News In Brief Worten opens new store

A NEW Worten store - the third in Tenerife opened this week in La Orotava’s El Trompo Comercial Multicentre. It covers 1,000 sqm and has taken on a team of 23 workers. This brings the total number of stores to 43 and 1,600 employees across Spain and the islands.

Immigrants’ boat tragedy

THE African press reports that at least one person has died and many are missing after a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized. The increase of violent clashes in the Sahel region of Africa has fuelled extra s of inhabitants desperate to cross the strait from Morocco to Spain. Their aim is usually to gain access to Europe, but many die along the way each year. Lifeguards have picked up 157 people from various vessels, and police have arrested a further 19 people who have landed on the Canary Islands.

Belgian tour reps’ trip

AROUND 120 representatives from travel agencies run by Jetair, the Belgian tour operator, have joined 10 journalists on a familiarisation visit of Tenerife. Tenerife Tourism chief Miguel Angel Santos said: “It is a great opportunity to promote the attractions of the Island for Jetair.” The company represents 68% of the holiday packages sold in Belgium, and 80% of those are flight only. From January to July this year, about 80,000 Belgian tourists visited Tenerife.

Sun cream shocker!

GLASWEGIAN mum Marie Goldie, 37, on holiday in Tenerife with her partner and two teenage children, was taken to hospital days after she started using Piz Buin 1 Day Long sun crème. It contains the preservative ethylisothiazolinone, or MI, which can cause rashes, lumps, blisters, itchy eyes and facial swelling. Johnson & Johnson, which makes the cream, removed the chemical from the best-selling product rapidly, but will not withdraw the product, yet! It insists: “It provides safe and effective sun protection. It contains only permitted ingredients at levels well within EU standards set by regulators.” Yet the company says it is updating the product for 2014 - without M1.

Jobs and people - that’s the focus of new Tenerife Cabildo President, Carlos Alonso who presented his priorities this week supported by incoming VicePresident, Aurelio Abreu. Commitment to employment and attention to people are the priority as a new era dawns in the Tenerife Cabildo. At the press conference he highlighted the immediate implementation of the Action Plan for Employment, with a budget of two million euros that will allow SMEs to hire more than a thousand people in a year. Carlos Alonso said: “The Cabildo will become the engine of job creation in contact with

citizens in all areas”. In terms of economic prospects he stressed that they must obey the “effort” made ​​ by the institution this year to reduce debt. Alonso insisted attention to people as another of his priorities ensuring the maintenance and good service in the centres of Cabildo. In this regard he announced that next year will be crucial in health infrastructure. Aurelio Abreu, responsible for Welfare, Health and Dependency, said there will be a focus on “related services to disability, gender violence and children.” As for hospitals in the north and south, he said that in early 2014 they will start the emergency department and a 50-bed hospital for the chronically ill in the north of the island. Regarding the work of

the South Hospital, apparently it is once again scheduled to begin later this month. “Another of the priorities of this new stage is to support entrepreneurship to support activities being conducted by the City Council through the different areas and it is also an excellent tool for promoting new business opportunities in a crisis situation that exists today, “said Alonso. Operation Bull Dog N a ti o n a l Police are asking the public for help in relation to an arrest that took place back in July as part of Operation Bull Dog.

A man from El Fraile, in the municipality of Arona, identified by the initials JMGH was arrested for allegedly molesting at least five

children and taking advantage of his position as a martial arts teacher. The alleged crime came to light following a search of his house on suspicion of possessing and distributing child pornography, crimes of which he is also accused. The suspect, now in prison, has a 20 year history of working in jobs where the common denominator has been the regular contact with minors in the south of

Tenerife, e.g. as a driver of school buses, martial arts instructor and owner of a gym. Investigators have so far found evidence that five children between the ages of 5 and 9 years have been victims of sexual abuse. The accused focused on children from problem families, promising rewards in exchange for sexual favours Neighbours and friends described him

as a person with very few social relationships, leading a “sullen, solitary and austere life,” focusing on his work and martial arts. The National Police has requested the assistance of the public to provide any information that may lead to the identification of further potential victims.
