The Canungra Times – November 2020

MillPark Legacy Building Completed

In February 2018, Jean Comley began plans to build a medical centre in Canungra, and almost three years later the MillPark Legacy Building has become a reality. Jean owned the commercially zoned vacant land for over 17 years, but news that Dr David Christensen needed to relocate his practice was a catalyst for commencing the build. Jean moved to Canungra in 2000, when she bought the Canungra Motel in partnership with her eldest son, Stu, who was managing a cafe in the town at the time. The pair have been entrepreneurial over the years they have been in Canungra, always keeping in mind the needs of the community. In 2005, Stu started The Canungra Times and in 2010, Jean commenced production of Canungra Calendar. With the growth of the town and need for a purpose built medical centre with room for allied health services, Jean saw an opportunity to utilise her land and provide a

service to the community. “While living in Canungra I could see a very fast growing town,” said Jean. “There are amazing people here and it is a great community to live in. I knew it was the right thing to do and the people of Canungra will benefit from this new facility.” When Jean held preliminary talks with Scenic Rim Regional Council about the build, she was told that planning approval would be fast tracked due to the type of facility. “It took six months for council to approve, what would slow or normal be like?” she said. “We actually started to build in January 2020 and finished in October 2020 as everything had to go through lengthy plans, certifiers, engineers and approvals from every possible person that could be involved, most without invitation from me, all of which took forever with huge costs.” Once again, Jean went into the project in partnership with her eldest son, Stu, who is a major investor in the project.

The MillPark Legacy Building team: Front - Lisa Howell, Jean Comley, Stuart Spalding; Back - Drago, Stu Comley, Jodie Devlin, Ian Cameron, Peter Howell, Natasha Miller. “I was 75 when I started this project and I wanted it to be a legacy for my family and for this town,” she said. The name of the buildng, ‘MillPark’ is a combination of Jean’s maiden name, Miller, and her mother’s maiden name Parker. “It was all approved by my sons Stu and Leon and my sister Babs who lives in England but is a regular visitor to Canungra. It means a lot to

me to name the building in honour of my parents.” She is in the process of having the Miller and Parker family crests added to the signage on the building. Determined to keep the project local as much as possible, Jean was grateful for the assistance of the local Bendigo Bank with finance; and local artist Colleen Lavendar for creating the MillPark Legacy Building sign which hangs at the front

of the building. Jean also thanked her builder Peter Howell for his patience and dedication to the project. “Peter has been amazing and his team are absolute professionals. When he wasn’t waiting weeks for inspections and certifications he stormed ahead and has built a great medical centre.” Not one to take things easy, Jean is already talking about her next project!

After successfully taking out the Best Residential Swimming Pool Award in the Gold Coast 2020 Housing and Construction Awards, JB Pool Construction has won the State award in its category. The 17-metre curved infinity-edge pool, located in Sanctuary Cove was described by judges as an amazing, complicated project with a brilliant result. “One skilled pool builder, brilliant job,” the judges stated. The pool is connected to a ‘tributary system’ of ponds, fountains and waterfalls that reach through the centre of the dwelling to the gatehouse, where they culminate as the focal point of the home’s

entry. With more than 110,000 litres of pool and pond water volume, 170 linear metres of perimeter, 140 square metres of water surface area, and 300 square metres of tiled interiors, this stateof-the-art pool leaves nothing to chance. Pool builder Jamie Bramich said with the aim of being as efficient and low maintenance as it is show stopping, the design includes one of the largest and most intricate residential in-floor cleaning systems in Australia. “Behind the scenes, pool and pond smart operations are controlled across two plantrooms, incorporating four filters, six variable speed pumps, three sanitation systems

and a water management system,” said Jamie. The design is also aesthetically stunning with more than 20 integrated steppers, eight planter boxes, eight water feature pots and five stone waterfalls handmade piece by piece from New Zealand schist rock. There are four glass walls and two timber lattice and glass bridges. Below the water, six pool lights and 30 pond lights combine to showcase the pool, ponds and home in glittering opulence after dark. “The result is a defining pool that showcases the immense capabilities of our industry and which, importantly, brings immense joy to its owners,” said Jamie.

New Home for Canungra Doctors

Canungra Valley Medical are excited to be shifting into a purpose-built centre. Dr David Christensen and his team are relocating the practice to the building next door, after over 10 years of practicing at 49 Christie Street, Canungra. Dr Christensen said he is excited to be moving to the new facility, which will secure the future of medical services for their patients, as well as extending the scope of services they can provide to the Scenic Rim. They wish to thank Jean Comley and her son Stuart Comley for their dedication to the build and ensuring ongoing medical services to the region continue. “I’m looking forward to being able to bring pathology services back to Canungra,” said Dr Christensen. “Providing access to Pathology has especially been a priority for us as many of our patients find it difficult to travel.” In addition, Canungra Valley Medical will host allied health services including: Physiotherapy, Psychologist, Diabetic Ed-

ucator, Dietician, Podiatrist and Exercise Physiologist. The doctors from Canungra Valley Medical (Dr Dave, Dr Garth, Dr Syed, Dr Lavanya and Dr Shamila) will all be available for appointments in the new premises and opening hours will remain the same with a possibility of extended hours. Canungra Valley Medical has built a dedicated team of general practitioners, nurses and administration staff who have strong links with the Canungra community. “The beauty of the new building is there will be a lot more space enabling an extra 2 consulting rooms and an extra treatment room as well as a separate dedicated area for Pathology along with an Allied Health room. There will also be dedicated parking for patients”, said Dr Christensen. While the practice is able to care for all patients, Dr Dave has a strong interest in mental health and preventative medicine. The team are also focused in chronic disease management, skin cancer clinic, and women’s health.

Fourth Term for Krause

Canungra Area Golf Club’s pitch stole the show.

LNP Candidate Jon Krause has been returned for a fourth term as the State Member for Scenic Rim. Mr Krause was first elected to the seat in 2012, under the former name Beaudesert until 2017 when it became known as Scenic Rim. Mr Krause said he is humbled to be reelected and will continue to fight for the Scenic Rim to ensure residents are well represented on State issues.

Pitch Night Delivers Laughs The Canungra and District Community Bank’s Pitch Night had echoes of a Theatre Sports evening. Eight community organisations performed their ‘pitches’ for members of the Bank’s board, vying for funding. Canungra Area Golf Club stole the show, with a hilarious skit involving a ‘fairy golfmother’ and cardboard golf carts, successfully earning the Club $2,000.

Page 6

Not to be outdone, John King’s performance as ‘Wazza’ in the St Luke’s Anglican Church pitch earned the Church more than the $300 they had requested - the Bank board allocated $500 for the Church’s Carols by Candlelight in December. All of the organisations that participated in the evening were allocated funding, with a total of $9,250 going to local community organi-

sations. Chairperson, Janine Rockliff, said she was happy to see profits from the Bank returning to the community. “This is the second Community Pitch Night we have held,” said Janine, “It was great to see everyone getting into the spirit of the evening, and even better to see the community being rewarded for supporting their local bank.”

Jon Krause will serve a fourth term.

Road Barriers Killing Koalas

Koalas are the latest victims of road barriers installed by the Department of Traffic and Main Roads (TMR) on Beaudesert-Nerang Road. The barriers were installed between Canungra and Nerang in response to crashes over five years from July 2012 to June 2017. A spokesperson from TMR said there were 68 reported incidents between Wonglepong Road and Nerang–Murwillumbah Road in this period. These included four fatalities, 41 crashes requiring hospitalisation, 22 requiring medical assistance and one minor incident. The road barriers consist of guard rails which effectively block all access through the railing, designed to stop motorcyclists from going under the railing in the event of a crash.

Calista Cameron of Canungra said she is devastated by the number of dead koalas she has seen on the road since the barriers have been installed. Calista said she found two koalas dead on the road in the space of a week during October. “It is not just those two koalas,” said Calista, “One was a female and the other a male. They could have been a future breeding pair.” “I’ve lived here for seven years and only seen one dead in 2015. With those guard rails, there is nowhere for them to get through.” Calista expressed concern for her own safety when checking animals on that stretch of road. Motorcyclist and Canungra resident, Ken Hill was devastated when he was travelling home from work just after 11pm and had the terrible experi-

ence of hitting a Scrub Wallaby with his vehicle. “He was inside the new guard rail area and appeared trapped,” said Ken. “I felt bad that I had killed this animal and my initial reaction was to stop and check if it had a joey in its pouch and move the carcass off the road.” “You can not pull off the road anywhere on this section. These full height guardrails in a full forested area on straight sections being a barrier for animals getting to water at the river.” “I feel many more animals of all types will die or be maimed because of this guard rail decision by Main Roads!” he said. Wildlife carer and motorcyclist, Bren Dalby said once animals were on the road, barriers fenced them in, comparing it to being on a luge.

Ken Hill says the new road barriers are causing carnage amongst wildlife.

HUMANS CANUNGRA of

Pam Moriarty By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

Canungra has seen some big changes over Pamela Moriarty’s lifetime. Here she recalls the days of riding her horse five miles to school from a very young age, the army presence in the town during World War Two and a very unusual way of moving house.

You’ve been in Canungra all your life? Yes. I went to the school at Witheren when I was six and then we moved from Flying Fox to Lamington National Park Road when I was about seven or eight and I started school at Finch Road. How did you get to school? I used to ride my horse (laughs). Well, ever since I started school I rode my horse, and because I was short, two girls used to catch my horse, Stella, at the end of the day and saddle her for me so I could ride her home - Margaret and Clare Peterson. What did you do with your horse when you were at school? There was a horse paddock at the back of the school and we used to put the saddles un-

der the school. How far was it? It was five miles from where we lived in Flying Fox to the school at Witheren. I used to ride all that way by myself. There weren’t any little bridges over the crossings, I used to go through the creek. One year there was a flood and my Uncle Bert and his family were staying with Mum and Dad and he rode down to Jerome’s crossing to see me across. Was it safe to go across? Well...I guess it was. You’re still here! Yes, well that was an adventure. You lived here through the second world war, was it very different? All out where the army is now was all tents. When I was really young, down where FoodWorks is, was

Smiths’ Store which was a big store with everything in it. There was the old big hall that burned down. They built a temporary hall where the car park is, until they built the new one. What happened to the temporary hall? Arthur Finch bought it as a shed and it is on a property now (where Bowtop Wagons are located). We used to have some good dances in that hall. Every year we had a fancy dress ball at school and we used to walk from the school (at Finch Road) to the hall and practise dancing. Either Charlie Taylor or Mrs Paige would play. We used to love it, it was great fun. Did everyone from the town come? Pretty much, everyone was pretty social. You moved from Flying

Pam Moriarty Fox, closer to town... We had a house on our top dairy farm out at Flying Fox and the land started to slip so it was a matter of removing the house or seeing it slip into the creek. So Dad took the house down board by board, numbered them all and eventually built the house again on Lamington National Park Road. Did he have help? I think he did most of it himself. He was very pleased with himself because he made an arch out of cedar which

was something new in the house. When he was doing that we lived in the shed! It was great fun. Your children all went to Canungra State School? Yes, I’ll never forget that the Principal said the P&C could plant rose bushes along the bitumen driveway at the front of the school because that was one thing the children couldn’t pull out. Down the track they had to be removed because they were deemed unsafe for the children!

Swimming Season Starts Canungra Swim Club is off to a great start this season with an enthusiastic group of parents and young swimmers keen to hit the water. Club President, Amanda Thorogood said everyone is keen to get back into sport after the COVID restrictions affected winter sports. “We are hoping for a pretty normal season,” said Amanda, “But that will be affected by government regulations over the next few months.” Swim Club nights are very social and all swimmers participate in races in their age groups with younger children able to race with kickboards and assistance if needed. Amanda says new members are welcome to join in any time. Swim Club nights are every Thursday starting at 5.30pm for children from 5 to 17 years. Swim Club is held at the Canungra Swimming Pool, Monarch Drive, Canungra. For more information call Club President, Amanda Thorogood on 0490 114 832.

Flamingo Bingo Raises $6,000

They say that strange things can happen in a country town when drag queens arrive. Flamingo Bingo at the Canungra Hotel brought 100 locals together to laugh and try to make sense of the rules of Flamingo Bingo. Performers ‘The

Mixed Nuts’ sang, swore and made everyone laugh until they cried in an over 18s show the likes of which has not been seen before in Canungra. Canungra Hotel Manager, Simon Walsh said $6,000 from the night was donated to Turning Canungra Pink.

Wonglepong Working Bee The Friends of Wonglepong held a working bee at Hugh Mahony Reserve on Saturday 10th October. On a warm day, the group planted 160 tubestock to help regenerate the area next to the lake. In conjunction with Tamborine Mountain Landcare, the group has been busy creating an

area where residents and visitors can walk and picnic around the lake. “We are trying to make it more usable for all residents,” said organiser Sandra Middis, “But we also want to ensure we keep the environment as natural as we can.” “We are planting a variety of natives to replace some of the weeds that had become established

around the lake.” Sandra said the working bees are very social and more members are welcome to join the group at the next working bee on 14th November. For enquiries about Friends of Wonglepong, contact Sandra on 0439 719 150. Photo: Sienna, Lauren and Danny Gregory at the working bee.

Letters to the Editor formed, but without the land acquisition bank of its predecessor. Clearly, the present State Government is now well placed to make amends for the disadvantage imposed on our community by the actions of Mr. Beattie. Does our Council have the ticker to lobby the State Government to implement the solution to this problem which is staring us all in the face? Pat Fitzgerald Lower Beechmont

Thank You I would love to thank a couple of lovely businesses in the community who helped out our small non for profit after school care program on Beechmont: Cedar Creek Winery, St Bernards Hotel, Binna Burra and Wilderflower and Wanderberries for their raffle donations. Also Bunnings Nerang for a gift card to get some garden supplies. Samantha Ford

Guardrails The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is implementing a policy to include a motorcycle rub

rail (lower panel on the guardrail) on all new guardrails in the state. The primary purpose of the rub rail is to protect motorbike riders from sliding under the guardrail in case of run-off road crashes. These new guardrails are proving fatal for multiple species of wildlife which find themselves trapped on a road by a solid wall of guardrail. With no escape they panic and consequently are killed or injured by colliding with traffic. This situation also makes roads more dangerous for motorists as drivers take evasive action to avoid hitting confused and panicking wildlife, potential vehicle impact in colliding with wildlife and risk to those stopping to assist injured wildlife or distressed motorists. Long stretches of new guardrails installed on Beaudesert Nerang Road have already caused such a major increase in wildlife casualties that it has been described as wildlife annihilation and consequently increased the risk of wildlife collision for road users.

The Canungra Times – November 2020

Also of concern is that long stretches of these guardrails are being installed close to the road with few gaps so motorists are unable to safely pull off the road in case of breakdown or emergency. Guardrails are designed as roadside safety treatments but they are also immoveable roadside obstacles which create a hazard as evidenced by fatalities and injuries identified as caused or contributed by guard-

rail collision. Guardrails can do more harm than good in some situations so a rational approach is that they should only be installed where roadside conditions and surroundings pose a greater threat than the guardrails themselves. It would appear that by installing the new guardrails at all locations rather than restricted to demonstrated motorbike crash hotspots TMR’s risk assessment has omitted or ignored the increased hazard and

public risk created by entrapped wildlife. If you are concerned about the impact of this guardrail policy on wildlife, public risk and your own personal safety please provide feedback to southcoast@tmr.qld. gov.au with a copy to bren.dalby@bigpond. com so that we are able to monitor TMR’s action in response to public feedback on this issue. Letters to the Editor An Invitation To Community To Beechmont and Canungra Community, As well as being a teacher, I run a grassroots community organisation called The Little Pocket, which provides platforms to connect with people and place. It has been a challenging year with fires, COVID, raising three children, and the anxiety it has brought with it. Last November, after the fires, we wanted to come together to talk, cry, laugh, and make art together, so The Little Pocket hosted a Regeneration day, which was an important beginning of our healing. From that day, a seed was planted for a Regeneration - Creative Empowerment Project. With the support of Todd Brown, Sally

MacKinnon and Samantha Campbell, we set about nurturing this idea and writing grants to help it grow. We are grateful to have received funding to deliver the project over the next two years. As well as exciting art projects that will evolve over time, we hope to bring artists and community together to paint murals, deliver creative workshops, create a collection of artwork, poems and stories for exhibition and publication. We hope to provide a safe and supportive platform for community to share stories, connect and create art together … and in the process help with the healing. We understand emotions are still raw in our community and everyone is at different stages in their recovery.

Vanessa Paull, Benjamin Werner, Todd Brown, Eve De Silva, Bronwyn Davies, Samantha Campbell, Adi Brown, Lisa-Shalimar Carney, Janine Healy, Cr Virginia West, Jessica Brown, Helena Townsend. To help guide our process and navigate this sensitive space, we engaged mental health professionals and the Creative Recovery Network to deliver training for artists and arts workers working with communities affected by disasters. We would love to hear from creatives, artists, arts therapists, makers, dreamers, doers, shak-

ers, thinkers and more. We want to hear from all people who feel they may like to contribute in any capacity to connect with Regeneration. Our website should be ready soon, we are creating social media pages and we would like to invite you to a Morning Tea on the 28th November at 9.30am at The Old School, Beechmont,

where you can share your ideas and learn about the project. If you would like to know more, please email thelittlepocketcommunity@gmail.com or contact me on 0450 182 023. Or pop down for a cuppa and a chat - our door is always open. I’d love to meet you. Jessica Brown

Binna Burra Farewells Kitchen in Beechmont

Binna Burra Lodge has announced, that at the request of the Beechmont Area Progress Association (BAPA), it has returned Binna Burra Kitchen (formerly Headmaster’s Café), to the management of BAPA. From the start of 2020, Binna Burra Kitchen was established to offer employment to Binna Burra staff displaced by a devastating bushfire that destroyed the Binna Burra Lodge, Dining Room and 42 of the heritage listed cabins in September 2019. For the past 10 months, Binna Burra Kitchen offered a licensed-café menu serving local residents and day-trippers

from around South East Qld, only interrupted by a closure for COVID-19 compliance and later during the construction of the new car park. During Binna Burra’s tenure, the profile of the Old School site at Beechmont was significantly enhanced with many sightseers and patrons coming to the hinterland region for the first time. As part of Binna Burra’s determination to maintain and rebuild ecotourism at the gateway to Lamington National Park in Beechmont, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads provided a new sealed car park for the

The Community Garden, located at the Old School Site is being rejuvenated after a hiatus due to a lack of volunteers. Garden Coordinator, Karen White, said the grant will be used to purchase soil improvers, gardening tools and equipment

to make working in the Garden easier for volunteers. “We have some new members and we are looking at growing more produce to use in the Headmaster’s Cafe and selling the excess produce at Beechmont Markets,” said Karen. For more information about the Beechmont Community Garden call Karen on 0419 781 877.

Social Cricket On Beechmont

The Beechmont Cricket Club is perfect for those who enjoy playing cricket but don’t have the time to commit to a weekly grade competition. Beechmont Cricket Club President, Chris Edmond said the current membership is made up of all walks of life but mostly of those who juggle weekend work and family commitments. “The Club has an inter-club competition with three games per season and also a Beechmont 11 side who play against other social teams in the region,” said Chris. “We are also in the process of organising a social winter competition after the summer season finishes.” The Club house at Graceleigh Park is exceptionally well equipped with facilities including a wheelchair accessible toilet with a mothers room, as well a unisex toilet, change room and

Chris says the Beechmont Cricket Club is ideal for cricket lovers of all ages and genders to come along and play social cricket games this

summer. “We have all the gear and no idea but we love being out on the oval and giving it a crack,” he said. “So don’t worry if you can’t spin a ball or smash a six. Just bring yourself along and meet new people.” Beechmont Cricket Club is hosting an Up-

Active Tennis Programs

The Beechmont Tennis Club runs a number of active programs for children and adults from Beechmont, Lower Beechmont and surrounding district. Thanks to a number of grants, the Club has been able to run these programs at an affordable cost. The Club was fortunate enough to receive both Active Clubs and a COVID Safe Active Clubs Kickstart grants. These funds enabled the Club to organise proactive coaching squads. In early September, there was a Junior Tennis tournament held at Beechmont, this will be followed by a Beechmont–Tamborine Mtn. junior tennis competition on 15th November. Besides the Junior Tennis activities, the seniors meet every Friday for a social hit. Thanks to Scenic Rim Regional Council Community and Sports and Recreation grants, the Clubhouse is now a fully functional facility with air conditioning and a TV-Video training suitable for seminars and other community meetings. Wildlife Issues

Medical Centre Opens In Canungra Congratulations to well known Canungra business woman Jean Comley who along with her Team have built the new MillPark Legacy Building on Pine Street. As medical and dental services have grown in our town so has the need for new premises. The centre is on schedule to open in mid November and you will be impressed with the fresh modern interior of this building. Thank you Jean for your valuable and continued support of our town.

Thank you to all residents who have been assisting with this matter, especially Bren, Tara and Gary. As we all know the installation of new guardrails along a section of Beaudesert Nerang Road is part of new DTMR standards for motorcyclist safety, however it has proved fatal for native wildlife unable to get off the road. I can assure you that DTMR, State and Council personnel are actively engaged in a solution to this ongoing matter.

Digital And E-Commerce Grants Council recently approved Package 2 of the COVID 19 Economic Stimulus Package which is a grants program to

assist local businesses to access digital technologies and services and enable them to maximise online opportunities. This program continues to support the region’s economy and minimise the financial impacts of the pandemic on our small business owners. Application details are available on http://www. scenicrim.qld.gov.au/.../ didital-and-e... This program works alongside the Facade Improvement Scheme which formed Package 1 of the Economic Stimulus Package.

Breast Screen Queensland In Beaudesert October as we in Canungra know is Breast Cancer month and the mobile BreastScreen

Operating from three convenient locations in 2020: • Canungra - Saturdays from 9am, outside Live Fit Gym. • North Tamborine - Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am - 4pm at the IGA carpark. • Tamborine Village - Fridays from 1pm until dusk at the roundabout.

Ph: Jonathan 0423 082 988

Queensland unit is currently based at Beaudesert Hospital until 10th December. I urge all women aged between 50 and 74 to make an appointment and have a free breast cancer check. Appointments can be made by calling 132050 or visiting www. breastscreen.qld.gov.au. There are a number of local women who in recent years have had breast cancer picked up in the early stages as a result of this wonderful service.

Get Ready Queensland Officially this week has passed, but it is the time for households to prepare an emergency plan, ensure they have emergency supplies and check insurance details. I suggest residents download the Scenic Rim Disaster Dashboard as this keeps you updated on an array of disaster related matters including the weather radar, road closures, power outages just to name a few. Visit disasterdashboard.scenicrim.qld.gov.au

CONTACT ME I am always available to talk with residents on telephone 5540 5403 or 0407 630 052 or email virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. I am still unable to meet directly residents at Canungra Library but happy to arrange a meeting in D J Smith Park if required.

A NOTICE FROM URBAN UTILITIES Canungra entered into level one drought response in early June when flow in Canungra Creek dropped below seven megalitres per day. With little to no recent rainfall, flows in Canungra Creek have continued to drop and are now sitting below 4 megalitres per day. Although higher than average rainfall is forecast for summer, the rain might not fall soon enough, and we expect flows in Canungra Creek to continue to drop. Levels in Canungra Creek can change very quickly. Stay up to date with the latest information regarding water use in Canungra, tanker filling stations, and medium level restrictions via our website at urbanutilities.com.au/canungra Please remember medium-level water restrictions remain in place for Canungra and most of the Scenic Rim. Thank you for your ongoing water saving efforts.

TEXT NECK What is Text Neck? Text neck is a modern-age term coined by a US chiropractor to describe repeated stress injury and pain in the neck resulting from excessive watching or texting on hand held devices over a sustained period of time. It is also known as ‘Turtle Neck Posture’ or ‘Anterior Head Syndrome’. This condition is a growing lifestyle / health condition with the steady growth in mobile phone use all over the world. It is a cause for increasing concern especially with children and teenagers, given their greater propensity to mobile phone usage and the fact that their young spines are pliable and can be permanently disfigured. Apart from neck pain,

it can also cause shoulder pain, upper back pain, headaches and postural deformities in the upper back.

Consider the Physics! Flexing the head forward to use a smartphone directly affects the spine. Tilting the head forward to 15 degrees places about 12 kilograms of force on the neck. This increases to 22 kilograms at 45 degrees and 27 kilograms at 60 degrees. 60 degrees is the most commonly acquired posture for children as they slump in a chair to look forward onto the screen! 27 kilograms is roughly the weight of four adultsized bowling balls and this is seriously affecting the lower joints in a child’s growing neck! Symptoms of Text Neck include: • Stiff neck

By Alison Ford

• Pain in the neck • Radiating pain into the shoulders and arms • Muscular weakness in the shoulder muscles • Headaches Longer term issues might include: • Permanent Postural Changes • Early onset arthritis • Spinal degeneration • Disc compression • Chronic postural muscle weakness • Loss of lung capacity.

Management The following recommendations should be kept in mind for a child or teenager using a smartphone or other hand held device: 1. Avoid excessive usage and take frequent breaks. 2. Avoid prolonged static postures. 3. Try not to slouch. 4. Position the device so that it reduces stresses

Text neck describes repeated stress in the neck from excessive texting on hand held devices. both on the head, neck and the arms. 5. Avoid high repetitions of movements such as prolonged typing or swiping. 6. Avoid holding large or heavy devices in one hand for a long time. Physiotherapy management is found to be

very effective in treating the stress injury resulting from Text Neck in both the acute and chronic cases. Please consult your physiotherapist for advice if you suspect your child / teenager might be suffering from this syndrome.

Roads It’s great to see Main Roads working on the problem areas on the Beaudesert Beenleigh Road just outside Beaudesert. Firstly, the work that has just been started on the corner where there have been two recent truck rollovers has been a long time coming. This will involve the levelling of the road (removing a sag) and improving the cross fall so that when vehicles are heading towards Tamborine the load is not shifted to the outside causing that rollover. The road will be reduced to one lane for a

period of time with traffic lights controlling the flow. The next section to be upgraded will be from Brooklands back to near the above roadworks. This is much needed works as that section of Beaudesert Nerang Road is in such a poor state. I know that you will all show some patience to the traffic controllers and works crews during this upgrade. Big thank you to the Department of Main Roads for the recent works carried out at Tamborine Village and Canungra.

Hooning

Hooning is still an issue across the Scenic Rim and I implore you to report any hooning to the Hooning Hotline 131 666.

Unless residents report these incidents, then Police have no data to assist with targeting any hotspots. I am currently sitting on the Logan Council Hooning Taskforce and at our first meeting there were lots of ideas on measures that can be implemented from CCTV, using local laws with “No Standing” areas as well as a proposal to have old tyres punctured with a large hole to prevent their use. There are two types of hooning: 1. Local hoons that just like to squeal the tyres around a corner, 2. This is who I call the Fast and Furious crew, these hoons are the most trouble and meet in large numbers and will do burnouts at an inter-

section creating a mess of rubber and smoke. We are currently working with local Police to address this issue but we desperately need your help with reporting any instances of hooning to 131 666.

Weather Great to finally get some rain last week with more coming. The Region is looking at above average rainfall this sea-

son so please ensure that you prepare your property by 1. Cleaning your yard of loose items 2. Cleaning out house gutters, and 3. What ever happens do not drive through floodwater, “If it’s Flooded forget it”.

Canungra’s History Bank House 1937 By Joyce Libke

In the early days of settlement in Canungra the mail services were slow and sparse. When there was sufficient settlement in the 1900s for Alex Colvin to run a daily coach service, a Post Office was set up in the “Universal Provider” with Mrs Smith being the Post Mistress. In 1911 when the telephone came to Canungra, the necessary telephone exchange was added . With continued growth in the district, Harry House took over the Post Office in 1937 and he had a combined Post Office and home built in Christie Street (now Cafe Metz). The Post Office was a small room on the north east end of a verandah, entered by a set of very narrow French doors. Harry also sold ice creams and drinks. Apparently this Post Office quickly became too small so Harry had another building erected - this is the Post Office today. In the area between these two buildings, a small building was erected for the use of the Commercial Bank of Australia (to replace their original building on the creek bank) which is now The Shoe Vault. Harry House employed a local builder, Dave Day to erect these three buildings. After Harry House left Canungra his house became the Bank House ie the Bank Manager’s residence. When the Bank closed in 1979 the Education Department took it over as a residence for teachers at the rapidly growing school.

All three buildings are basically the same today, although the interiors have been altered over the years. The Post Office counter has been turned in various directions with the larger area at the back initially being used for the telephone exchange (complete with bed for the night boy to sleep on between calls). The Bank building (The Shoe Vault) has been opened up - originally the western half was the bank and the front room on the east was the Manager’s Office and the back room the “bank boys” quarters. In the mid 1950s I used to take the bank boys home on Monday evenings so my mother could give them a proper meal. After the closure of the bank in 1979 it has had various uses. Harry’s house has been home to various activities and has had verandahs and ramps added. I can remember piano lessons with Mrs Hodel in 1949 in her lounge room which is now Cafe Metz inner dining area. By the mid 1950s the eastern verandah was closed in with windows. I occasionally stayed with the Turners when the creek was up so I could get to the school daily. These are three significant buildings as they housed the essential services for Canungra residents, including the Jungle Training Centre during World War 2, and then for the local district’s recovery and expansion in the following years.

MOTORING NEWS

The 2020 Hyundai IONIQ arrived in late 2019 and came with some refreshing upgrades, from styling inside and out, to upgraded standard equipment. Having already driven the electric IONIQ, it was time to give the Plug-In Hybrid a run. Hyundai did a good job with the new styling revisions and made the car look much better than the first series, which is most often the case. The redesigned front and rear lighting, front grilles, and new alloy wheels create a fresh and progressive look. A new dashboard boasting premium softtouch finishes, ambient lighting in Premium and a new tablet-style multimedia unit. The larger, 10.25-inch satellite navigation multimedia system headlines the equipment upgrades, and incorporates Apple Car-

Play and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Hyundai’s extensive SmartSense safety suite continues in 2020 IONIQ, now with standard inclusion of High Beam Assist and upgraded Driver Attention Warning system featuring Leading Vehicle Departure Alert. The IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid offers the ability for electric-only trips up to 63 kilometres from its overnight fast-charge-capable 8.9kWh li-ion polymer battery. This may not seem like a lot but the 1.6-litre 4-cylinder can take you a long way because it sips a low 4.3 litres per 100km. The IONIQ offers a combined system output of 104 kW and 265 Nm which is more than enough to enjoy the ride on a daily basis. It also has well-designed suspension and steering which allows for easy driving and a bit of fun

NATURE’S GEMS

By Melissa Whitby For the last two months, I have travelled all over Queensland and encountered wildlife that never fails to amaze me. Many species I had not seen for years and one such creature was the Squatter Pigeon. This obscure pigeon can be recognised by the bluegrey around the eye, black and white lines beneath the eye and solid blue-grey throat/breast feathers. Within its distribution of Queensland and northern New South Wales, two distinctive races are

present - scripta and peninsulae. The birds I observed were from the nominate race scripta, thus, having blue-grey around the eye compared to race peninsulae which has pink-red around the eye. Younger birds are duller in colour and lack the prominent blue-grey throat/breast feathers. A similar species is the Partridge Pigeon, however, the Partridge Pigeon can only be observed in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Squatter Pigeons may be seen singly or in small groups. Usually, they are

AWL Pet of the Month EFFIE Effie is a sweet six month old Sharpei Cross Rottweiler. She has come a long way since she arrived at AWLQ, where she was scared and unsure of her surroundings. The team began working on her confidence and showing her there is lots of good in the world. She was sent to a loving foster home to help build her confidence! Effie’s new humans will need to be understanding and patient as she adjusts to her new home. She adores the company of other dogs and would benefit greatly from finding a home

CANUNGRA RSL SUB-BRANCH By Col Lee, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

Remembrance Day 2020 On 11th November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, ending the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July, they helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens in August, followed by the capture of Mont St Quentin and Peronne, and the breaching of German defences at the Hindenburg Line in September. By early October, the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle. They had achieved a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, but victory had come at a heavy cost. They suffered almost

48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead. In the four years of the war, more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the post-war decades. Why is it that this day passes by with most Australians not realising the sacrifices made by those who served in the Great War, The First World War, The War to end all Wars? If Remembrance Day were a public holiday, would it be different? This year, the Service of Remembrance is to be held on Wednesday, 11th November 2020 at D J Smith Memorial Park, commencing at 10.30 am. Yes, it is a Wednesday, but if you can spare 40 minutes please attempt to assemble. If you would like to lay a tribute, you are most welcome to do so.

Often overlooked, this beautiful rambling, twining, evergreen plant is doing very well in the recovering fire ground of our district. It is also a useful ground cover for the home garden. It is hardy and frost tolerant to -40C. In revegetation sites it can be used as early succession plant, creating quick cover for bare spots, incidentally offering habitat to little creatures: skinks, native snails and beetles. It does like to climb and will creep into shrubs and bushes; nice cover for birds that like a tangled mat of vegetation. It grows rampantly and can get away if allowed to clamber. As with all clambering plants, regular pruning will prevent it growing out of control. In the garden it tolerates hard pruning and will become a dense mat of foliage. It prefers well-drained soils with mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. It will grow in full sun or partial shade. Keep well-watered, especially when in flower but it will tolerate drought afterwards. A light fertilising once a year will help keep it happy; cutting back

after flowering will help keep it vigorous. It is so adaptable it will even grow at the beach with salt spray. This plant was named after J Kennedy, a London nurseryman and keen fan of Australian plants. The genus was named by Étienne Pierre Ventenat, who chose the name

to honor John Kennedy, son of the founder of a nursery called “The Vineyard” at Hammersmith. This nursery supplied exotic species to many very prominent British collectors for the collections on their estates.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

The recent rains have brought smiles to our faces and relief to those relying on tank water. Canungra township folk appreciate there will be a good supply of water for them to use. We give thanks to God for the answer to our prayers after a

lengthy dry spell. Another area of joy for St Luke’s is the increasing number of children attending “Little Lukies” after school on Mondays. It seems word is spreading about the fun and entertaining activities taking place. Why not come along and enjoy afternoon tea, creative crafts, lively activities and special bible-based messages. Jan Armstrong and her helpers enthusiastically work with the children for an hour immediately after school. It appears the adults are enjoying interacting with the children as well. The local Bendigo Bank Pitch Night is a great way to gain some much-needed funds to help Canungra community groups grow and development. St Luke’s were fortunate enough to “pitch” their desire for funding to cover the cost of our guest artist Stewart Morris at our forthcoming Christmas Carols. Stewart led the carols last year and he has again agreed to help make it a wonderful evening. Stewart is a former member of the 10 Tenors and is currently a member of the 3 Tenori. I encourage you to mark the carols night on your calendar - Wednesday 23rd December in the church grounds commencing at 6pm. There will be free chilled water and small gift bags of lollies and chocolates for the children. Bring a chair and a rug and come along to enjoy the evening. This is a wonderful way to remember the joy and special times, Christmas brings. We have five people presenting for baptism this month and we welcome all into the joy of belonging at St Luke’s. God bless them all.

Moriarty Park and Canungra Owls Soccer News With Bren Dalby

Canungra Owls Soccer Well our interesting season is over, barring our presentation morning which is on at 9am on Saturday 7th November. Our three teams who played this year we wish to thank ,and congratulate, on a really great season for all. It was a pleasure to watch our Under 6’s tearing around with such enthusiasm and demonstrating some very encouraging skills at such a young age – well done to players and our coach; hope you will all be involved again next season. The Under 12’s had a stormer of a year and made the Finals, putting in a super game against a very strong Palm Beach which sadly didn’t go our way in the penalty shoot out to finish – always a particularly awful way to end to be fair, but to get to a shoot out means you have given your everything in playing time so we are very proud of you all and you must be too. Another great coach brought out the best in all of you! The Men’s team games were always terrific entertainment and all the stops were pulled out in particular in the last game steaming home to win 7-0! Great bunch of guys and hope the promise of a 7-0 start to season next year will see them all sign up again! Social Men’s Soccer (I think only men’s at this stage has been discussed) will commence shortly on a Monday night. Watch the Facebook page or contact Cameron Mansfield for details. Talking of Cameron – what a year to be thrown into the job of President and what an absolutely terrific job he has done - that’s as well as playing , coaching, organising , mowing etc. Top job mate; we are lucky to have you at the helm ; having been involved for close to two decades with the Club there are few with more passion! Thank you indeed to all the committee helping make it all happen and lets all look forward to a hopefully at least somewhat more ‘normal’ season next year.

Go the Owls!

Moriarty Park We have been successful in achieving enough grant money from the Scenic Rim Regional Council in their new format ‘Smartygrants’ Community grants to purchase a mower. This may not seem anything to be overly excited about but I cannot express how excited we are about the fact that those who helped out with wee rideons, whipper snippers and even push mowers need no longer sweat like pit ponies and give of their time to maintain the park in playable condition. A massive thank you to you all; that’s another great part of living in this community – we just get it done together! A tremendous thank you to SRRC; this park is a credit to you and we wish to keep adding to it and improving the facilities and sports groups to accommodate more players, participants and those who wish to just come and have a BBQ and a bit of space to run around. We do have more plans of course or we wouldn’t be much of a committee! We thank also RACQ who have granted $5,000 to help fund the mower. Both these grants are greatly appreciated. We had applied for a lot of grants to kick start the post COVID era and get people together and active, the mower being an absolute priority. Our Book a Court Tennis system should get the green light shortly too; it came as a bit of a blow for us to discover that, whilst not our fault, the COVID situation whereby the system could not be implemented, had caused the project to go up in price dramatically from the original target. We will work it out and get it sorted soon. We also purchased a ‘you beaut’ bubbler for use by all, including a dog drinking bowl – from grant money previously given by SRRC; which we are not able to install until restrictions lifted, but sadly there was an astronomical quote received to plumb this bubbler in and therefore we were at a bit of a

The Canungra Times – November 2020

loss in the interim. At the Bendigo Bank pitch night Moriarty Park pitched on behalf of all users of Moriarty park, including the dogs and birds and were successful in receiving $1,000 towards the plumbing costs of this bubbler which makes this project a whole lot more achievable in the near future. Bendigo Bank also said they would love to help us out, again all users, with a solid, perspex fronted notice board so everyone can see what’s happening and when at Moriarty Park. This has been a ‘want’ for a long time and we appreciate the generosity of Bendigo Bank. Talking of generosity, the job wouldn’t be complete without Foodworks in the mix! I am talking well over a decade of generosity, Foodworks have helped out with bacon and eggs for the soccer season and burgers and steaks for burgers on the last game night; unsure how well this community would

function without Tony, Anne and all the crew at Foodworks – please take the time to thank them when you see them. We, of course, would like to do something for a Xmas Celebration and not really knowing what limitations may be in place at that time this is proving difficult to set in concrete. St Lukes are having a great Christmas Carols night on 23rd December so at this stage we are thinking perhaps a small event on 12th December which would enable us to advertise more details in the next Canungra Times. I will also pop a notice on FoodWorks notice board. Rest assured regardless of what transpires I have made the invitation to Santa Claus and he has promised to avail himself! Look out for that notice ... oh and give us a wave when you see us mowing lol! Moriarty Park meetings are generally the third Monday of the month at 6.45pm and all are welcome.

SPORT CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB Grant Success

Canungra Area Golf Club secured funding from the Active Restart Infrastructure Recovery Fund for $10,535 to assist us with several projects around the club and course. We are extremely grateful to the Department of Sport and Recreation for this opportunity. We are excited to be involved with the Bendigo Bank’s latest Pitch Night. We had a ball delivering our Pitch. We are grateful to be the recipients of $2,000. Thank you to our team who came together for a memorable performance. Thank you Fujiclean for sponsoring the Super Sixes Challenge. This was in lieu of their usual sponsorship of the Canungra Open which had to be cancelled this year. The challenge was to use six of your best holes to secure either best Gross, Stableford or SS v PAR.

Canungra’s Horse of the Year

The Blanc family had great success with their pony Kristamoor Lodge Kieran, affectionately known as ‘Kieran’ competing successfully at the Show Horse Council of Queensland’s Horse of the Year event in October. Sam Blanc, aged only seven years at the time of the competition, came runner up in the Leading Rein Pony class. The placing gives Sam first Golden Ticket entry to the Grand Nationals competition. Sam later received a letter from the Interschool Equestrian State Committee, selecting him for an encouragement award and congratulating him on his efforts at the State Championships. He also received a hand made hoof pick, crafted from a horse shoe by Richard Meaker. Sam’s mother, Genevieve Blanc, said he was very excited about his success. Not to be outdone, older sister Phoebe also rode Kieran at the

event, taking out Champion Ridden Shetland. Phoebe and Sam have successfully competed on the show circuit for several years. In 2018, Phoebe decided to take over Kieran’s exercising, feeding and training herself. This dedication to her pony paid off with the pair winning the open Shetland Class at the Equestrian Queensland Horse of the Year National Qualifying Show in September that year. Sam took out the Shetland Turnout class at the Queensland Royal Show the same year. The family purchased Kristamoor Lodge Kieran in 2016 from Jane Gerber in Victoria. He was already a very successful show pony, having won Barastoc -Newcomer Shetland of the year and Ridden Open Shetland of the year, placed first at Canberra Royal in the led Shetland Gelding class and third in the Ridden Shetland Gelding Class and sec-

At the time he had not proven himself as a children’s pony, however, having been ridden and educated by adults. Over the past four years Kieran has become a much loved

member of the Blanc family and proven himself, as Genevieve describes him, as the ultimate children’s pony. Both Phoebe and Sam are looking forward to competing at the Grand Nationals in 2021 with Kieran.
