Saving ‘Canungra’s Dog’

It was a social media post that galvanised a community - a dog abandoned on Upper Coomera Road, thin and distressed. Over the course of almost two weeks, locals put out food and water for the Neo Mastiff cross who looked at first like she might have recently had pups. She was first seen on 3rd March running down Upper Coomera Road after being dumped out of a white van. The driver who saw the dog running down the road wasn’t able to stop but alerted people on Canungra & Surrounds Community Facebook page when he realised what he had witnessed. She was quickly named ‘Kit’ by self confessed ‘crazy dog lady’, Cameron Arnold because, Cameron says, she was like a cat on a hot tin roof. “Cat became Kitten, then Kit,” said Cameron. A team of several locals left food and water for the dog, but were unable to get near her. “I sat with her until 1.30am,” said Cameron.

“She got used to me, but once I tried to approach her she got fear aggressive.” Cameron said over the course of a week, Kit started to trust the people who were looking out for her, but they weren’t able to catch her, despite traps being set. “It was absolutely insane trying to get hold of her. The first night I went to try to get her, I underestimated what it would take. I thought we’d take some treats and it would be fine.” “We arrived 4.30pm and were there till 3am the next morning, then went back at 7am.” “She was absolutely terrified of people.” “People were leaving food and a bed. Taqwa De La Warr and Nicole Gassner were going up there spending time with her.” Finally on Sunday night, Joanne and Sarah Linsley managed to coax her up their driveway and get a leash on her. They contacted Cameron to come and collect her, but getting her in the

car was more difficult than they thought. “When we approached her back end to try to lift her in she was very scared, she hasn’t had a good time of it,” said Cameron. Finally, they managed to coax Kit into the car and she is starting to settle in at Cameron’s home. A veterinarian assessment has been carried out and, while she was microchipped, there was no address attached to the microchip. Canungra Hardware are collecting donations for Kit’s care. Cameron said one of the first things will be desexing. “I’ve been overwhelmed by people wanting to help and trying to find out what they can do. She looks like she has had multiple litters of puppies. Kit is still nervous but is starting to come out of her shell. She will be given time to recover at Cameron’s home before a suitable home is found, until then she will be Canungra’s dog.

HUMANS of CANUNGRA

Chris Duncan

By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

It’s not every day you do an interview driving to the Coast to adopt a cat (or two). When I explained to Chris that I wanted to talk about something unusual about him, I didn’t expect him to say “Well, I died”. So what is it like to have an organ transplant, die and get better again?

We’ve done articles about your kidney and pancreas transplant, but now you tell me you actually died last year! What was it like to die? Really boring. Do you remember anything? Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? You know that scene in Harry Potter when Harry dies and he goes to the train station and meets Dumbledore? Kind of like that. You met Dumbledore? No, I went to a train station where everything was white. It was like a waiting area or loading zone. Then everything got snatched away from me because they hit a magic button to bring me back. Were there people there? Faceless people. Does that freak you out a bit? Not really, I’ve dealt with death so much through nursing and family wise, you hear

people saying there’s light at the end of a tunnel. I think because it was so empty and so white, it felt like I wasn’t done yet, I had something to finish. So what happened? I saw my specialist on the Tuesday, went home, slept. Felt good when I woke up and got worse as the day went on. At about 6pm I was sick again. I was in a large amount of pain and went to hospital. Turned out Kenny the Kidney was twice the size he was meant to be. They did a CT scan and said the kidney was no good, blood tests showed it was functioning at 3%. They gave me drugs to make me sleep. Must have been a bit too much because when I woke up they said “you do realise your heart stopped for like ten seconds during the night?”. They gave me some oxygen and a good

thump on my chest a bit and I came back. You weren’t done? No. The next morning the kidney specialist came in and said I was going into surgery in five minutes. They went in, found the kidney had flipped itself over, clotted itself off and flipped back over again. It’s a bit gray now. It flipped over and went back over again? How did they know that? From the CT Scan. When I looked at the scan I thought “that doesn’t look right”. Is it still like that? It is functioning at about 50 - 70 per cent. Half a kidney is better than none. So you actually remember the white train station? When they say I died for about ten seconds, it didn’t feel like ten seconds, it felt like a lot longer than that. I was there just waiting for what seemed like ages.

Chris Duncan Do you have religious beliefs? There is someone or something there. I was guided through private Anglican-Catholic school due to my grandfather ... I don’t know what it is or who it is ... I don’t know. There is something there with plans for all of us. When did this happen? The Show week. The week that was supposed to be Canungra Show week - but of course that didn’t happen (thanks to COVID). Chris has been heavily involved as a volunteer with Canungra Show and Rodeo for several years.

You have nicknames for your pancreas and kidney? Penny the pancreas and Kenny the kidney. Penny is behaving herself, she’s done very well, she’s always behaved herself. Kenny likes to float around and flip himself over. Apparently it’s rare, I’m one of three recorded cases. Westmead had no idea it could happen. You are a bit special! Yeah, at the hospital they just went “you’re a freak”. I said “you’re not telling me anything I don’t know”. The professor said not many people would have survived it.

Public Comment Open for Over 50s Village

Public submissions in relation to a Development Application for a proposed Over 50s Lifesyle Village at 7 -39 Finch Road, Canungra, can be made until 20th April 2021. The application is for a Material Change of Use for 188, two or three bedroom homes on the site. Over 300 residential car parking spaces have been proposed and 62 visitor car parking spaces. Project Manager for the site, Riye Arai-Coupe of Bluebird Property has been liaising with community members over several months and some changes have been made to the plans to incorporate community feedback. Submissions should be made in writing to Scenic Rim Regional Council. Council’s web site has guidelines for submissions, which can be a written objection or sup-

porting comment about a development application, made by any interested member of the community (for example, a person, group or organisation). There are specific requirements for submissions and residents should refer to Council’s web site for how to make a ‘properly made submission’. Further information about making submissions can be found at https://www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/planning-and-permits/development-assessment. Following news of the proposed development, Canungra resident Dean Meldrum wrote to Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk with concerns about the lack of water and road infrastructure in the township and was advised by her Deputy Chief of Staff to liaise with Council.

Malyta said her aunt currently has Leukemia and she has seen many family members on her father’s side battle cancers. “On my Dad’s side I have lost two uncles and my pop, so I really wanted to help,” she said. “My fundraising goal was to reach $560, but I have raised over $1400 which is fantastic.” Prior to having her head shaved, Malyta’s hair was half way down her back. She said it feels a bit weird to have it gone but she will grow it back. “When it grows back I’ll probably shave it again.” Photo: Malyta Wakefield has her head shaved by Demi Childs at Dem’s Hair Studio.

$250,000 Renovation Unveiled

My Country Escape reopened to a large crowd of eager customers on Saturday 27th March. The boutique homewares and clothing store has been closed for 12 weeks while local building company, Hobbs Building & Interiors carried out extensive renovations. Owner Michelle Roper-Dennis was overwhelmed by emotion as she thanked the community for their support. “This wouldn’t have happened without you,” she said. She thanked her family and said her husband

Cherie and Isabella Radburn.

Steve’s role in the business is akin to being the manager of the My Country Escape ‘girl band’. Built in 1957, the store is one of Canungra’s oldest commercial shopfronts. Present for the reopening was Sylvian Cameron, whose family built the store and former owners Geoff and Ruth Baldwin. The renovations feature stunning exposed timber trusses roofing, French door sets, a new floristry kitchen; all with a sophisticated country charm in classic whites, wooden hues and the boutique’s signature navy.

Bus Run Extended

State MP Jon Krause recently received the news that an extension has been granted to the Canungra State School bus route that travels along busy Upper Coomera Road and onto Limerick Drive. Questions were raised last year about the school bus route from Canungra State School as the bus currently must reverse into oncoming traffic on Bracken Court, off Limerick Drive, to turn around. Concerned parents contacted Mr Krause about the issue and could not understand why a school bus must turn around at an intersection instead of driving less than one kilometre further along the road to turn around in a cul-de-sac. Previous requests for

the school bus route extension were denied. However, Mr Krause wrote to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads again in January and received the news in early March that following his enquiry and raising of safety concerns, TMR inspected the site and approved the bus route for an extension to the afternoon service. “This is about the safety of our children – I have spoken to residents who have told me that when the bus reverses into Bracken Court to turn around, traffic is held up along Limerick Drive and makes it very difficult to park vehicles safely to pick-up and drop-off students. Mr Krause said that on top of the difficulties parents have parking their

PHOTOS AVAILABLE FOR SALE

vehicles, children then must navigate between the bus and oncoming traffic when they are dropped off and picked up in the afternoon. “It is a dangerous situation for all involved and where an extension to this bus route is the outcome we wanted, it will only be implemented during the afternoon service. I will keep advocating on behalf of this community to ensure that all measures are taken to increase safety for students, parents, and residents using these roads.” Mr Krause said that the changes to the bus route will commence by the end of March 2021 and students will now be dropped off at Coral Court.

International Womens Day was celebrated around the Scenic Rim with a number of lunches and breakfast events held throughout the region. In Canungra, the Chamber of Commerce hosted an International Women’s Day Breakfast with former Canungra resident and internationally published author, Mary Groves, speaking at the event. Mary spoke about her life in the Australian outback and what it was like as a woman living in

In her early 20s she married Joe, a rodeo rider, and they went on to have four children and live on an array of cattle stations and run a variety of businesses in the Top End. She later ran a retreat in the Gold Coast Hinterland before moving to Canungra for several years.

Happiness Is ... Craft!

Courtney Guerin spent 13 years working in a high pressure corporate job in consumer finance. She says she was very ambitious and planned to keep clawing her way up the corporate ladder. Then a number of things made her rethink where she was headed. “I moved to Canungra almost three years ago and about a year later found out my little sister had stage three bowel cancer,” she said. “I started really thinking about my life and my priorities. I started to think about making some changes but was afraid to take the leap.” “Then, COVID-19 happened. For the first time ever, I was home 24 hours a day with my family and got to see firsthand what I had missed. I knew the time had come to make a change.” Courtney took advantage of a restructure at the company she worked for and requested a redundancy. She began planning her new business venture, Happiness Is. “During the early stages of COVID what got

me through the anxiety was crafting.” “I made masks for the doctors office in town, and cards for my teams at work. So I decided to keep going with that and launch my little crafts business.”

Crafternoons Through Happiness Is, Courtney provides weekly card making classes every Thursday at 3pm in Canungra, where people can learn new techniques and spend time with a great group of card-makers. It is a friendly group with Courtney providing instruction and assistance in up to date techniques and other participants sharing their ideas and tips. “I think arts and crafts are so important- especially in times of stress and crisis. It keeps your hands busy, your brain working, gives you a feeling of community, and reminds you there is beauty in the world.” Courtney believes craft should be accessible to everyone, so she ensures the workshops and Craft-

ernoons are low-cost. “I also have had the opportunity to work with a number of disabled clients that need adaptive strategies. This has been amazing for me because I’ve been able to work through new methods and tools that mean everyone can participate.” “I love what I do - I’ve met so many amazing makers and artists in the community and through my classes and each day get to put a little bit of beauty into the world.”

Radio Contest on Beechmont By Nigel Buchanan

Visitors to Beechmont’s Headmaster’s Cafe and Markets over the weekend of 20th and 21st March may have thought a lunar module had landed in the centre’s carpark. In reality it was something far more earthly. Members of the Gold Coast Amateur Radio Society (GCARS) had set up their mobile communications trailer. Bris-

tling with antennas, wires and masts, GCARS was taking part in the annual John Moyle Memorial Field Day contest. Named after an early Australian wireless pioneer, the aim of the contest is to make as many radio contacts as possible over the airwaves, in a 24 hour period using HF, VHF and UHF bands. Contacts are logged and points scored with each contact made. The emphasis is on portable or field operations,

spreading goodwill over the airwaves, and a training platform for emergency communications. GCARS operators took turns in operating their equipment, with contacts made Australia wide, and as far away as Japan, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. At 544 metres above sea level, Beechmont was an excellent location for radio coverage over the weekend. The set-up was quite a spectacle for visitors to the café and mar-

kets. Far from its early beginnings with morse code, amateur radio has evolved with technology to include digital and satellite communications. With their mobile communications trailer, GCARS is equipped to provide communications services to various community events. These have included Scouting Association Jamboree of the Air, cross country cy-

cling and charity events. Contest results weren’t finalised before going to press, but GCARS is expecting to improve on a credible fourth place in last year’s contest. For further information on GCARS, including how GCARS can help with your next community event, visit: www. gcars.com.au or www. facebook.com/goldcoastamateurradiosociety.

Animals Need Shade

The State Government is set to change the way animals are treated in Queensland with review of the 20-year-old Animal Care and Protection Act (ACPA 2001). But a local group says the process is ignoring one of the Sunshine State’s most basic animal welfare needs – adequate shade and shelter. “We regularly see animals standing out day after day in the burning sun in paddocks that don’t have a single tree. This is cruel and unacceptable,” says Morika Elek from Animals Need Shade. “Shelter and heat stress were among the top animal cruelty complaints the RSPCA received last year.” “In 2020, 1,116 emergency calls to the Queensland RSPCA were related to heat stress - either the animal was left in a hot car or it couldn’t reach shade and water.” The RSPCA says Queensland’s heat is deadly. “We have a parliamentary petition from 2018 with 1290 signatures and

Drift In Fashion

A Touch of Autumn Page 16

over 200,000 signatures, if we combine all the petitions currently calling on the government to make shade/shelter mandatory, but this issue is not part of its review.” The State Government says its review of the ACPA will ensure the Act keeps pace with community expectations and modern welfare practices. However, Ms Elek says the process does not go far enough. “At the same time as it’s reviewing the ACPA, the Government’s adopting other regulations that do not set minimum standards for adequate shade or shelter and don’t make them mandatory.” The government is adopting the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines on cattle and sheep. But they are not part of the review process. Ms Elek says the standards, finalised in 2016, do not take climate change into account. She says Australia’s warmest (and driest) year on record was 2019, and

the seven years from 2013 to 2019 all rank in the nine warmest. Australia is now 1.44 degrees hotter than when records began in 1910. “People don’t realise that animals suffer from heat stress at much lower temperatures than we do.” Ms Elek says Animals Need Shade want the Government to: • Insert mandatory requirements in all relevant legislation, regulations and codes for adequate shade/shelter for animals kept outdoors (including at saleyards, holding pens and depots); • Include a clear and unambiguous definition of adequate shade/ shelter; • Introduce penalties for owners and carers who fail to comply; • Adequately police the legislation; • Regularly inspect areas where animals are kept to ensure standards are being met. A new parliamentary petition will be launched soon.

He received a box of chocolate eggs and a golden baking spoon. In the end, as a smile spread across staff, students and

parent’s faces, the school had raised almost $500, thanks to the school council and families who contributed. As this event was such a blast, the student council will work hard towards more fun activities just like this one.

Year 4 Somerset Storyfest By Chloe Delaney and Sophie Gleeson On Thursday 18th March, the Year 4s of Canungra State School went on an excursion to Somerset College to participate in the Storyfest festival. At the Storyfest students get the chance to meet and get information about authors and illustrators. When we arrived, we all sat down for a snack. After we finished, we went over to the Great Hall and watched the illustrator battle. This was where some of Australia’s best illustrators bat-

tled it out for the title ‘Best Illustrator’. Steven Michael King, Remi Lai, Bruce Whatley and a very talented student, Will were the combatants. The host was Andrew Daddo, who has recently partnered with some of these talented people to draw scenes in his books. After an intense battle for the crown, the winner was Remi Lai with her drawing of a dabbing horse at Movie World! It was fantastic! Once the performance was over, everyone sat down by a hedge and had another snack. Then someone shouted enthusiastically: “I see Harley Quinn and JOKER!!!” Everyone was very excited then ... they came over to US! We all received a bit of advice on how to be bad from the evil characters. After lunch, we went over to the College’s oval. We tried to get a group picture in front of the sign, but the grass was too wet. So we went on down to the basketball court for our next presentation with Adrian Beck. He talked us through a few tips on how to get ideas and also talked about his life. In one of his books called ‘Derek Dool Super Cool’, the story of Derek wearing lights in his hair at the disco was based on a true story! When the session with Adrian Beck was over, it was time to leave so we boarded the bus to come back to Canungra. Everyone had such a great time at Storyfest that we are all still chatting about it!

Recovery Journey Through Arts

The community’s road to recovery following the 2019 bushfires was discussed in Providence Hall at the Scenic Rim’s March Arts Dinner Live and Online. Hosted by Bronwyn Davies, the discussion panel included Lisa Groom, who heads the eco-tourism company, ParkTours; Jessica Brown, the driving force behind the Wildfire Creative Recovery Project; author Benjamin Allmon and Scotia Monkivitch, the Manager of Creative Recovery Network. Lisa spoke of her personal journey from having her family, life and business thrown into disarray following the fires to the present day. and coping with the challenges of COVID. Lisa described her experience of the recovery journey as a long, slow

marathon, after months of frenetic activity after the fires. “It’s been a really slow marathon,” she said. “For me, part of this journey is letting everything slow down and sit and let the land slow down and tell us what it wants to do.” “For me ... that journey is much longer and slower and that’s ok.”

Women’s Dreams

On Saturday 6th March, QCWA Beechmountain held an International Women’s Day celebration at Graceleigh Park. QCWA members and community members created a three metre dream catcher on the day, with a vision to creating the world’s largest dreamcatcher (12 metres) in the future, and be marked in the Guinness Book of Records. QCWA President, Amanda Harrison said the Beechmont community has shown its resilience, with the QCWA members teaming together to respond, withstand and recover from challenging situations. “This gathering gave us the opportunity to weave our collective visions together to manifest a positive new dream for our future,” she said.

“Following this year’s theme ‘Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world’; the theme celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.” “ It is honouring women’s efforts in looking after the wellbeing of ourselves, families, and communities. With the turmoil in our world at present it is more challenging than ever. The support of our friends and community is vital to us all. It is important to focus on our health, dreams and visions for our future and weaving this into our lives and environment.” Right: Creating the three metre dreamcatcher. Photo: Supplied. s

Containers for Change in Canungra

Whether you want an easy way for the kids to earn pocket money or you are looking to help a community organisation, the Containers for Change scheme is an easy way to get some extra cash - and it is available right here in Canungra! The Canungra drop off for recyclable containers is at Moriarty Park every Wednesday from 9am to 12 noon (weather permitting). The bag drop off scheme is run by GDR Scrap Metal in Beaudesert and owners Gary and Jill Cole say the system they have is very easy. To make money from your containers follow these simple steps: • Register online at w w w. c o n t a i n e r s forchange.com.au you will be asked for bank details and given

a registration number; • Collect your eligible cans or bottles and put them in a bag or box; • Write your registration number on a piece of paper and put it in your bag of containers; • Drop your bag of containers to Jill at Moriarty Park on a Wednesday morning and wait for the money to be deposited into your account! Jill says most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150 millilitres and three litres - preferably with the lids removed are eligible for a 10 cent refund. “A lot of parents are using the scheme as a way for their children to earn some pocket money,” said Jill.

“People can also use the registration number of a community organisation or sports club and donate the money.” All containers are hand counted by staff at the depot and sorted according to materials for recycling. Jill says horse feed bags are ideal for collecting containers. GDR also operate a Containers for Change bag drop service at their depot located at 35 Enterprise Drive, Beaudesert from Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday from 8am to 12noon. In addition to the Containers for Change service, GDR supply bins for scrap metal, buy scrap metal such as car bodies and can do farm clean ups. it clearer for visitors to find parking when visiting our town. This project was championed by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Council as an initial step towards improving parking in town, and there is still more to do.

Cleaning Up Thank you to those families and Moriarty Park committee members who helped with this year’s Clean Up Australia Day. We all had lots of laughs and were very heartened that the rubbish collected was substantially reduced from the previous year. Nothing dangerous or unpleasant collected and no empty cans or bottles.

Water Updates The Mayor and I recently met with Seqwater and Urban Utilities (UU) officers to discuss ongoing water security concerns within the com-

UU is responsible for delivering drinking, recycled and other water to customers, collecting and treating of sewage and charging for water services for those properties on reticulated water and sewage. We agreed that more extensive community engagement was essential

along with a closer partnership with the Department of Resources - the government department responsible for water allocations to rural producers. More updates will follow as these discussions progress.

The newly renovated shop looks stunning and congratulations Michelle for your continued investment in Canungra. Being an advocate of

COUNCIL WATCH WITH AMANDA HAY

Email: frangipani1601@gmail.com The following are my views, not those of the Editor. Any threats of legal action can be directed to me.

Bouquet Another Show Cause Notice has been withdrawn, this time in relation to a Canungra property. Amazing what a strong response can accomplish.

Development Applications MCU21/017 – 10-26 Finch Road, Canungra – Shopping Centre. Condition number two of the Development Permit requires construction of the shopping centre not commence until there are 1,800 occupied dwellings within the Total Trade Area. Current estimation is only 1,200 dwellings; the request-

ed 24 months extension “will provide sufficient time for additional dwellings to be built in the trade area to meet the threshold, and allow the proposed shopping centre to commence construction”. MCU20/133 – 7-39 Finch Road, Canungra – 188 dwellings. This is now out for public submissions, even though it was only submitted on 22nd December 2020 and at the time of writing there is an outstanding Information Request from the State Govt which states the submitted Traffic Impact Assessment does not

adequately demonstrate that the development does not result in a worsening of operating conditions on the state-controlled road network. In particular, the traffic data utilised for impact assessment appears to have not considered the recently completed residential development north of the site.

It is noted there is only one way in or out of Finch Road and that is via the intersection at Beaudesert-Nerang Road (Pine Street), being a State-controlled road. Further, the submitted impact assessment does not include weekend traffic numbers, based on previous traffic counts through this section of

BeaudesertNerang Rd, Sunday is the busiest day of the week (between 9am - 12pm). Difficult to make an informed submission without all the facts - see submission notification below. Read the fine print in the 191-page document lodged with Council on 24th March 2021.

These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

Council I have been asked by several residents, given the vitriolic nature of anti-council posts on Facebook, why I chose to become a Councillor. Well it’s because I enjoy helping people and making a difference. I know that some of the community issues that I support will not be popular with every resident. I’m not going to take a poll on every issue. The residents of Division 2, after looking at my character and employment history, elected me to be

their voice. I will always look at the long term strategic impact of all my decisions, ie: what will be the benefit and cost over the next 20yrs to the region. I also don’t get to choose who the Mayor or other elected Councillors are, that is done by you, the residents. I must, however, work with them to form a cohesive and functional Council that should be free from personal conflict. The Mayor is the elected head of the Council and the Scenic Rim is too small to have an opposition party like Brisbane and the Gold Coast, so I will not be opposing contentious issues the Mayor supports just to go against him because I don’t like him and to score political points. I will however ensure

that the Mayor works with the Councillors to achieve a common strategic vision, ie: Corporate Plan. The Community Plan is formed from consultation with the community and then this drives the Corporate Plan which all Councillors have equal input into. The Corporate Plan then drives the direction of the Council through a yearly Operational Plan.

Council Meetings Just to dispel some media and Facebook posts, there are no secret council meetings. There

is however a Councillor Workshop that is confidential, this is standard across all levels of Government and they have been happening since before amalgamation. This is where agenda items for future Council ordinary meetings are brought forward and Councillors can query the report to ensure that we have all the information we need to make a decision at an Ordinary meeting. We do not make a decision at the workshop and in fact the Mayor has shut down discussion when

Councillors have gone down that path as this goes against regulations. I have asked the Mayor and CEO to look at some of the briefings that we get in the Workshop that get turned into a media release to see if they can somehow be conducted in a public setting. I encourage you to listen to one of our ordinary meetings and compare it to other Councils.

State Wide Rainfall There’s certainly been a lot of rainfall in March. This has again highlighted the extraordinary dedication of SES and Energex crews, as well as other emergency service personnel. I’d like to thank them for their hard work when things get sticky out there. No doubt there will

be plenty of potholes to be fixed on roads around the region and I will be lobbying Main Roads to fix them in a way that makes them better able to withstand future rain events.

Fighting for Our Fair Share I recently had the opportunity to address

Parliament in the “Address-in-Reply” to the Governor’s speech. Members generally outline their own view for the term and what is important to their electorate. A brief extract is below: “Some of the issues I campaigned on have been continuously raised for a very long time. It is

By Jon Krause STATE MEMBER SCENIC RIM hugely insulting to the people of our region that they are continuously ignored. When something needs fixing – like appropriate town planning and water security or a range of social and family services that simply do not exist or do not meet demand – it should not matter who you voted for; governments have a responsibility to all residents and all voters, not just those in government electorates.” “In fighting for our fair share across the Scenic Rim there are many issues that need to be dealt with and as part of the LNP team I will carry on fighting

for our fair share in the Scenic Rim electorate – better roads, more police, appropriate planning – I’m fighting for families, farmers and small business.” All this rain doesn’t remove the need for better planning and water management around Canungra. I recently met with Government representatives about these challenges and they are now in no doubt about the issues facing Canungra. I understand they will be seeking to take this matter up with Council as well.

MOTORING NEWS

The small SUV market is packed with all makes and models and can be a real challenge to find one that is worth your hardearned cash. The Suzuki brand has a decent heritage with the Vitara and although it may be vastly different from its 1988 release model and the not so inspiring pre 2015 models, the latest variant ticks plenty of boxes. The line-up consists of the GL+, GLX and GLX ALLGRIP, has two different engines and comes in manual or auto. The model we powered around in was the GL+ with the 1.6L petrol running through a six-speed torque converter gearbox. This engine puts out 86kW and 156Nm, which for around town and cruising down the highway is just enough. Although it is classed as a small SUV, the Vitara is actually big inside,

FIBROMYALGIA What is it? Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by widespread pain throughout the body along with fatigue, memory problems, headaches, sleep and mood disorders. Sufferers of fibromyalgia often spend years trying to find a diagnosis that fits their many symptoms and fluctuate between periods of having high energy and ‘crashes’ of fatigue and pain. In severe cases, fibromyalgia can cause significant lifestyle disruptions, including reduced activity, unemployment and depression. The underlying mechanism, which creates the symptoms of fibromyalgia, has been shown to be increased pain amplification by the central nervous system and reduced activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Essentially this means that small pain signals in

the body are processed as large pain signals.

What causes it? Fibromyalgia is a complicated poorly understood condition. Sufferers often find themselves being shuffled between health practitioners looking for answers and longterm relief. While the pain generally feels muscular, usually little muscular damage or injury can be found on physical assessment. The symptoms can also mimic those of an infectious illness, or other chronic diseases. Often a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is reached after other diseases and causes have been ruled out. The cause of fibromyalgia is as yet unknown. Other significant signs of fibromyalgia are a lack of REM sleep in sufferers where restorative sleep is not achieved.

By Alison Ford

What is the treatment? Following a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, a patient’s primary strategy is to understand and manage symptoms. This can involve pacing activities and balancing exercise so as to reduce ‘crashes’ and unhelpful pain cycles that lead to frustration. Identifying activities, employment and a routine that don’t exacerbate symptoms can have a significant impact on quality of life for someone with fibromyalgia. Having psychological support can also be very important to help patients deal with the emotional distress of a complex chronic condition with no outward physical signs. A treatment modality, which has been shown to help reduce symptoms, is Interferential Therapy (electrical stimulation), which produces an en-

Trigger points for fibromyalgia. dorphin response that can reduce pain. Education and understanding of this condition can have the largest impact for sufferers, helping them to manage and maintain some control over their symptoms. Physiotherapists can help where there is in-

flammation associated with muscle and joint damage and with education as they help their patients find a routine and activity levels that help them manage their condition as best as possible. Your therapist will tailor a program to help manage specific symptoms.

PET OF THE MONTH Pepper

Hello humans, my name is Pepper. I’m a domestic short hair boy and only three months old. I will come across as timid at first because it’s been a rough start for me. I was homeless and doing the best I could to survive until one day someone trapped me and took me to the pound. I’ve never been through anything so stressful in my short little life, so I lashed out. I acted tough and scary so no one could ever frighten me again. But the staff here saw

through my bravado and kept patting me and cuddling me anyway. Then they sent me to live with the loveliest lady who showed me that I could relax and enjoy life finally. Now when I’m settled in a home, I love to play and get pats and purrrrr all day. I might take a few days to learn to trust someone new, but I can promise that once I do, I’m worth it. My adoption fee is $250 which includes desexing, microchipping, worming and a health check.

NATURE’S GEMS

Striped Honeyeater (Plectorhyncha lanceolata)

By Melissa Whitby Australia is home to many unique bird families and one of the most well known are the Honeyeaters. This group of birds is well adapted to the nectar-producing flora of the Australian bush. One of the larger species of honeyeater, which inhabits southeast Queensland, is the Striped Honeyeater. This bird is easily recognised by its streaked black head with white breast and grey-brown wings and tail. Young birds are paler in colour than adults. Whenever I encounter Striped Honeyeaters, I usually hear the birds be-

fore I see them. Striped Honeyeaters have a range that extends from central/coastal Queensland into New South Wales and parts of Victoria and South Australia. This bird species can be observed in a number of habitats including drier scrubs and savannah woodlands and have adapted well to utilising man-made environs such as gardens, parks and farmlands. Striped Honeyeaters can be seen readily throughout their range. In my travels throughout Australia, the central Queensland region is where I have seen the most prolific numbers of this bird species. One of the best ways to see a Striped Hone-

yeater is to go to a locality, which has a lot of flowering native plants. Sandy Camp Road wetlands on the eastern side of Brisbane, is a great place to start the search for Striped Honeyeaters. In recent times I have visited this site and heard several Striped Honeyeaters calling. It is also a great spot to go birdwatching for many other birds and some unusual bird species turn up there from time to time that have not been seen anywhere else in south-east Queensland. Overall, the Striped Honeyeater is a good bird for people starting out birdwatching to identify. Even after all these years of birdwatching, I always love to see Striped Honeyeaters!

Dragonflies By Susan Cully A good place to start when becoming acquainted with dragonflies is this male Australian Emerald, Hemicordulia australiae, dragonfly because it is very common. Pictured here posing for a portrait in the Beechmont Pioneer Reserve, Beechmont (yes, it is resting on a Privet heavy with fruit, a noxious weed being incrementally replaced with native trees and shrubs). This species averages a total length of 50mm and a wingspan of 70mm, the male is a dark metallic green with yellow markings on thorax and abdomen, the eyes are green when mature and the female is similar in colouring. This species is found on most waterbodies: streams, rivers, dams, lakes, swampy lowlands, foothills all within our hinterland. They are often seen in these habitats ‘patrolling’ over the water or perched on nearby shrubs and trees as pictured below. They are found from North Queensland all down the eastern states through to South Australia and also in SW West-

ern Australia. They can be sighted year round. What about Damselflies? In the guide Dragonflies and Damselflies of the Gold Coast the following explanation is given: ‘The insect order Odonata is made up of two suborders – damselflies and dragonflies. In general, adult dragonflies are larger and more robust than damselflies, tend to hold their wings flat when at rest, have fore- and hindwings which are different in shape and the eyes are close together, whereas damselflies generally hold their wings closed above their body when at rest, have fore- and hindwings which are similar in shape and size, and the eyes are generally separated.’ However, exceptions apply... In conservation terms these insects, with their beauty, delicacy and abundance, are ambassadors for our waterways. High quality fresh water bodies are under pressure with urbanisation. The presence of key riparian insects, the Dragonflies, Damselflies, Mayflies, and Stoneflies indicate healthy water quality.

Tell Their Stories:

Call For Anzac Nominations Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz is calling for residents, ex-service organisations and historical groups to nominate a local ANZAC in the lead up to ANZAC Day 2021. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic meant the cancellation of thousands of ANZAC day services around Australia. “Sadly, in 2020 we were unable to promote the services and encourage residents to attend a service, to commemorate our fallen and our service personnel. Each year, I send a brochure to the community outlining the various services in the area. “In place of promoting services, we told various stories of local people that paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation. We recounted the lives of Flight Sergeant John Scott of Beechmont and Sergeant George Weier and Private Edward Weir of Gatton. “Through the Queensland State archives and Australian War Memorial, we sourced the

stories, pictures – many largely untold – and developed a ‘stories of our local ANZAC’s’ brochure. “I received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community, they were interested in these stories and asked for us to provide even more. Now we need the community to help to do that, to tell their stories. “If you know of a story, someone local that has served or is serving in some way – where possible and safe to do so – we want to hear their story and share it with the community,” Mr Buchholz said. Mr Buchholz said the region had a rich history with the defence community, particularly with the proximity to various barracks, training centres and air bases. If you wish to nominate or for more information, visit Scott Buchholz on Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/SBuchholzMP or email scott.buchholz. mp@aph.gov.au.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

As I write this article, I am listening to heavy rain falling and I know there are many people hurting again, because of damage from flooding. No matter where we live in Australia we are subjected to a variety of problems. We have had, in recent times, fire, COVID19 and now floods. I do hope you are surviving whatever difficulty or crisis you have in your life. Remember the sun will shine again and things will get better. We can’t help but feel blessed. The St Luke’s recent Car Boot Sale was held on a fine sunny day and drew plenty of people who came and enjoyed what was on offer. Did you hear the great music? We are very grateful to Tom Moore for his singing and leading his group to keep everyone entertained. Did you find a bargain, enjoy a sausage or a scone, or buy a plant or a cake? Perhaps you entered St Luke’s and found a bargain among the huge array of “bric a brac”. All in all, we had a very successful day and as with all our fund raising, the proceeds raised goes towards the maintenance and upkeep of the 85 year old church of St Luke’s in Canungra. Little Lukies is continuing to grow in numbers as they meet for a fun hour each Monday during term time. Remember you are welcome to come along and bring your children, and enjoy some friendship and relax for an hour. We at St Luke’s continue to pray each week for a permanent priest. We are extremely grateful to Fr Ken Spreadborough for his dedication to our parish. He certainly enables us to continue our worship and our strength as a congregation in Canungra. Yes, we are part of a community who cares. We are here for you.

Thanks to the group of wonderful folk who came to our Smiley Reilly Project Trivia Night where we raised $250 for this terrific cause.

Canungra Owls Soccer News

Bingo and Trivia We will be having a bingo night soon so look out for dates on social media and Foodworks notice board. The next Trivia night will be in May too so get ready for that one!

Facilities SRRC have been on site to organise some sensor lighting and other light sensitive lighting for around Moriarty Park to increase safety with many user groups utilising the hall at night now and soccer up and running ... well it will be when we dry out a bit. The Book a Court Tennis system should be all installed within a few weeks and we are well ahead with funding for skate park and SRRC have been most generous with efforts and funding so we are very excited to be getting cracking with that project at last. I have had lots of interest and offers of assis-

Trivia at Moriarty Park will be back in May! Photo: Facebook. tance from locals who are keen to get on board. We are hosting a Lure Coursing (dog) event on 1st August so I would ask all to be respectful of the fact we have a dog event on site and please steer clear with other dogs on that day. Remember also we have Scenic Rim Dog Sports training on Tuesday nights and Saturday nights and to please refrain from having other dogs on the field whilst they are training. We have had some issues with off leash dogs at these times and as essentially we are an on lead facility only we are tolerant of the needs of dogs to have a ‘good run’ but

hope that common sense will prevail. We are still hoping to have another Food Trucks and Classic Cars/ Bikes gig on Easter Sunday but we will have to watch the weather carefully as the fields are precious! Look out for a big Eat Local Week event coming up too ! Many many classes of Pilates, Yoga, Tae Kwon Do, drama and dance etc at Moriarty Park now so have a think about those please. Soon we will have our own notice board, courtesy Bendigo Bank, to advertise WHATS ON! Been a long time coming (my bad) but huge thanks to the Bendigo Bank for helping out as they so of-

ten do. FoodWorks as well as being major soccer sponsors are invaluable to Moriarty Park, sponsoring every event we run there in a huge way. Please take any opportunity you have to personally thank Tony and Anne for without them over many years we would struggle. Our meetings are generally held on the third Monday of the month at 6.45pm if anyone cares to attend. The April meeting will be our AGM first followed by a general

Nothing too much to report as with the inclement weather we have had to postpone our first two Metro Men games! By the time this goes to print we should be back on track so keep an eye out and come down to support our Men’s team on a Wednesday night when at home and have a box of chips or a curry! Youngsters will be on field shortly on Saturday mornings too so there’s a brekky morning out to support our club and our young’uns playing their hearts out ! Be great to have a good season this year ! Go the OWLS !!!! Hopefully we can start with our Sportsperson of the Month program this year so any nominations to Bren please – any sport code welcomed.
