This week...

With a few unfortunate exceptions, the bushfires have brought out the best in most people, here and abroad. Offers of on-theground assistance and financial donations continue to pour in from around the world. In our own community, mercifully free of bushfires so far, yet choking on the incessant smoke, heaps of fundraising efforts have sprung up – from concerts and trivia nights to kids’ lemonade stands and rattling the tin at community events. In the days following the devastating fires that hit communities along the NSW South Coast and Eastern Gippsland in Victoria, a local Facebook group sprang up to offer emergency accommodation or rest stops for weary travellers fleeing the fire grounds. Government funding and respected charitable organisations such as the Red Cross have mobilised to provide support in the recovery phase. Everyone impacted by the fires can take heart in knowing they are not alone. It’s a generous response that exemplifies the best of Australia. Reasons to be grateful this past week include the seemingly tireless efforts of firefighters, first responders and support crews, an interesting, albeit hazy, opening night at the Openair Cinemas screening of Ford v Ferrari at the Patrick White Lawns, restorative yoga classes indoors, an indulgent spot of omphaloskepsis (navelgazing), alfresco dinner with friends on a relatively clear and mild night, mobile phones and Vietnamese noodle salad. - Julie Samaras
