Is There Ice in Your AC? Here’s What’s Wrong

Common Causes of Ice in Your AC

There are four common reasons for ice forming in air conditioning units.

1. You Have a Dirty Air Filter

One of the main reasons why you may be seeing ice on your air conditioning unit is due to a dirty air filter. Your air filter is responsible for removing dust and debris from the air before it enters your AC.

2. Your Refrigerant Level is Too Low

If your AC unit is low on refrigerant, it cannot remove heat efficiently from your home which can cause the evaporator coils to freeze. This is a problem that requires a professional HVAC technician to fix since adding refrigerant to your AC unit requires specialized equipment and knowledge.

3. Your Thermostat Isn’t Working Properly

4. The Evaporator Coil Is Dirty

If your thermostat isn’t working correctly, it may be telling your AC unit to run longer than necessary which can cause the evaporator coils to collect ice.  To fix this problem, you may need to replace your thermostat or have it recalibrated by a professional HVAC technician.

The evaporator coil is responsible for removing heat from the air that is blown over it. When the coil becomes dirty or covered in debris, it cannot remove heat as effectively which can cause the coil to freeze.

Address the issue by having your evaporator coil cleaned regularly by a professional HVAC
