CHARITY fundraiser Bernie Bucket, who has raised fortunes in Tenerife alone for Cancer Research UK, has been honoured with a prestigious award in her native Wirral. And Bernie, aka Mrs Bernie Singleton, has
sent a heartfelt “thankyou” to everyone involved in her stirring work, both here and in the UK. Bernie, who collected a whopping 5,763.28 euros during her annual appeal-cum-show at Showtime, Karting Las Americas, last month, was one of five winners at this year’s Wirral Awards. They were presented
by the Mayor, Cllr Gerry Ellis, at Wallasey Town Hall. She was selected for the accolade “for raising awareness of breast cancer and exceptional fund-raising efforts for cancer research”. A delighted Bernie said: “Thank you so much to all the amazing people who have supported my fund-raising. This would not have
been given to me without their much-appreciated help.” The Mayor added: “On behalf of the people of Wirral, I was delighted to thank them for their efforts over many years. “The achievement identifies outstanding achievement from the last 12 months, or distinguished service over a period of 20 years or more.”
Bomberos runners are in step with Help for Heroes A NUMBER of Adeje volunteer fire-fighters (Bomberos) took part in Sunday’s Las Galletas Half-Marathon. The aim each year is to raise as much money for charity as possible and this time, unusually, a British charity, Help for Heroes, was selected. It was chosen in recognition of the outstanding support given by the British community as a whole to these voluntary fire-fighters, who performed heroically themselves during the torrid summer blazes which raged in Tenerife.
Sponsor forms were given out to bars around southern Tenerife and the money came rolling in.
Two former serving Royal Marines, Rick Sweeney and Barry Holroyde, co-ordinated the distribution and collection of sponsorship donations. Later on Sunday, The Palms sports bar held a fund-raising function to add to the sponsorship money. A raffle was held and a number of local acts gave up their time to raise money for this worthy cause. At time of going to press, around 900 euros had been raised, with a
number of sponsorship forms yet to be collected. Special thanks to Mat originally from Dorking in Surrey, now a volunteer Bomberos, for taking part in the run and linking up with H4H to raise much-needed funds for injured service personnel. And good luck to him when he joins the British Army later this year. A word of advice, though: next time you go for a run Mat, take Vaseline!
