What is colon?

A colon is the long, coiled, tubelike organ. It removes water from digested food and the remaining material in the solid form called stool or solid waste, moves through the colon to the rectum and leaves the body through the anus. It is also known as a large bowel or large intestine.

What is colon cancer?

Colorectal or Colon cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the large intestine (colon). The colon is the tail part of the digestive tract. It mainly affects older adults, though it can develop at any age.

When colon cancer and rectal cancer combines, then it is known as colorectal cancer, which begins in the rectum.

At an early stage, it usually begins as small, noncancerous clumps of cells called polyps that form on the inside of the colon. Over time some of these polyps can become colon cancers.

In the case of colon cancer, many treatments are available, including surgery, radiation therapy, and drug treatments, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.

Causes of colon cancer?

Colon cancer begins with normal or healthy cells in the colon develop changes in their DNA. These healthy cells grow and divide in a systematic way to keep your body functioning normally. But when a cell’s DNA is damaged and becomes cancerous, cells continue to divide in an unsystematic way. As the cells accumulate, they form a tumor and cause colon cancer.

These cancer cells grow with time and they kept on invading and destroying the normal tissue nearby. And these cells can also travel to other body parts.

TYPES OF COLON CANCER Adenocarcinoma: The great majority of colon cancer is adenocarcinoma. In this case, the cells that line the inside surface of the colon.

Carcinoid tumors: It starts in hormone-producing cells in the small and large intestines.

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors: It is a type of tumor of soft tissue sarcoma that can be found anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. This type of tumors is rare in the case of the colon.

Lymphoma: It is a cancer of the immune system. It mainly starts in the lymph nodes but can start in the colon.

Hereditary Colon Cancer: In this case, people get colorectal cancer because of specific mutations in the genes that are passed from parents to children, and referred to as hereditary.

According to a study, about 5% to 10% of people get colorectal cancer because of hereditary.

TYPES OF SURGERY Surgery is main treatment for colon cancers. Type of surgery depend upon the stage of the cancer.

Polypectomy and local excision: This type of surgery mainly is done at the early stage of cancers (stage 0 and some-early stage I tumors) and most polyps can be removed.

In polypectomy, the cancer is removed as a part of the polyp, which is cut at its stalk.

In the case of local excision, tools are used through the colonoscope to remove small cancers on the inside lining of the colon with a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue on the wall of the colon.

Colectomy: In this surgery a part of colon is removed. It is further classified into hemicolectomy, partial colectomy, or segmental resection.
