Door shuts on Canarian illegals ILLEGAL immigrants arriving in the Canary Islands last year were almost non-existent, compared with the 2009 figures. In fact, the Spanish Interior Ministry revealed this week that the 196 migrants who made it totalled the lowest level since 1997. In 2009, the authorities recorded 2,246 arrivals in the Canaries - regarded for years as a gateway to Europe from Africa - against the astonishing figure of 31,678 in 1996.

Spanish officials believe that thousands of Africans who used to attempt the perilous journey by boat to Spanish soil died of thirst, hunger or exposure every year. The mass arrival of their boats has become a rare sight in recent times because of the Spanish recession and, of more importance, the repatriation agreements Madrid signed with the African countries. They were a major source of migrants, but Spain has also worked with other European nations to boost maritime surveillance.
