PICK OF THE WEEK Beneath Hill 60

Hugo

Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, (2010) This exceptional drama is based on the true story of a group of miners sent to the Western Front who helped change the course of the war. Forced to leave his sweetheart and travel to the trenches in Europe, engineer Oliver Woodward (Brendan Cowell, pictured) finds himself commanding tunnellers, including Gyton Grantley and Anthony Hayes. The gung-ho group work on a secret network of tunnels, packing it with enough explosives to kill thousands of German troops.

Friday

Friday, 9GO!, 7.30pm, PG (2011) Not known for his familyfriendly fare, Martin Scorcese nonetheless proves his versatility as a director in this magical adaptation of the Brian Selznick tale The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Asa Butterfield (pictured) takes on the title role of a young boy who lives in the clock tower of an old train station in Paris, who spends his free time trying to repair an old automaton. Scorcese weaves the history of cinema into the story as Hugo meets Isabelle (Chloe Grace Moretz) and her grandfather (Ben Kingsley).

Captain America: Civil War

Saturday, PRIME7, 9pm, M (2016) Movie superheroes aren’t in short supply, but this third instalment in the Captain America series blitzes its competition. After a botched operation in Nigeria, the Avengers are pressured to allow government accountability, dividing the team. While Captain America (Chris Evans, pictured) believes superheroes should remain without interference, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) disagrees, escalating into a feud that pits hero against hero.
