ive years ago in 2018, when cannabis legalization was on the horizon, we incorporated Straight Dope Media Inc. in the hopes of creating what would become Cannabis Prospect Magazine, one of Canada’s largest trade magazines in the cannabis space. At the time we incorporated in February 2018 we didn’t know when federal legalization would occur later, so when Trudeau announced that summer that cannabis would be legalized within the year, beating all of our excectations, in October 2018, our first issue was published February the following year. The letter to the editor for that inaugural issue was stated clearly, “Why did I get into cannabis?” and the answer was simply, “It’s rare that a new industry crops up (no pun intended) overnight, and when it did, it would require an industry publication.” Now five years later, I find myself asking “Why did I get into adult toys/ novelties?” and my answer is the same, because it requires an industry publication, the only difference being that this industry is far from new. The idea for Pulse Magazine came to me last March. I’d been familiar with Xbiz Magazine for years now and when I discovered that Canada didn’t have its own trade publication for this industry I thought to myself “Why not?” Australia has Synergy Magazine, the UK has Erotic Trade Online, Spain has Sensations, Germany has Erofame and the US, of course, has Xbiz and StorErotica, not to mention a slew of trade shows among the bunch. Why shouldn’t Canada have its own magazine in this space? Frankly, it astounded me that Canada didn’t. No magazines, no trade shows and no trade associations to speak of. Realistically, I probably could’ve started this publication 15 years ago and not lost a step. Over the months of putting this magazine together, it still astounds me, along with the dozens of manufacturers/ distributors I’ve spoken to over the months, that there hasn’t been one for Canada. So here we are, planning to publish six issues for the year 2024 and see how it goes but if initial reaction has been a sign of things to come, then we can expect great things to come from Pulse Magazine. So here’s to the future, and the longevity of the adult novelty/toy industry.

Since its launch in 2006, more than 150,000 businesses have signed up for a B Corp Impact Assessment, yet only 4,500 have been certified, a testament to its extremely high standards. While working toward this, there is a whole range of other certificates out there that you can look at for your business such as Certified Vegan, Carbon-Neutral, Plastic Negative, the list goes on. All of these certificates offer positive

steps and make it known that you’re looking to take sustainability seriously. They also allow you access to a really great network of other businesses who are always willing to offer advice based on their experience of sustainability; people who have walked the path before you so there will be plenty of opportunities to join working groups and get peer-to-peer advice. We know that choosing to implement eco-practices into business, especially into an already established and thriving business, can be difficult and may seem daunting but it’s important to remember that anything big always starts with small steps. Start small, don’t overwhelm yourself and know there are plenty of others along the way who will be only too happy to answer questions and help where they can.
