Stephen Roberts

CEO, Cancer Council NSW

Chairman, POSH Committee

“Welcome to the POSH Auction for 2010. Since POSH began 11 years ago, almost $6 million has been raised for cancer research and support services and we thank you sincerely for your support.”

“On behalf of the POSH Committee, thank you for your generous contribution to Cancer Council and your attendance here tonight.”

This amazing outcome is possible thanks to the generous support of our POSH sponsors and corporate partners who donate so many wonderful auction items and experiences to raise much-needed funds each year. Cancer Council recognises no-one can fight the battle against cancer alone, which is why we work in partnership with other organisations that have the strength and capability to make a difference. Organisations supporting POSH are just one example of this partnership approach in action. The success of POSH is also due to the generosity of our guests at this event. You bid enthusiastically and give with gusto, and support our mission to defeat cancer. As with any gala event, nothing would be possible without the commitment of our POSH Committee. They work tirelessly to open doors for Cancer Council, developing relationships with partners and organisations, and I thank them for their work.

Nearly 50 per cent of all cancers have known risk factors and are, in theory, preventable. This is an important message to share with as many people as possible. When you look at the facts, it’s obvious why we focus many of our efforts on ‘preventing the preventable’, having made much progress in recent years including tobacco control, SunSmart programs and massawareness prevention campaigns. With your support, we will continue to target key risk factors such as tobacco, nutrition and physical activity and sun protection.

I am honoured to welcome you in my first year as POSH Committee Chairman. Our POSH Committee are dedicated supporters of Cancer Council, and take great pride in this hallmark event and its significant contribution to Cancer Council’s mission.

Cancer survival rates in NSW have improved by 25 per cent over the past two decades, thanks to advances made through research, community uptake of prevention and screening, and advocacy for better care and equity in access to services. We take great pride in this figure, and the role Cancer Council has played in it. But there is still much work to be done, and I can assure you that the funds raised through this POSH Auction will be well used in making further inroads.

I would also like to welcome any new guests to the POSH Auction, and wish you a very enjoyable evening of bidding, dining and entertainment.

We are all here tonight to help defeat cancer, which is the biggest cause of premature death in Australia. It contributes overwhelmingly to the overall burden of disease in Australian society. Cancer affects us all, not just patients and their families.

We are delighted to see so many guests return year after year for the POSH Auction. With your generosity, we have raised many millions of dollars for Cancer Council’s research and support services.

In previous years, POSH has focused on the extensive efforts Cancer Council undertakes in cancer research and support services. Tonight, you will hear more about cancer prevention through our keynote speaker Professor Graham Colditz, an eminent cancer prevention expert and epidemiologist. As Dr Andrew Penman has already mentioned, nearly 50 per cent of all cancers have known risk factors. Our hope is to raise vital funds and awareness of these risk factors in order to prevent many thousands of people being diagnosed with cancer each year.

Tonight your meals are designed with prevention in mind, featuring ‘2 and 5’ serves, i.e. two fruit and five vegetables throughout the courses. Being healthy and preventing cancer can indeed be something we can all do and enjoy. In 2009, there were more than 39,000 people diagnosed with cancer in NSW. Whilst this figure is shocking, it is only the tip of the iceberg when considering the ramifications a cancer diagnosis has on a person’s loved ones and community. With ongoing investment in cancer prevention, we hope to see many thousands of people spared this trauma each year. For many of us involved, this event is just one part of our overall work with Cancer Council. Many of our loyal POSH supporters and committee members take on other roles throughout the year. I have been a Cancer Council Board member since October 2007, and I take a great sense of achievement from the work I am able to do in this capacity. I know my colleagues on the POSH Committee and Board also feel a great sense of responsibility and achievement in representing this flagship organisation in its mission to defeat cancer.

“Our vision will be realised when lives are not cut short by cancer nor their quality diminished. I encourage you to share that vision and thank you for supporting Cancer Council through your generous involvement in our POSH Auction.”

“We thank you for being here tonight and for your contribution to Cancer Council through the POSH Auction. Your enthusiastic participation is making a difference and will continue to do so.”

“I am very pleased to be with you tonight at the 2010 POSH Auction, where we unite to raise funds to support research and prevent cancer.”

“Many of us at Cancer Council say that the cure for cancer is prevention. Thanks to your support, we continue to ‘prevent the preventable’.”

I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, and my specialist area of research is cancer prevention so I’m particularly excited to be working with Cancer Council here, among many other organisations globally. My message to you is simple; the majority of all cancers can be prevented. For a long time, it was commonly believed that getting cancer was something we had no control over. However, we now know much more about the causes of cancer than we did in the past. We know that being a healthy weight, eating well and regular physical activity can lower your cancer risk. Among middle-aged women weight loss reduces risk of breast cancer. We also know that there are other benefits of this lifestyle – including preventing heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. One important fact is, after tobacco, lifestyle is the next most modifiable risk factor for reducing your risk of cancer. In the more than 30 years I have worked in medicine and health, I have seen how changing the lifestyle factors associated with cancer can make some enormous gains. For example, smoking that causes many cancers and sun exposure that causes melanoma have decreased significantly. Unfortunately, with increasing rates of obesity in countries such as Australia and the United States, the burden of many chronic diseases such as cancer are likely to increase in years ahead. The prevalence of overweight and obesity increased substantially in the 10 years from 1995 to 2005 when half of Australian adults were either overweight or obese. In fact over 20 years, the proportion who are obese has doubled. This trend of increasing obesity translates directly to increases in cancer rates. We may soon reach 15 per cent of all cancers caused by obesity. But this situation is not all doom and gloom, because there are some important lifestyle choices we can all make to reduce cancer risk. There are a few simple but powerful strategies on page 5. I thank you all for your interest in this important life-saving subject, and am very proud to be with you tonight to raise funds and the awareness of cancer prevention.

This year, more than 39,000 people were newly diagnosed with cancer in NSW, and we believe every single diagnosis is one too many. Given nearly 50 per cent of all cancers have known risk factors, we work tirelessly to reinforce cancer prevention and provide people with cancer smart options. Our prevention work covers four key areas – tobacco control, skin cancer, nutrition and cancer screening. They are based on our knowledge and experience of the risk factors for cancer and what can be changed through education, environment and policy.

Our challenge to you starts here, with important lifestyle choices you can make to reduce cancer risk: • • • • • • • •

Quit smoking, or help someone you know to quit Be SunSmart – protect yourself and your family in the sun, demand shade in public places and take care never to burn Move your body and stay in shape – be physically active at least 30 minutes most days and aim for a healthy weight Eat for health – choose a diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, with limited intake of red meat TTry alcohol-free days and non-alcoholic drinks Adopt “walk and talk” meetings at work – ensure staff can use staircases and fruit replaces ‘junk food’ machines Have age-appropriate check-ups with your GP Apply your connections and professional influence to deliver these changes to everyone.

Professor Robyn Ward

Brain Cancer Research Advocate

(MBBS PhD UNSW, FRACP) Bowel Cancer Researcher and Oncologist. 10 year recipient of Cancer Council research grants.

“It’s an immense pleasure to be involved with Cancer Council NSW and the Brain Cancer Research Advocates group to raise funds and awareness for brain cancer research. I’ve been searching for some time for a worthy cause that I felt passionate about, and could get behind to really make a difference. I was shocked to learn that brain cancer often affects young, healthy people in the prime of their lives – people my age. Cancer Council NSW isn’t just about the most common cancers, or the cancers that make the front page of the paper. Cancer Council NSW is about all cancers – including brain cancer, of which there is currently little public awareness, and which is under-funded and under-researched. There’s been no significant improvement in survival rates for brain cancer in the last two decades. I’m really proud to be working with Cancer Council NSW and other passionate advocates and supporters to change this, and to show that ‘Grey Matters’.”

The Cancer Council Posh Auction 2010

Dr Charlie Teo (MBBS FRACS) “I have personally been involved in the care of brain cancer patients for the last 20 years. Although we have made very little progress in terms of research and finding a cure, there certainly has been progress regarding surgery and surgical technique and patients’ lives are being extended by this improvement in technology. However, technology is only one aspect of the total care of a cancer patient. I am thrilled to see the Cancer Council taking this national initiative of collecting tumours from all around the country to uncover a common thread by which to eradicate this terrible disease. I implore the public to support the Cancer Council in its quest to find a cure for cancer overall and specifically brain cancer. I personally will do as much as I can to help them in this quest.”

“A healthy mixture of curiosity and passion convinces most researchers that their efforts will bear fruit – they will discover something important or measurably improve the lives of people with cancer. For me, my passion for research stems from a belief that the overall standard of health care is improved in countries which value the research enterprise and build a research savvy health workforce. Non-government organisations like CCNSW play a vital role in supporting research because they involve consumers and provide support for projects in which conventional organisations do not invest. Their role in supporting the community through the Helpline and more recently through Cancer Council Information Centres in hospitals is of immeasurable value.”

David Williamson Australian Playwright “I’m happy to support the efforts of the Cancer Council. This insidious disease killed both of my parents and causes immeasurable distress throughout the world, so it’s a pleasure to be able to help the efforts of the Cancer Council in any small way.”

It is my pleasure to continue to be involved in the POSH Auction and wish Cancer Council every success in their fundraising and research. I hope one day to look back nostalgically on a time when there was no easy cure for cancer. Il Pellicano in Tuscany – 3 nights

Italy is a country of great charm for travellers of a wide variety of tastes. 4 Walking Tasmania – The Maria Island Walk

5 David Williamson Theatre Experience

There are few places on the planet that offer the total tranquillity and unspoiled natural beauty of Maria Island. A special place where the fresh air, the crystal clear waters, breathtaking beauty and spectacular wildlife work in harmony to invigorate, recharge and stimulate anyone who is lucky enough to venture there.

Join David Williamson and his wife Kristin, at a performance of the World Premiere production of his latest work, Rhinestone Rex & Miss Monica, at Sydney’s historic ensemble Theatre. Before the performance indulge in a sumptuous three course dinner, prepared by head chef Ashraf Saleh at Bayly’s restaurant estaurant at the Ensemble whilst enjoying the idyllic view of Sydney Harbour and private conversation with Australia’s greatest living playwright and social commentator.

The four day Maria Island Walk is a gentle journey where small groups of eight guests and two guides enjoy easy bushwalking by day and then at night relax with candlelit dining and elegant and comfortable accommodation. The whole island is a national park sanctuary and home to many rare Tasmanian birds and animals which are largely unafraid of visitors. Your two friendly local guides share their deep knowledge of the island with you and then at night produce delicious gourmet meals from fresh local produce, served with fine Tasmanian wines. The first two nights are spent in elegant private wilderness camps and the final night is spent in the heritage-listed Bernacchi House in the settlement of Darlington.

What do a classical musician and retired country and western singer have in common? Not a lot according to Monica who really just wants Gary, aka Rhinestone Rex, to do the job he’s being paid for and renovate her kitchen. She hates his taste in music, his attitudes to women and the plinths he wants to put on her kitchen cabinets. Gary can’t find much about Monica to recommend to anyone but still finds her attractive in a cold, rigid and inflexible kind of way. Can they find a way past all their conflicts towards a harmonious and fulfilling relationship? Or will their differences keep them from making beautiful music together?

Since commencing operations in 2003 the Maria Island Walk has become one of Australia’s most awarded tourism experiences, winning five national Adventure Tourism and Ecotourism awards, most recently Best Adventure Tourism in the 2008 Australian Tourism Awards.

David Williamson, Ensemble Theatre and Bayly’s Restaurant are proud to once again support Cancer Council NSW’s POSH Auction.

This unique wilderness experience includes:

• • • • •

4 day guided walk for 2 people. All gourmet meals, wine and accommodation, two guides, national park entry fee. Guests carry light packs and walk on tracks or beaches. Longest day 13km. Trip starts with a hotel pickup in Hobart and return to Hobart on day 4. To be taken between October and December 2010.

Must be taken on Friday 22 October 2010. Join David Williamson for a Sumptuous 3 course dinner at Bayly’s Restaurant and then accompany him to the performance of Rhinestone Rex & Miss Monica.

Value: You’ll be dining out on this one for years! *this item is tax deductible

Ken has held over 70 solo exhibitions in Australia, Japan, the UK and France and is one of our most successful commercial artists. Beach Late Summer II, 2004 is the product of decades of drawing and painting on the beaches of Sydney. Done’s personal shorthand enables him to capture an immediate reaction, a feeling or a nuance. Beach Late Summer II identifies a Sydney summer in full bloom. The intense yellow of the sand emanates heat whilst the shapes speak of the languid energy one feels at the end of a hot day in late summer. 41 Pretty Polly in Yellow by Peter Griffen

42 Through The Air by Regina Noakes

43 Paris Streets by Dallas Bromley

Sir Sidney Nolan was a very important and imaginative Australian artist who has had a very big influence on me. His painting Pretty Polly Mine which hangs in the Art Gallery of NSW, includes an eccentric looking parrot flying above an outback mine.

Regina Noakes is a full-time artist who now lives and works in Perth after studying in the USA, Singapore and Italy.

Dallas Bromley’s choice of destination is often a last minute decision, but her obsession to explore cities – their people and architecture – has been an ongoing affair. Paris remains a sublime city, embracing the senses with exotic aromas and visual sensations, where she follows and paints the elegant inhabitants of the wide avenues of the Tuileries, and the earthy richness of the Parisians living life to its full amongst the historic warmth and colour of this vital city.

In response to this painting I have painted a “Pretty Polly” series of which Pretty Polly in Yellow is one. It depicts the colour of the bird, but also I have tried to capture the speed and shrieking sound that is a major feature of this iconic native. •

Pretty Polly in Yellow, 76cm x 102cm, acrylic on canvas.

Value: $2,500

She artistically explores the character and essence of particular locations or memories and then expresses them in visual language in her own inventive and very distinctive manner. The lovable figures in her paintings stare out upon the world and they seem to reach beyond the viewer into some other, much greater space. They are hypnotic and portray a sense of reverie, mystery, drama and fun. Several works are held in celebrities private collections. •

Through the Air, 91cm x 76cm, acrylic on canvas.

Value: $5,500

Over the last decade, Dallas’s works have been exhibited around Australia and overseas in Hong Kong, China, Fiji, the UK and the USA. She has been a winner and selected finalist in several judged exhibitions, including The Sulman Prize at the AGNSW, the Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale Art Prize and the ANL Maritime Art Prize. 44 Billabong by Peter Fennell

45 La Perla by Petrena Shaw

46 Red Veil by Paul Battams

47 Forest by Rodney Monk

Drawing and painting have been a part of Peter Fennell’s life since childhood. His work shows his versatility – his subjects ranging from cities and beaches to the bush. Peter exhibits in galleries around Australia and is represented in many private collections in the USA, England, Germany and Saudi Arabia. Billabong demonstrates Peter’s ability to capture nature in the early stages of spring. His use of light acts as a kind of tunnel, drawing the viewer into the understated arrangement of the painting, blending colour and form with life and elan.

Petrena Shaw’s on-going fascination with the figurative form has been a formidable passion over the last decade. This tactile and sensual work has an everlasting beauty in bronze.

Paul graduated from Camberwell Art School in London in 1976 with a BA Hons degree. After a brief career in music – struggling to become a “rock star” – he arrived in Sydney in 1979 together with guitars, paint brushes and other band members. Painting full-time whilst songwriting and gigging around the pubs and clubs, he began to build a solid interest in his artwork. And his work is now included in public and private collections both here and around the globe. At 55, Paul says of his career: “It takes a lifetime of committed painting to become an apprentice to the arts! I reckon I’m nearly half way there!”

rodney odney Monk paints on canvas and glass and walls. He paints to delight and celebrate our humanity. He makes art that invigorates public spaces. A veteran of over 150 murals, his work ranges from local community-art projects to commercial development projects. Monk has won many awards; Think Globally, Act Locally in George Street, Redfern was awarded the Sir John Sulman prize by the Art Gallery of NSW. An international search recently saw Monk selected to paint a mural in Peterborough, New Hampshire, USA and he is currently painting at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney, where he is completing a series of murals in the oncology and eye clinics.

Billabong, 61cm x 91.5cm, oil on canvas.

Value: $5,200

Though she has a traditional background of study, her work also reveals an exotic contemporary side. Ikebana ‘Japanese Floral Design’ is an elegant discipline whose clean uncomplicated lines influence the potency of her work. Portraiture is another avenue of her work, being one of the most difficult areas in sculpture to execute well. Petrena recently sculpted a bust of Lindsay Hassett for the Crickets Captains’ Walk in Cootamundra. Petrena’s works have been exhibited around Australia and overseas, and are held in many private collections.

Red Veil belongs to a series of work which explores the possibilities of successive layering of thinned paint, masking or hiding some mystery or previously written visual story. This visual layering enriches the text.

48 Beach Daisies by Nada Herman-Witkamp Born into an artistic family in 1965, nada herman-Witkamp has been painting and winning prizes for her work since she was 10. She was taught by her father, Ted Herman, and her grandfather, Sali Herman OBE – both famous for their contributions to Australian art. Nada has exhibited regularly for the past 12 years and has collectors worldwide, particularly in the USA and Europe. Her happy energetic paintings use lush impasto oils, which Nada sometimes applies straight from the tube and paints wet into wet over a base colour, perhaps with a palette knife. Such methods make the paintings distinctly hers. 64 Play Golf with Peter O’Malley

65 Play Your Best Golf with PING

66 Family Holiday at Palm Cove 7 nights

67 Dinner for 10 at Milsons

This unique experience has you and two lucky friends making up a golf foursome with Peter O’Malley, playing 18 holes of never-to-be-forgotten golf at the refurbished Lakes Golf Course in Sydney.

The technology of the G15 iron provides the high-launching, maximum forgiveness attributes that bring consistency to your iron play. The stainless steel iron’s cavity design features a new Custom Tuning Port (CTP) which expands the perimeter weighting and increases the moment of inertia.

Enjoy seven nights accommodation at Peppers Beach Club & Spa, 20 minutes from Cairns airport. This two-bedroom lagoon suite and spa room features interconnecting rooms dual keyed into a One Bedroom Suite and Spa Room.

Perfect for a corporate dinner with colleagues or a private dinner with friends, Milsons, one of Sydney’s premier restaurants at Kirribilli, is offering dinner for 10 with fine wines. Milsons provides a refreshing dining alternative to the traditional business function with ample on-street parking, and has been awarded one chef hat by The Sydney Morning Herald for the last 9 years running. The ambience at Milsons is fresh, modern and relaxed, the service professional and attentive. Valid until April 2011.

Peter O’Malley continues to be one of Australia’s leading golfers following his win in the 2005 New Zealand PGA on the Australasian Tour, in addition to winning seven professional events in Europe and Australia and representing Australia in three World Cups. Peter has also taken out the highest honour for an amateur – the Eisenhower Trophy. Born in Bathurst, NSW, the likeable O’Malley is known for his driving accuracy and precise iron play.

Weight savings from a thinner face is re-positioned to the toe for added forgiveness on mishits and its wider sole produces a higher launch angle. Stronger lofts combine with a centre of gravity located low and farther from the face to produce longer shots without sacrificing the higher trajectory required in a maximum forgiveness iron.

This memorable game of golf will be arranged at a mutually convenient time. Valid until December 2010. Subject to Peter’s availability. Green fees at the guests’ expense.

This item is guaranteed to improve your handicap.
