Sun, sea, sand, sangria; tourists in the Canaries carrying on as normal!

Continued from Front We are in the throes of the winter high season, and the Carnival is coming to an end in Santa Cruz, to move to the tourist areas of the island, regardless of the “global health crisis”, because of the coronavirus spread. In all the islands, the virus has left one hotel in isolation in the south of Tenerife, through six positive cases among Italians and one British tourist, who has since

tested negative, twice, and is soon to be discharged. However, at the time of going to print, the total affected in Tenerife is back up to seven because a man, just returned from a trip to Italy, has tested positive and is isolated at his La Laguna home, although, he is, reportedly, in good health. On a tour of Costa Adeje, along the “golden mile” of Tenerife tourism, holidaymakers stroll along happily, enjoying the sun, the sea and outdoor water sports, and

Wingate’s treat for hotel’s tourists, held in quarantine

WITH help from Helen and Mary, from the British Consulate, Wingate School’s Margaret Green delivered three boxes of books, kindly donated by the Chafiras Bookshop, and three boxes of games (playing cards, chess sets, dominoes, etc, as well as jigsaws and some toys for children). These were all donated on behalf of the school, to the quarantined tourists in the

Costa Adeje Hotel. But, said Margaret: “I think it might have been easier to break into Fort Knox!” She added: “I left a little note on each box, saying how sorry we were that they had not been able to enjoy their holiday on our lovely island. “But we all hoped that this little contribution would help to pass the time, and relieve their boredom.”

the picture differs little from that of previous seasons. Bar and restaurant owners on the Paseo del Duque, next to the beach of the same name, and the pathway to the most exclusive hotel complexes on the island, acknowledge that in the first days of the health alert, there was less activity than usual in the area. But the vibe is already recovering. “People love to go out, have a drink and enjoy themselves, especially the British,” it is said. Hotels’ association Ashotel admits that there have been “significant” holiday cancellations in the past week. And, though it is customary in cases that affect health like this, it is a massive kneejerk reaction, because some of the bookings are for a year in advance. It also says it is awaiting the first official figures, but the association believes the situation will be resolved quickly because the Canarian health system has worked correctly, reacting to protocol. Marc and Chantal, a Belgian

couple who returned to their home country on Friday after two months in Tenerife, said their stay on the island had been “perfect”. They had no worries about the coronavirus, and are looking forward to returning next year, saying: “In our opinion, the national press is making the problem bigger than it is.” Caroline, a 58-year-old English woman who is a regular visitor to Tenerife, affirms that her visit has been “good and enjoyable, because everything is in order”, as does partner Richard, who points out that they are aware of the coronavirus cases, but are here to enjoy the sunshine. He adds: “The weather is so different here, because in England it just rains, rains, and rains!” The charming fishing village of La Caleta, close to the luxury hotels and the good seafood in the area, along with the calm and transparent waters, continues to attract a good number of tourists, who enjoy eating al

fresco on the terraces. “In the first few days, there was a small downturn,” says a waiter from one of the restaurants on the walkway. “That was also down to the calima sandstorm, which strongly affected this area of the island. But customers keep coming, sitting, eating and drinking, or just reading newspapers.” A Newcastle couple highlighted that Tenerife was their “favourite island”. They come here twice a year and haven’t seen any health problems. “We really enjoy the days outdoors,” they said, and they’re already planning their next visit to the archipelago. Adeje Council has praised the work of everyone involved in the management of the coronavirus cases, particularly at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace Hotel. A spokesperson says the Council will remain positive and work hard to strengthen the area as a top tourist destination. After all, Tenerife has already had to overcome the bankruptcy of tour operator Thomas Cook, Brexit … and now this. Viva las Islas Canarias!

For once, our bad news was reported accurately

By Clio O’Flynn THE news of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak at Costa Adeje Palace Hotel sparked, not too surprisingly, something of media frenzy in the first 48 hours. There is a small pool of journalists based here in Tenerife, and most of us were inundated with calls from our contacts abroad, radio, television and print media, hungry for news of this latest appearance of what may be the scourge of the year, or even the decade. Unfortunately, it’s all too common that this island, or these islands, are of interest to the international news outlets, only when it’s bad news. It reflects the centuries-old saying, “no news is good news”, so, as a locally-based journalist, doing up to 10 radio and TV interviews daily in the first 36 hours of the story, I felt torn because I love this island. But the story had to be told. What was worse, a lot worse, was how much of the press, primarily back in the UK, began covering the story without checking the facts with those on the ground here: the hotel, the health authorities, and the journalists based here, who were in touch with those authorities. Of course, the stories of those in the hotel, those worried about

their own health and that of their families, needed to be heard, and they were worried. Consuls and embassies were rushing to contact people, but, for instance, with over 200 British guests, it was never going to be possible to talk to everyone individually. Crucially, and I am a journalist who has worked in national radio as a producer and editor, it was the responsibility of the editors and producers of papers and programmes, to make sure that if they were talking to frightened guests, they also sought the views and updated information from the authorities. There were many hundreds of people working behind the scenes to make the lives of guests as comfortable and safe as possible… volunteer interpreters, local health staff and hotel staff who worked extra shifts, plus a huge etc. They haven’t been really acknowledged, and so for what it’s worth, “Thank You!” However, and it really is positive to be able to report, that those news outlets who arrived within 24 hours of the story breaking, have to be praised for their dedication to the truth, and their refusal to run with rumours. ITN, the BBC, Sky News, as well as TV Canarias and TV España, all had TV crews in place very quickly, and one of their first moves was either to look for local, reliable, English-speaking journalists with official contacts, to work with them, or make their own contact with the local, island and regional health and government authorities.

I worked side by side with these crews for five days; long hours waiting for information, for a change in the story, with many of them having to report “live” into hourly bulletins, and they were very, very careful that they didn’t feed the rumour flames. The press officer for the regional health department quickly set up lines of contact for local and visiting press, and continues to be extremely available to answer all questions, and provide the answers. Very quickly, the press were asked to act responsibly, and for the most part they did. The “holiday from hell” stories were

soon overtaken by fact-led reports, so much so that by the end of the first week, the press office actually thanked those journalists who were determined to report the facts only. Here in Tenerife, and the rest of the Canary Islands, we need tourism because it’s our bread and butter. Even if you are not directly paid by, or reliant upon, the comings and goings of millions of international guests, the services you use, the restaurants, and shops, the theme parks you can visit, the availability of daily flights to and from your home country…

all that is here, and funded by tourism. If that is affected badly, that damage filters down to all of us, which is why responsible reporting is hugely important right now. Maybe, we all need to think a bit more, too, about how we share stories from our lovely island, because the power of social media grows daily. The next time you want to retweet or repost a story that, in your heart and soul, you know is untrue and purely sensationalist, perhaps you’ll take time to pause, think, and wonder if you really need to share!

Assisted bathing platform adds safety to local beach LOS Cristianos beach is having an assisted swimming platform installed, and Arona Town Hall has already signed the contract for the Prevention, Rescue and Assistance Service on the municipality’s coast.

It will, says the Town Council, make this area “the safest in the Canary Islands”. This service is one of the strengths of the 2020 Arona budgets. approved last week, and it involves improvements in prevention, protection and safety on all the municipality’s beaches. One of the most outstanding improvements will be the adapted bathing platform at Los Cristianos beach, which means that Arona will have two certified beaches of quality environment, as well as universal accessibility for the provision of public services, since Las Vistas Beach has this distinction

already. The latter is already recognised as “the most important beach in Europe” for people with mobility problems, to which Arona can now add a second, the

Los Cristianos beach. Another notable improvement is Playa de Troya, which will have surveillance, security and a rescue service throughout the year.

Dead man was given a brutal beating by duo GUARDIA Civil officers are investigating the death of a 61-year-old man, who was born in Tenerife but grew up in France. His body was found last Monday, inside derelict premises in Ten Bel, Costa del Silencio. Officers then began an investigation, amid evidence of suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. He was reported missing by his family last Friday, after the alarm was raised because they had not heard from him for more than a week. And an autopsy was carried out on Tuesday to confirm the cause. Sadly, his body was found in an abandoned old bar, which had been vandalised and torched on several occasions. Guardia agents have confirmed that they are looking into whether his death was caused by violent causes, pending the results of the autopsy. It was thought that he had probably been living on the premises for a little while, after moving from El Fraile, where he lived in his tent behind the petrol station. But that does not paint a fair picture of Angelo Michel YCC, better known locally as Miguel, who had lived a colourful life. He was born in La Esperanza, in the north of Tenerife, and moved to France with his family when he was just seven.

Eventually, as he grew older, he enlisted in the Foreign Legion, where he became a sergeant, and was later promoted to lieutenant. He returned to Tenerife in 1986, and continuing his life. He was married four times, producing seven children and two grandchildren, with another one on the way. Miguel admitted living quietly in a tent, and cleaning the beach every day, because, he said: “People all over the world throw cigarette butts on the floor and empty their ashtrays. “But it is always clean because the Canary Islands are wonderful, and I do what I do best to keep it that way.” Miguel had moved to the abandoned park in Andrómeda, Costa del Silencio, by Ten Bel’s derelict tennis courts, where his lifeless body was found, beaten brutally, on Sunday night. A witness is believed to have seen two men leave the Ten Bel area, and a search for them is underway. “These two subjects tried to enter the place Miguel lived, which he opposed,” he said. “So they gave him a terrible beating, which ended fatally.”

Palm Mar’s La Arenita beach will also have these services, but during the summer season only. The rest of the Arona beaches, which already have

these services, will also see an increase in the number of lifeguards, from 11 to 17, throughout the year. In the summer season, there will be a total of 23, instead of the current 12, while Los Cristianos beach will also have a shaded area of 120sq/m. In addition, a beacon system will be implemented on the Las Galletas beach to delimit the bathing area from the boats, to improve the safety of bathers. The new service will provide all beaches with watchtowers, Las Vistas with a new assistance post, and total refurbishment of the current post on Los Cristianos beach, in addition to an inflatable boat to cover the entire beach area of the municipality. This new contract will enable Arona to strengthen the safety of its coastline, and it will be one of the safest and most popular tourist destinations in the Islands. Above all, it demonstrates the Council’s focus on accessibility and security.

Man dies after falling 10m from scaffolding ONE man crashed to his death from scaffolding in Santa Cruz on Tuesday, and another man was seriously injured.

The victims were working for a company on a factory in the El Mayorazgo industrial estate, and both fell from a

serious height, estimated to be around 10 metres, as they worked alongside two other men. Local Police officers, who received the report, as well as Labour Inspection and National Police, have moved into the area. But the company’s management has decided to remain silent while investigations are continuing.

‘Only Yes means Yes’ stresses the new rape law

Bikers hurt after crashing into car ALL non-consensual sex will be treated as rape under the new “Only yes means yes” law, which has been approved by the Spanish Government, following a huge outcry over the Wolf Pack case.

TWO men were seriously injured when their motorbike crashed into a car during the early hours of Sunday, in Santa Cruz. The driver was also hurt. An emergency call was made to the Canarian Emergency Services, and an ambulance was dispatched, immediately, to the area. Once there, the medical

team assessed the situation before tending to the injured parties. The car driver was stabilised at the scene, while the bikers were taken to Candelaria Hospital. One, aged 40, suffered severe bruising, both internally and externally. The other person, a year older, had several broken bones. Santa Cruz Local Police remained at the scene, taking charge of the corresponding proceed-ings.

Firemen douse blaze cars FIRE-FIGHTERS, called to a blaze at Guimar on Wednesday night by the Emergency Services, discovered that three cars had been torched.

The vehicles had been parked up on the main, Calle Jose Marti road, but the fire-fighters cleared the surrounding area and extinguished the flames. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

I n the 2016 Wolf Pack court hearing, five men were cleared of rape because there was no evidence of violence. But mass protests against that conviction led to last year’s appeal, in which the Supreme Court ruled that the men had committed rape. Spain’s left-wing Government, acting on a pre-election promise to strengthen laws in defence of women’s rights, has now approved the bill. The draft law, which faces months of debate in parliament, seeks to establish specialised courts for dealing with sexual offences, and round-the-clock recovery centres for victims. It would increase jail penalties for work-related, sexual harassment, to up to two years. and would also make cat-calling a criminal offence. Combating gender violence has been high on Spain’s political agenda, since its

women’s rights movement was galvanised by the trial of the Wolf Pack, in which five men, who coined that phrase about themselves, were jailed for committing sexual abuse after gangraping a young woman at the Pamplona bull-running festival. They were cleared of more serious charges as there was no evidence of violence being used. But because of the way the law works, currently, if women are too scared to fight back, or are physically incapable, sex attacks will not be considered rape. The new law will abolish that distinction, so that rape will, instead, be decided by the question of consent. Mass protests against that initial conviction, which attracted international attention in the wake of the global #MeToo movement, led to a 2019 appeal, in which the Supreme Court ruled that the men had committed rape. Equality Minister Irene Montero told a news briefing: “Spain will be a safer country for women with the approval of this law. Women’s rights and sexual freedoms will never again be stranded down a blind alley.” Spain’s Socialist-led, coalition Government, announced the bill’s approval in the run-up to this Sunday’s International Women’s Day, and also, the

weekend’s rallies in Spain to mark it. Maria Solanas, director at the Elcano Royal Institute think-tank, said the proposed legislation would make Spain the first country to implement, in a single bill, all the recommendations of the 2014 Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women. According to Amnesty International, only nine of 31 European countries have laws that define rape, based on the absence of consent, instead defining it by other measures, such as whether violence, or the threat of violence, was used, as is still the case in Spain. The bill proposes to merge the crimes of sexual abuse and sexual assault into the same type of crime qualified as rape. Aggravating factors, such as physical violence, or the use of drugs or alcohol to incapacitate the victim, would carry heavier sentences. Such cases would be heard by special judges in courts dedicated to sexual crimes, as is already done with crimes relating to gender violence. The gender violence law was approved in 2004 by Spain’s previous Socialist government, and the World Economic Forum ranks the country eighth globally, in terms of gender parity.

AND these aren’t the only problems surrounding Ryanair, because Spain’s consumer authorities are looking into Ryanair’s claim of being “the lowest-emission airline in Europe”, amid concerns that this may be influencing planetconscious passengers in their choice of travel. Last month, according to British broadsheet The Guardian, the UK had pulled the plug on the advertising claim, dubbing it “greenwashing”. Now, the Spanish federation FACUA-Consumers in Action, along with the Consumer Affairs Minister, led by United Left leader Alberto Garzón, is also looking into the issue. Airlines conscious of their carbon footprint, and attempting to reduce it, are to be encouraged. But the low-cost, Irish carrier may be forced to change its wording, if it turns out that it cannot substantiate its claims to be the “greenest on the continent”. A monthly CO2 report is provided on Ryanair’s corporate website, and the headline states that it was the first EU airline to do this. It says that its carbon dioxide emissions, per passenger per

7 CW

Irish company boastful of its lowest-emission flights

kilometre, are the lowest in the EU airline industry, based on Ryanair’s claim of having “one of the youngest fleets”, at an “average of six years”, and the “highest passenger load factor” at 96%. The report reads: “Our CO2 per passenger per kilometre has been cut from 82g to 67g (-18%) over the last decade. This is substantially lower than Ryanair’s EU competitors.” The company aims to cut its CO2 output to under 60g per

passenger per kilometre, within the next 10 years. In the last nine months, according to Ryanair’s monthly CO2 reports, emissions have actually risen slightly, from 66g per passenger per kilometre in May and June of 2019, to 67g from July to November 2019 inclusive, and now 69g in December 2019 and this January. But FACUA argues that the metrics supplied are over one year old, from January 2019. These state a total number of

kilometres flown of 13,475 billion, total passengers 10.8 million, total CO2 emissions at 935 kilo-tonnes, and 69g of CO2 per passenger per kilometre. FACUA has started its own research, beginning with requesting CO2 emissions data from the Spanish Air Security Agency (AESA), for each airline operating in the EU. The organisation says Ryanair’s data do, indeed, show that its emissions were lower than the other airlines it mentions on its site, indicating that it is certainly making sterling efforts and heading in the right direction, in this sense. But the airlines it compared itself with “are a very limited number”. They include easyJet, AF-KLM, Lufthansa, and the AngloSpanish group IAG, which owns British Airways and Iberia. And FACUA says data for these and other airlines from 2019 are omitted, meaning “the claims may not be based upon reality”. Also, according to The Guardian, an EU report named Ryanair as one of “Europe’s top10 carbon-emitters” at the beginning of 2019. Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority said one of the CO2

charts Ryanair used to substantiate its claims was dated 2011, which was “of little value”, and that “some well-known airlines did not appear on the chart, so it was not clear whether they had been measured”. Seating density, or number of seats per plane, is also “significant information”’ when calculating emissions, said the ASA. Ryanair started reporting on its emissions after being named “the new coal”, at the beginning of 2019, by the European Federation for Transport and the Environment, when its 2018 figures showed its CO2 output had risen by 6.9% in a year and 49% in the previous five. The carrier’s renewed efforts to slash its carbon footprint came in response to finding out that it was the only firm in the top 10 highest-emitters in Europe, that was not a coal company. All this conflicting data shows Ryanair could either be the EU’s greenest, or the EU’s most-polluting, airline, and is not helpful to travellers, whose choice of long-distance transport is, at least, partly influenced by the impact of this on the planet. FACUA’s research will be eagerly awaited by frequent fliers.

A GERMAN swimmer, aged 40, was in a critical condition, despite being rescued by lifeguards, after getting into trouble at Fañabe beach on Wednesday afternoon. The Canarian emergency services were notified about the drowning man, just after 3.20pm, and a medicallyequipped ambulance was dispatched to the scene, along with a life-support ambulance, and the National Police. Lifeguards, who rescued the

man, were already administering CPR in an effort to get him breathing again. The medical team took over and continued with CPR, until they were able to find a faint pulse. Once the man was stabilised, he was taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment and observation. The National Police issued a report about the events, and also stated that, since the start of the year, no fewer than 12 people had died, accidentally, around the Canarian coastline. The report added that 75% of the deaths caused by drowning were men.

Do you know if you need, or how, to exchange your driving licence? Liberty Seguros answers your questions:

THERE are many questions being bounced around about the consequences of Brexit, and what effect it will have for those in Spain, and other parts of Europe. And, of course, nothing is certain yet. One of the most recurring doubts is about the validity of driving licences. In this regard, you must know that all driving licences, issued in any member state of the European Union and the European Economic Area, are valid for driving in Spain, while they are in force, and have not been removed for any reason. While you have your permit in force, the exchange for an equivalent Spanish driver’s licence is completely voluntary. However, don’t forget that, once you obtain your legal residence in Spain, your licence will be subject to the Spanish regulations regarding its period of validity, control of your psychophysical aptitudes, and assignment of a points credit. In those cases, where the

driving licence is not subject to a specific period of validity, this will have to be renewed after two years, since establishing your legal residence in Spain. However, from January 1st 2021, the general regulations on non-EU countries will apply to the permits issued by the British authorities, and you will be allowed to drive in Spain for only six months, from your entry in Spain, or from the date of obtaining your legal residence.

Therefore, if your driving licence was issued in the United Kingdom, and you have been residing in Spain for a period longer than six months, this will no longer be valid for driving in Spain, from that date. To continue driving on Spanish roads without problems, you must exchange your permit for a Spanish licence, before the said date. To do so, you must arrange an appointment with your nearest office through

https://sedeapl.dgt.gob.es You might still use your Spanish licence in the UK for short visits, or exchange it for a UK licence, without taking a test, if you return to live in the UK. What do you need to exchange your licence? · Official application form, available at the Jefaturas de Tráfico (Provincial Traffic Departments), and on the DGT’s website (www.dgt.es) · Proof of identity and residence: National identity card or passport; your residence card, national identity card or passport, and your certificate of registration in the Central Register for Foreign Nationals, if you are an EU national; residence card for non-EU nationals · Foreign driving licence to be exchanged in force · Up-to-date 32 mm x 26 mm colour photo · Number or proof of payment of having paid the fee II.3: 28.30€ There are three methods of payment: online www.dgt. es, by bank card at Traffic Departments, by direct debit from a bank account, or in cash at financial institutions (model form 791 available at

Oops…100 dope boxes sent to wrong address!

SPANISH police have busted a ring of dope smugglers, after 100 boxes of growth hormone were delivered to the wrong address. The transport-company blunder led to seven arrests and 1.65m doses of doping substances, worth €1m, being seized by Catalan lawenforcement agency Mossos d’Esquadra. Police say the group acted as wholesalers, importing the drugs from Bulgaria, Romania and Greece, for sale in gyms through a network of “retailing” collaborators. They offered quantity-based discounts for orders worth between €7,000 and €20,000. They dispatched the drugs from a warehouse to which only the two heads of the gang had access. They were delivered to the homes of the collaborators, who then sold them on.

Following the delivery of drugs to the wrong address last July, the Mossos launched an investigation. This culminated in four raids in the Sant Adria del Besos Catalan city of Sabadell, Terrassa, where the main warehouse was located. They discovered €19,000 in cash at the home of the 35-year-old alleged gang leader, with other searches uncovering proof of drugshipment records, plus 40,000 boxes of 140 types of pills and injectable substances. These included 1.3 million units of anabolic and other injectable products, as well as 31,000 doses of growth hormone. Police said that evidence was found of doping substances also being counterfeited. The seven detainees, five Spaniards, one Pakistani and a Moroccan, have been released by the courts, while charges of drug-trafficking and counterfeiting are investigated.

Runaway drug-trafficker is nabbed, after six years! THE suspected ringleader of a cocainetrafficking gang, who expected to bank more than £1m monthly, has been arrested in Marbella after more than six years on the run.

Dominic McInally, 29, from Formby, Merseyside, was nabbed last Friday when National Police officers raided the Casa Masa strip club, near Marbella, in the early hours of last Saturday. McInally was nailed by Operation Captura, which targets fugitives, suspected of hiding out among the UK national community in parts of Spain. Operation Captura, run jointly by the NCA, Crimestoppers UK and Spanish authorities, has now resulted in 85 suspects being apprehended since 2006, and just 10 are still at large. Following his arrest, McInally was taken to Madrid, where extradition proceedings will begin. He has been wanted by Merseyside Police since January 2014, when officers

intercepted a car in Crosby and recovered 6kg of cocaine, in a hidden compartment. Five gang members, said to have been led by McInally, were later sentenced to a total of 48 years in prison. Hugh Elliott, British Ambassador to Spain, said: “The arrest of Dominic McInally would not have been possible without the excellent co-operation between the British and Spanish police forces. “It is yet another success under Operation Captura, which has resulted in dozens of fugitives being brought to account; many of them after years on the run in Spain.” Andy Cooke-Welling, Head of the NCA’s International Crime Bureau, said: “This arrest is the result of years of investigation by the NCA, Merseyside Police and our Spanish partners.” He also warned: “It should be clear, to those attempting to

flee from UK justice, that they can never rest easy. “The NCA works, globally, to fight serious and organised crime, and to protect the UK public from the violence and exploitation, resulting from the class A drug trade.” Mick Duthie, Crimestoppers charity Director of Operations, said: “I commend the work of our partners, the National Crime Agency and the Spanish Police, for this latest arrest. “We remind people to visit the Crimestoppers website, view those fugitives still on the run, and tell our charity where they are. We promise that you will remain 100% anonymous. Always! We have kept this promise for over 32 years.” Anyone with information on fugitives in Spain can contact the Crimestoppers charity, 100% anonymously, on 0800 555 111, or through the secure online form.

THE statutes of limitations of many debts, accrued before 7th October 2015, will take place tomorrow (7th March). Thus, it is extremely important that any creditors, who have not yet claimed a debt (whose limitation before October 2015 was 15 years), must take the necessary measures to avoid this limit, prior to October 2020. The article 1964.2 of the Spanish Civil Code, which

www.canarianweekly.com 6th March - 12th March 2020

Debts’ law now cut by a huge 10 years! sets the statute of limitations for personal actions, was modified by Law 42/2015, of 5th October. This Law, entered on 7th October 2015, reduced the general period established for personal actions from 15 to five years. It means that prior to October 2015, the deadline for a 2007 debt would be 2022. But because of the law change, this deadline is now in 2020. To avoid prejudice to all those who had pending action before the law came into force, the law itself has provided a transitional system. This regime establishes these guidelines: 1. Legal relations, before 7th October, 2000, would be

prescribed upon the entry into force of a new Law of 2015. 2. Those placed between 7th October 2000 and 7th October 2005. The period of 15 years provided in the original wording of the article applies to them. 3. Legal actions between 7th October 2005 and 7th October 2015 stand until 7th October, 2020. 4. For those arising after 7th October, 2015, the new fiveyear term applies. Consequently, the debts and obligations, from 7th October 2005 up to 7th October 2015, are now due on 7th October 2020. And those debts taken on from 7th October 2015, should

be repaid after five years. There are many legal relationships affected by this change, for example: *Legal obligations whose effectiveness do not have a special term of extinction *Obligations arising from a sale contract *Action to cancel a contract for breach of it *Actions derived from the failure to complete an obligation *Action of an owner against the community of owners for the compensation of damages, caused by common elements *Action of the lessor of a property for the review of rent To avoid losing the chance to present a claim, the

creditor should proceed with enacting a lawsuit to avoid the deadline, or lose the claim. But if the person drops the initial deadline, and seeks a new one, he/she has another five years in which to sue the debtor. This action can be performed by telegram, burofax or any other means, which certify the notification or reception of the debt. Mariano E. nationality. Existing residents If you already hold residence papers, you are considered lawfully settled, but will be expected to apply for the new “Foreigners Identify Card” (TIE) when it becomes available. Although the Withdrawal Agreement allows an extra six months to convert paperwork (up to 30 June 2021), there is little value in risking disruption, by waiting until then. What changes for nonresidents in 2021? From 1 January 2021, UK nationals without settled status lose automatic freedom of

movement, and will be treated as “third country” (non-EU) citizens. This means you would only legally be able to stay in Spain for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. UK citizens will, of course, still be able to acquire Spanish residency, but under unknown rules and requirements. Current rules for non-EU/ EEA citizens require each individual to demonstrate a minimum income, to prove sufficient economic means. As you cannot apply “incountry”, you would have to leave Spain, to apply through the relevant UK consulate. So if you are still thinking about moving permanently to Spain, it will never be easier than today. Wherever possible, relocate and register before the end of 2020, to be protected by the Withdrawal Agreement. For the best results, take personalised advice to establish what you can do to secure your position in Spain, and ensure your tax, estate planning, pensions and investments are optimised for life in the Canary Isles, before and after Brexit. It’s time to lock in residency in Spain

By Paul Montague Partner, blevins Franks

UK nationals living in the Canary Isles, or owning property here, can feel reassured that little will change, while the Brexit transition period is underway. But, with no certainty beyond 2020, time is running out to secure your position. What is at stake? If you are lawfully settled in Spain, before 31 December 2020, you can acquire guaranteed citizens’ rights, under the UK/EU Withdrawal Agreement. This provides the right to remain, indefinitely, and access the same social security, education and employment opportunities as today, for as long as you remain resident in Spain. You would also be entitled to existing Spanish healthcare benefits, and annual cost-ofliving increases to the UK State Pension. However, anyone arriving, from 2021, may have restricted movement in Spain, and be subject to a new residence regime, to access similar rights. As such, there is everything to gain by taking steps now to become Spanish

resident, and come under the protection of the Withdrawal Agreement. How to become lawfully resident in Spain If you are already in Spain, but have not yet secured settled status, register with the local authorities as soon as possible, to get your residence recognised. All EU/EEA nationals staying in Spain more than three months should apply for the temporary (green) residence certificate. If you spend more than 183 days here, you are also obliged to register with your local municipal registry. Of course, if you meet the

criteria to be tax resident, you also should have formally registered with the Spanish tax office, and submit annual income tax and wealth tax (if applicable) returns, as well as Modelo 720 (reporting of assets abroad). Temporary residents need to re-apply each year (and continue meeting the conditions of residence). After five years, you can qualify for permanent residency. Spanish citizenship is available after ten years. However, under current rules, you would have to renounce your UK nationality, because Spain does not allow dual

Joanna Lumley’s Hidden Caribbean: Havana to Haiti Friday 6th March, BBC1, 22.35

Greg James’ Sport Relief Heroes In the run-up to Sport Relief, Greg James meets up with his heroes of the charity event - including David Walliams, Eddie Izzard, Davina McCall, John Bishop and Zoe Ball. A defining feature of Sport Relief is the willingness of celebrities to undertake gruelling challenges in order to inspire the public to donate and get involved with the cause. Greg looks back with those who have put themselves to the test and beyond for the charity, finding out what motivated them. After all, marathon man Eddie Izzard drove himself to breaking point in his quest to run 27 marathons in 27 days as a tribute to Nelson Mandela, and David Walliams swam the channel and 140 miles along the River Thames. Few will forget the iconic scenes of John Bishop climbing the steps at Trafalgar Square after a long journey by bike, boat and feet from Paris - or of a weepy Davina McCall finishing her seven-day, 500-mile triathlon from Edinburgh to London, while Zoe Ball cycled from her birthplace Blackpool to her home in Brighton to raise awareness for men’s mental health. All were spurred on to raise money for Sport Relief and those in need.

Tuesday 10th March, ITV1, 21.00 “I’m going on an adventure through two of the most intoxicating countries in the world. This unique journey will glimpse the hidden side of these fascinating places – why don’t you tag along?” Joanna Lumley Joanna Lumley travels across two of the most enigmatic countries in the Caribbean – Cuba and Haiti – to explore, uncover and share the hidden gems that these countries have to offer in this brand-new ITV series. Across two episodes, Joanna will kick off her adventure in the back of a classic car in Havana, outlining her 1500-mile Caribbean adventure. The twists and turns of history have seen these two Caribbean neighbours be colonised, populated by slaves, blighted by natural disaster and suffering sanctions and international isolation. Both countries are undoubtedly poor in monetary terms, but are abundantly rich in other ways, with cities full of colourful streets bursting with the rhythm of life, which then give way to unspoiled coastlines, pristine beaches, majestic mountains and lush forests. There really is much more to both Haiti and Cuba than the headlines suggest - so much of it is thrillingly under-explored and this series is the perfect chance for Joanna to uncover and share the joy these countries have to offer.

The Station: Trouble On The Tracks

In the first programme, extensive flooding means engineers battle the elements, and a military-type operation shifts into gear at regional HQ as beleaguered station staff deal with stranded passengers filling up the concourse demanding answers. Engineer Ryan, part of the ‘orange army’, turns up at a flood to find water cascading down an embankment on to flooded tracks from nearby fields. He says: “This is shocking. They said it was coming though, didn’t they. You can never come to work and be like, ‘Alright we’re doing this.’ Because there is always that emergency there, ready to happen. Can be a flood one minute, a tree the next, trespassing, suicide. Anything.” Operations manager Rob, explaining why his teams regularly face situations like flooding, where trains have to be stopped, says: “Because we’re running on, well a large amount of it is Victorian infrastructure... Sometimes we are fighting a slightly losing battle in trying to keep all of our infrastructure up to date and in good order.” In Birmingham, the acclaimed graffiti artist Banksy presents rail engineers with a uniquely challenging gift spray-painted on to one of their walls - all done under his usual veil of secrecy. Local Jeweller Martin says: “I drove down the street, parked on the end, noticed there was a white tent over there, with two men in high vis. Just thought it was workmen, doing a bit of upkeep, or building work, but er, it was Banksy!” Meanwhile, cheeky train manager Adam loves a good prank but is less than pleased when he discovers a passenger without a ticket. He says: “It’s a tough one really, I kind of gave him the respect to take him on his word, so you are saying you’re not well? Okay, then well you can’t travel ‘cos you’re gonna be sick? Let’s get you off.” At Birmingham New Street, customer service assistant JJ has to cope with the main stairs to one of the platforms closing after a pregnant woman falls down the steps - seemingly sending her into labour. She says: “She’s quite heavily pregnant and I think, my heart goes out to her because obviously her concerns are going to be the welfare of her baby at the moment. And to be honest that’s becoming my thoughts as well now, I’m quite concerned about how she is.”

Six Nations Live ITV1, 15.50

Six Nations Live – England v Wales Live (KO 4.45pm) Eddie Jones and his England team will have a spring in their step after a morale-boosting win over Ireland kept them in the hunt for the Six Nations title. The return to fitness of the destructive centre Manu Tuilagi was a key factor, as tries from George Ford, Elliot Daly and Luke Cowan Dickie helped England to a comfortable 24-12 victory. By contrast, the defending champions, Wales, are stuttering after successive defeats to Ireland and France, and new coach Wayne Pivac will be eager to get his side back on track at Twickenham. Welsh fans will need no reminding of their last win in South West London - scrum half Gareth Davies was the hero as his try sealed a dramatic 28-25 victory at the 2015 World Cup. Mark Pougatch is joined in the studio by Jonny Wilkinson, Sir Clive Woodward, Gareth Thomas and Mike Phillips, with pitchside inserts from Martin Bayfield and commentary from Nick Mulllins, Shane Williams and Lawrence Dallaglio.

Ian and Henry serve up a comforting dish of pastaball marinara - their take on meatballs in tomato sauce. Next up, is baked banana French toast, topped off with a juicy, warm, berry compote, a healthier way to start your day. Chef Meriel Armitage stops by and cooks her signature BBQ glazed jackfruit ribs, while the boys demonstrate their answer to a Chinese takeaway with crispy chilli tofu and special fried rice.

Scotland v France Can Scotland continue their fine recent home record against the French? They have won the last three encounters between the sides at Murrayfield in all competitions. The Scots have scored at least 29 points in their past two Six Nations home fixtures against Les Bleus and also beat them 17-14 in a warm-up game ahead of last year’s World Cup. However, the French have made an encouraging start to life under new head coach Fabien Galthie and a trip to Murrayfield should prove another useful marker to the progress made since he took charge. John Inverdale hosts the coverage with expert analysis from Andy Nichol, John Barclay, Thomas Castaignede and Paul O’Connell.

Child Of Our Time: Turning 20 BBC2, 21.00

In 1999, the groundbreaking BBC series Child Of Our Time began filming a group of babies, from the moment they were born, to explore what would shape their lives in the new millennium. Twenty years on, these children are fully grown and can reflect, in their own words, on growing up during a time of extraordinary social change. Drawing on thousands of hours of archive footage, this Horizon special will focus on three of the children, exploring their childhood as the first generation of 21st century Britain. Eve, Jamie and Rhianna share their feelings on starting school, finding friends and their turbulent teenage years. Alongside the fun of childhood, all have faced challenges. They can now reflect on how rebellion, family tension, and bereavement have played a part in making them the adults they are today. Throughout this special, a number of other children from Child Of Our Time share their own reflections and experiences on some of the issues that have touched their generation, including mental health, sexual identity and the pressure to achieve.

THERE are a few tickets left for the St Patrick’s Gala Dinner in Golf Costa Adeje next Saturday (14th March). The venue has become something of a green-andgold standard for this excellent event, given the top-class catering and superb wines, which form part of the dinner. And your host for the evening is the Honorary Irish Consul, Álvaro de la Bárcena Argany, who is also a deputy minister in the regional government now. Tickets are €45 and some of that money, as well as funds raised by a raffle during the dinner, will go the Asociacion San Juan, an Adeje-based day centre for children and adults with special needs. There is no question that this is an evening of great fun, great food and great craic! And, of course, you don’t have to be Irish to be part of the Gala event: it’s an open Failte and Slainte for all who would like to join us. Hope to see you there!

Studio4Decor in Los Abrigos is expanding

Baby giraffe born into an endangered species

MANY people have walked into the Studio4Decor showroom and thought “Wow! I would love my home to look like this!”, and Michael has now decided to expand his business, to include much larger premises, just across the road. The new additional space will specialise in interior furniture, and the existing premises will house a fabulous range of terrace furniture, for which you can have cushions made, in the fabric of your choice. Michael is the only Englishtrained upholsterer in Tenerife, and has been in the softfurnishings business for more than 20 years. He reports that his move to Los Abrigos, where access and parking is excellent, has been his best one to date! His lovely shop on the main street displays some beautiful furniture, soft furnishings, lights, sofas, ornaments, pictures, mirrors and fabrics, catering for all budgets. Whatever you would like to do with the “look” of your home, Studio4Decor really is the place to head for. Even a simple thing like a stunning new picture, or perhaps a new light or mirror, can transform a room. Or you might like to have made-to-measure curtains. Michael has literally hundreds

of samples, including some new black-out fabrics in stunning colours. You could add a matching throw for your bed, or a custom-built headboard, or even some gorgeous scatter cushions. The choice is endless. There are many sofas and sofabeds on display, a number of which are hand-made in the work shop adjoining the original premises. Again, you won’t find things to be out of your price range. For example, you could have a sofa built to your own specifications, from around €950. The huge bonus is that it can be made to fit the space you want it to! You can even have chairs and footstools to match. There is also a wonderful variety of lovely dining-room sets, soon to be on display in the new shop. There’s absolutely no obligation

involved in popping in for a chat or giving Michael a ring, and, of course, contact from estate agents and property management companies is always very welcome. The new premises will be opening shortly, but clients can have a sneak preview because they are still operating from the original shop. So watch this space for the official opening date! Studio4Decor is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am1.30pm, and 3-6pm, thereafter by appointment, including Saturdays. As you drive into Los Abrigos, you will find Studio4Decor a few yards down from the start on the right, as you enter the village, with plenty of parking nearby. Mother and baby are both doing well, but the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) say these Rothschild giraffes are now, genuinely, an endangered species, and certain strains of them even more so. “This makes the existence of the species in safari and zoo parks absolutely essential,” adds the IUCN. And the global zoo network is attempting to breed at least 500 to reintroduce them to the wild, after they have been raised, specifically, to enable them to cope. At the moment, no plans are afoot to release giraffes into their native Africa, until guarantees are in place that they will be safe. But it is hoped that this will start, once systems are in place. Most safari reserves of the type visited by tourists on animal-spotting trips, such as Kruger Park in South Africa and Kenya’s Masai Mara, in Kenya, are patrolled by anti-poaching officers, who will shoot to

kill if they see a human unlawfully killing, or trying to kill, animals which roam wild there. But the latest new-born Rothschild, it is feared, will become extinct unless efforts are stepped up to save the species. He has not yet been named, despite being born on 16th February, but zoo staff did not release the news until they were sure he was in good health and would survive. But several visitors actually witnessed Nuru giving birth. She was given the right environment to ensure humans did not disturb her, and she would not have been be aware of their presence, as she went into labour after 450 days’ gestation. Now, she and her baby are in a separate wing, to avoid being hassled by the other giraffes, and they can be looked after round the clock. Barcelona Zoo is now working with authorities in Niger for the conservation of the Peralta giraffe, one of the most iconic species in the Sahel region of the Sahara Desert, and which is in “serious danger” because of climate change. The aim is to aid their survival and encourage their breeding in their natural habitat, rather than in captivity.

AS more and more European countries dispense with notes and coins, and debit and creditcard payments become accepted more widely, one wonders if physical currency could become extinct within a generation.

Spain and the Eurozone are still cashing in

After all, Denmark has floated the idea of bringing a halt to minting cash. Bank transfers in the UK are usually free of charge and instant. It means that if you owe someone a tenner, you can just deposit it in his/ her account, or use PayPal, which is extremely safe and comfortable. It just needs both parties to have an email address. It’s perfectly possible to have a full-length holiday in Iceland and never see the currency. You can even pay for a chocolate bar with your card. Add to this the increasing number of banks offering mobilephone payment Apps, in which you simply place your handset above the card machine, or even your SmartWatch, and it does seem that the need for money you can hold in your hand is lessening by the year. In fact, it could go the same way as cheque books have in the last 20 years: becoming, if not obsolete, certainly very rare and a lot of hassle. In Spain, the main barrier to shops and bars accepting card payments was because their banks charged so much in commission that it was not worth their while, unless the

transaction was fairly hefty. Retailers and restaurateurs would lose some of the money they charged for their goods or services. But, increasingly, banks are making it easier and cheaper for their commercial clients to take card payments. And even getting paid in cash still costs. You have to pay security companies to transport the money. Employees or owners carrying it in person to the bank put their safety at risk, and could easily lose a whole day’s takings in a mugging, or if they lose their handbags. Hold-ups at petrol stations and shops can mean having to hand over all you earn that day for the sake of your safety. Staff members run the risk of being accused of theft if the till contents do not add up.

And if they are robbed on the way to the bank, the terror and guilt felt if employees lose the company money bag while transporting the cash is extremely stressful. Lessunderstanding bosses might even make them pay it back out of their wages. Yet cash can still have the uses that debit cards and the like do not provide. If you’re slipping a note into someone’s birthday card, it looks more “present-like” than scrawling on it that you’ve put the same sum into their current account. Giving money to homeless people on the streets isn’t easy without cash. And most don’t accept credit cards. Charity boxes at tills fill up from loose change, habitually, especially “brown coins”, while few

customers would think to add an extra sum to a card transaction if asked. Tipping restaurant staff is easier in cash, because, generally, it actually ends up in the waiter’s pocket. Also, fruit machines and lottery shops accepting cash merely guards against those at risk of becoming gambling addicts, from spending every cent and losing it all. In more modern nations, even the extremely elderly know how to use debit cards and to check their bank statements. Yet the relatively-new concept of plastic payment is too “technical” for some of the oldest residents to understand. They simply feel more comfortable counting out notes and coins. In fact, recent reports have shown that high-

street bank closures in villages leaves the elderly feeling helpless. Many do not understand cashpoint machines, preferring instead to visit the bank in person to ask for their money. Also, many argue that cash helps prevent one from overspending. It’s easy enough to hand over a card at the till, but if you’re 20 pence short for those musthave designer shoes you probably couldn’t afford anyway, you have no choice but to leave empty-handed. Yet others say cash has a habit of “disappearing” in their purses, and card payments prevent them spending money like water. In the last decade, Spain has gone from over 50% of shops, nearly 100% of bars and a small number of restaurants, accepting cash only.

6th March - 12th March 2020 And those which do take cards are setting a minimum payment sum of between €10 and €30, to almost 100% of shops and restaurants, with a steadily-rising number of bars taking card payments for even small sums. This, in part, is down to European Union directives on card use, and partly down to a law introduced in Spain in the last few years, requiring all establishments to allow card payments for any sum over €30. In all cases, if a shop accepts card payments at any other time of the year, it is also required by law to do so during the sales. They cannot insist on cash only when they slash their prices. But is Spain really becoming a cashless society? It’s not just Spain, either, because the entire Eurozone prefers cash. According to the Central European Bank (BCE), the facilities are mostly there for allowing Spain to ditch the coins and notes. But old habits die hard, and a whopping 87% of people in Spain still use cash for their daily purchases. In fact, in the Eurozone as a whole, 79% of transactions are still made in cash, and 54% of the total sum spent per year is in notes and coins.

Non-EU workers are sold false contracts for €1,700

FALSE employment contracts were sold by a group of Alicante fraudsters, enabling others to claim Spanish residencia and benefits. National Police arrested the gang last Thursday, after they had used two Costa Blanca retailers to provide fake contracts, despite the number of “staff” far exceeding the number needed for such small enterprises. Agents discovered that nearly all the so-called staff had gone on to claim benefits, once residencias had been obtained, although some were not EU citizens. Long-term surveillance was placed

at both premises, verifying that many new-starters didn’t even turn up for their first day of work. The employment contracts dealt with fictitious labour agreements, commanding fees of more than €1,700 in many cases. The gang-leader had a close network of minions, operating in mediation, recruitment and advice on the illegal activities carried out. But the group were already known to police for similar offences. Three of the detainees, aged 4151, from Spain and Pakistan, were sent to the Courts of Instruction of Orihuela and Alicante. The other 18 arrested were released, after making statements at Alicante’s Provincial Police.

We take good care of them

MOSTLY, our dogs arrive at the refuge in terrible conditions, because of human abuse. We spend a lot of time with them and provide veterinary care, as needed, and good food, to ensure the dogs regain full health.

They are fully vaccinated and microchipped. They are free of heartworm and fleas, and, most importantly, sterilised. We also ensure the dogs are re-socialised, and have learnt, again, to trust humans, before they are ready for adoption. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome, towards the vast running costs of the refuge. who was not able to keep her. She was sad to let her go, and we can understand why. Serafina is a young Pointer, and is an extremely sweet and affectionate girl. She has a lot of energy, and loves to play with her kennel friends. She has shared with several other dogs, here at K9, who have all been adopted, but poor Serafina is being overlooked. She can be a little nervous if she doesn’t know you. But give her a chance and some time, and she will be very comfortable around you, and would make an enjoyable loving companion for you and your family.

She has shared with both male and female dogs, and gets on great with both. She loves to run around and play. She was recently sharing with

another young Pointer, who has since been adopted. She was a little but lost without her best friend, because they had formed quite a close bond. We then tried her with another male, Baloo, who was bigger than her, but also friendly. They made a good match. Baloo has since left K9, so, once again, Serafina is left wondering where all her friends have gone. She deserves a new, loving, forever home. She needs to be shown love and affection, and the comfort of a home. She has been at K9 too long now, and she is still so young. Can you help her please? Come up and meet her and take her a walk. She loves going out, and does have a lot of energy, but always puts a smile on your face! You can meet her any day at K9 between 9.30am1.30pm. Please get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas.

Don’t forget to microchip! KittyCatz News

IF you adopt a KittyCatz cat or kitten, the adoption fee not only includes initial vaccines and neutering, but also the cost of a microchip.

As a responsible pet owner, you’ll want to ensure that if your beloved friend were to go missing, he or she will have the best possible chance of being found, so a microchip is essential. Some owners feel that a collar is sufficient, but there are many reasons why they, unless they are the snapapart, safety variety, are not a good idea. Cats can entangle themselves in their own collars, such as getting their front legs caught through them, typically because they has been incorrectly fitted, or have become loose. They can also become caught or trapped on fences, gate posts or branches, which can lead to the cat

being unable to escape, or, potentially, choking. KittyCatz recommend both a safety collar and a microchip, even if your cat will be a house cat. You never know when your cat might slip through an open window or patio doors, and a house cat can find it extremely difficult to find its way home. A microchip is around the size of a grain of rice, and is injected underneath your cat’s skin, between the shoulder blades. It’s not painful, and your cat won’t feel it at all, once it’s in. It lasts for the cat’s lifetime, and, if your pet were to get lost or injured, and taken to a vet or animal charity, he or she would be automatically scanned and identified, allowing access to your contact details. For this reason, ensure your contact and address details are always up to date. If your cat (or dog) does not have a microchip, please make it a priority to get it done. It’s only around €30-40; a small price to pay, and it lasts a lifetime.

Some owners fit their cat with a collar and bell, to reduce their chances of catching birds and wildlife. Did you know that the likelihood of your cat successfully catching a bird is less than 2%, hence the reason why they bring you mice as presents! However, bells, discs and other bits hanging from the collar can be hazardous, because the cat can become entangled on something, and can also get its claws caught in the bell. Can you also imagine how annoying the constant sound of a bell must be for your cat? It can, quite literally, drive them crazy, so it really is not recommended. Fundraising event! Don’t forget our fundraising afternoon and evening on Wednesday 11th March at The Waterfall, Las Adelfas 2, Golf del Sur. The fun starts at 12.30, and you can join us for a complimentary glass of Pimms, and an afternoon of prizes and surprises. Follow our work on Facebook and our website www.kittycatz.net

Detox your body with these foods THE liver is the secondlargest organ in the body. It works hard, all day long, converting your food into nutrients, and helping eliminate toxins from your body.

Unfortunately, a lot of what we eat isn’t doing our liver any favours. All the processed ingredients, fried foods and insane amounts of salt and sugar, along with any other environmental pollutants or stress, really put a strain on this important organ. Luckily, there are plenty of simple and available foods that can give your liver a good cleanse. Leafy green vegetables Kale, spinach, chicory and mustard greens all contain the liver-loving ingredient chlorophyll. These luscious greens can neutralise heavy metals, pesticides and chemicals, to make your liver’s job just a bit easier. Leafy greens can also increase bile in the liver, which helps remove waste.

Not only are they available in abundance, but there are lots of ways you can use them. They are great for salads and smoothies, incorporating into your favourite recipes, or as a juice. Garlic Garlic can help protect the liver from toxic agents, and activates good enzymes in your liver, keeping it healthy and balanced. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Lemons and limes Sour to the taste, but a sweet companion for your liver! They are packed with Vitamin C,

and are powerful antioxidants. Drinking lemon or lime juice helps your body turn toxic materials into substances that can be absorbed by water. Lemons and limes are great to add a simple flavour to your water, but they can also be used in smoothies, juices and desserts. Grapefruit Similar to lemons and limes, grapefruits contain Vitamin C, which is a great liver cleanser. Grapefruit juice can also protect against some types of liver damage, and flush out carcinogens and toxins. Grapefruits are delicious all

on their own as a breakfast or mid-day snack, but this citrus flavour can also be added to smoothies, salads or juices. Turmeric This bright spice is more than just a pretty colour. It’s a great anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It also helps with liver cleansing by strengthening enzymes that aid the flushing out of toxins, and helps to increase bile flow. In powder form, it can be easily added to smoothies, soups and stews, or any other dish! Broccoli and cauliflower Broccoli and cauliflower contain glucosinolate, which helps support enzyme production in the liver. They can also protect the liver from damage, and increase its

detoxifying abilities. They are great roasted or steamed, mixed in any soup or salad, or eaten raw with some humus or other dip. Avocados Avocados have become popular with a huge following, in recent years. They are helpful to the liver by enhancing the antioxidant enzyme system, and can also reduce liver damage. Avocados are great as a toast topper, a creamy texture for smoothies, or an extra surprise in salads and dips. Blueberries Blueberries are an extremely powerful antioxidant, more than most other fruits and vegetables, and are great for adding colour to any smoothie, juice, salad or yogurt.

The PAS System in Spain what it means and entails By Emma

from Motorworld

AS in all countries, in the event of an accident or incident, the primary concern should be of the safety of those concerned. The emergency services have a system called PAS, which is Proteger, Avisar y Socorer. This does not translate literally for us into English, but it means, essentially, Protect, Advise and Assist. These three things are very important to remember. when we are fraught, nervous and frightened. If we try to remember this system by the abbreviations, similar to those used in TV advertisements to drive home information, FAST concerning a stroke, for example, we may find the situation less daunting, and be able to deal with it more calmly. Let’s look at what one should do. PROTECT By remembering this phrase, and following the actions in a methodical manner, you can, potentially, save a life. Firstly, you should think of your OWN safety. If you are going to assist at a scene, make sure you

are wearing your high-visibility jacket, and have parked your car safely. If you are on a very busy road, and cannot park completely out of the way, use your hazard warning lights to alert other road users to a potential hazard ahead. You should never approach a burning vehicle, or go near to an accident involving a vehicle that is carrying hazardous goods ie gas, petrol etc. If it is safe for you to do so, place your own warning triangles at an appropriate distance, again to warn other road users. ADVISE You should advise the emergency services if the

incident is dangerous, or someone is hurt or injured, by calling 112. These operators are fully trained and speak several languages, so do not worry. Remember that if you have a pay-as-you-go phone with no credit, you can still call 112. You will need to provide them with a location, so if you know the street name or number eg TF65 KM3, then provide it. If not, look around and pick out landmarks that may help, such as churches, large restaurants, shops etc. If you have a smart phone, you can use that to pinpoint the location that you find yourself in. It will also help the emergency services if you are

able to advise them how many people are involved, how many are injured, and their state, ie unconscious, bleeding etc. Let them know whether a larger vehicle has been involved and someone is trapped, if there is a potential danger of goods that may have been being carried moving and falling, or even if a vehicle is sitting precariously, eg over a barranco, or something similar. The more information you are able to supply, the better it will be for the emergency services to dispatch the appropriate number and type of vehicle/ services necessary. Always stay on the line until the emergency

services terminate the call, because they may come back to you for more information. ASSIST Always be careful not to add to, or aggravate, any injuries sustained, and, unless you are a medical professional, ie doctor, nurse or paramedic, do not intervene. Do not attempt to remove people from vehicles, and, if a biker is involved, NEVER remove his or her helmet. If they do so, then so be it. NEVER give injured people food, drink or medication, and, wherever possible, do not allow them to move on their own. Try to remain calm, and stay until the emergency services arrive. Only leave when they tell you that it is okay to do so, because, sometimes, you may be able to pass on vital information, which you may have deemed silly or not worthy of stating. All in all, the PAS system is really about common sense, but, in times of trouble, this often deserts even the best of people! The police do not need to be called if there are no injured parties, and the two sides complete and sign an accident claims form at the time, for onward submission to their insurers.

Premier League Tour worth $10m a match! SINCE last week, when I read about the Premier League… no, not football but golf, our world has been abuzz with talk of a tour, to rival that of the PGA’s. A proposed World Tour is nothing new, of course. Greg Norman first suggested such a concept almost 20 years ago. Now, though, it looks as though it might happen, in the form of the Premier Golf League, and, potentially, within two years. I know that questions will be asked, so I’m taking a closer look. What is the Premier Golf League? In short, it’s another professional golf tour, and appears to be a realisation of long-mooted plans for a world tour. What form would it take? It is believed that the tour would comprise an 18-event schedule, starting in 2022 and running from January to September. Each event would be 54 holes, have no cut, be restricted to 48-player fields, and be worth an eye-popping $10m! It has also been proposed, reportedly, that each event has a shotgun start to shorten the tournament day, and it is thought that it would conclude with a season-ending team champion. Team championship? That's correct. It’s thought that the Premier Golf League would contain a Formula One-style complement, in which players would be signed to teams, complete with managers, signings, transfers and so on. Evidently, the Premier Golf League feels the current PGA Tour structure is flawed. Principally, it believes that the game’s top players do not play against each other often enough. It also feels that it can offer an improved televisual display, and can do more to grow the game at all levels. What the players feel Put it this way: none of them is ruling out getting involved. Left-hander Phil Mickelson thinks it’s “intriguing”. Rory McIlroy hopes it can be “the catalyst for something a little bit different”. But he has already said: “The more I’ve thought about it, the more I don’t like it. The one thing, as a professional golfer in my position, that I value is the fact that I have autonomy and freedom over everything I do. “This tournament is a perfect example. Some guys this week made the choice not to come to Mexico. If you play in this other golf league, you’re not going to have that choice. “I read a thing the other day which said that if you

take the money, they can tell you what to do, so if you don’t take the money, they can’t tell you what to do. And I think that’s my thing.” However, he acknowledged a possible scenario that leaves him no choice but to join the PGL. Dustin Johnson says it “sounds interesting”, while World No.1 Brooks Pekoe said: “When things are more finalised, put in stone and I understand it, and I know exactly where things are falling, then I’ll be probably be one of the first to make a choice, or figure out what I’m going to do.” And what about our beloved PGA and its tournaments? Well, apparently, it’s not happy, as you might expect. Its commissioner, Jay Monahan, issued a missive to all member-players this week regarding the proposed new development, the crux of which is believed to be: It’s either them or us. In last week’s edition I mentioned good old EastEnders. Well, here’s what can happen on a golf course. Sid Owen, famous for playing Ricky Butcher in EastEnders, sustained some nasty injuries while playing golf in Thailand with a pal. A golf ball rebounded off a tree and hit him in the face, and Sid required more than 15 hours of reconstructive surgery. He is awaiting the results of a brain scan before being allowed home. “One minute I’m playing a round and the next I’m in total agony and on my way to hospital,” he said. “But actually, I’ve almost been lucky because they told me that if it had hit me two inches higher up, I’d probably be dead from that sort of impact.” Owen, a keen golfer, added: “I was standing about 10ft away when it hit me, hard! And, of course, it hurt like hell, but it was the shock factor, too. “I remember seeing two teeth fly straight out of my mouth, and it turned out to be a fracture in my face, and a broken jaw, along with another tooth embedded in my jaw.” Poor Sid had to have a bone graft, followed by several rounds of dental surgery, because the damage was too extensive to treat all at once. Get well soon, Sid. Finally, I didn’t get to play golf this week because I had a fight with a large plastic table during last Sunday’s high winds. The table won, hitting me in the back, and it took until the following day for the bruises and pain to come out. Even one week on and I’m still not 100%! But here are the results from around the golf societies: The Legends G/S, Texas Scramble Competition, Los Lagos, 27th Feb: Winning team: Darren, George, Steve C, Peter S (3-under-par, 55.2 points). Adeje International (Yellow Shirts), Costa Adeje, 29th Feb: 1st, Alison Knowles (37pts H32); 2nd, Harry Mark (37pts H21); 3rd, Mick Leask (37pts H12). Result decided on Countback. Peanuts G/S, Golf del Sur, 27th Feb: 1st, Echard Weisner; 2nd, Blair Demaine; 3rd, TJ Riordan. Costa Adeje Rabbits, Los Lagos, 27 Feb: 1st, Oliver Foye (46pts H25); 2nd, Gary Anthony (41pts H28); 3rd, Martyn Compton (40pts H18). Los Lagos, 29th Feb: 1st, Phil Thomas (44pts H16); 2nd, Anthony Hide (39pts H 25); 3rd, Pat Shannon (38pts H15). That’s it for this week.

Picasso’s in the picture

IT’S the last of the catch-up weeks, starting with a Division 2 clash between Pas O Nadas and Picasso’s@Palms.

The games were alternating, until Picasso’s went out of turn and took a 3-2 lead. They then pressed home their advantage, taking it to 4-2, and leaving PON needing the rest for a draw. They took the second doubles, but failed in the team game, so it finished 5-3 to Picasso’s. Gaffers#Teamhollywood v Pas O Nadas Int This was a much-talked-about match, with Pas O Nadas Int, who, sportingly, agreed to play this one. And, as you can see from GIO’s Facebook picture, she didn’t appear to mind at all. PON Int took a 3-2 lead, before Gaffers fought back, taking both doubles, and leaving the pressure on the visitors to take the trebles, for a draw. And they did just that! Paul’s 98 & 85 finishes probably helped along the way, although the only 180 on the night went to the Gaffer’s Dan. Palms Sports Bar v Marilyns B A 180 for Chris probably helped the home team secure a 6-2 win, but Lorna still thought it was a “Brill evening”. Ourplace Breakaways v Pink Elephant The home team had the dubious pleasure of welcoming the Pink Elephant, and Fudder’s Breakaways managed to win one game. Unfortunately for them, it was just the one, leaving the Pink Elephant with 7-1 success. Emerald Lounge v Scooters&Chevys B The home team shot into a 3-0 lead rapidly, before Neil stopped the rot for the visitors. But it was shortlived fight-back, and Emerald piled it on, taking the remainder for a 7-1 win. The Club House v Marilyns Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, The Club House took on Marilyns, and here’s Lorna’s opinion: “Brilliant night. Club House 8 Marilyns 0, but what a fantastic bunch of guys to play against. Thank you for a great evening. Well played.” And, just for balance, here’s Mark’s verdict: “Club House 8 Marilyns 0. Well-played guys, some close games Charlie Club House another 180.” One more week to go, and, don’t forget, you can play your catch-up games on any day of the week; maybe a good Sunday afternoon to be had.

CD Tenerife RUBÉN Baraja and his team headed to the Asturias, in north-west Spain last weekend, full of confidence after a great run of form and results. There were no surprises in his line-up, as Joselu wasn’t able to face his old club, because of a contract clause when he moved to Tenerife. That saw Javi Muñoz coming in to the midfield, and Nahuel moving up front. The rest of the starting XI was the same team who beat Elche at the Heliodoro the week before. It was obvious from the start that both teams were aiming for a win, because they were on the attack immediately. The first chance fell to the home side as Tejera launched a long ball up front, and striker Ortuna headed just over the bar. Tenerife responded quickly and had a clear-cut chance when Nahuel received a deep ball. He cut it back to Dani Gomez, who shot from the edge of the 18-yard box. Oviedo goalkeeper Lunin saved it, but only as far as Shaq Moore, who had a free chance but headed the ball straight into the keeper’s hands. Before Tenerife had too much time to rue a missed chance, the play was brought back for an offside in their

VAR halts a six-game unbeaten run by CDT Real Oviedo 1 CDT Tenerife 0 build-up. For much of the remaining session, Tenerife dominated possession, keeping the home team locked in their own half. Yet they weren’t able to create too many openings. Oviedo’s best chance was from a 33rd-minute free-kick, 25 yards out, taken by midfielder Tejera, who is known for his set-pieces. But on this occasion, he got the ball over the wall but not on target. The most negative thing for Baraja in the first half was the three yellow cards his team picked up: Álex Muñoz for a non-existent elbow in the 25th minute, Moore in the 29th and Sipcic in the 33rd. The biggest positive was the performance of Dani Gomez, Tenerife’s most dangerous player, who created the main headaches for Oviedo’s defence. The visitors started the second half brightly, and there was an immediate chance for Dani Gómez, who hit a powerful shot against the base of the right post. However, he couldn’t go for the rebound because he was ruled offside. In the 58th minute, Aitor Sanz became the

fourth Tenerife player to see yellow, when he was also cautioned by the ref, and it was his mistake that led to a chance for Oviedo. But Luism’s header went just wide of Ortolá’s right post. In the 66th minute, coach Baraja made his first change, replacing Nahuel with Alex Bermejo. Ziganda also made changes for Oviedo, taking off Berjón and Ortuño, for Borja Sánchez and Ibrahima Balde. The move worked perfectly, and the home team became more dangerous in the Tenerife half. Baraja made another substitution in the 78th minute, bringing on Lasure for Javi Muñoz, who made what was

an almost immediate impact with a powerful left-foot shot, saved well by Lunin to keep the score goal-less. As time ticked by, a 0-0 result seemed destined… until the 83rd minute. A looping ball in the Tenerife box broke for Balde, and Tenerife cleared it. But VAR intercepted to review a suspected hand-ball by Luis Pérez. Footage showed the faintest of touches, as the ball brushed his right hand. But the referee, who had seen it on the monitor, had no choice but to award Oviedo a penalty. It was almost five minutes between the game being stopped and Rodri Ríos stepping up to take the spot-kick, which he drilled straight

down the middle, past Ortolá in the 88th minute, to put the home side ahead. The VAR decision, and the penalty, knocked the wind out of Tenerife, and Oviedo were

happy to defend their lead for the rest of normal time, as well as the extra seven minutes added on for stoppages. At the final whistle, you could see the disappointment in the faces of Tenerife’s players and their coach, as the result broke their run of six games without losing, and a great opportunity for them to move up the table. Tenerife are now in 16th position, on 36 points, and can still move up if they bounce back against Ponferradina on Sunday in Santa Cruz. That’s because it’s so close in the middle of the table. But can they? Of course they can!

Happy Days are here for bowling champs!

THE Early Birds Bowling Club have announced their 2020 Club Championship winners, with Tommy Rourke collecting the Gents’ Singles crown, and also the Pairs’ title, along with John Shea. Sheila Ball took the Ladies’ Singles title, while the Triples went to Fred Adlam, John Shea and Lindsay Heinrich.

Meanwhile, at Happy Days, where the club play, members presented their €500 donation cheque to Mrs Ines Grillo (pictured, third from left), representing the AECC Tenerife, Cancer Bus Charity. While the Early Birds are a relatively small club, with around 60 members, they are extremely active, and any publicity they can generate will, hopefully, encourage new members to play bowls with them, and become involved in their social activities.
