PeRfoRming ARTs cenTRe Concept: Limbo

Ritual typically performed at wakes. It is believed that the people of Trinidad during this dance, portray going down in the hold of the slave ship which carried them into Slavery

No matter how they twisted or turned, squired or arched, they would go deeper and deeper. Some would make it, some would not.

The Site The Submersion

The Limbo dance interprets the journey of slaves going into the hold of the slave, passing under objects that cause them to bend backward. The dance ends with sort a celebration. Jumping up into the air, glad to be free from the shackles of their oppressor. Based on the dance, the designed submerges the ground floor to mimic what it would have been like for our ancestors to enter into the hold of the slave ship.
