Please arrive on time for school and help your child develop good habits of punctuality. It is important that learning is not interrupted by children arriving late at the start of the day. Children can sometimes be quite distressed if they are late or rushed. Children who arrive after the gate has closed must register as late, at the front office: you must wait with your child until a convenient moment when they can be taken to their classroom. Parents should be aware that continued late arrival may be referred to the Attendance and Welfare Service at Tower Hamlets. The Attendance Policy can be found on our website.

Parents are expected to collect children at the designated leaving time at the end of the school day or after attending an extended day activity. If they are unable to do so, parents are required to make their own collection arrangements. Staff cannot be available to supervise children at this time and parents must understand that it is not acceptable to be late to pick up their child.

If you need to confirm a change of pick-up arrangement (anyone other than the usual carer), please contact the Class Teacher and the school office by email or phone with plenty of notice.

Parents of children in Years 5 and 6 may apply to the school for permission for their child to walk home alone.

The request should be made by e-mail to the school office and it should be clear whether this is a one-off or regular permission. Permission is not automatic and will be based on how safe we believe this is.

Wrap Around Care There is a local wrap around care facility local to the College; Parkview Play Care. LINK: Parkview. Please note Canary Wharf College is not responsible for the level of provision provided by wrap around care providers.

Extended Day Activities These run after school (see times above) for children to extend and enhance their learning in a wide range of activities. Childcare Vouchers are accepted for payment if a scheme is provided by your employer. You must collect your child promptly at the end of the session. Late pick-up may well result in your child being excluded from the rest of the sessions that term and the following one.

Payment Methods We do not accept cash or cheques as payment for trips or Extended Day Activities.

All trips and activities, including Extended Day Activities should be paid for via your School Gateway account, our online payment system.

We accept Childcare Vouchers from all providers, please contact accounts@canarywharfcollege.co.uk to obtain provider numbers for your particular scheme.

Uniform Children have to wear school uniform at all times while at school. The school reserves the right to exclude a child from a particular activity if they are not wearing the correct school uniform. Please ensure that all items of the uniform are clearly labelled with your child’s name. In bad weather conditions children can come to school in boots, but they must bring their shoes to change into once they are in the classroom. For further details please see our Uniform Policy on our website. Regular used-uniform sales are held at coffee mornings, these are advertised in the newsletter.

Worship Assemblies and reflection are held daily. Messages are based on general, moral, ethical and spiritual themes or British values in line with our ethos although we may include messages from a range of faiths and beliefs.

Absences Sickness You must complete the online absence form on the first day of sickness. This form can be found on the school website (Glenworth  Parents  Forms  Absence form). Please use the notes section to inform us of the nature of the sickness and whether your child has contracted an infectious illness, e.g. mumps, chicken pox or head lice, so that we can inform the other parents of children in their class. If your child has vomited overnight or has diarrhoea/temperature, please do not bring them in to school. There should be a clear 48 hours since the last incident of vomiting or diarrhoea. In some cases this may mean staying away for two days until the all clear.

Time is of the essence and this address is monitored when the school is closed.

Medical Appointments Please use the same online form to inform us of any medical appointments your child attends which means they are absent from school. You can make it clear in the notes the absence is for a medical appointment rather than a full day if necessary.

Exceptional Circumstances For any other absence during term time, parents should seek permission in writing (using the same online form) in advance. You should include full details so that the Principal can respond accordingly.

If these procedures are not followed and we do not receive the absence form, the absence is classed as an ‘unauthorised absence’ which is deemed as an act of truancy by the authorities.

Persistent absence is a problem and if a child’s absence falls below 90% we may refer to the Attendance and Welfare Service at Tower Hamlets.

Birthdays Unless the whole class is being invited to a party, please do not circulate invitations in school.

Birthday cake is permitted, but please limit this to your child’s class only. These should be individual cupcakes/donuts/biscuits, rather than a large cake that needs cutting and distributing.

As there are children with allergies and special dietary requirements, please let the class teacher know if cake is going to be brought into school. Please provide a full list of ingredients if homemade. Party bags and sweets are not acceptable.

Communication We pride ourselves in a high level of parent communication.  Emergency Contact Numbers If a child becomes unwell during the day, a parent (or contact person) will be telephoned. Please ensure the school is always kept informed of changes to personal details, e.g. new mobile telephone numbers. Contact details must include at least three people and their telephone numbers, who are willing to look after your child at short notice; at least one of these must be local enough to arrive at school quickly. It is essential that we are informed if parents are away from home or if there are other temporary or permanent changes to living arrangements.

 Calendar Dates Please check the weekly newsletter and website for event information.  School Gate Various members of staff are available at the school gate to deal with simple queries when the children come into school. More detailed queries should be addressed by e-mail.  School Gateway/Comms Canary Wharf College uses SchoolComms, an online email programme, to send emails to parents. Details on how to sign up and download the app are in your Welcome Pack. All letters and notifications will be sent via SchoolComms. You will find it useful to download the SchoolComms app to your smartphone for instant messages and notifications from school.  Communication from the College The school Newsletter is distributed every Friday and can be accessed on the school’s website, www.canarywharfcollege.co.uk. Any other school information is usually sent out on a Friday, so school bags and email should be checked over the weekend. Parents who wish to meet with the Class Teacher or Principal, either before or after school, should make arrangements directly through the school office.

Owing to the current situation, we are currently discouraging all but essential face-to-face meetings.  Learning at home/ Reading Record Book All children receive homework. Most children will bring home books to read during the week. Homework and reading books will be sent home in your child’s book bag. Reading records are for you to fill in at home once your child has read their book. As children progress through the school additional learning at home is encouraged through online Literacy, Maths and other projects.  Christmas Cards A post box is put out a few days before the end of the Autumn Term for the children to post their Christmas cards to their school friends and members of staff. The older children sort and deliver the Christmas cards to each class.

Early Years Foundation Stage (For Reception children aged Four only) The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework is the legal framework which sets out welfare and learning requirements that everyone registered to look after children must follow in Reception.

Key Stage One & Key Stage Two (Years 1 through to 6) Learning is based on the National Curriculum. Termly plans are sent home to parents.

Emergencies In the event of an emergency it is important that the school has up-to-date telephone contact numbers and the name of the child’s GP. If you move house, change your GP or contact details, please inform the school; adequate notice should be given so that amendments/additions can be processed and circulated as soon as practicable. The school acts in loco parentis. During school hours the number to contact us in an emergency is 020 7517 3210.

Fire Drills Fire practices are carried out on a regular basis. If you are bringing your child into school during an evacuation, please keep them under your supervision, move away from the school as quickly and safely as possible, and do not remain parked where a fire engine will need access (anywhere on the school frontage). Return your child to school when the school gives its permission to do so.

Friends of Canary Wharf College Canary Wharf College welcomes the support given by the Friends of Canary Wharf College. This organisation is a Parents’ Association, working closely with the College.

The primary purpose of the ‘Friends’ is to support the Principal and staff in giving the children the best allround education possible. It creates opportunities for all those involved in Canary Wharf College (children, parents, extended family, staff, governors and community) to meet and enjoy themselves in a variety of social contexts. The Friends will act as a parent network, fund-raiser and event-organiser.

Holidays These should only be taken during the designated school holiday periods. It is important that children are not taken out of school during term time, thus interrupting school work. The holidays and half term breaks add up to approximately 16 weeks over the year. Term dates may be found on the Canary Wharf College website www.canarywharfcollege.co.uk Independence Please make sure your child is as independent as possible. Teach them to use the toilet, flush and then wash their hands as a priority. They need to change for PE twice a week so please encourage them to get themselves dressed and undressed each day/night, please also teach them to use any zips/buttons that they might have on their coats. Infant children should not have lace-up shoes. In order for the children to work and learn effectively they need to go to bed at a reasonable time. They will get very tired and you should try to limit after school activities in the early days until they get used to their new pace of life!

Local College Council The LCC forms a layer of accountability below that of the Trustees within each of the schools. Representatives from the staff, the parents, the Friends and the local community meet once a term to discuss issues, successes and any other matters of importance. The Principal attends these meetings and it is an important formal channel where concerns can be raised. The parent representatives can be contacted at LCC-parentGlenworth@Canarywharfcollege.co.uk.

Lost Property All items of clothing should be clearly named (including underwear). Unnamed property is an inconvenience to the smooth running of the school.

If lost property remains unclaimed, it will be given to the Friends of Canary Wharf College to sell or it will be disposed of at the end of each term.

It is expected that any school books, which are damaged or lost, are replaced at the parent/carer’s expense.

Lunch & Snack Please see the Canary Wharf College Food Policy which was written by parents. You can find this policy on our website www.canarywharfcollege.co.uk.

Please provide your child with a mid-morning snack every day. This should be placed in a container in your child’s rucksack.

You have the choice of the following options for lunch: A:

Provide a packed lunch in line with the Food Policy.

B:

Sign up for a free school meal, which consists of a sandwich/food pot (eg pasta or rice) and one piece of fruit/dessert made fresh each morning in CWC Crossharbour (our Secondary School) kitchen. You can add to this by packing additional items in the snack pack.

If you choose to sign up for a free school meal, you will be sent a booking form every term to order in advance.

Medical information  Allergies Details of any allergies or medical conditions should be entered on the Child Information Profile form; please keep the school updated should your child's medical condition change in any way. Severe allergy sufferers must keep an epi-pen in school. Qualified first aid staff are trained in their use. Administration of medicines will be recorded.  Asthma Asthmatic children must bring an inhaler into school, which will be kept in their classroom at all times.

All accidents and medical incidents are recorded.  Head Lice In case of a live infestation being discovered by the school the parent is asked to collect their child for immediate treatment. Head lice should be treated at home with medication. Should a parent discover head lice, please could they inform the school so that we can notify, anonymously, the other parents in the year group. Parents are advised that regular combing of hair after washing with a special nit comb is effective as a preventative measure.  Infectious Conditions The school should be informed of all illnesses and the child should be kept at home until they are no longer contagious.  Immunisations The school expects that parents have complied with UK medical recommendations. Medicines No medicines should be brought into school (except for asthma pumps and epi-pens). Parents should make arrangements with their doctor to prescribe medicines that can be given before and after school. Where this is absolutely unavoidable, parents may come into school to administer the medicine themselves. Any child well enough to be in school is expected to fully take part in the school’s curriculum, including going out to play and joining in PE lessons (which may include swimming), unless they have a doctor's note indicating otherwise.

Parents are responsible for all medication being kept up to date.

Mobile phones / electronic devices: Mobile phones or electronic devices for children are strictly forbidden in school. Children in Years 5 & 6 are allowed to bring a phone if they are travelling to or from school alone. The phone should be handed in to the office on arrival.

Outings/Trips The children visit a variety of places of interest, often linked to their school topics. These trips also increase your child’s confidence and independence. Each academic year you will be asked for a voluntary parent contribution towards the cost of these valuable trips. Parents will be informed about such visits by letter, which will give specific details regarding transport, cost and any clothing requirements. The member of staff organising the outing will have visited the site and completed a risk assessment prior to the trip to ensure the enjoyment and safety of the children. Residential Trips take place throughout the academic year culminating in a brilliant transition week away for the Year 6 students.

Pupil Premium If you are in receipt of certain benefits you may be eligible for Pupil Premium.

You may meet the criteria but have not thought of applying. Pupil Premium entitles your child(ren) to contributions towards trips and activities, free school milk and funding for the school to support learning.

Children in receipt of Pupil Premium are treated no differently in school, this is purely an administrative process. Receiving Pupil Premium does not affect any other benefits you are claiming.

Parents’ Meetings and Reports A Meet the Teacher general meeting is arranged early in the Autumn Term. Parents can learn about the year’s curriculum and the class weekly routine during this meeting. Parents’ Evenings are held later in the Autumn Term and again in the Spring Term to discuss your child’s progress – these are either face-to-face or via a virtual platform. There is a final report sent at the end of the school year.

Parking Parking is not permitted on or outside the school frontage for safety reasons.

We recommend that you use public transport or walk your child to school. Bike/scooter storage is available for your children’s own transport.

If you have to bring a car, please respect and consider our neighbours when parking. If children are escorted into school, cars should be parked well away from the school, avoiding blocking private driveways. Parents are encouraged to move off as soon as possible. It is essential that an amiable relationship is maintained with our neighbours for the good of the school.

Photographs Individual photographs are taken in the Autumn Term, each year. Class photographs are also taken each year, in the Summer Term. Photographs of the children are regularly taken during the year for inclusion in our newsletter or on our website. You have the option to opt out of allowing your child to be in any photographs.

Complaints Canary Wharf College prides itself on the quality of the learning and pastoral care provided for your children.

However, if parents do have a complaint they should firstly contact the Class Teacher. In most cases, the matter will be resolved straight away but, if not, it may be necessary for them to contact the Principal for a more formal resolution. The complaints procedure policy is available on the school website.

Pets/Animals Pets/animals are not permitted on the premises or in the playground, unless for educational purposes, in which case permission must be sought in writing from the Principal.

Sport Canary Wharf College is enthusiastic about Physical Education and Sport. During the year children will participate in for example, football, athletics, tennis, hockey, big ball skills, dance and gymnastics. All children have over two hours of sport a week which takes place in the hall or playground, external basketball courts or in the park next to the school. In addition to the curriculum we offer more sports in the Extended Day Activities programme.

Toys Toys should only be brought to school when relevant to a project. Toys can become lost or broken if the class teacher is unaware of their presence.
