ASSESSMENT TIMELINES

Registered applicants for places in Year 9 sit our assessment on one day at Canford, either in Year 6 or Year 7.

We recommend taking the earlier Year 6 option unless there are good reasons not to do so.

Please see the information opposite regarding the format of our assessment days, including use of our bespoke online computerised standardised test.

YEARS 6 AND 7

THE ASSESSMENT DAY

Format

This day is a mix of activities, tests and informal interviews. While some apprehension is only to be expected, we try to make the day as enjoyable and positive as we can.

Some of our testing is online. Our standardised testing is bespoke to Canford and created by Quest Assessments (previously Atom Testing). Children will be assessed in Maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning and these are completed in one hour 10 minutes.

To find out more, please visit the dedicated Quest page online https://app.questassessments.com/public/taster/canford-school

Outcome

After the assessment day we will contact you with one of the following outcomes:

• A ‘firm’ place at Canford. We will expect a satisfactory reference in Year 8 as a measure of a pupil’s current level of attainment.

• A ‘waiting list’ place which is regularly reviewed.

LATE ENTRY

If your child has missed our assessment testing options, please get in touch to find out if registration is still open for your child’s year of entry. If last minute places remain available, we will arrange testing for suitable candidates.

Year 8 academic scholarship registrations are open to all, including those who do not already hold a place. All scholarships must be sat in person at Canford.

ASSESSMENT

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY DO YOU ASSESS?

We want pupils to join Canford who are the best fit, so that their senior school years offer the most positive experience possible. We are not just looking for academic aptitude. Wider ability, character, attitude and the potential to contribute and thrive here are also valued highly. Assessment allows us to meet each individual pupil and the chance to see them working within a group. Equally if Canford is not the place for them, the assessment process will flag this, giving families time to look for alternatives.

IS IT BETTER TO REGISTER AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE?

We recommend registration as early as possible. Those registered by the end of Year 5 will be invited to Explore Day at the beginning of Year 6.

CAN I CHOOSE WHICH YEAR MY CHILD IS ASSESSED?

Yes. This is a decision for parents. It is recommended that you also consult with the Head at your child’s current school to choose the most appropriate option. While the majority of places are offered in Year 6, we will keep places for Year 7 applicants and for strong late candidates, but in general those applying in Year 8 may find only waiting list places are available.

DO YOU ASK FOR A REFERENCE FROM THE CURRENT SCHOOL?

Yes. References add an important dimension to our understanding of individual pupils.

WHAT PROPORTION OF CHILDREN ARE OFFERED PLACES?

In recent years, about 60% of those attending assessment have subsequently been offered places.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD IS PUT ON THE WAITING LIST?

Those not offered a place immediately after their assessment day will join the waiting list. Pupils will be reconsidered as places become available and many do find places emerge in due course.

DOES THE FACT I ALREADY HAVE A CHILD IN THE SCHOOL MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Younger siblings of current pupils who attend the assessments in Year 6 or Year 7 will not be in competition with other applicants for places, provided they reach our required entry standard in the assessment.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS ASSESSMENT?

It is still worth getting in touch as late places do come up and our door is seldom completely closed.

CAN I ENTER FOR AN ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP WITHOUT SITTING ANY ASSESSMENTS?

Yes, academic scholarships are open to all, regardless of whether one already has a place in the school or not. We reserve a number of places for those who win academic scholarships without having sat any previous tests. Those unsuccessful at academic scholarship will be able to join our waiting list, but there can be no guarantee that a place will become available for them.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Once you have registered your child, we will contact you by email at the appropriate time to invite them to enter the next available assessment option.
