I would also love to see them advertise the existing car park built next to the arts hall with a big sign! Unfortunately people visiting don’t know it’s there. Lauren Phillips I’m sitting having a coffee in town now (Sunday morning). We always park in the Lions car park and this morning it was empty when we arrived. The School of Arts car park was also empty... Tracee Smith It’s quicker for me to walk to FoodWorks than battle traffic and the carpark sometimes. If I have to drive out of town on weekends

FROM

facebook or during school pick up or drop off times, I detour via Coburg Road. Calista Cameron I am a local in law..lol...I live at Clagiraba but constantly drive in Canungra (everyone probably knows me as the white car with the screaming dog, on his way for a swim! Then blessed silence). Yes the township is PACKED to the rafters on the weekends, which brings money into town but no spaces for the rest of us who wish to buy something for on the way home ... the ONLY option I can think of ... sadly at costs, is redo the parking ... from one car lengths to front nose parking, you would fit more cars in this way. Years ago in Mackay they did this option and actually was better flow, more turnover of customers who could stop shop and go again ... maybe have all motorbike parking clearly marked out the front of the new servo and same nose parking on the road there too.

I utterly LOVE the township of Canungra as it has the country feel still ... and we need the tourism. Karen Baker I try and avoid the main street on the weekend for obvious reasons. It would be nice to enjoy a coffee or breakfast at one of the local cafes on a Saturday or Sunday but due to all the motorbikes we avoid town altogether. Amy Pedler We’re the same - avoid town on the weekends unfortunately. Mandy McArdle Potter Zone areas for local only with car Passes down the Main Street and a bigger sign for the visitors for the car park up at the town hall. Jackie Briggs Getting onto Christie Street from the mountain is like pulling teeth. Ross Adam

Canungra Swimming Pool is set to open in the September school holidays under new management after a Scenic Rim based company won the contract this year. M K Training Solutions will manage Scenic Rim swimming pools in Canungra, Beaudesert, Rathdowney and Boonah from 1st September 2020. Company owner Mick Kajewski said although the contract is to open from 1 October to 31st March, they will open for the September school holidays. “We will be open 19th September through to the end of term one which this year is the beginning of April,” said Mick, “We find it is good to have those two weeks to get things going and take bookings for Learn to Swim classes.” “We will be closed for Easter, which is always contentious but it has never been financially viable to be open at Easter, we just don’t get the people through.” Mick worked for Jerry and Debbie Dansey when they had contracts on Canungra, Beaudesert and Boonah pools before taking the lease on the Beaudesert pool. “I was teaching at the Beaudesert High School and took leave working to work for Gerry and Debbie to see if I liked it before managing it in my own right,” he said. When Canungra pool’s lease last came up, Mick said he didn’t feel he had staff to manage the pools but this time he knew the time was right. “I’ve done a lot of work with Karen Nixon in the past, she is keen to keep running there so we put in for it and we told Council we had staff who know the community and have those links.” “There will be common training, expectations and pricing at all of the pools,” said Mick. “My role will be to promote and oversee the use of the pools.” Mick said Council contribute a lot financially to the maintenance of the pools which keeps the entry costs low for swimmers.

1200 Signatures Not Enough To Reopen Consultation

A Notice of Motion by Division 1 Councillor Derek Swanborough to have Scenic Rim Regional Council reopen public consultation on the Beaudesert Town Centre Revitalisation Plan has been denied. Following public sentiment against the demolition of the Helen Street Saleyards as part of the Revitalisation and citing the receipt of four petitions with over 1200 signatures, Cr Swanborough put the a Notice of Motion to the Scenic Rim Regional Council meeting on Monday 3rd August: “That in view of the concerns expressed in the community regarding the imminent removal of the sale yards in Helen St and the loss of history, heritage and functionality that would result because of the proposed new library and town centre development, that Council agree to do further broad community engagement on this proposed major development with a view to being fully satisfied that the community do not want to preserve, Beaudesert town’s rural character and heritage by keeping and enhancing the sale yards in its current location.” Speaking for his motion, Cr Swanborough said with 1251 petitioners, that Council strayed from its desired path and the community has spoken on this issue.

Division 4 Councillor Michael Enright spoke against Cr Swanborough’s Notice of Motion. He said a meeting between Council and local grazier, Sue Harrison, had resulted in Council undertaking to: • Review the time lines for civil works in the saleyard area regarding a possible lease extension;

The Canungra Times - August 2020

• Revisit the saleyards function and location; • Carry out an assessment on the structural integrity of the saleyards and ongoing maintenance should the saleyards remain. The Notice of Motion was defeated with Cr Swanborough voting in favour. Councillors Christensen, McConnell, West, Enright, Chalk and McInnes voted against.

Extension Denied for Bus Run Questions are being asked about a school bus route from Canungra State School that travels along busy Upper Coomera Road as the bus currently must reverse into oncoming traffic on Bracken Court, off Limerick Drive, to turn around. Concerned parents have been in contact with TransLink and recently contacted State Member for Scenic Rim Jon Krause. “Parents of students and residents alike cannot understand why a school bus must turn around at an intersection instead of driving less than one kilometre further along the road to turn around in a cul-de-sac,” Mr Krause said.

“I have spoken to parents who have been in contact with TransLink and were told that extensions to bus runs are only considered when the minimum distance of extension is at least 1.6km.” “As resident’s on Limerick Drive have said – with this rule, the bus route will never qualify for an extension as it is less than one kilometre from Bracken Court to the end of Limerick Drive.” “This is about the safety of our children – I have spoken to residents who have told me that when the bus reverses into Bracken Court to turn around, traffic is held up along Limerick Drive and makes it very difficult to

Penny

Bydlinski, Lisa Groom and Karen White. A number of new locals including health professionals, market stall holders, arts grant recipients and keen gardeners tendered membership applications – all keen to be part of the recovering Beechmont energy. The lively and positive general meeting which followed, discussed the completion of the newly

installed disability ramp, road access and off-road parking upgrades, grantfunded improvements to building structures, increased collaboration with Binna Burra Lodge and their planned Gondwana Festival in the coming months, growing market stall holder participation and a real sense of renewed energy after what has been a very difficult year for this community.

BPA President, David White

President David White concluded the meeting just after 9pm, acknowledging the terrific

support and high level of genuine interest and engagement from those who attended.

Eat local. Be happy @ Binna Burra Kitchen

“We love the concept behind Scenic Rim Farmbox,’ said Jonathan Fisher, CEO of Binna Burra Lodge which also operates the Binna Burra Kitchen (BBK) at the old school site in Beechmont. “While it has been born out of the COVID-19 lockdown period, I think the Farmbox idea will last many years after we get through this pandemic,” said Jonathan. “It’s not only a way of connecting Scenic Rim producers with city consumers but it enables places like Binna Burra Kitchen to help promote and provide an outlet for local fresh farm products.” “Also, when we can reopen Binna Burra Lodge in September, the Farmbox concept will provide a great new service to our guests coming back into the Binna Burra side of the Lamington National Park.” At the Binna Burra Kitchen, tireless efforts have gone into ensuring that the bulk of the suppliers are sustainable businesses, grown and manufactured in Australia and to the best standard. The Kitchen now has a small providore area which has a special focus on local Scenic Rim farm products vegetables, fruits, milk, cheese, meats and so on.

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby Well at last, and lets hope it continues but of course nothing is certain at the moment, the park is alive again with activities; especially welcoming to see soccer being played finally.

Dogs I would like to see the community respect the on leash rule again and utilise the dog park which was purposely built for all off leash activity. I understand bigger dogs may appreciate the longer run and as long as the grounds are respected and these ‘runs’ are brief and not when other sports are being participated in, we will overlook the situation should no complaints or dramas arise from this. However, in particular when we have Scenic Rim Dog Sports training in the park, for which they book and pay, please show common sense and respect and not have your dog in the park at the same time whether on or off leash. Not much to ask and I am led to believe some have refused to put their dog on a leash when they are training and I find this to be ignorant, downright stupid and unacceptable on any level. These are highly trained dogs but if some poor little fluffy untrained dog charges in to ‘play’ and cannot be recalled by its owner who hasn’t trained their dog and should never have it off a leash anywhere, I would

have thought the consequences were obvious … and not either of the dogs faults.

Skate Park

From time to time we have had a group of interested people form a sub committee with a view to upgrading and extending the skate park but after no time at all they have lost interest. I have always said I will back any group who wish to take on this project, apply for grants, liaise with council etc, but I will not drive it myself. I feel we may be making some headway again with a young local lady willing to push ahead and get this done. I would ask that anyone interested in supporting or helping please contact me on bren.dalby@bigpond. com with their views, ideas, enthusiasm – whatever you have! If we are going to spend a lot of money we want it to be a feature that is suitable to as many as possible. On this note we have had some stupid childish graffiti at the park that cost money to have cleaned off and puts a damper on any interest in improving the facility so please cease and desist if you have any respect for your friends, community and yourself. If anyone sees anyone at the park doing anything they should not be please tell your parents or police or Moriarty Park Committee as they will ruin any possibility of a terrific park project ever taking off. Graffiti has its place in a skate park if skillfully done and

is an art form in itself but nonsense vulgar rubbish has no place there or anywhere.

Trivia Night On Friday 4th September, we are holding a super trivia night (COVID situation dependent) from 6pm for 6.30pm start. This event will be in full support of The Kids Cancer Project and all proceeds will go directly to this cause, driven locally by our own terrific Simpson family. Tables of maximum of six ‘family’ members or if you are coming solo or as a couple we will group you in well spaced seating at a table. This event may become too big for Moriarty Park to safely hold so the School of Arts have kindly offered their more spacious venue if needed. The cost is $5 per person. BYO drinks and nibblies. We will be having a great raffle so please bring raffle money!! FoodWorks are generously sponsoring trivia prizes as always so a massive thank you to them!! If anyone has a raffle prize they would like to donate or can’t attend but would like to help out please contact Bren on above email on 0414 435 919 or 5543 5917. Stu will be doing the questions for us so a great night is in store . Moriarty Park meetings are generally held on third Monday of the month at 6.45pm. Please come along and see what we are all about.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful disorder of the hand caused by pressure on your median nerve as it runs through a tunnel in your wrist. Symptoms include numbness, pins and needles, and pain (particularly at night). Anything which causes swelling inside the wrist can CTS.

What

is

is the

Cause

of

CTS?

CTS symptoms begin when the pressure inside the tunnel becomes too high. This pressure results in your median nerve becoming compressed as it passes through. The carpal tunnel pressure increase occurs when either of two things happens: • Tunnel space decreases when the wrist swells. • When the contents of the tunnel enlarge.

Other Common Causes

Frequently, the median nerve is compressed elsewhere along its path – not in the carpal tunnel – and replicates carpal tunnel symptoms. Often, compression

fingers. Interference of their slide mobility eg scar tissue or tight muscles could cause symptoms. Your physiotherapist can assess your neurodynamics for abnormalities.

What

Carpal Tunnel?

Your carpal tunnel protects vital structures such as the median nerve, blood vessels and tendons as they pass to and from your hand. The palm side of your wrist has a band of strong ligaments and the rear of the tunnel is a curved compilation of the wrist bones.

What

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

occurs in your neck but can be anywhere along the nerve path to your hand. Healthy nerves have a supply of fluid called axoplasmic fluid, which provides the nerve with nutrients. Typically, a pressure of about 70 mmHg propels this fluid slowly along the length of the nerve. If the nerve is slightly squashed (eg by a bulging neck disc), then the flow of this fluid is interrupted. Your nerve will starve, and you may experience carpal tunnel symptoms. It is essential to confirm the site of nerve compression. Patients have had carpal tunnel surgery performed without benefit because the carpal tunnel symptoms originated from nerve compression elsewhere. Your nerves should freely travel along their pathways between your spine and your

CTS Diagnosed?

Your physiotherapist or GP will diagnose CTS based on your symptoms. Your doctor may refer you for nerve conduction studies or an Ultrasound Scan may reveal a median nerve enlargement. An X-ray may identify coexisting pathologies. Treatment will depend on the cause and is usually conservative. If you have these symptoms then it’s good to consult with your Physiotherapist to help to determine the cause.

Symptoms?

CTS sufferers will usually experience the following symptoms in their hand or fingers: • hand pain or aching • pins and needles • numbness especially at night with wrist flexing • burning • weakness or cramping • perceived swelling The symptoms are usually worse at night, and your grip will weaken as the condition progresses. Shaking the wrist may ease symptoms temporarily.

Subaru Forester Hybrid L AWD Review

Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au Subaru have entered the hybrid market in the form of the Forester mid-sized SUV range. It’s a hugely popular segment with a decent amount of choice but does the Forester Hybrid really make sense to buy? Before we go too far there are two different hybrid models in the Forester range, the L and the S, both based on the non-hybrid models of the same trim levels. We tested the L hybrid but as a comparison the standard price for the L is $41,643 driveway while for the hybrid $44,783. This price may not be a huge amount but when the trim levels are the same, all of the features are the same and the only add-on is the hybrid motor, the costs begin to not look justified. The Forester Hybrid is powered by the e-Boxer that produces 110kW@6000rpm/ 12.3kW (electric motor) and 196Nm@4000rpm / 66Nm (electric motor). Subaru say that this engine format can get to as low as 6.7 L/100km; I only wish that was true. It was closer to 7.2L/100km which is about what we got when we tested the nonhybrid model.

Subaru Forester Hybrid L AWD

When hitting the road the Forester Hybrid is capable in urban and rural environments. From the open roads to the tight inner city or mountain stretch, the Forester Hybrid does it all in comfort. It is the same design and basic layout and as an overall looking SUV, it is nice on the eye. When you get inside there are some rather interesting features. It is a pleasant place to be and in typical Subaru fashion, there is an explosion of buttons on the dashboard and steering wheel.

The Canungra Times - August 2020

The Subaru Forester Hybrid is a lot of car for a lot of money. It drives smooth and can handle a little bit of off-road use however you would want to be really careful when it comes to protecting the battery. The lack of fuel saving for the extra money seems more of a gimmick than a need. It is a hybrid and therefore should be saving fuel. Canungra’s History Queensland Country Women’s Association Wonglepong Branch By Joyce Libke The QCWA is Queensland’s largest and most wide-spread women’s organisation and the QCWA Wonglepong Branch is the oldest continuous women’s community organisation in the Canungra district, having been holding monthly meetings since 7th November, weather permitting. In 2020 members may have modernised methods of delivery, but hold fast to the original aims of the Association -- to support families, especially women and children whenever and wherever possible . My CREED is said at the opening of all meetings:I WOULD BE TRUE, FOR THERE ARE THOSE WHO TRUST ME QCWA members are there to support each other and others - locally, State wide, Australia wide and World wide. Our affiliation with ACWW allows us to extend the hand of friendship to 9 million women in over 75 countries. I WOULD BE PURE, FOR THERE ARE THOSE WHO CARE We all try to be our best as an example to all with whom we come in contact. I WOULD BE STRONG, FOR THERE IS MUCH TO SUFFER We all have difficulties - but QCWA members have the resilience, and with the support of other members, to not only cope with their own situations, but give support to others. I WOULD BE BRAVE, FOR THERE IS MUCH TO DARE Because there are jobs to be done, and in their concern for others, QCWA members learn to move beyond their comfort zone -- often taking positions within the Association thus learning new skills. I WOULD BE FRIEND TO ALL - THE FOE - THE FRIENDLESS Though at times difficult, we try to extend the hand of friendship and support to all. I WOULD BE GIVING AND FORGET THE GIFT We all spend hours making items - Country Bears, beanies, rugs etc for hospitals and nursing homes – crisis bags for refuges -- birthing kits and school supplies for Pacific Islands -- and anything else we find is needed. I WOULD BE HUMBLE FOR I KNOW MY WEAKNESS We consider others before looking for recognition for ourselves (but we do appreciate the occasional ‘thank you’). I WOULD LOOK UP - AND LAUGH - AND LOVE - AND LIFT The last line of the Creed can be our personal aim for each day:- Look up – be positive; find something to Laugh about (laughter is known as the best medicine); spread your Love around by supporting those you meet - and so Lift their spirits. ……………………………………………………………………………………… The QCWA Wonglepong Branch welcomes new members of all ages to their 1935 heritage listed hall at 2779 Beaudesert Nerang Road Wonglepong. Scenic Rim Regional Council - Comments Cr Jeff McConnell, Division 2 Councillor

Cr Virginia West, Division 3 Councillor

These are my own comments and do not reflect the position of the Scenic Rim Regional Council.

Council’s 2020-2021 SRRC Budget

The new Council is now three months into its four year term and we have just passed our first budget. Was it an easy task? No it wasn’t, we had to take into account the need for long term financial sustainability as well as the capability for ratepayers to fund Council Operations in such tough economic times. We were able to, with much robust discussion and compromise, achieve a small rates increase of less than 1%. Are our rates higher than our neighbouring councils? Yes they are. Why are they higher? Well we have a population of only 43,000 residents compared to over 1.2 million in Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich, which also have a combined land area that fits inside the Scenic Rim. The Scenic Rim Council budget is only $90M, with rates coming mostly from 94% residential and rural, and only 6% from commercial and industrial. Our neighbouring councils have a combined budget of over $2.2 Billion with rates coming from approximately 50% residential and 50% Commercial and Industrial. The commercial and industrial revenue base is a huge advantage to their having lower residential rates. But what do we have that they don’t - LIFESTYLE - the Scenic Rim is a semi rural region with most residents living on acreage and not on top of one another as our city cousins do. This is why they come down to the Scenic Rim on weekends to relax, enjoy our hospitality and envy our way of living. So how do we get our residential and rural rates down to a manageable level. We need to increase our Commercial and Industrial revenue base, and one way is by working with the State Government to open up the Bromelton Industrial Park at the same time that the new rail line is finished in 2025-26. This will require massive strategic thinking and coordination by the State and Council to ensure that roads, housing and community amenities are all available to sustain this growth. As our commercial and industrial rates revenue rises, only then we can reduce the high rates burden on our ratepayers that mainly fund the operations of Council. We can only do this by looking at the long term benefits of sticking together in these tough times to achieve our long term goals that ensure we maintain the semi rural lifestyle we all enjoy.

Contact Me I am available to talk with Division 2 residents on mobile 0436 327 434 or email jeff.m@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. Follow me on Facebook - Jeff McConnell Councillor for Division 2 Scenic Rim Regional Council where I post a weekly update. I am happy to meet with residents should they need a face to face meeting. You can contact Council on 5540 5111 (save it to your phone) or email mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au.

As this is my first column following the adoption of Council’s 2020-2021 Budget, I have included some comments from my speech at the 6th July Special Meeting. All budget deliberations are somewhat challenging, but this one would have to be the most memorable in my time as a Councillor as together our community has faced so much adversity over the past year and, of course, the drought and COVID-19 are still not over. As a Council, we looked at multiple rating models at the same time being mindful of our diverse and widespread population, multiple towns, the important principle of maintaining rate relativity and the responsibility we have to continue to build a strong and prosperous future for the Scenic Rim. This budget is one to aid recovery in our community and to assist those residents who are facing financial challenges in a number of ways. On top of bushfire and drought financial hardship provisions, there is now a COVID-19 Economic Assistance package. The budget rate rise of 0.89 per cent is lower than CPI which is currently 1.8 per cent. A less than CPI rate rise in local government is never recommended when council responsibilities are those of maintaining infrastructure and services that come at increasing costs. However, this year is extraordinary and together we need to continue to provide services to our communities, evaluate the delivery of these services and be mindful of the long-term vision of the Community Plan, which is underpinned by Council’s Operational and Corporate Plans. We do have a positive and prosperous future ahead in the Scenic Rim and we need to work together - community and Council - to optimise this outcome.

Community Grants

Council’s Community Grants, Environmental Grants and Regional Events Program are now open for applications and have transitioned to the online SmartyGrants process. I urge all community groups and landholders to consider these and, if you have any concerns regarding the new application method, Council’s Community Development officers are available on 5540 5111 to assist.

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch By David Day, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

Veterans Day

Saturday 15th August is Veterans Day in Canungra, where we acknowledge the Service of All Veterans, who have served in the Armed Forces since World War 11. Previously this day was known as Vietnam Veterans Day, acknowledging the Service of those who served in this Conflict.

Veterans Day Service will be held at D J Smith Memorial Park, commencing at 10.30am, followed by refreshments at the Bowls Club. The public is invited to participate in this service. It is coincidental that this day also commemorates the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Pacific, commemorating the Surrender of the Japanese Forces to end World War 11. This surrender was made by the Japanese Emperors’ agreements after the Atomic Bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Russia’s’ declaration of War on Japan. It wasn’t until 9.04am on 2nd September 1945 that a Japanese Representative signed the Official Instrument of Surrender.

Seniors Week This month, between 15th - 23rd August, we will be celebrating our older residents during Queensland Seniors Week! Each year this week long event enables older Queenslanders to engage with the community through a wide range of events. This year due to COVID-19 this will look a little different – with some virtual events. The focus this year is ‘Together: the stories of us’ aimed at celebrating and showing the diversity of Queenslanders. Whilst Seniors Week is a recognition of the importance of older people within our community it aims to involve people of all ages to work together to create age-friendly communities. How Much Can a Koala Bear?

Congratulatory Letters Do you have a significant birthday or anniversary coming up? I’d love to write you a letter to celebrate your milestone – whether it be a 90th,

This koala was found out in a Boyland backyard ‘stuck’ on a shovel handle. Local resident Melissa Hamilton said she heard him calling angrily and phoned Wildcare. “Wildcare said he was probably looking for new territory,” said Melissa. “They will travel for kilometres in the night looking and may find inappropriate places in the day to rest (our yard), so Wildcare moved him to a tree close by. Now he can sleep the day away and travel again tonight.” “The Wildcare carers were not only great at relocating the koala, they also did a great job of educating us on koala behaviour,” she said.

100th, 105th or 110th Birthday, or a 50th, 60th, 65th of 70th Wedding Anniversary. The year of 2020 has been a turbulent ride for the world as we know it. I have to say that when Australia went into lockdown in March due to the COVID 19 pandemic, I was so glad to be at home here in Australia. I was extremely lucky to get a visit into Norfolk Island in late January 2020. There were several bird species on Norfolk Island that are found nowhere else in the world. It is also home to an astounding array of seabird species. One seabird species, the Masked Booby, captivated me with its beauty and personality. The Masked Booby is a large bird with a wingspan of approximately 1.7m. Around Norfolk Island, no other bird can be mistaken for the Masked Booby due to its almost completely white body and dark coloured tail/wing feathers. Young birds have brown feather colouring from the neck up and around the tail and wings. There are three identified races of the Masked Booby which inhabit Australasian waters. These are birds of the open ocean and may be seen in areas well-offshore of Northern Australia. Masked Boobies breed on several islands off WA, QLD and Norfolk Island. I was lucky enough to see the Masked Boobies at varying stages of breeding including egg incubation and nurturing of young birds that would have fledged in the coming weeks. Nest sites of this bird are a shallow depression in the sand. I was fortunate enough to see birds nesting on Norfolk Island and Philip Island (just south of Norfolk Island). Masked Boobies appear to be common throughout their known range and I have also seen birds when I visited Lord Howe Island in 2016. The birds that I observed were extremely quiet as they are not harassed or chased on Norfolk Island or Philip Island. One thing that I always remembered was to respect the space of these beautiful birds and it was possible to get amazing photos even with a normal camera. I hope everyone stays well and for us here in Queensland, it will be the year that we stay in our own state to go out exploring. Maybe even a trip to Norfolk Island will be possible!!

A Splendid View By Susan Cully

Everywhere we look there is a splendid view. Our landscape sits on top of an old volcano, the Tweed Volcano. What remains we know as Mount Warning, or Wollumbin to the indigenous people here: strong and mighty, catching the clouds. The flanks of the original Tweed volcano form plateaus: Binna Burra, Tamborine, Beechmont and Springbrook. River valleys radiate from Mount Warning but the plateaus remain at the same elevation as they were 20-23 million years ago. What looks like a plateau, or ‘Mesa’ in a John Wayne movie, is, in reality, the gently sloping flanks of the massive Tweed shield volcano that covered an area from Lismore to Beenleigh. The geologic life of a volcano can be described by three stages of maturity: ‘skeletal’, ‘residual’ and ‘planeze’. The Mount Warning of today displays the skeletal phase, the higher elevations are all gone, forming an erosion caldera 30km in diameter. The features that A view of the Tamborine Plateau from the remain, the vents and ridges, exhibit Beechmont Plateau (SW Rd., Beechmont) the residual phase. Amazingly, our plateaus are in the planeze (meaning ‘flat’) stage. We are walking on a surface that is virtually unchanged over the previous 23 million years. The formation of our volcano is the story of a hot spot. Several volcanoes along Australia’s east coast formed as the continent moved north, breaking apart Gondwana. About 24 million years ago, our location passed over a hot spot, vents opened in the crust, various lavas spewed up, ultimately consolidating into the Mount Warning Volcanic Complex. The peak that we see today is just the core of that volcano, the erosion-resistant, solidified magma chamber. The original height of the Tweed volcano is estimated to have been 1800-2090 meters whereas the height of the present day Mount Warning is 1156 metres. Over the last 20 million years the original summit has eroded and washed away into radial valleys and rivers running to the sea. However on the Lamington Plateau Bithongabel, Wanungara and Hobwee still measure 1195, 1192 and 1175 meters respectively. (ref: W Wilmott and B Graham).

Bailey

Bailey is the sweetest little girl once you get to know her. She loves to have cuddles and purr, but she can be a little nervous at times and she acts all tough like a big girl. Once she is comfortable with you she will be your best friend and sleep by your side and keep you warm. Bailey would be best suited to a child free home as lots of noises and activity make her run and hide.

Wombat

The staff at AWLQ say Womba is the life of the party. She loves to wiggle her butt and loves to play, play and play some more. She would really like to be your one and only fur friend so she can have all the attention, and rightfully so after over 180 days in the shelter. She really enjoys keeping her brain busy with kongs, wobblers, puzzles and other sorts of enrichment - the staff can give lots of ideas on how to keep her busy. Wombat was hit by car one day and since then she has found the outside world a little scary, she is happy to go on walks but when she sees cars she can become a little worried. Please note: All AWLQ rehoming centres are currently closed to the general public and are operating via appointment only.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough The bell continues to ring on Sunday mornings and now we are also allowed to sing our hymns. This is part of the long, slow road to recovery we are all experiencing as COVID-19 still hangs over our heads. I have just completed a COVID-19 Infection Control Training course and the bottom line being emphasized is to keep washing thoroughly our hands and remember to social distance. These have been and still are frightening times but there are many things we can do to help ourselves avoid the chances of catching the virus. Being aware of the dangers and knowing how to protect ourselves means we should be safe. In the same way following the Christian faith includes being aware of what God will do for us and knowing how to follow his way. St Luke’s offers a warm and friendly place to meet others and to learn a little more about Christianity. It is also a place where, as Keer suggested in the July edition of the Canungra Times “Facing our fears” can be different for each person but we can start by being “Kind to each other every day”. Jan Armstrong and her enthusiastic assistants who are all Blue Card holders have established a fun afternoon each Monday from 3pm to 4pm at St Luke’s. Jan invites all students from Canungra State School to come along and join in with other “Little Lukies” to enjoy free afternoon tea followed by games, Biblical based storytelling, table activities and lots of friendships. Parents are welcome to drop their children off and return an hour later, or stay and enjoy the afternoon as well. From what I have heard the kids love the time at St Luke’s and it is an opportunity to learn about kindness, friendship and enjoyment. Feel free to bring your child along each Monday during school term time.

FORE Your Information - Golf Club News By Kim Sami

WE ARE BACK AND EVERYONE IS WELCOME!! The cool, crisp mornings are turning into beautiful days at the Canungra Area Golf Club making it perfect for a round of golf and a bit of platypus spotting. Canungra Owls Soccer Season Kicks Off! By Bren Dalby Photos by David Gill The season is up and running at last! We only have three teams this year but are delighted to say all three are having fun and doing well. Keep an eye out for our super Men’s team on Wednesday nights at Moriarty Park and come down for a socially distanced curry or box of chips. Our under 6’s are steaming ahead under coach Scott with two wins already (although at this stage they are not supposed to count goals … I guess perhaps we shouldn’t teach them to count if they are going to play soccer haha!!). They are loving their games and improving out of sight. Our power team Under 12’s came out of the traps flying with a first game win at home – see pic for some excited happy youngsters ! Thank you to the ever amazing FoodWorks for donating all the bacon and eggs for Saturday morning home games and to Canungra Hotel for offering the meat tray raffles every Sunday for the duration of

soccer season, or as dictated by any COVID changes. These generous offers by our community businesses make a massive difference to us always, but in particular of course this year and we are very grateful. Thanks to our amazing committee for hanging in there and working incredibly hard to pull everything together and make it work. Top job!
