note from BRIGITTE HERREMA

Hello Everyone!

I want to take this opportunity to allow for everyone to put a face to my name. My name is Brigitte Herrema and I am the new Marketing and Promotions Manager for the Canadian Speckle Park Association. My background is rather diverse in the livestock industry. My family owns and operates a dairy farm an hour north of Toronto in the town of Uxbridge where at age 11 I decided I wanted to give my shot at showing beef and finished last in the Queen’s Guinea at the Royal. From there my Dad describes my journey as a 4-H project gone wrong where I still to this day run a few purebred Shorthorn cattle. I was actively involved with the Canadian Junior Shorthorn Association from 2009-2016. I can proudly say I met some of my life long friends through the program. My education consists of an Associate Diploma in Agriculture from the former University of Guelph Kemptville Campus where I served as Student Council President my senior year, a BSc. Agriculture with a major in Animal Science from the University of Guelph focusing on genetics as well as a Certificate in Business from the University of Guelph. From 2020- 2022 I lived in Alberta during which I spent time with ShowChampions picturing NWSS, San Antonio Stock Show and Houston Stock Show, worked on a dairy show herd, CattleVids as well as a couple other jobs to gain experience. I have travelled to many of the top dairy shows in North America where I have had the incredible opportunity to picture some of the top show animals in the world and work for show herds travelling to various shows. Currently I help on my parents farm where I aid in the genetic selection of the herd and daily operations of the farm, manage my Shorthorn herd, run my photography business

BJH Photography and handle the position of Marketing and Promotions Manager for the Canadian Speckle Park Association. Jumping into this position in the middle of the busy season has been a whirlwind of an experience! This issue I really wanted to highlight the junior association as they have done so many things over the last little while and have more things coming down the road from the Exchange, donation heifer and future junior national events. Our Idea Exchange I wanted to highlight four individuals who began their show career in the Speckle Park breed and have gone on to do some amazing things and carve their own paths. I believe kids are the future and I hope everyone enjoys seeing what the juniors are up to. My goal with this position is to put the breeders first by creating content and marketing the Speckle Park breed to its fullest potential. I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the way as this has been a massive learning opportunity as well as to the team behind the scenes who have answered all my questions.

If you ever have questions, comments or anything please never hesitate to reach out!

Thank you again for making me feel so welcome in this role! I look forward to meeting breeders at various events throughout Canada and please do not hesitate to contact me at any point in time!

Brigitte ~

Welcome to the 7th Edition of Spotlight on Speckle Park!

As we head into fall harvest and the Fall Female Sales it is encouraging to see that cattle prices remain high.

Speckle Park Calves are being sought after for their feed efficiency and meat quality. Additionally, farm to table suppliers are looking to buy in cattle to keep up with the demand. The consumers love Speckle Park Beef.

In an effort to showcase the value of the Speckle Park cross, The association is planning the SPX Jackpot show to be held at Agribition in 2026. The show is for calendar year calves that are a minimum of 50% Speckle Park.

For More information about the show, or to

become a SPX Qualified Breeder, visit the SPX Show tab on our website.

The National Speckle Park Sale held at Canadian Western Agribition is now being managed by the Association. The selection committee has been hard at work ensuring that the sale maintains integrity and represents the Speckle Park Breed to the best extent. We appreciate your support as we navigate this new venture.

I would like to wish everyone a wonderful harvest season and look forward to catching up with you all at the fall shows and sales.

As always, I am happy to answer any questions, and am always available to hear your thoughts and concerns.

OFFICE MANAGER’S REPORT

CSPA CORNER

We hope this fall issue finds everyone doing well. There never seems to be enough hours in the day at this time of year as the days start to get shorter and Harvest and weaning are well underway for most. We want to recognise those working around the clock to keep up with everything and those being affected by drought conditions and weather challenges across the country.

I want to thank our hosts out in the Maritimes that made for a fun and memorable AGM this past July. Nova Scotia and the Maritimes are truly a remarkable place, and we made the most of all the tours and hospitality offered by everyone that put in time and effort to make the weekend and events on either side of the weekend a trip to remember for those who attended.

We formally announced at our AGM the transition of Staff with Cayley stepping back and Brigitte Herrema gracefully stepping into the role of Marketing and Promotions

Manager. Brigitte has been thrust into learning on the go and has had a lot on her plate since joining. Many of you will have already had contact with Brigitte as she has been putting together the magazine and show sponsorship for this fall. Many may have already have the opportunity to meet her in person at some of the shows out East over the past couple months as well. We welcome Brigitte to the team and look forward to working together on many exciting projects to come.

The SPX show is coming together in planning for our 20th anniversary next year and we will have exciting details to share with everyone at our Agribition banquet in preparation for 2026. We wish everyone the best of luck in the show ring and sale barns this fall and look forward to seeing many of you at industry events this winter.

CSPA WELCOMES NEW DIRECTORS TO THE BOARD

DAN BRUNDIGE BONNYVILLE, AB

Hello, My name is Dan Brundige. Along with my wife Heather and our three children, Lily, Luke and Melody, we operate Wolf Lake Speckle Park in northeastern Alberta, half an hour North of the town of Bonnyville. We have deep roots to the community and live on the homestead my grandfather settled in 1933.

In 2013, after some coaxing from my wife, we made the jump into starting our purebred Speckle Park herd. I think this is probably a similar story to how a lot of people got started in the breed. I was told by an auctioneer once that we’ll always have a demand for Speckle heifers until every farmer’s daughter or granddaughter has at least one. Joking aside we have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the breed these last 12 years. It has given our family opportunities to create friendships and connections with people throughout the country and the world that we never would have had. Our farm is family business and a typical “family holiday” usually contains at least one herd tour or taking cattle to a show somewhere.

We were drawn to the breed for the feed efficiencies, calving vigor and carcass quality that Speckle Park provide. We see the evidence of the breeds merits all the time whether it is our bull customers commenting on how quickly their calves get up and start sucking or the people we sell beef to being amazed at how good it is and wondering what we could possibly be feeding them to get them to taste so good.

While along with almost everyone else in the industry I wish that raising purebred cattle could be my full-time occupation. However, for the past 20 years I have worked in the oil and gas industry where we have been blessed with resources locally that I can still be home every night. I have been in a leadership position of a Foreman role within the company I work at for the past 11 years. This has enabled me to develop my leadership and management skills that I believe could be a benefit as a board member.

While the breed has had its ups and downs in the markets lately, I believe that we have everything we need for a bright future as long we are able to continue to guide it in the right direction. Promoting the merits of the breed within the industry here in Canada and around the world, branding Speckle Park as the superior beef carcass, and looking for ways to steam line our registration process are some the things I would be looking to help contribute to.

Thanks, Dan Brundige

TRAVIS BEISHUIZEN RIPLEY, ONTARIO

Dear Fellow Members of Canadian Speckle Park Association,

I am writing to formally express my interest in serving on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Speckle Park Association. As a dedicated breeder and advocate of Speckle Park cattle, I am passionate about contributing to the continued success, growth, and integrity of this uniquely Canadian breed.

My Self along with Jackie and our Three Children (Kira, Brooke & Jace) Operate Beisview Speckle Park on our 4th Generation Family Farm. With years of experience in both commercial and purebred operations, I have witnessed firsthand the adaptability, efficiency, and market potential of Speckle Park cattle. My goal as a board member is to support initiatives that further validate and enhance the breed’s value in both domestic and international markets. This includes expanding breed awareness, supporting producer education, and fostering collaborative research into performance metrics and genetic advancement.

My outlook for the Speckle Park breed is rooted in sustainable growth, genetic integrity, and commercial relevance. I believe that by maintaining a strong emphasis on carcass quality, maternal traits, and efficient feed conversion, we can continue to position Speckle Park as a leader in the beef industry. Equally, I see an opportunity to expand marketing efforts and increase breed exposure through strategic partnerships, youth engagement, and breed-specific data collection. I am excited about the future of this breed and am eager to contribute to shaping a strong, transparent, and forward-thinking association.

Sincerely,

SPECKLE SPOTS

THANK YOU, ANDCHRIS FARMS

The Canadian Speckle Park Association would like to extend our sincere thanks to Andrew and Christine Metcalfe of Andchris Farms for once again representing the CSPA at the Ontario Cattle Feeders Conference this past winter. We’re grateful for their ongoing efforts and the enthusiasm they bring to promoting the breed.

THOMPSON FARM FARM TO TABLE SUPPER EVENT

From the intention of bringing together as many local producers as possible and highlighting the premium quality of their Speckle Park beef, Wild Prairie Speckle Park and Thompson Farm WP, operated by Erin & Casey Murphy-Thompson, hosted their first farm-to-table supper event on August 17, 2025, as part of Alberta’s Open Farm Days. Planning began months prior, in order to ensure there was enough Prime Rib available to feed a large group. From there the event grew to encompass all local flavors: from the flowers to the beer, the live music to the dessert, there was an extensive list of local vendors providing flavors and entertainment in a celebration of everything locally raised.

With agricultural and ecotourism in mind, this event was aimed at connecting people to their food and increase visibility of Speckle Park beef and the Thompson Farm WP brand. Visitors travelled to Rosalind, located 1.5 hr from Edmonton and Red Deer in central Alberta, from Calgary, Edmonton St. Paul and in between. Casey Murphy-Thompson said, “the feedback we heard was overwhelmingly positive and many people went home with beef because they were sold on it.”

A rustic wagon tour took guests out to see the speckle park herd on pasture. Their operation has a registered Speckle Park herd, raising and selling breeding stock, as well as a commercial herd that is direct marketed as replacement heifers and feeders, with a freezer-beef business to complement both operations.

Back at the event tent, local band, the River Jacks, entertained guests before and after the meal, with giveaway baskets provided by the participating vendors and a handmade quilt provided by Lorraine Thompson.

“As they left, many people were asking us if we were going to do this event again next year and were really excited about it,” said Erin Murphy-Thompson.

Reflecting on the event, Erin and Casey felt this was a complicated yet rewarding undertaking for Thompson Farm WP, with a lot of moving parts to coordinate as they navigated their first public event of this size. They will be exploring ways to improve the experience, elevate the participation of partners and continue to promote their speckle park cattle and beef.

MISS SAGE 2N LONEGEVITY AT ITS FINEST

Miss Sage 2N was born on March 5, 2003. She was bred by William J. Sage of Spruce Grove, Alberta. It must have been a cold March that year, because 2N has hardly enough ears to fit a tag in.

2N is sired by Sage Lad 2L, and out of Codiak Falcon 20F, a 1996 female. Many high quality bulls and females today can be traced back to the original Sage herd. Bill Sage dispersed his herd in the mid 2000’s when he was in his late 90’s.

Miss Sage 2N is still going strong at age 22, and currently resides at Watson Land and Livestock Inc. in Ontario. Peter and Phillip Watson had the pleasure of meeting Bill Sage when he visited Ontario back in 2002. Bill made a point of touring the herd, and offered a warm welcome into the Speckle Park Breed, even at age 92. Bill Sage passed away in May 2009.

Miss Sage 2N has 24 Registered progeny including Calamasue 22Y, who has been a very influential female in her own right. 2N descendants are easily recognised by their massive center body, wide muzzle & chest, good feet and legs, and their ability to raise top end calves with very little input.

Both sons and daughters of 2N have collected show ring accolades, including both Grand Champion Bull & Female at Paris Fair in 2017, as well as Grand Champion Bull at Paris Fair in 2018. More importantly, they are made to last.

Sage last calved at age 19 with a heifer calf sired by Waldner Zeppelin 053H.

Sage is an extreme example of what Speckle Park Producers have been noting all along, Speckle Park Females are built to last.

A [RE]INTRODUCTION

OF CBBC

CBBC could appear to be just another acronym lost in the sea of recognition. I urge you to pause for a moment, the way you might when you take stock of the fall calf crop you’ve just raised. At CBBC we’ve done the same, and we’d like to reintroduce ourselves and share what it is the organization spends it’s invested time on.

The Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) has operated for 30+ years on behalf of the seedstock sector. Our mandate is to support, promote and represent the Canadian beef seedstock sector. CBBC is your voice to other national organizations and government to elevate the issues that matter to you as a member of our sector. Yes, Checkoff dollars exist to help fund organizations like the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) as the national voice of Canada’s 60,000 beef farms and feedlots. However, Canadian Beef Breeds Council is funded through membership dollars and is the partner CCA (and other organizations) engage with when seedstock specific matters arise because our board is comprised of breeders and member organizations who understand the niche we have within the beef industry. I’ll include a list of collaborations below for your review.

Not only does CBBC advance the beef seedstock sector through unified representation, we administer government AgriMarketing funding accessible to our membership to help promote Canadian genetics on a global scale. The opportunity to access this funding also extends to you. As a breeder, sales consultant, industry organization, etc. because our membership is open to those who assist in the fulfilment of the mandate of the Council. There are government enforced parameters set out for eligible expenses through the AgriMarketing program regarding target countries and types of expenses. Details can be outlined further upon inquiry.

I hope I’ve piqued your interest and I’m confident in the mandate behind CBBC, so I invite you to give Shawn Wilson (current Chair) or me (Macy, CEO) a call to discuss more of what we do or to join our membership. Regardless, we continue to work with great people both on our board and within our network on behalf of this sector and I hope to share more of that with you going forward.

Respectfully submitted by,

Macy Liebreich, CEO 604-861-6740

Shawn Wilson, CBBC Chair 639-275-7550

From Our Pastures to Yours Thank You

At River Hill Farm, we’ve always believed that Speckle Park cattle are more than a breed they’re a community. As proud stewards of this remarkable genetic line, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to the breeders, buyers, show teams, and fellow producers who continue to elevate the Speckle Park industry across Canada, the USA and beyond.

The passion, innovation, and commitment to quality have helped shape a resilient and thriving market one we’re honored to be part of for the past 30 years. Whether in the show ring, sale barn, or pasture, your support fueled our drive to breed better, grow stronger, and keep pushing the boundaries of what Speckle Park can be. After years of dedication to building an award winning purebred program, we’re proud to announce the sale of our entire purebred herd to Trestle Creek Cattle Company.

This transition marks a new chapter for these genetics trusted, proven, and now in the hands of a team equally committed to quality and innovation. Trestle Creek will carry forward the legacy with integrity, stewardship, and a shared vision for excellence in the breed.

Thank you for believing in the breed. Thank you for believing in u s.

IDEA EXHANGE

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Opportunities, Skill Development and Support could easily be the three words to define participation in youth programs in agriculture. 4H and Junior Programs within Breed Associations are two of the most established ways for youth to get involved. Within these programs members advance their knowledge and skills in steps that are appropriate for different age groups all while being supported by parents, community members and peers. Interesting opportunities become available and young people get the chance to gain confidence and experience as they take the opportunities most interesting to them. Having fun and being with friends, often making new friends, are of key importance to young people and program organizers know to promote those aspects.

If you’ve been involved in 4H or Junior Programs within Breed Associations, you will know the benefits and enjoyment of the years spent within these programs. You can likely think of key people who supported you, mentored you or gave you a chance when you needed a boost. There will be experiences that come to mind. Some will be about meeting challenges while others will be about celebrating accomplishments. In this edition of Idea Exchange we are featuring four young adults sharing how being involved in youth programs have influenced their lives. They are great role models for CSPA Junior Members now and impressive motivation for CSPA members to support youth programming.

TELL CALVERT DRAYTON VALLEY, AB

My name is Tell Calvert, and I come from a commercial cattle operation just outside of Drayton Valley, Alberta, where I grew up as the middle child of three siblings raising steers and show heifers. After graduating with an Animal Science Technology diploma from Lakeland College, I’ve had the opportunity to show cattle in Mexico, Australia, and all over North America. Alongside farming and raising cattle, I also own and operate my own directional drilling company, installing underground utilities.

How did you first get interested in the breed and what age were you?

I was 11 years old when I bought my very first Speckle Park steer — his name was Ace. Not long after, I purchased my first purebred cow, Battle River Avery. Those two cattle were the start of my journey in the breed, and they sparked a passion that has continued to grow ever since.

What was the most memorable accomplishment you had showing a Speckle Park? Two moments stand out the most for me. The first was with a steer I bought from Hiller Hay Farms named Stout. He was Reserve Champion Prospect Steer at the very first Farmfair Prospect Show, which was a huge milestone for me starting out. The second, and probably the highlight of my show career so far, was with M-T Bar Eddie the Eagle in 2019. He won multiple banners at all the fall shows and capped it off by being named Reserve Champion Bull at Agribition. That was one heck of an accomplishment — and even better because it was something my family and I got to share together.

Who has/have been your greatest influences in the livestock industry?

The greatest influence I had in my first few years of showing cattle was Elaine Hiller and the Hiller family. They were the ones who really got me hooked on being competitive in the show ring. From showing prospect cattle to Speckle Park–influenced steers and heifers, they pushed me to aim higher and helped shape the passion I still carry for the industry today.

What aspect of the industry has had the largest impact on you being a part of the livestock industry?

The people and community within the livestock industry have had the largest impact on me. The friendships, mentorship, and support you receive while showing and raising cattle make this industry truly special. Being part of a network of like-minded individuals who share knowledge and passion has shaped not only how I approach cattle but also how I value the industry as a whole.

What continues to excite and drive your ambitions in the livestock industry?

I’m excited by the opportunity to improve cattle genetics with each generation and to see the Speckle Park breed gain recognition internationally. Watching young people get involved, learning, and showing the breed keeps me motivated and reminds me why I started in the first place.

What is some advice you would give to a junior in the Speckle Park breed?

My advice to juniors is to get involved in every way you can — shows, sales, or just asking questions of experienced breeders. Don’t be afraid to put in the work and learn from every experience, because the knowledge, friendships, and confidence you gain will stay with you for life.

Your favourite quote by a judge or someone in the livestock industry?

“Good cattle are good cattle, no matter the breed.” This has always stuck with me as a reminder that quality, consistency, and hard work will always be recognized, regardless of the breed you work with.

MAKENZIE OLSON TISDALE, SK

My name is Makenzie Olson, and I am from Tisdale, Saskatchewan. I grew up on my family’s operation, Willow Lane Land and Cattle, where I manage a herd of purebred Speckle Park cattle alongside our commercial herd. I was a member of the Tisdale 4-H Beef Club for 13 years and have now been a leader for 2 years. I currently serve as Director of Youth Programs for the Canadian Junior Speckle Park Association. Academically, I hold a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan and a Diploma in Animal Science from Lakeland College, which have both deepened my knowledge and passion for the beef industry.

How did you first get interested in the breed and at what age?

My interest in the Speckle Park breed began at a young age while attending Agribition with my parents. Walking through the cattle barns, I was immediately drawn to the breed’s unique look and strong presence. At age nine, after selling my first 4-H steer, I purchased my first Speckle Park female and a junior membership with the Canadian Speckle Park Association. That decision marked the beginning of my purebred herd, which I have continued to grow and develop into what it is today.

What was the most memorable accomplishment you have had showing a Speckle Park?

One of my most memorable experiences was taking my first string of

cattle to Agribition and stepping into the ring alongside some of the top breeders in the industry. My proudest accomplishment to date is competing at multibreed shows with my Speckle Park cattle and successfully holding my own against strong multibreed competition. A highlight was being selected in the Top 5 of the Supreme at the 2024 Provincial 4-H Sask Show with Willow Lane Klassy Girl 7K, an achievement that reinforced my confidence in the quality of my program.

Who has/have been your greatest influences in the livestock industry?

My greatest influences have undoubtedly been my family. Growing up on our farm, I had the privilege of learning firsthand from my parents and grandparents, who instilled in me the values of hard work, dedication, and integrity. My family has been a constant source of help and reassurance, always pushing me to reach further and supporting me as I work to achieve my dreams. I have also been inspired by mentors I met through the Speckle Park breed, most notably Dustin and Curtis McAleer. The McAleer crew took me under their wing and have helped me every step of the way. From showing to breeding decisions, their knowledge and support have been invaluable. I can honestly say I would not be where I am today without the support and guidance of my family and the McAleers.

What aspect of the industry has had the largest impact on you being a part of the livestock industry?

Youth programs have had the greatest influence on my journey. From my years in 4-H to my current role supporting juniors, I’ve experienced firsthand how these opportunities build confidence, skills, and lifelong friendships. They not only shaped me as a cattle producer but also instilled a passion for giving back. Beyond the programs themselves, the sense of community within the livestock industry, the camaraderie, support, and shared passion, is something I deeply value.

What continues to excite and drive your ambitions in the livestock industry?

What excites me most is the constant opportunity for growth and improvement. Whether it’s developing a stronger cow herd, mentoring youth, or promoting the Speckle Park breed on a national and international stage, there is always something new to strive toward. The dynamic nature of the livestock industry ensures that I am always learning, evolving, and working toward greater achievements. That drive for progress is what keeps me passionate and motivated.

What is some advice you would give to a junior in the Speckle Park breed?

Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, whether it’s stepping into the show ring, participating in educational events, or simply asking questions. Don’t hesitate to put yourself out there, work hard, and learn from the people around you. Most importantly, enjoy the experience, appreciate good cattle, and value the friendships and connections you build along the way.

Your favourite quote by a judge or someone in the livestock industry? “The backdrop will fade, the banners will collect dust, but the lessons you learn and the people you meet will last a lifetime.”

FAITH CHIBRI LASHBURN, SK

My name is Faith Chibri, I am twenty two years old and from Lashburn, Saskatchewan. I am the third generation to be a part of my family’s Speckle Park operation, P.A.R. Ranch.

How did you get interested in the breed and what age were you?

As long as I can remember I have been involved in the speckle park breed. My family started their herd long before I was born, in 1983. By the time I was two years old I was already being brought to the cattle shows in our area. Once I was old enough, I’d attend Stockade Roundup, Farmfair, and Agribition and spend those three weeks learning and showing.

What was your most memorable accomplishment you have had showing a Speckle Park?

There are a variety of memorable moments I have had showing a speckle park but the one that stands out the most is the time I won Showmanship. It was 2018, Intermediate showmanship at 4-H expo, I was showing my heifer, Ms. Ellie Landry of P.A.R. 50E, and there was some tough competition, I ended up winning 1st place. It remains one of my most memorable accomplishments to date.

Who has/ have been your greatest influences in the livestock industry?

There is no shortage of influential and amazing people in this industry, but for me personally, my family has been and continues to be my greatest mentors in the livestock industry. I credit a lot of what I’ve learned to them, they have taught me every aspect of this industry and I don’t know where I would be without their guidance and influence.

What aspect of the industry has had the largest impact on you being a part of the livestock industry?

The aspect of the industry that has had the largest impact on me being a part of the industry is the desire to continue my family’s herd and legacy as well as the community that comes with the industry. Whether that is my family, or other producers, the support and connection within this industry has impacted me immensely.

What continues to excite you and drive your ambitions in the livestock industry?

The potential. The industry is always evolving and with the industry and specifically the speckle park breed, I see endless potential. The potential for growth and opportunities, and innovation. In my life, I already feel as though I have seen this breed evolve and I’m ecstatic to see what the future has in store for this breed and the livestock industry.

What is some advice you would give to a junior in the Speckle Park breed?

If I could give any advice to the junior members of this breed, it would be to have fun, to never give up, and to try your best. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, whether that is a 4-H exchange, applying for scholarships, or attending a cattle show that is far from home. Do it all, there is always something to learn and memories to be made. Finally, enjoy every moment, the good, the bad, the wins, and the losses. It isn’t about the banners or ribbons at the end of the day, it’s about the memories and friendships you made along the way.

Your favourite quote by a judge or someone in the livestock industry?

“There is no magical show stick or lucky brush, what there is, is hard work, confidence, passion, and a desire to succeed.” -unknown

JACKSON CORNER CALEDONIA, ON

My name is Jackson Corner, I am from Caledonia, Ontario. I’ve grown up active in the beef industry for the last 11 years, developing my skills through 4-H, showing, and breeding cattle. While my family and I started with no prior background, the opportunities I’ve had through agriculture have shaped my passion and future in the livestock industry immensely.

How did you first get interested in the breed and what age were you?

At age 10, I attended my local 4-H Rally Night along with my sister and dad. Out of the blue, my dad asked if we wanted to join the beef club. My sister and I eagerly said yes, not realizing the path it would lead us down. A month later we took a trip to Hugh MacNeil’s of Silver Tip Speckle Park and picked out 2 commercial Speckle Park calves. Their unique colour pattern and versatility really stood out to us.

What was the most memorable accomplishment you have had showing a Speckle Park?

One of my biggest highlights of my junior show career was winning Reserve Champion Junior Showperson at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair National Junior Beef Heifer Show in 2018 with my Speckle Park heifer, Miss Daisy. That moment meant a lot to me—not just for the accomplishment, but because Miss Daisy wasn’t the easiest to work with, and I really had to persevere with her.

Who has/have been your greatest influences in the livestock industry?

I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors and role models throughout my journey. Tyler and John Nostadt have been and continue to be, some of my greatest influences in the industry. My parents and family also play an important role, especially as we learned together starting from scratch.

What aspect of the industry has had the largest impact on you being apart of the livestock industry?

The people. The friendships, mentorship, and community within the livestock industry are second to none. The connections I’ve made through showing cattle have been some of the most rewarding and impactful experiences I’ve had.

What continues to excite and drive your ambitions in the livestock industry?

The chance to keep improving, whether that’s breeding better cattle, developing new skills, or setting bigger goals in the show ring. Every year brings new challenges and opportunities, that’s what keeps me motivated.

What is some advice you would give to a junior in the Speckle Park breed?

Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. My family and I started with Speckle Park, and as I grew in my skills and confidence, I started showing other breeds as well. Every experience—whether with Speckle Park or not—helped me learn something new and become a better cattleman. Be open to opportunities, ask questions, and remember that the more you challenge yourself, the more you’ll grow.

On August 16th the Speckle Park breed took center stage on the red clay at the PEI Provincial Exhibition Old Home Week for the 2nd time in the breeds history. There were 15 purebred animals entered in the open show.  There were exhibitors from Nova Scotia that came over to attend the show and a couple breeders from PEI. New breeders Bruce Wood and Bromwyn Crane Mill Creek Speckle Park who were introduced to the breed as a result of the show last year exhibited for the first time.

Sponsorship for the show came from breeders across the country which allowed for prizes to be awarded to the champions and also provided for a pizza party in the barn for all cattle exhibitors following the open show on Saturday. The exhibitors from all breeds really were appreciative of the grab and go meal as there were 4H and junior shows continuing on after the open show. It also meant that they got a minute to look at the Speckle Park cattle in the barns as they got food. The judge for the day was John Nelson from Quebec.

A sincere thank you to all our sponsors that made the show possible without their generosity it would not be possible to host a show and create an interest in the Speckle Park breed in Atlantic Canada. All exhibitors commented on the number of questions they were getting about the breed, where did they come from and about the meat quality. This generated a lot of conversations with even cattle breeders that are gaining more interest in the breed.

YOUTH SPOTLIGHT

The National Junior Speckle Park Show in Great Village, NS was the main focus of the spring and summer for the Junior Association. The event brought together juniors from across the country to compete, learn, and connect within the breed. The show was well-received, with strong entries, great participation in competitions, and positive feedback from exhibitors and their families. Thank you to all sponsors and volunteers who helped make this year’s show such a success.

New this year, the CJSPA launched a membership promotion running from May 1 to July 31. Designed to bring in new members, this initiative provided a CJSPA swag package to all 2025 registered junior members. It was well received, with 40 juniors receiving swag packages as part of their 2025 membership. This promotion would not have been possible without the generous support from the 2024 Carmark Donation Heifer at Agribition.

The CJSPA also continues to support and recognize youth beyond our own membership by distributing 4-H awards to members showing Speckle Park projects across Canada. To date, we have awarded over 140 4-H awards, celebrating juniors who represent the breed in their local 4-H clubs and Achievement Days.

The Junior Association is proud of the momentum gained through this summer’s activities and looks forward to continuing to engage and support our junior members.

This year, all proceeds from the donation heifer will go directly toward the Australian Exchange Fund, helping provide junior members with incredible international learning opportunities and hands-on experiences that will strengthen their future in the breed and the cattle industry.

This heifer is more than just a genetic investment—she represents the spirit of growth, connection, and opportunity. 2026 AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGE FUND

LACHLAN LITFIN

My family owns and operates what was formerly known as Crutchfield Pastoral Company, which originally focused on breeding Brahman cattle. However, the business name has since been discontinued. Over the past 12 years, we’ve gradually reduced our Brahman numbers and introduced a new breed to improve the overall quality of our herd and increase our chances of producing competitive show steers during the show season.

Today, we run more than 50 Speckle Park heifers and cows, 30 Limo cross heifers, also along with two purebred Speckle Park bulls and 2 purebred limousin bulls. Our main goal is to breed high-quality steers and heifers with strong potential in the show ring. We’re currently trialling Speckle Park × Limousin crosses in the hopes of developing the ideal show steer.

Over the last four years, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with a number of Speckle Park studs, most notably Hawthorn Speckle Park Stud. I’ve been lucky enough to present the majority of their bulls, heifers and steers across various show circuits, including the Lismore North Coast National and The Brisbane Royal Show.

I’m currently involved with several outstanding Speckle Park studs. Many of these studs have approached me to exhibit their cattle or assist with herd management. I’m proud to represent and work alongside some incredible teams, including Hawthorn Speckle Park, Foxtail Hill Speckle Park, SND Signature Speckles, and Sunnydale Speckle Park.

I love learning how different Speckle Park studs across Australia manage and grow their cattle. Every experience offers something new, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from a wide range of people while expanding my own knowledge—and using that knowledge to help others in return.

The chance to travel to Canada is incredibly exciting, as it would allow me to learn directly from the breed’s country of origin and see how studs over there manage, feed, and present their cattle. I’m especially keen to gain insight into how they produce topquality animals and how I can apply those lessons to my own herd.

I can’t wait to explore the different methods and approaches overseas, then bring what I’ve learned back home to improve my own cattle and my skills, to also share this knowledge with others in the Australian Speckle Park community.

At the 2025 Brisbane Royal Show Speckle Park Feature, I had the privilege of exhibiting the following cattle:

HAWTHORN VIN DIESEL Reserve Champion Bull Calf

SND SIGNATURE RATHER PERFECT Senior Champion Cow & Calf, Grand Champion Cow & Calf, and Supreme Speckle Park Exhibit

HAWTHORN 2025 SHOW TEAM Including 2 Senior Bulls, 2 Bull calves and 4 Heifers

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to exhibit such outstanding animals and to represent Speckle Park as the feature breed at such a prestigious event.

YOUTH SPOTLIGHT

NATIONAL JUNIOR SHOW

This year the Canadian Junior Speckle Park National Show was held at Balamore Farms in Great Village, Nova Scotia on July 6, 2025. The event brought together juniors from across the country, showcasing some of the great cattle our breed has to offer.

We were fortunate to see strong participation, with 18 head entered by 13 exhibitors, from Alberta, New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia. It was especially encouraging to see a great mix of long-time breeders and new members.

Our judge was Barrett Elliot from St Brieux, Saskatchewan. Barrett and his wife Shelby own and operate Elldem Cattle Investments. There they have a 50 head cow operation consisting of mainly purebred black angus with the added focus of club calf show genetics. Barrett made his way through the 4h program and participated in 3 separate 4-H clubs in his time, as well as numerous junior breed associations. Barrett exhibits cattle all throughout the year at most major stock shows, and he also consigns to 2 annual sales- The Momentum Speckle Park and Angus Bull and Female Sale held in April and the November Gold Prospect Steer and Heifer sale held in October located in Lloydminster, Sk.

SUBMIT YOUR 4-H SPECKLE PARK PROJECT PHOTOS FOR A CHANCE TO WIN!

To celebrate and showcase the hard work of our Speckle Park junior enthusiasts, the Canadian Junior Speckle Park Association is excited to launch a new 4-H Picture Submission Raffle! Submit a BACKDROP or BANNER photo of your Speckle Park 4-H project and you will be entered to win a prize basket valued at $300, filled with show-day essentials including combs, halters, and grooming products.

Each member will receive one entry per project, and all previously submitted photos will be automatically included in the draw. Submissions must be received by the 4-H award deadline (September 30th), and members are encouraged to include a short write-up about their project achievements when sending in their photos.

Visit the “Youth” page on the CSPA website to submit your photos!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to our sponsors Underhill Specs, Green Diamond Equipment, Maritime Speckle Park Jr Club & MIP Show Supply. We are also extremely thankful to the Balamore Farm crew for welcoming us into their facility and for helping out throughout the weekend.

We are proud of how the event came together. The quality of cattle exhibited, the spirit of fellowship among juniors, and the opportunity to promote our breed are all accomplishments we can celebrate.

For any pictures taken throughout the weekend check out Mehgan Black Photography, as he has donated all the photos to us free of cost!

We also hosted a Satellite portion of the National Junior show where we had 6 participants. In the Satellite Show there were Photography, Design and Video classes. All classes were judged by an anonymous panel of 3 judges.

Welcome to the Canadian Speckle Park Junior Point Shows Program, where excellence in breeding and showmanship are celebrated!

Below is an overview of the program:

OBJECTIVE The Canadian Speckle Park Junior Point Shows Program aims to:

• Encourage participation and healthy competition among the CSPA youth in order to continually improve the breed and to improve their unique individual skills.

• Provide recognition for those showcasing top-performing Speckle Park cattle and promoting the breed.

THE FOLLOWING AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED EACH YEAR:

1. Purebred Show Heifer of the Year

2. Speckle Park Influence Show Heifer of the Year

3. Purebred or Speckle Park Influence Show Steer of the Year

4. Showmanship Champion of the Year

RULES & REGULATIONS

Awards are presented based on the number of points accumulated over the course of the year. Placings at any junior or open shows across Canada (all breeds & strictly Speckle Park shows) will be tallied up to determine a winner in each category, however, you must submit your show results to the Brigitte at the CSPA office (info@canadianspecklepark.ca) by December 31st. Points will be awarded to the top five animals or showpeople in each class or split, division champions and reserves and overall grand and reserve champions.

There are no limits on the number of animals that can be exhibited by an individual member.

Animals competing must have a Canadian Speckle Park Association registration number at the time of judging (unless you are exhibiting a Speckle Park influence heifer or Speckle Park influence steer) and youth competing must have a valid CSPA Junior membership.

Points will be tallied as follows:

Individual Class Placings in a show with 75 plus entries

1st – 10, 2nd – 9, 3rd – 8, 4th – 7, 5th – 6 Grand Champion – 10 // Reserve Champion – 5

Individual Class Placings in a show with under 75 entries

1st – 5, 2nd – 4, 3rd – 3, 4th – 2, 5th – 1 Grand Champion – 5 // Reserve Champion – 3

*The above requirements are subject to change as we grow this program. Any changes made will be communicated by the CSPA to the membership via email.
