SATURDAY 19 MARCH 2016 THE WESTIN SYDNEY

W

elcome to POSH 2016. As we celebrate our 17th year of POSH, I thank you for your ongoing and dedicated commitment to Cancer Council NSW and the work we do. Each year our friends and supporters of POSH come together with a shared vision of beating cancer. With your support, we continue to make progress towards achieving this vision. Cancer Council NSW is proud to be one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia – conducting and funding world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer. Research is fundamental to unlocking the answers that will help us beat cancer. At Cancer Council NSW, we continue to remain committed to research across all stages of the cancer journey: research into investigating the causes of cancer; research into the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer; research that supports people as they adjust to life after a cancer diagnosis; and research into cancer and its higher incidence in disadvantaged communities. All of this work is leading to major improvements. Everything we do is only possible because of people like you. On behalf of Cancer Council NSW, I would like to thank each of you for your generosity and support.

C

ancer Council NSW works across every area of every cancer so that we can support and improve the experience for cancer patients and their families across NSW and prevent cancer in future generations. The funds raised through events like POSH are vital for us to continue our work. POSH has grown from a small group of friends who came together 17 years ago, to now include more than 750 people attending each year. This growth and year on year success of POSH is thanks to the generosity of our corporate sponsors and donors and the tireless efforts of the POSH committee, many of whom have been involved from the very beginning. I want to thank this year’s organising committee for their dedication, passion and drive in making POSH an outstanding social event with a purpose. As with all Cancer Council events, we could not do it without the support of our wonderful volunteers who take on so many roles and responsibilities. Thank you for your time and commitment. I’m looking forward to a great POSH 2016 and I hope you will join in supporting this fantastic event for a worthy cause.

T

hanks to your support, Cancer Council NSW is able to conduct and fund world-class research right across the cancer journey. Over the last 60 years, researchers funded by Cancer Council NSW have made some remarkable discoveries. They have created more effective radiotherapy techniques and found a completely new way of treating cancers by uncovering the source of their immortality. Last year alone we funded 58 lead researchers from 19 institutions. We also have an active internal research team that specialises in providing decision-makers with an evidence base to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The work of researchers now based at Cancer Council NSW has underpinned major upcoming changes to the National Cervical Screening Program in Australia. These changes will substantially reduce both cervical cancer rates and the number of screening tests women will need in their lifetime. With over 39,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed every year in NSW alone, our commitment to research will ensure that we keep making these important discoveries; this will help us achieve our vision of beating cancer.

Adjunct Professor Karen Canfell Director, Cancer Research Division Cancer Council NSW

T

he very first POSH committee was a unique group of socially charitable people who got together to raise funds for Cancer Council NSW. Since its inception, POSH has continued to draw more attendees, sponsors, committee members and donors. Each of us here this evening is an extension of that initial circle of POSH friends and on behalf of the committee I warmly welcome you to POSH 2016. We have all been touched by cancer. It is a disease that strikes without discrimination. None of us here tonight, nor our loved ones, are beyond its reach. My dear mother lost her fight to cancer in 2002 at 50 years of age. In her journal she had written the words; ‘Cancer is so limited. It cannot shatter hope, it cannot destroy friendship and it cannot quench the spirit.’ I am honoured to be a part of the POSH Gala Ball. The unquenchable spirit of generosity from all involved has proven those written words to be so very true. Over the past 16 years POSH has raised over $12 million to support Cancer Council NSW’s research programs. ‘Once Upon a Time’ … this evening we again have that opportunity to have fun, enjoy and, as friends, continue to make a significant difference.

17. THE ARKABA WALK BY WILD BUSH LUXURY The Arkaba Walk brings luxury touches to an immersive bush experience in the ancient Flinders Ranges and our private wildlife conservancy in outback South Australia. 600 million years of geological history echo through the stratified layers of Wilpena Pound and the Elder Range, providing spectacular backdrops throughout the walk; while craggy sandstone bluffs and dry creek beds lined with River Red gums offer a quintessential outback landscape. Large numbers of red and western grey kangaroos, wallaroos and emus are regular sightings along the walk, and the country is littered with the stories, and often heroic failures, of early pioneers who tried to eke a living from the harsh but beautiful country. Your Arkaba Walk for 2 people includes wonderful field guides; 2 nights camping in deluxe swags on signature star beds; 1 night in the rustically chic 150-year-old Arkaba Homestead, member of Luxury Lodges of Australia; all gourmet meals and drinks; a support vehicle for transporting luggage; a suitable hydration backpack; and a donation to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy Walk season operates 17 March to 16 October 2016 with departures every Thursday (and every Sunday during May, August, September and October) To be booked on a departure with other walkers and travel to be taken in our 2016 walk season. www.wildbushluxury.com

53. CATHY FREEMAN THE GOLDEN GIRL

54. RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Cathy Freeman’s role in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games embedded her name forever in Olympic history. She lit the cauldron in the Olympic Stadium - after the torch had been handled by six Australian women, who had between them won 15 gold medals - in an Opening Ceremony that celebrated both a century of women’s participation and the heritage of indigenous Australians.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will take place at venues all around the city of Rio from 5 to 21 August. It’s the first time Brazil, or any country in South America, will host the Games.

Eleven nights later she fulfilled a mission that had absorbed her life: she won the 400m final, becoming the athlete of the Games. The weight of expectations she carried into that race was enormous. Apart from the hopes of a nation, there was an extra load - 200 years of history. Fourth out of the blocks, she appeared to catapult herself clear of her rivals in the straight. Later she danced through a victory lap, carrying Australian and Aboriginal flags. Limited edition, autographed and framed poster by Cathy Freeman Official Australia Olympic Team memorabilia from the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

This is your chance to secure a unique experience at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. 2 people will be escorted by a member of the Australian Olympic Committee on a VIP Village Visit including a visit to the Australian Team Headquarters and the Main Dining at a mutually convenient date/time Please be advised that transport and accommodation are at the winner’s own expense. www.olympic.org/rio-2016-summer-olympics

67. ‘A STROLL ON THE BEACH’ BY MEL BRIGG

68. ‘NEUTRAL BAY’ BY NADA HERMAN

Mel Brigg has forged a distinct and powerful artistic style that was influenced by human and geographic landscapes and the transitory connection between people and places.

Nada Herman creates work that seems to have grown from the natural joy of creation. The artist grew up in the beach community of northern Sydney, and her body of work reflects this influence, featuring brightly coloured seaside vistas and the wonderful life that is possible in these idyllic surroundings. Her style is lush. Brushstrokes are swathes of verdant hues and rich with texture.

‘A Stroll on the Beach’ is one of Mel’s paintings of sea scenes in south eastern Queensland. Like all good art it tells a story, and inspires an emotional reaction. Born in South Africa, Mel is self-taught and commenced his painting career in 1970. As well as having exhibited in England, Portugal and Singapore, he has had numerous solo and joint exhibitions in South Africa and Australia, and has been a finalist in the Moran National Portrait Prize. He is represented by galleries around Australia. ‘A Stroll on the Beach’, acrylic on board, framed under glass, 28cm x 38cm. www.melbrigg.com

Feeling at one in this underwater world, Dallas has been painting the Immersion series since 2001 when she was sponsored by Captain Cook Cruises in Fiji. ‘Aquamarine’, mixed media on canvas, 101cm x 101cm. www.dallasbromley.com
