The Changing Face of Canungra Business

Local businesses adapted quickly to the challenge of government restrictions brought in because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With health and government regulations changing daily, on Monday 23rd March the main street changed from a hive of activity as businesses implemented the changes. Cafes and restaurants are not allowed to have seated dining but take away meals are permitted. Space restrictions meant that businesses have had to curtail the number of customers in the shops and mark out places for customers to stand.

The Canungra Times

The Canungra Times has launched an online business directory with a free listing for all businesses and community groups. The directory will show current operational status in line with the COVID-19 requirements of businesses listed. To visit the directory see canungratimes.com/directory.

The Shoe Vault

Nora Jones of The Shoe Vault said she will remain open subject to government regulations, and invited customers to check The Shoe Vault’s social media accounts or call the shop to check on stock.

My Country Escape

My Country Escape customers can still shop in store, however Michelle RoperDennis said all her home wares and fashion items are also available on her web site and via her social media accounts.

Canungra Takeaway

Canungra Takeaway owner Rachel McGlashan said she is now offering ‘kitchen

Canungra FoodWorks

Canungra FoodWorks quickly stepped up to meet customer requirements, implementing a home delivery service for residents in Canungra and on Beechmont.

Canungra Hotel

Although the hotel’s restaurant and public bar has had to close, the bottleshop will remain open and the Hotel has started food deliveries for take away meals from Wednesday to Sunday evenings.

Eat

Local

Scenic Rim Regional Council has cancelled Scenic Rim Eat Local Week, including the Winter Harvest Festival, in the interests of public safety amid the global COVID-19 pandemic. Following advice from the Australian and Queensland Government health authorities restricting mass gatherings and non-essential travel, and in consideration of the many stakeholders and partners, Council made the decision to cancel the event, which attracts up to 40,000 people annually. Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Mayor Greg Christensen said Council approved an economic stimulus package to help minimise the impact on the Scenic Rim’s economy at a Special Meeting on 26th March. “This package included consideration of Eat Local Week and the ability to work with the region’s agri- and food producers to develop a providore solution to open up growth opportunities,” said Greg. “Council also announced its intention to develop a Go Local and Grow Local campaign in conjunction with local Chambers of Commerce across the region. “Scenic Rim Regional Council works collaboratively with a wide range of local

Week

businesses to deliver Eat Local Week each year, and naturally it is a major disappointment that this cancellation of Eat Local Week must happen. “However, it is the right decision to put the health and safety of the Scenic Rim’s visitors, producers, tourism operators and the wider community first. “We would like to thank the Scenic Rim Eat Local Week sponsors, event organisers, food ambassadors, stallholders and the broader Scenic Rim Eat Local Week family for their support and understanding. “Scenic Rim Eat Local Week was due to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2020. In the decade to date, Eat Local Week has gone from strength to strength, helping the Scenic Rim win its current title of ‘Outstanding Region’ at the delicious. Produce Awards and winning a national award at the Australian Economic Development Awards in 2019. “Eat Local Week contributes about $2 million to the Scenic Rim’s economy each year, and has helped the region build a strong local food movement with many loyal followers from near and far. Eat Local Week will be sorely missed by locals and visitors alike in 2020.

ATV For Canungra Rural Firefighters

Canungra Rural Firefighters received a boost in field capability recently when Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham handed over a new All-Terrain Vehicle to access isolated areas, together with a trailer and water pump. The vehicle is valued at over $40,000. For more than a decade Energex has partnered with the State’s Rural Fire Service providing more than $750,000 worth of operational equipment directly to local brigades. Funding for the vehicle also came from a generous group from a Beenleigh Over 50’s village, who had previously donated water for Canungra when the Water Treatment Plant was closed. The Beenleigh group raised $2,125 through raffling a Gerding Clock, made by one of their residents. They visited Canungra on 7th March to present a cheque to the Canungra Rural Fire Brigade and supported the town further by visiting the local shops and cafes. Dr Lynham said he was proud to hand over vital fire fighting and lifesaving equipment, on behalf of Energex, to volunteers

who go out of their way to protect lives and property within the community. “There’s no question this fire season has been one of the worst on record and to ensure the community remained safe the men and women of the local brigades demonstrated exceptional commitment, diligence and bravery,” Dr Lynham said.

“They were out there in not only tough conditions, but sometimes terrifying situations putting their lives on the line for others. “I am honoured to be able to meet these local heroes today and officially hand over additional equipment I hope will assist them continue their tremendous work in the future.”

Autumn Orchid and Foliage Show By Peter Rice, Secretary, BDOFS On the day before the Autumn Orchid and Foliage Show, a dedicated band of Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Society members spent a busy morning setting up the hall, not knowing what the response was going to be as far as the benching of exhibition plants, the availability of sales plants and the eventual attendance of visitors. By judging time, the hall’s exhibition tables and stage were bedecked with 128 orchids and 145 foliage plants, with a few whimsical entries to keep them company. The Society was pleased with this benching as a half a dozen members who usually bench plants were non-attendees due to other commitments. Enthusiasts from other societies, hearing that there could be a limited display, came to the fore and brought along their favourite plants for entry into the competition. On Saturday morning the hall was as you would expect to see it – the stage display tastefully decorated; the craft and cake table “personned” by helpers from Canungra Uniting Church; Weird and Wonderful with their huge selection of sales plants; the sales

section for members of the society and other exhibitors; the kitchen in full flurry as there was a busload of visitors coming soon after opening time – and a number of members awaiting the opening of the door at 8am. By closing at 2pm on Sunday, 474 visitors had passed through the door. Lucky Door Prizes: Bunnings Gift Cards - Julie Poile ($50); Kerrey Vanderwijk ($30); Jennifer Day ($20). International Woman’s Day Breakfast By Becky Bell- McNee. Photos by Katherine O’Brien Photography International Woman’s Day was celebrated by 55 people over a buffet breakfast at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard on Friday 6th March. There were two guest speakers on the morning, Leonie Smith, President of the Beechmountain branch of the QCWA and Donna Tunbridge. Leonie discussed how new the branch was at the time when Beechmont, Binna Burra and surrounding areas were under attack by the bushfires in September 2019. The Beechmountain QCWA, amongst many other community groups, rallied to support the community through connection, resilience and a bottom up approach to working with government and meeting adversity in a close-knit community. She gave a valuable insight into the loss of the ‘safe place’ and community that the 11 families who lost their homes had experienced, with many having to move away from Beechmont while deciding whether to rebuild their homes. Donna shared her inspirational story of loss, betrayal and determination following the forced adoption of her baby in 1973 as a young unwed mother. She went on to speak about her work in the entertainment industry and how she has been strengthened by her experiences. Donna has gone on to use her skills to work in a range of not for profit organisations. Donna was reunited with her daughter many years later and today has a strong relationship with her.

The End of an Era

Over 100 years of history came to an end on Friday 13th March 2020, when the local newspaper servicing the Scenic Rim town of Beaudesert, Beaudesert Times, officially ceased printing operations. The newspaper will continue to operate online and in print, however newspaper staff have been relocated to the Jimboomba Times office. The Beaudesert Times, based in Short Street, Beaudesert once had a thriving printing operation specialising in magazines, flyers, posters and business stationery. All printing contracts have been moved to other printing facilities around the country. A spokesperson for Beaudesert Times said the newspaper’s advertising sales and editorial staff will be retained and the Beaudesert Times newspaper will continue to publish as a weekly newspaper. “Some of the staff will relocate to the Jimboomba Times office and some may work from home,” he said, “This will not affect the operation of the Beaudesert Times newspaper.” It is estimated up to 15 people have lost their jobs – including some older employees who commenced working for the company in their teens and are now in their fifties. The first edition of the Beaudesert Times was published in 1908. Originally the newspaper and publisher was based in William Street, Beaudesert and owned by a private family. An associated publication, the Jimboomba Times, was launched in 1991. The Beaudesert Times moved to the current Short Street location in 2004. The business was sold in 2012 to the former Fairfax Media, and more recently to Australian Community Media. Photo: The Beaudesert Times office in Short Street, Beaudesert.

Long

Delays

The result of the 2020 Local Government elections held throughout Queensland may take some time, with voters having up until 5pm on Tuesday 7th April to return postal votes. The Mayoral race has yet to be decided, with incumbent Mayor Greg Christensen leading at the time of print with 6,900 votes approximately 1,800 ahead of former Mayor John Brent (5,112) and Tom Sharp (5,080). Greg said it has been a very divisive campaign and too early to call at this time. “Whoever is successful will need to unify and chart a compelling story to guide recovery from the current circumstances,” said Greg. “The COVID-19 pandemic is the most confronting challenge our region will ever face,” he said. Mayoral candidate Tom Sharp said he believed the results have been impacted by COVID-19 with a record informal votes alone. “There will be a lot to come out of this election and most importantly how the region will effectively sustain and recover from the triple whammy of drought, fire and COVID-19,” said Tom.

for

Election

“As for the current count it would appear we are a long way off from knowing a result with some 3,500 postal votes yet to be returned to achieve a final count and then preferences to follow.” There are more than 29,000 electors in the Scenic Rim. Of these: • 11,990 were marked off to pre-poll. • More than 4,290 applied for a postal vote. • More than 4,300 were marked off to vote on election day. The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) said the election results across Queensland were slow to appear due to a technical issue with the data feed from polling booths to the ECQ’s results website. The preliminary count was conducted in the local government elections as scheduled following the close of polling. This did not affect the count process itself or the recording of results from over 1,000 polling booths around the state. Many voters, unwilling to attend polling booths in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, were frustrated by postal votes that did not arrive and a telephone voting system that could not cope with the demand. “It is impossible to vote by phone,” said a Canungra resident who did not wish to be

named, “I registered days ago and cannot vote. It just says call back later, too many phone calls.” “I have been trying every day at different times but no luck,” she said. LNP Leader Deb Frecklington thanked Queenslanders for voting under difficult circumstances. ‘The results of these elections will not be known until all the votes are counted, including the many postal votes,” she said. “It is clear many people didn’t want to risk voting because they were anxious about catching coronavirus. I am calling on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to respond to this in two ways. “Firstly, anyone who didn’t vote should not be fined. ‘Secondly, the ECQ should start preparing so the state election in October can be conducted using a full postal vote.” “People shouldn’t be worried about their health when they vote,” she said. At the time of print, Mayoral and Divisional results were not finalised, other than Division 5 where Marshall Chalk gained over fifty per cent of the vote; and Division 6 where incumbent Duncan McInnes ran unopposed.

Focus on Men’s Health

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor Changing Times

I’m almost afraid to ask ‘what else could happen?’ We’ve had drought, fire, drought, flood, plague ... all in the last six months or so. For me, as for many people, COVID-19 next in a long line of disasters. Apart from the health fears, the economic effect is already being felt throughout our town. All I can do is ask that everyone please buy local. If you do buy online, please buy online from a local shop. More than ever we need to support the businesses in our towns to make sure they are here when this is over. Things are changing day by day. Unfortunately while the information in this edition is current at the time of printing, what will happen by tomorrow, or the day after, is anyone’s guess. I’ve done the best I can and I am very grateful to the people who have helped to admin The Canungra Times Facebook page to enable timely information gets out throughout the day while I’m working on the printed paper. The social isolation aspect to this makes it so much harder. Human beings are tribal. We are not meant to live isolated from each other. This is going to be hard on families who are separated, on people who live alone and those (like me) who like having a lot of social interaction. Check on your neighbours, check on your friends. Hug your pets, smile at each other often and connect in ways that are safe - social media, phone, distance. We will get through this together. Stay safe.

The fire pit and barbecue areas both provide great spaces for men to gather and relax.

State Wide By Jon Krause, State Member,Scenic Rim

Coronavirus – COVID-19 The coronavirus crisis affecting the world and our region is unprecedented in living memory. I urge your continuing cooperation with health authorities as the pandemic unfolds. The Scenic Rim has been through fire, droughts and floods. There are confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our electorate and in briefings afforded to me and all Queensland MPs recently Queensland Health indicated the virus will inevitably spread, and we are all urged to follow advice on general hygiene and ‘socialdistancing’ guidelines. This will look different for everyone depending on your own work and living arrangements. We are all in this together and should act in ways that best protect yourself, your family and those most at risk in our communities. The Federal Government has a range of support measures available for Australians affected by COVID-19. Two websites – australia.gov.au and treasury.gov.au – contain health and economic information related to COVID-19. I will continue to lobby the Queensland Government for meaningful relief from state taxes, fees and charges like payroll tax, car and truck rego and electricity and water bills – unfortunately at the time of writing very little has been done at this level of government. “Stop hoarding!” We have been bombarded with constant streams of information about this virus. One key message recently was from our Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, when he asked Australians to stop excessive buying of household supplies. As a nation we produce far more food than we need for ourselves. We are not running out of toilet paper. Please heed this message so that all members of the community have an equal opportunity to purchase the supplies they need to continue with their day-to-day lives, too.

Buy Local 2020 At this time especially, it is a great opportunity to give the little locals in business a go – I know things have been tough for quite a few months now after the fires and then the water supply issues that hit the district. It’s one of the reasons why I facilitated the “Buy Local Christmas 2019” idea which so many locals got behind, and which gave an incentive for all locals to shop local. Please support your local shops and businesses in any way you can, to help keep local jobs and local dollars in town If there is anything I can do to assist you, please call the office on 5515 1100, email scenicrim@parliament.qld.gov.au or SMS me.

Travelling Places – or not!

Hear Us Roar! By Shirlene Pott

By Gina Dignan, Travelling Places I have had a number of locals popping in over the last few weeks to wish us well and I would like to thank them. Lots of people ask if we are quiet, but actually, we are working harder than ever. It is an odd time … and the world has gone crazy. We have been through 911 and the Ansett collapse – both in the same week, SARS, MERS and the GFC this is the next bump in the road. One thing I know for sure is that we will come out the other end, it is only a matter of time and in the long run we will be stronger for the experience. The travel industry is being hard hit with the government warning of Do Not Travel internationally being announced by the government and if you are overseas to return home. This is for an indeterminant time period but generally the understanding is for around four to six months. We have been able to help a lot of people return home in a timely manner. Several have contacted us from overseas and we have been able to rearrange their trip and secure them flights. The last of our travellers are coming home in the next day or two. To the best of my knowledge no insurance company in Australia is covering the cancellation costs due to COVID-19 – there is a general exclusion for epidemics and pandemics. Cover More however is offering travellers cover for their medical expenses in the unlikely event that you contract COVID-19 while travelling. That then leaves people wondering where they stand. Many people travel in April and May to catch the northern hemisphere Spring, so the Do not travel advisory is affecting quite a few people. On the whole the airlines, cruise companies, hoteliers and tour companies have been proactive in rearranging travel itineraries. This is staged, so depending upon your departure date and when you cancel the impact of your decision can affect the offer you receive from the suppliers. Most airlines are allowing people to rebook and use their already purchased fare for future travel – albeit with restrictions. Australian companies Scenic and APT as well as cruise lines and other tour companies like Insight Vacations are offering affected clients future travel credits – some are incentivising travellers to rebook by giving them a better deal if they book again for later this year or next. A few clients have been caught when they have booked an instant purchase non refundable non changeable deal with an hotel or for that matter they have had to cancel at the very last minute because this do not travel warning was suddenly announced. This is a tricky situation and some hotels are offering a future credit or for you to change dates, some are sticking to their rules and a very few are offering a refund. Some of the suppliers are changing their policy constantly – one airline this last week released a policy at 9am and at 12 noon completely changed that policy. So, there is a lot to process and keep abreast of. We are spending our days helping our clients through this maze. We are contacting clients in departure date order and helping them as they make contact with us. Most travellers are wonderful – they understand the evolving nature of this issue and also that we are researching everything and offering advice. We have had clients travelling to special birthdays and weddings that have been postponed … the festivities have mainly been delayed to next year. Wouldn’t you like to delay your big birthday bash for another year?! What is heartening is that virtually all of our clients are rebooking for down the track. They are mostly changing their dates to travel from September 2020 onwards through to next year. They are taking advantage of the deals in the market and the offers companies are making to them. As a local business we are delighted to be able to advise and help our clients through all of this chaos. Meg and Renee at Travelling Places have been fabulous pulling on all their skills and knowledge to help everyone, and I thank them for their thoughtfulness and dedication. It is great to know they are on your side. We have started to have the odd query about new specials … how I love the Australian spirit! We have had quite a few new people to the office visit saying they would rather book through their local travel agency so they know they will be helped in times of uncertainty - thank you. One thing is certain, 2021 will be a huge year for travel! Page 18

Self Isolation - Stories from Behind the Front Door Back

from

Parenting

Isolation

By Kym Crook

By Mandy Potter

Live Fit Gym Owners Steve and Kym Crook said they had to make the most of their situation after returning from overseas. At the time of writing, they hadn’t seen their children for four weeks and all of their three businesses were forced to close due to COVID-19 government regulations, leaving them with no income. Kym started a diary on her personal Facebook page: Day 1 of isolation: Watch a hang glider be rescued from a tree in our backyard. Day 2 of isolation: Shut the doors to our gyms and be left with no income. Twelve days to go. Day 3 of isolation: When you can’t go to the gym get your friends to get equipment from the gym and leave it in your driveway. Practicing my table tennis skills so my son doesn’t beat me. 25th March: Sad to be missing Cooper’s 11th Birthday. We Face Timed him and he got very spoilt with his presents. At least he is with family and hope he has a great day. Day 4 of isolation: Face Timing Cooper for his birthday. Weeding and cleaning gutters (our house is going to be immaculate after this). Practicing my corn hole throws so again Cooper doesn’t beat me. Steve and Kym started posting videos of gym workouts on their personal Facebook pages and the Live Fit Gym pages. In isolation? There’s nothing better than getting outside and exercising. If you don’t have gym equipment, use whatever you can around the house that has a bit of weight in it, eg tinned food, 15 litre water bottles, your baby, your dog (mine’s too heavy), a jerry

I have been isolating for a little over a week now. I arrived home from overseas on 21st March so as I write I’m heading into nine days of not leaving my yard. The tips I have are regarding parenting in isolation which I assume many people will start doing now that school is closed. My tips as a parent as well as a owner/ operator of a Early learning program are: • Get everyone out of PJs and ready for the day at a decent time each day. • During breakfast get your kids to write down two things they want to do that day. They need to have some control over this situation. These can be easy things like a craft or baking or a bike ride. • Do activities / meals outside. Lots of activities can be set up outside - craft, or a picnic rug with LEGO’s or other toys. • Find a way for your kids to not feel socially isolated. Interactive Facebook Lives of classes (dance, karate schools, art classes) writing letters and videos to their friends. Sometimes organising with friends to do the same activity, craft or movie as each other so they can Face Time or share videos about it afterwards - that way making the connection that they are not alone. • Take time for your mental health, call a friend daily. Make sure kids have ‘down time‘ (after lunch is a great time) where they can read or watch a show, online learning etc for an hour so you have that time to yourself too each day. We can do this!

Kym and Steve Crook kept a self-isolation diary on their Facebook page

can - use your imagination. You’ll feel so much better for it. Day 5 of isolation: More garden making today, mulching tomorrow. Weeding and tidying up if our Zen Chinese Garden. Daiquiri making classes and taste testing pool side. Day 6 of isolation: Learnt how to use our woodfire pizza oven and dinner turned out perfect. A food diary of what my personal chef Steve has created so far. Everything made from scratch. Day 7 of isolation: Steve - When you’re mowing the lawns but thinking about missing Saturday golf - nine hole course in the backyard will do. Kym - I thought Steve was mowing the lawns but later found out he made a golfing green (brown) and nine different tee offs. So since we missed playing today at the Canungra Course, we had our own nine hole competition.

Vale - Kevin Chidley 3rd

Kevin Chidley October 1937 - 14th March 2020 By Jan Chidley

Kevin Chidley passed away peacefully on 14th March after a long battle with cancer. He will be missed for so many reasons, but particularly his unfailing love of his family, his sense of humour, quick wit and his musical abilities. Over the 74 years that Kevin played the trumpet he performed in town bands, dance bands, church bands and most importantly, his unofficial family band. In later years he took great joy in playing the keyboard and organ. He was a committed, passionate, decent and caring person. Indeed, he was a great man because he was a good man. Kevin had a strong Christian faith and an incredible knowledge of the bible. A small but beautiful family service was held on 17th March and a celebration of his life may take place in the future to properly recognise local friends for their love and friendship over the years. After almost 60 years of marriage, I will miss Kevin greatly. He is survived by his three loving daughters Michelle, Louise and Fiona; six grandchildren Rhys, Jemma, Adam, Bryce, David and Luke and great grandson Ellis.

She was passionate about education, nature and travel - living each moment to the fullest. She adored children and animals and they loved her back. Most of all, she remembered the special moments in the lives of others, and was always available and present when she was needed. She gave her time, love and

expertise generously and has left a strong legacy in the achievements of many. Joan’s loving family surrounded her during her final days, collating a special treasure trove of memories to the end. She has been loved and admired by many, leaving a lifetime of experiences and memories that all who knew and loved her, hold most dear.

Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au The SUV is the way of life for many in this country and Kia has released a new small model to take on the market. The Kia Seltos comes in four grades, S – Sport – Sport+ – GTLine, with the Sport+ being the one we tested and one that seems to have the most appeal. The Seltos Sport+ is available with the choice of two powertrains. The 2.0-litre front-wheel drive model costs $32,990 driveaway, while the 1.6 turbo all-wheel drive version is $36,490 drive-away. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder ‘Atkinson cycle’ petrol engine produces 110kW of power (at 6200rpm) and 180Nm of torque (at 4500rpm), it employs a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic and is front-wheel drive. The engine itself feels punchy enough to hold its own in city traffic, is quiet and subtle at cruising speeds, and officially rated to use 6.8 litres of petrol per 100km. We got close to this combined number, it was a little higher but still excellent. As with all other models in Kia’s range, the Seltos has had ride and handling tuned to Australian conditions. The result is good

body control over our less than good roads – no jarring or bobbing over bigger hits without being too firm. There’s positive steering feel, and a not too heavy, not too light balance that makes parking easy but freeway driving steady. As speeds rise, there’s no loss of composure or comfort, and wind and tyre noise remain at a low level compared to other makes. The Sport+ model runs on 17-inch alloy wheels, has smart key entry and push-button start, cloth and faux-leather seating, LED interior lighting, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated/folding side mirrors, a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, a cargo cover, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with

sat nav, a second USB port, and single-zone climate control. It still runs halogen front fog-lights, and is fitted with a full-size spare, auto up/down driver’s window, auto window defogging, and ‘solar windows’. It runs a camera-based low-speed auto emergency braking (AEB) with car and pedestrian detection, plus the higher-spec AEB with adaptive cruise control and cyclist detection, which will likely score it a fivestar ANCAP rating. The Seltos Sport+ is a great looking small SUV and one of the more attractive looking cars inside and out. Kia have done themselves a favour with this car as it will take it to the other makes with class.

During World War 1 (1914 - 1918) a fund was set up to build a memorial to honour those who had enlisted from the Shire of Tamborine which included Canungra, Tamborine, Tamborine Mountain, Biddaddaba and Beechmont. Money was raised from donations and entertainment such as sports days and concerts. The trustees of the fun were initially unable to decide what form the memorial should take, or where to erect it, so the money was invested and then reinvested. In 1938, Mrs Smith donated D J Smith Memorial Park in memory of her late husband who had been a stalwart of the district. This gave a place for the memorial and the remaining committee members set about its construction. The names of the men who had enlisted were inscribed on two sides with a 200 candle power light on top. There were 136 names (including 18 who had died in action) from all parts of the Tamborine Shire and included some from elsewhere who had been working in Lahey’s Sawmill. Many of those names are now also included in their home memorials. Sadly, it was only one year later that the men and women of the district were called to serve in World War 2. The Jungle Training Centre was set up in 1942 and Canungra became a military town with trainloads of troops coming through for six weeks training for jungle warfare in New Guinea. After WWII, 150 names (including 20 who did not come home) were added on the third side of the memorial. The Anzac Day Procession in 1938 lined up in the Canungra Railway yard (now the school) - the Light Horse, Canungra Brass Band, returned men, school children and members of the public. There is a very short piece of 8mm movie film by Ken Curtis of that procession. It shows the Canungra Brass Band, the returned men and the school children leaving the railway station. The Light Horse Troop is not shown. They marched up Christie Street, past the ‘cream shed’ (ambulance), in the double gate way, turned left where the school children halted on the eastern side while the band marched on to the western side. Crossing between the photographer and the flag draped memorial is a lady, Mrs Esme Clerke (Lahey) who was an important part of Canungra’s Anzac Days - for many years she hand drew ‘character’ place cards for the returned men at the Anzac Day lunch - each one being easily recognised. The film will be loaded onto the Canungra Times web site www.canungratimes. com. and the Facebook page prior to Anzac Day.

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch News By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

ANZAC Day

By now, you will all be aware that the ANZAC Day Dawn and Mid-Morning Services have been cancelled. What can you do to remember? • At 5.30am on ANZAC Day morning, tune your TV/radios to the ABC. There you will find a special service from the Australian War Memorial. • At the appropriate time, move out to your veranda, balcony or if possible, the front of your driveway. • When you hear the playing of the “Last Post”, stand proud. You might even like to place your right hand over your heart. Remain standing proud until the “Last Post”, the minute’s silence and the playing of “Reveille has finished. Prior to the playing of the “Last Post”, the “Ode of Remembrance” will be delivered: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. At the completion of the minute’s silence and just prior to the paying of “Reveille”, the remainder of the “Ode” Lest we forget. • End of ceremony.

D J Smith Memorial Park

Just prior to dawn on ANZAC morning, two members of the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch will arrive at the park. There they will raise the National Flags of Australia and New Zealand to halfmast. At sunrise one large wreath is to be laid on your behalf, followed by the “Ode of Remembrance”, playing of “Last Post”, observe the one-minute silence and play “Reveille. This will be followed by playing the national anthems of New Zealand and Australia. At mid-morning, another wreath will be laid at the cenotaph. Canungra RSL Sub-Branch members will return just prior to sunset and lower the flags. This Symbolic Service is to be conducted on your behalf, the citizens and veterans of Canungra and the surrounding area. For your safety and that of your family, please do not attend either ceremonies.

When

will we all gather again?

Once this “virus” has been controlled and it is safe to do so, the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch will ask you to gather to honour the fallen with current and ex-serving members, their families and the wider Canungra community. In the meantime, take care of yourself and look after your neighbours and on this ANZAC Day, let your fellow Australians know that you: Remembered Them.

Last month I wrote about my recent visit to Norfolk Island to see endangered Norfolk Island Parakeet. As mentioned, Norfolk Island is also home to a number of forest birds and seabirds. The best place to see the forest birds of Norfolk Island (NI) is within the high forested areas of the Norfolk Island National Park. There are several walking tracks within the National Park where I saw all the endemic birds. Specifically, McLachlan’s Lane, Summit Track and Bridle Track had the high concentrations of native birds. These endemic birds included the NI Gerygone, NI Robin, Slender-billed White-eye, Australian Golden Whistler (race xanthoprocta) and Grey Fantail (race pelzelni). The hybridised population of NI Boobook may be encountered anywhere on the island but the national park is the main stronghold for these birds. For those wanting to encounter seabirds, the best place to go is Captain Black-Winged Petrel Cook Monument. The most notable species include White Terns, Red-tailed Tropic-birds, Masked Booby, Sooty Terns, Black-winged Petrels and great Frigatebirds. This is an incredible place to be able to photograph the seabirds in flight. January is a good time to be on Norfolk Island as many species of the seabirds were nesting. The best place to see this was on Philip Island just south of Norfolk Island. Visitors are only allowed on the island with a guide through the tour company Charter Marine. I would suggest booking ahead as the tours need a set number of people and are weather dependent. A high level of fitness is also recommended. I was lucky enough to get on one of these tours and I was absolutely amazed at how close I saw the different species of seabirds nesting. The best and most affordable way to get to Norfolk Island is to book a holiday package with Oxley Travel, which includes the price of your airfare, accommodation and car hire. Oxley Travel is an Australian-based tour company who I found to be very efficient and prompt when I was dealing with them. Norfolk Island is also place full of history and I fully recommend taking the time to explore the buildings at Kingston. The week that I spent on Norfolk Island was incredible and the experiences I had with the birds really blew me away. It is somewhere that I would definitely not hesitate to go back too! NB: I would like to extend my thoughts to everyone in the Canungra area in this difficult time in response to COVID-19 19.

Bountiful Birdwing Butterflies By Susan Cully The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly was once found in great numbers from the Mary River in Queensland to the Clarence River in Northern NSW. Since the early 1900s the range of the butterfly has become severely restricted and numbers very low in Queensland. Despite fires and drought, Beechmont and Lamington, has seen more Richmond Birdwing Butterflies this year than in the previous decade. The conditions required for this butterfly have come together: Warm, early Spring, long, warm Summer, late rain, heavy flowering season in private gardens as well as in the forest, nectar food sources abundant. Additionally, recent years have seen volunteers and Councils working in private and public areas, planting the host A male Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine Pararistolochia praevenosa (for the (Ornithoptera richmondia), just emerging caterpillars to feed on) and destroying the from chrysalis killer vine (deadly to caterpillars), Dutchman’s Pipe (Aristolochia elegans). There is currently a second generation of butterflies emerging; they are looking for nectar. Many plant species that attract native birds will attract butterflies as well. Shape, colour, perfume, abundance and situation is the guide to plant selection. Butterflies find red and white blossoms attractive. Funnel, trumpet or pompom shapes are popular, accessed by the long proboscis (plural proboscises or proboscides). Other plant preferences for butterflies include perfume, profusion and a certain wildness (thickets of Lantana are a classic example of this) as well as sun, shade and shelter from wind. Mass plantings provide copious nectar and wind breaks. For Australian native gardeners, useful nectar sources are: Bloodwoods, Callistemon, Syzygium spp, Hymenosporum flavum , Eucalyptus spp, Lophostemon confertus, Euodia, Alloxylon pinnatum, Castanospermum austral, Eleaocarpus grandis and Grevilleas. For cottage gardeners some of the following are excellent butterfly-attracting plants: Buddleia, Penta, Duranta, Pompom bush, Hibiscus (old fashioned single blooms), Bouganvillea, Agapanthus, Impatiens (single form), Ixora, Vinca or Periwinkle and daisies (please note many of these are invasive weeds in the bush and do need to be ‘dead-headed’ after flowering, material being composted or consigned to a green bin).

PET CARE PLAN

The COVID-19 response is a rapidly evolving situation and AWLQ is encouraging pet owners to implement plans to ensure their pets are cared for should they be required to self-isolate or hospitalised due to COVID-19. Having a pet care plan in place with help to provide you peace of mind knowing you will always have support available. What can I do to prepare for the unexpected? In the confusion that accompanies a person’s unexpected illness, pets may be overlooked. In some cases, pets are discovered days after, resulting in their safety and welfare being placed at risk. To prevent this from happening to your pet you should take these simple precautions: • Find friends or relatives who agree to be emergency caregivers for your pets. Provide them with keys to your home and feeding instructions, medical needs and the name of your pet’s vet. • Make sure your neighbours, friends and relatives know how many pets you have and the contact details of your pet’s emergency caregivers. • Carry a card in your wallet that advises emergency personnel you have a pet at home and lists the contact details of your pet’s emergency caregivers. • Post “in case of emergency” stickers on your doors specifying how many and what types of pets you have. These notices will alert emergency personnel during an emergency. Display your pets emergency caregivers contact details somewhere highly visible in your home. • Prepare a one-month supply of your pets’ medications, litter and food (if possible) along with up-todate copies of your pets’ vaccination records. Pets require daily care and will need immediate attention should you not be there to care for them – the importance of making these formal arrangements for temporary care of your pet should not be overlooked.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough How quickly things have changed! The 14th March was the day of our Car Boot Sale, and the beginning of a spiral of changes in our world. We were expecting a quieter day because of the COVID-19 Virus. We considered cancelling the event. However, it went ahead, and proved to be as successful as previous years, which is important as funds raised go towards maintaining our beautiful old building, St Luke’s Church. The day proved to be most enjoyable for all, with the live music and singing provided by Tom Moore of Easy Listening Country Music, a bonus that kept everyone’s foot tapping and singing along. Decisions, put in place to ease the spread of this very contagious (COVID-19) illness, have led to the temporary closure of St Luke’s, along with most churches around Australia. What does it mean? While we have been directed not to hold our normal Sunday services, St Luke’s will be open for private prayer on Saturdays between 9am and 10am and on Sundays between 8am and 10am. All are welcome to come in for private prayer. On Sundays Fr Ken will be on hand at St. Luke’s between 8am and 9am. Please do not think we are trying to shut God out of this picture. We are following guidelines given by the church, but at the same time, we believe God is with us at this very difficult and confusing time. While we are being told to keep our distance from each other, we can still care for and love each other. I encourage you to watch out for your neighbours and friends. FORE Your Information - Golf Club News With Kim Sami At the time of writing the Canungra Area Golf Club is still open for golf and is the perfect place to get some fresh air while maintaining social distancing. With the implementation of some necessary changes we should be able to minimise the risk of the COVID-19 virus being transferred whilst continuing to offer a safe place for some recreational activity. with Bren Dalby Well as far as bookings etc are concerned, we, as with everyone else, are a bit ‘day by day’ due to Corona Virus issues. At sending this to press we are continuing with our sports user groups but do not have an April trivia night – mostly due

By Bren Dalby Corona Virus repercussions have knocked us all about to varying degrees and soccer hasn’t missed out on the turmoil. Our season – and this is the situation at sending to press but things can change on a daily basis of course, so please keep an eye out on Facebook etc for any updates – has been suspended until late April, early May, with no training officially starting until 14th April. We hope that everyone will keep themselves fit and energised ready to kick off the season well prepared as its gonna be a short and therefore pretty intensive season with Grand Finals still planned for early September. Games will therefore be played at times we normally wouldn’t play and during school holidays etc. So where possible I trust we can avail ourselves and work together to car pool, run canteen, ref and try to have as close to full teams turning out, although of course we understand holiday commitments and similar. I saw some girls at social tennis on Monday night at 5.30pm so there’s an idea ? On the plus side our new schmick canteen should be ready for season start! We may even have a bubbler, although that could be a bit of a stretch to be fair. Facilities committee at SRRC asked us to remove the bubbler we had prior to approving canteen work to start; unsure why to be honest but that’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes, so we are working to have a more suitable bubbler installed as soon as we can. Please endeavour to bring water bottles and we will have water for sale or tap water available to fill bottles. There won’t however, be cups available from the canteen as this is single use environmental waste so please pack those bottles or $2 for a bottle of water and refill that. Thanks again to all who have pitched in and mowed ... Tom Mahony in particular has been wonderful. Hopefully we will have a mower at Moriarty Park soon too. Please come along and support our teams at home when games resume and check out the delicacies we have in store from the canteen; you won’t be disappointed!

to Easter and Anzac Day weekends to be fair, but fearing more stringent gathering numbers are imminent. Our next trivia night is optimistically planned for Saturday 16th May at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. $5 per person, max six at a table. Nominations are still sought for Sportsperson(s) of the month; please contact Bren with a story and a pic on bren.dalby@bigpond.com. February Sportsperson will feature in next months Times as they are currently out of the country! Big clue there! Moriarty Park are holding their AGM on Monday 20th April ... unlikely unfortunately that we will exceed whatever the ‘recommended gathering numbers’ dictate at that time but, hey, hope springs eternal! All welcome, and would be great to see some of the ‘newly moved here’ people becoming more involved in this community and the organisations who make ‘us’ what we are. No obligation to take on a position or even become involved but come along and see what we are all about and what we are trying to achieve! Having said this is when we will hold the AGM we are all aware of the rapidly changing circumstances we are living with so if there is any change to this we will put notice on our website and in Foodworks notice board….also on our own noticeboard should we be successful with our Bendigo Bank pitch! Keep safe and we will hopefully return to some semblance of normality sooner rather than later. We should be aware of the needs of others around us and help where we can to assist them; this is what we are about here and why we love it.

SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE CANUNGRA TIMES

50% OFF! Any ads for Community Groups and Job Ads

We want to reward community groups that work hard to promote themselves, their events and their programs. It also applies to job ads, because we know how important jobs are in this region.

Ads from just $22

We know small business is tough, and advertising can sometimes be expensive. We keep our prices affordable because we would rather see you get a return on your investment over the long term than sell you an ad one time.

Local Biz Priority We do our best not to promote out of town businesses that are competing with local businesses.

We would rather advertise a local business wherever possible to ensure we deliver on our promise of helping the local economy.

We’re just like you! We are a local small business just like you.

We live here, we are raising a family and we are committed to the region. Our advertisers are our friends and neighbours and we have a vested interest in helping you succeed.

That’s how we support you. You can support us by taking an ad in our paper so we can continue to do what we have been doing - building a community focussed paper.
