SUPPORTING LOCAL INNOVATION
CBR PARTNERS WITH CANBERRA INNOVATION NETWORK
Canberra Airport is proud to be partnering with Canberra Innovation Network, as gold partners. A non-profit organization founded by national and regional higher education and research institutions, Canberra Innovation Network supports the growth and development of innovative local businesses by providing a range of programs that include mentoring, networking, skills development, access to coworking, incubation, acceleration, collaborations, research linkages and funding.
The partnership will create new networking and promotional opportunities for local start-ups, entrepreneurs, innovators and small businesses, helping to attract more investment and talent to the region and accelerating growth of regional businesses. Speaking of the partnership, Canberra Airport Managing Director, Stephen Byron, said the company was “committed to supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in the Canberra region”.
This is the first time the Green Building Council of Australia has awarded the prestigious Design & As Built rating to a building in the ACT.
The six-star Green rating is testament to the myriad of sustainable features integrated throughout its design and construction, including a fully electric building, a thoughtfully designed façade with sun blades, landscaping incorporating native species, roof-mounted solar arrays and a meticulously planned end-of-trip facility complete with cycle racks and shower/change room amenities. Additionally, our ongoing recycling arrangements and composting programs have contributed substantially to achieving this world-leading environmental performance.
The partnership will provide start-ups with an opportunity to test their products, to try and sell their solutions, to gain feedback which will enhance their business growth and improve their capability moving forward. “Partnering with the Canberra Airport really extends the Canberra innovation ecosystem,” Canberra Innovation Network CEO, Petr Adamek said.

SNOW FOUNDATION
DEADLY HEART TREK UPDATE
THE SNOW FOUNDATION CONTINUES ITS FOCUS ON RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE.
Since 2011, The Snow Foundation has been working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other significant stakeholders and partners on crusted scabies and rheumatic heart disease (RHD), to help bring an end to these preventable diseases that can lead to death. The Deadly Heart Trek, now a registered charity managed by The Snow Foundation, is an opportunity to listen, learn, educate, diagnose and treat communities affected by RHD.
To date, the Trek team of paediatric cardiologists, Aboriginal guides, sonographers, health workers, Aboriginal leaders and team members from The Snow Foundation and Heart Foundation, has been invited to visit 36 First Nations communities across Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Central Australia.
Late last year, the team visited communities across QLD where approximately 1500 children and families were educated on RHD and 978 children’s hearts were screened, leading to the diagnosis and treatment of 29 new RHD cases. In March, the Trek team was invited to APY Lands and Central Australia, visiting 22 communities.
INVESTING IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH
THE SNOW MEDICAL INVESTMENT INTO MEDICAL RESEARCH HAS TOPPED $100 MILLION.
The Snow Medical investment into medical research has topped $100 million since 2020 with the announcement of an additional $16 million commitment to two new Snow Fellows, their teams, and their outstanding emerging biomedical research.
Our two new Fellows each receive a million dollars a year, for eight years, creating an unprecedented level of long-term support. The Fellowships have been awarded to Dr Michelle Boyle at the Burnet Institute and Associate Professor Lining (Arnold) Ju at the University of Sydney.
CONTACT DETAILS
In total, across the three Treks completed, over 5,000 children and families have been educated on healthy hearts and healthy skin, and heart screenings have been given to over 2,000 children. The majority had healthy hearts, but new RHD cases were also diagnosed and treated. Feedback from communities during the visits, and in post-visit surveys, has been very positive - reporting great benefits to their communities, and a keen interest in seeing the trek return to their community.
“Michelle and Arnold are amongst the best biomedical researchers globally. They join nine other truly outstanding Snow Fellows across Australia. Our Snow Fellows have the passion, dedication, and vision to make a real difference in the world, and we are excited to see how they will push the boundaries for science,” Snow Medical Chair, Tom Snow said.
“Without investing in the people who will drive innovation and take risks, we’re missing the point. By supporting Australia’s brightest minds to lead the way, they’ll find solutions that will make a real difference in people’s lives.” Terry Snow said.
