elcome to the third issue of Parker in 2017. The Annual Conference and Trade Show is just around the corner now, and so when you are reading this, we all will be about to gather at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, nestled into the beautiful mountains in Banff, Alberta for the 34th edition of the Canadian parking industry’s premier event.

This year, you will be whisked to the top of Sulphur Mountain to open the conference where you will experience breathtaking views, refreshments and networking. Be prepared for one game show, two technical tours, three keynote speakers, and four days jam-packed with educational sessions, trade show exhibition and a whole lot of fun! This issue of Parker has taken on a bit of a ‘yearbook’ feel, as we highlight more people in our industry. From new members - some of whom have been showcased - but all that we welcome with open arms, to the 2017 Canadian Parking Association Scholarship winners and new graduates from the CPA’s CCPFM certification program.

This past quarter saw three of the CPA’s local chapters holding events. You can find out exactly what goes on at the local level further along in this issue. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the generous contributions of volunteer time and sponsorships. This support enables organizers to put together excellent opportunities for members, and non-members alike, an opportunity to network and share ideas. Because of this, the industry continues to strengthen as CPA provides more value for participants. We are very grateful and extend a sincere thanks!

Not to be ranting only about the people in the parking industry, we also bring to you some hot topics that, leading up to the conference, will put you in the right frame of mind to explore new concepts that will be scrutinized further during the event.

How prepared are you for the onslaught of autonomous vehicles in your parking facilities? A taste of some questions being raised is in Part 1 of a two-part article on ‘AV’s. To drill right down to the core of this, conference delegates will be treated to a panel session in Banff where we will examine the topic further, with follow up in the 4th quarter Parker. Fascinating stuff!

You will read about surface parking lot innovation that is emerging in many forms. First off is a review on parking lot pavements and how to care for your surface lot. Next, you will find information about using recycled plastics to transform a parking area into a troublefree surface. Are you choosing the right bollard? I hope that your summer was filled with a healthy mix of work and play.

Perhaps you spent less time reading industry periodicals and technical manuals, and chose to add a whodunnit novel to your reading list?

The focus of my previous President’s letter in the Q2 Parker magazine was about the need to continually educate and re-educate ourselves in this post-modern era that moves at cyber speed. The sheer volume of Internet traffic in social media and via email can leave us distracted by a thousand flashes of light that appear on our video screen; and often there is little substance behind the style, and we are left grasping at shadows.

The Canadian Parking Association remains committed to serve as a source for substantive publications and professional development programs that help build knowledge and skills. Members are encouraged to provide feedback on our publications and also to submit articles of interest to be shared through the various CPA publications.

CPA member privileges include access to a wide range of technical bulletins and provides access to training courses such as the Canadian Certified Parking Facility Manager (“CCPFM”) program. This credential has been awarded to more than 300 parking professionals in the Canadian industry since its inception, and now the CPA is pleased to announce the program has recently undergone an update to reflect the changes in the parking industry. The new program will be rolled out to members this fall.

Inside this edition of the Parker magazine there are various articles regarding technology innovations such as new pavement products; and we continue to cover the emerging developments in the advent of autonomous/self-driving vehicles.

The CPA Staff and Board of Directors are continuing to refine the program for the upcoming Conference & Trade Show (which is being held in Banff from October 17-20). The presentations and round-table sessions are being designed to cover meaningful and relevant subject matter while also ensuring that these sessions are both interesting and informative.

On behalf of the CPA Board of Directors, I would like to extend an invitation for each and every one of you to join us in Banff. And why not reach out to your connections and extend the invitation? For the benefit of any new members reading this letter, I should also mention that the annual CPA Conference is not just about education and professional development. Year-after-year conference attendees tell us that they had a great time networking and socializing with industry colleagues.

And finally, you won’t want to miss the comical political satire of the inimitable and curmudgeonly Rex Murphy during the show closing event.

J’espère que vous avez su concilier sainement travail et plaisir au cours de l’été. Vous avez peut-être passé moins de temps à lire des magazines spécialisés et des manuels techniques pour plutôt ajouter un roman policier à votre liste de lecture?

Ma dernière lettre du président, parue dans l’édition du second trimestre du magazine Parker, traitait du besoin de se tenir constamment à jour en cette ère post-moderne où tout évolue à un rythme effréné. Le trafic Internet associé aux médias sociaux et aux courriels se manifestant constamment sur nos écrans peut facilement nous distraire et il y a souvent peu de substance derrière les éclats : nous nous retrouvons donc à pourchasser l’éphémère.

L’Association canadienne du stationnement reste déterminée à demeurer une source de publications substantielles et de programmes de perfectionnement professionnel destinés à contribuer à l’acquisition de compétences et de connaissances. Nous encourageons nos membres à nous faire part de commentaires concernant nos différentes publications et à nous proposer des articles d’intérêt à y inclure.

Les membres de l’ACS jouissent d’un accès à un large éventail de bulletins techniques et de formations comme le programme de GCASS. À ce jour, cette attestation a été décernée à plus de 300 professionnels du domaine canadien du stationnement et l’ACS est aujourd’hui heureuse d’annoncer que le programme a récemment été mis à jour pour tenir compte des dernières évolutions dans le

secteur du stationnement. Le nouveau programme sera présenté aux membres cet automne.

La présente édition du magazine Parker contient différents articles portant sur les innovations technologiques comme les nouveaux produits de revêtement; de plus, nous continuons à rapporter les avancées relatives aux véhicules autonomes.

Nous tentons de prévoir des exposés et des tables rondes qui traiteront de sujets importants et pertinents tout en étant intéressants et informatifs.

Solar PV Covered Parking Benefits

Parking lots are assets for those that charge for the spaces within them, or need them to attract customers or even employees. They serve one main purpose, to provide a place to leave cars, whether it is for an hour, or a day. What if that asset could be turned into a multi-purpose piece of land that not only provides parking, but generates additional cashflow, and helps the environment? Parking lots can do a surprising thing, they can generate electricity, and not only that, its green energy. Introducing solar covered parking can do just that.

Why would a parking lot operator want to be a producer of green energy? Large cities can have a tremendous amount of asphalt covered surfaces, some above 40% of their land mass. Suburban areas don’t escape these large amounts of asphalt coverage either. A lot of that density is roadways, with surface parking lots significantly adding to the total as well. What does all this asphalt do to our environment if we just use it for parking cars?

When it comes to identifying the greatest challenge to meeting Green House Gas (GHG) reductions, transportation leads in Ontario as the single-largest emitting sector in the economy at 35%. In response to these statistics, the Ontario Government is encouraging drivers to switch to electric vehicles, (EV’s) by offering rebates of up to $14,000 with the purchase of an EV. Quebec and B.C. have similar statistics and have also offered incentives. The Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario(EVCO) incentive serves to increase access to charging stations with funding to build a network of fast-charging EV stations in cities, along highways, at workplaces, apartments, condos, and public places across Ontario. These measures create demand for additional EV charging in locations where cars need to park whether they be at shopping malls, near the office, universities and schools, close to the entertainment district or sports events. These EV chargers are going to need energy, and why not a clean source?

How many of these new EVs will be coming to your parking lot?

That is going to depend on whether or not facilities for charging are made available. With range anxiety being one of the largest reasons many people remain cautious about purchasing an EV, it will be enhancement of this technology, and the number of available charging stations that will change this thinking. We’d all still be riding horses if there were only a handful of gas stations, or if it took a significant time to fuel an internal combustion vehicle. Very

few EVs are going to pull into gas station type infrastructure where the fastest chargers will top up an EV in 15 minutes while they wait.

Idle time is something few drivers have a tolerance for, and I’d count 15 minutes buying a chocolate bar as idle time. The EV charging infrastructure is rapidly changing, and most of the charging will occur where long term parking already happens. In these instances, the owner and the car are already there, and the owner has priorities other than waiting for his electric battery to charge. While in a meeting, charge your car at the same time. Visiting a friend in the hospital, you can charge your car. Watching your favourite sports team from the 10th row (or the 50th), you can charge your car.

Soon, you will be able to charge your car, and check it on your smart phone if you want, all while doing something else. These parking patrons are also going to be willing to pay for the convenience of

this service. If they have an EV and are in need of a charge to get to their next destination, they will pay for the parking spot, they will also pay for the electricity, and at a premium rate. As the cost of electricity increases, solar carports will be producing energy at the same cost.

Your cost will be fixed, but your parking patrons will be willing to pay more just as they would to charge at home. Not only will EV chargers become a necessity soon enough, they will add to your bottom line at an ever increasing rate based on historical energy cost trends.

EVs are driven by the necessity to reduce GHG emissions, and carports are a great source of power to charge these EVs. How about other benefits of solar covered parking lots? They can help the environment and provide a green image. In 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency in the US completed a paper on the Urban Heat Island (UHI) affect 1. One section of this paper was specifically on the advantages of adding cool pavements to reduce the effects of asphalt, and even aged concrete that can reach temperatures of 48 to 67oC on the surface during the summer.

The EPA paper provides a wonderful visual example of the extreme using a thermal camera in Arizona with both concrete and asphalt surfaces shown.

There are several ways to eliminate the UHI affect; using more reflective and porous surfaces, planting trees, and planning for lots to be shaded by other structures. Other structures used to mean buildings, and in the South carports have existed for a long time. But only one solution offers asphalt shading, and energy generation. That solution is the solar carport. Becoming ever popular in the US, in both Southern and Northern climates, there has been little adoption in Canada thus far. Here it is still more common to see landscaping being required and added. A study published in 2006, compared the 2 effects of UHI with urban forestry and with solar carports . Solar PV was shown to reduce the surface temperature of asphalt over twice as much as mature tree cover. A solar carport also provides this affect instantaneously after it is installed, not partially over several years as the shade trees grow. Now that will help keep cars cool and reduce how long AC needs to be turned up to the max. Trees also require space and water for growth. Solar carports can be aligned to fit within existing parking footprints, and need very little water for maintenance over their lifetime. They can be designed to divert water to grey water systems and can be used for maintenance (or watering the landscaping on the perimeter).

Snow covered parking lot…. could be yours?

To summarize, solar carports have many uses. They offer: • Good CPTED lighting practices for enhanced safety • Conservation of water, reclaimed for other uses • Reduced emissions from ICE vehicles

• Enhanced winter time safety on the roads by reducing flying snow • Covered premium parking as an added revenue stream • Provision of clean power, another revenue source

• Green energy from overhead can power current and future electric vehicle demand • Can be coupled with energy storage to provide independent energy

Cleaner energy choices affect everyone, and the cost of producing renewable energy is closing in on conventional sources. It has also become a hot topic with different levels of government. In 2009, Ontario committed to closing coal fired plants, high emitters of airborne pollutants. At the time 19 Coal boiler plants contributed nearly one quarter of the Provinces energy. By 2007, Carbon emissions from coal-fired generation had risen to more than 41 million metric tons annually.

In Ontario, the Provincial government introduced the Green Energy and Economy Act in 2009. 17 new natural gas-fired generating stations were built with 10,000 megawatts of capacity, and in addition to solar, wind and biomass, they replaced the generating capacity that coal previously provided.

Improving Your Lot’s Life

Parking lots play a vital role in the success of the buildings they serve, serving as a de-facto lobby and delivering the initial impression of the property. A run-down parking lot creates an unattractive and unwelcoming image that makes the entire complex seem less appealing and inviting. Perhaps more importantly, a derelict lot can also pose potentially hazardous conditions for visitors and employees and their vehicles. Not only can this undermine a business by making it’s location less attractive to potential customers, but it can also lead to costly legal liability if visitors or employees suffer personal injury or damaged vehicles.

Yet, in spite of the obvious hazards that can be caused by run-down or improperly maintained parking lots, many owners treat their lots as an afterthought. This is partly a perception problem. Many owners develop lots rather than a parkade because they mistakenly think that parking lots are essentially maintenance-free. They assume that they can just pave over an area of land, paint in stripes for spaces, and forget about it.

While it’s true that the typical lot requires less maintenance than a parkade, maintenance is required. Sure, there are no concrete ramps, floors, or support columns to care for, but a parking lot’s pavement undergoes a great deal of wear and tear every day from multi-ton vehicles, rain and snow, and even the rays of the sun. As such, it’s essential to have an assessment and maintenance plan to preserve the property’s aesthetics, ensure customer and tenant safety, and extend the service life of the pavement.

Pavements can be one of a commercial facility’s most expensive assets to maintain, but these costs can be minimized. There are seven primary types of asphalt distress, any one of which can require repair. The good news is that a pavement evaluation program, led by a trained and experienced pavement assessor, can identify potential problems before they require major overhauls, saving owners and their property managers tens of thousands of dollars.

SIGNS OF TROUBLE

There are seven common types of asphalt deterioration, and they tend to progress from one to another. The first sign of trouble appears in the form of longitudinal cracks. Longitudinal cracks typically appear along joints, which are the weakest part of the pavement. They can result from poor joint construction or location, or they may be an indication of fatigue within the stabilizing base below. Even though longitudinal cracks are just an early form of deterioration, they can cause major problems down the line by allowing moisture to infiltrate the concrete.

The next common form of deterioration is transverse cracking, which extends across the pavement perpendicular to longitudinal joints. Transverse cracking usually results from shrinkage of the stabilizing base below and is often related to low temperatures impacting the asphalt. Transverse cracking is also often an indication that the stabilizing base is also cracked. As longitudinal and transverse cracking increase in magnitude and density, they form block-like patterns called block cracking. Block

cracking is a series of interconnected cracks that appear as rectangular pieces, or blocks. Like longitudinal cracks, block cracking can also allow moisture to infiltrate the asphalt, which can undermine the pavement.

When aggregate or asphalt binder materials wear away at the surface, raveling results. Raveling is essentially the disintegration of the asphalt surface causing pieces of the pavement to come loose. This can lead to gaps within the pavement surface, roughening of the surface, and loss of binder, and thus protection from moisture.

While these first four types of deterioration are signs of trouble, they can often be treated with inexpensive preventative maintenance procedures such as a crack seal or seal coat. Unfortunately, many owners and their maintenance consultants unnecessarily utilize more costly reconstruction, and as a result end up spending thousands more than necessary to fix what are essentially simple and common issues.

That said, higher density cracking and higher severity raveling often do require more involved and costly interventions. For instance, rutting is a permanent deformation of the pavement that occurs when ruts appear in the subgrade beneath the pavement.

The formation of ruts can lead to ponded water, which can lead to vehicle hydroplaning and other related problems. There are two basic types of rutting: mix rutting and subgrade rutting. Rutting is often the result of initial construction or design techniques, such as inadequate pavement structure or insufficient compaction of

base layers during construction.

When the subgrade is no longer able to support the pavement structure, fatigue cracking will set it. Fatigue cracking, or alligator cracking, resembles an alligator skin’s diamond-shaped pattern. Both rutting and fatigue cracking are indications that, in addition to the obvious surface deterioration there is also significant corrosion within the asphalt. Left untreated, these issues cause the pavement to settle or depress, which ends up forming a pothole.

These more advanced forms of deterioration typically call for mill and overlay rehabilitation, a much more expensive form of rehabilitation. As such, it is imperative to identify the warning signs and resolve early premature distress before these major—and much more expensive—problems appear. Parking owners and their operators should be vigilant about monitoring the condition of the pavement in their parking lots. They should keep to a regular schedule of inspecting pavement surfaces, and staff should be trained to identify the various types of deterioration by sight. In parts of Canada that experience particularly inclement weather and wide fluctuations in temperatures, it may make sense to hire a pavement consultant to monitor pavement condition and implement maintenance fixes before they turn into major problems.

When it’s apparent that potentially significant pavement damage is already emerging or may be already present, it is advisable to turn to a pavement specialist with experience in geotechnical engineering, observation and testing for pavement design, and expertise in all aspects of pavement engineering, including surface and subsurface investigation, pavement evaluation, forensic failure analysis studies, pavement design, pavement management systems, and construction quality assurance and quality control. Pavement responds differently to different types of uses, as well as different climates. It’s important to have a comprehensive pavement maintenance and repair strategy that takes into account all of the issues that can impact the pavement’s performance and lifespan. Before this, he finished his Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology and worked as a Project Coordinator in a pipeline project.

His experiences encouraged him to further develop his knowledge and skills and strive to get a degree as a Civil Engineer. In his free time, Sam is active in sports and volunteers frequently at different institutions like the Habitat for Humanity and church organizations to give back to the community and encourage other young immigrants.

University of Calgary – Bachelor, Nursing Jireh is a third-year student studying Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Calgary. She has been interested in athletics and sports medicine during her high school years, which led her to study Nursing. Apart from athletics, Jireh also finds fulfillment in volunteering.

Recently, her church collaborated with Roots in Romania to send a mission team to help facilitate Vacation Bible Schools at various villages in Romania. Jireh was a team leader for the youth and teenagers; it was a great and rewarding experience for her to build connections with the children of these villages despite the language barrier present.

On Thursday, June 8th, 2017, the Guelph and Toronto District Chapters joined forces once again to host the 2nd annual CPA Golf Tournament held at the Royal Ontario Golf Club in Milton.

Registration started at noon with the first tee off at 1:03 pm.

All golfers were equipped with a ‘goodie bag’, which included complimentary snacks, cold beverages, and gifts from some of our many sponsors.

It was warm and sunny, and the beverage cart was well stocked which made for a perfect golfing day! The golfers finished 18 holes and returned to the club house around 6:00 pm where mingling and networking continued.

A brief update on CPA activities was presented: details of the upcoming conference in Banff, AB were shared and participants were encouraged to get their registrations in before June 30 to be eligible for the early bird prize draws; the group discussed the importance of membership in the Canadian Parking Association and the benefits that that members enjoy. That brought us to the call for dinner, following which, door prizes were won, best and

most honest golfer awards were presented, and a 50/50 draw was held.

The event was organized by Anna Marie O’Connell and Rick Duffy with the able assistance of Alan Rowe and Steve O’Connell.

Once again, a big “Thank You”, to all of our sponsors, who helped to make this a very successful event, as well as all the golfers who took time from their busy schedules to attend and support the CPA. Une brève mise à jour portant sur les activités de l’ACS a été présentée. Des détails portant sur la conférence qui sera tenue à Banff ont été dévoilés et les participants ont été encouragés à s’inscrire avant le 30 juin pour être admissibles à participer au tirage de prix pour les inscriptions hâtives. Le groupe a discuté de l’importance d’être membre de l’Association canadienne du stationnement et des avantages connexes. Parking in the driverless era PART 1

We are on the brink of a revolution, a revolution that will profoundly affect society, change the way cities look and function and fundamentally transform how people and goods move.

It’s been dubbed the “driverless revolution” and it will be brought about by the advent of autonomous vehicles (AV), cars that drive themselves with little or no human intervention. In addition to their effect on modes of transport, AVs are poised to disrupt many industries: transit, insurance, all industries that currently need drivers, driving support services, and the technology sector — large industries that will have to shift their strategies in the wake of driverless cars.

One major disruption could be on parking.

Among other innovations, the revolution will bring, we will see AV fleets moving continuously between the various places they are needed, rendering the need for close and convenient parking spaces much less necessary.

As Alain L. Kornhauser of Princeton University told the online magazine Curbed, "Having parking wedded or close to where people spend time, that’s going to be a thing of the past. If I go to a football game, my car doesn’t need to stay with me. If I’m at the office, it doesn’t need to be there.

The current shopping centre with the sea of 1 parking around it, that’s dead.”

How soon will that revolution begin? A number of car manufacturers predict that AVs will be launched about 2020, with many suppliers focusing first on driverless taxis.

RethinkX, a think tank on technology-driven disruption, believes that by 2030 “95% of U.S. passenger miles traveled will be served 2 by autonomous electric vehicles.” Others foresee a clear majority of urbanites not even needing to own cars by 2040, because they’ll subscribe to some form of on-demand 3 self-driving car service. McKinsey & Company believe that once technological and regulatory issues have been resolved, by 2040 up to 85 percent of new cars sold 4 could be fully autonomous.

A joint report by the Conference Board of Canada and the Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence (CAVCOE) states that AVs are already here in some way and will rule the roads much sooner 5 than most people expect.

Carmakers are investing big on the promises of the driverless revolution and so are the

tech giants that rule the internet today.

Google has been working on self-driving 6 technology since 2009 . Its AV fleet has already logged over two million miles, much of it done on roads. Recently, Tim Cook said that Apple was plowing resources into developing technology to control driverless vehicles and did not rule out building its 7 own car at some point . Amazon is said to be exploring ways to use self-driving vehicles 8 to deliver packages . Even Facebook stirred some speculations when the company registered the domain names Facebook.

Ford, GM, Audi, BMW, Volvo, and, of course, Tesla, are among the big car companies making massive investments on what is considered a race for the future of 10 transportation . Last June, General Motors announced that it had completed production of 130 Chevrolet Bolt EV test vehicles equipped with its next generation of selfdriving technology. The vehicles will join the more than 50 current-generation self-driving Bolt EVs already deployed in testing fleets in San Francisco; Scottsdale, Arizona; and 11 metro Detroit .

The driverless society: utopia or dystopia?

A 2015 report by the Conference Board of Canada and CAVCOE lists the advantages of the driverless society. The most significant, they state, is safety: “By removing the driver from behind the wheel, AVs are expected to eliminate most of the 93 per cent of collisions that currently involve human 12 error.” Another significant advantage: AVs will promote fluid traffic, which in turn should, if not make congestion a thing of the past, at least reduce it considerably and lessen its environmental impact.

All scenarios of the driverless future are not so rosy. One thing that worries many people is job displacement. Also, urbanists and transportation experts hope that AVs will not become a single-occupancy vehicle, which – because the convenience of not having to drive would compel people to travel more – and would result in more traffic and more urban sprawl.

Whichever scenario of a driverless society comes about (a good bet would be a blend of utopian and dystopian visions – with a

dash of unforeseen changes in the mix), one element remains constant: the need for parking spaces will be greatly reduced.

Users won’t need to park their vehicles at their destination: an AV can relocate itself to an area of free parking or use a "return-tohome" mode. Furthermore, if public policies help foster lower-cost, personalized mass transit, users will be able to call a self-driving taxi, which will pick them up; take them to their office, home, or wherever they are going; drop them off at the front door; and 13 then continue on to other customers.

Experts agree: autonomous cars will change parking as we know it. No more losing one’s car in multilevel parking garages, circling the block looking for a parking space or waiting for dawdling drivers to find one. As a result, the infrastructure required to house vehicles within a town or city will be radically altered.

Tesla’s vehicles are already “Summon”, a self-parking has the car drive out of a or garage by itself. With

themselves, humans won’t have to exit, and cars will be able to fit into narrower berths that may eventually shrink from a traditional 9.0-foot width to perhaps 7.0- or even 14 6.5 feet wide. Automaker Audi has estimated that a 26% reduction in needed space can be realized with autonomous cars sharing the garage with human-driven vehicles. In a garage reserved exclusively for self-parking cars, the result would be 62% reduction in 15 space needed.

Coupled with a wide adoption of autonomous transport services, the advent of AVs could reduce the overall demand for parking in the U.S. by 5.7 billion square meters (61 billion square feet) by 2035, estimates Amy Korte of the Boston-based architectural 16 firm Arrowstreet.

Planning for the revolution AvalonBay Communities Inc., one of the United States’ biggest apartment developers, is working on plans for a grand residential complex in downtown Los Angeles where a two-floor underground parking garage serving 1,000 cars is included.

But this garage is being designed with level rather than inclined floors common to many garages so it could someday be converted into shops, a gym and a theater. In short, it’s designed to eventually serve 17 other uses.

Should future parking infrastructure be designed to adapt to a shrinking need for car spaces? It could, for instance, be able to handle parking while also serving as a venue for multifunctional events and be integrated into the overall transportation scheme of a neighborhood, with parking facilities, connection to a transit stop, retail stores, bike and car sharing, private bike parking.

Have urban development organizations considered the impacts that AVs will have on their infrastructure, tax structure, real estate industries and revenues? AVs will affect urban governance, if only because falling parking fees and fines could take a big bite out of public budgets.

Furthermore, major infrastructure projects being built now will last for 30 to 50 years or more. The Conference Board of Canada and CAVCOE recommends that all transit and transportation-related infrastructure projects include a detailed AV impact assessment study. This is admittedly difficult because AVs are an emerging technology and the regulations, standards, codes or guidelines are a work in progress, Nevertheless, we need planning based on the best estimate of the future. Plans based on 20th Century principles and data will be fundamentally flawed.

The driverless revolution is upon us, its consequences still a big unknown. While a majority of experts agree that it should result in a decrease for the need for parking, others argue that it could produce 18 the opposite. One thing is sure: as long as humans need to move around, there will be vehicles to take them, and those vehicles will need a place to stop once in a while. n In the next issue, we will discuss how transport experts, urban planners and the parking industry perceive and prepare for the driverless future.

How to choose the right traffic bollard for your business

Parking lot safety all comes down to selecting the right bollard

Bollards are often over-looked but they play a significant role in the safety and aesthetics of almost every business.

In a way, they are kind of like the masked vigilantes of a superhero movie—they never ask for thanks, they just silently protect the citizens and structures around them.

That analogy might be a bit dramatic, but bollards really can save lives and prevent property damage. The key is selecting the right type for your business.

In its simplest form, a bollard is an unadorned metal post used in front of buildings or other outdoor spaces in which the flow of traffic must be controlled. They are normally spaced out so that typically-sized vehicles can’t get through them and this makes them an essential component of safe perimeters and parking lots. Bollards are available in varying colors, heights, widths and degrees of ornamentation and impact-resistance. A properly-chosen bollard will blend with a business’ architecture while providing an adequate level of impact-resistance to prevent property damage and protect pedestrians.

Normally, a business will select various types of traffic control bollard to perform these tasks on their property.

Traffic bollards perform serval functions: they can help separate cars and pedestrians, clearly delineate where traffic is supposed to flow, block cars from pedestrian walk-ways, visually aid traffic in areas notorious for limited visibility, and enclose car-free zones.

Types of traffic control bollards Not all traffic patterns are the same, and neither are all traffic control bollards. The type of bollard that should be selected depends on its primary purpose—will it be directing traffic in an area with changing traffic patterns, blocking off an area for an event, separating a bike lane, directing parking lot traffic, or doing something else entirely?

Here are four of the most commonly-used traffic bollards:

STEEL PIPE BOLLARDS Steel pipe bollards are, by far, the most commonly-used bollards in parking lots and around buildings. They are set in a concrete substrate and filled with concrete to provide impact resistance from vehicles bumping into them. Because of this, they are often used to guide traffic and protect pedestrians and property from errant vehicles. Many manufacturers even certify the ability of their bollards to stop vehicles travelling at certain speeds; the designation these bollards are given is known as a K-rating.

Steel pipe bollards have a very basic look but they can be painted or covered with a plastic post covers to increase visibility and improve their aesthetic value. For higher-end businesses, stainless steel and ornamented iron covers are also available. Steel pipe bollards should be used in traffic applications where vehicle encroachment presents a real threat.

REMOVABLE BOLLARDS

Removable bollards are sturdy and look like permanent bollards, but they can be removed from a receiver in the ground to permit vehicle access when needed. Though they are excellent for providing visual cues to drivers, they do not provide an adequate level of impact resistance to stop a vehicle.

Removable bollards are useful in areas that see increased vehicle traffic during large-scale events, areas that may occasionally need to be designated as “car-free” due to a high volume of foot traffic, or in areas that only authorized vehicles are permitted to enter.

RETRACTABLE BOLLARDS

Retractable bollards are a closely related to removable bollards but feature several distinct differences. They are more expensive than removable bollards, but they can quickly and smoothly be retracted into a concrete receiver below the ground. When they are fully retracted, the receiver is covered and lies flush with the ground to prevent trip and fall accidents. Though this bollard does not offer a high level of impact-resistance, it is useful in many of the same situations that you would use removable bollards but retractable bollards don’t require additional storage space when not in use.

They are often an ideal choice for areas that need to be kept free of vehicles so that emergency vehicles may enter.

FLEXIBLE BOLLARDS

Flexible traffic bollards are rigid enough to give the appearance of sturdy steel bollards but they are actually composed of plastic polymer. They can bend up to ninety degrees upon impact with WPS CPA Half Page v1.pdf

a vehicle and will return to their original form afterwards. This type of bollard is particularly useful for marking parking lots or curves in the road where driver may turn their cars too sharply without realizing it—unless they have a visual cue (like a traffic bollard) to help direct them. Pedestrians and building owners appreciate the clear boundaries flexible bollards establish, and any drivers that do bump into them are relieved not to have damaged their vehicle.

COLLAPSIBLE BOLLARDS Collapsible or “fold-down” bollards are adjustable posts that appear like any other bollard, but can be collapsed or folded down to the ground to allow vehicles to pass over top. These are typically used in parking lots or parking garages where vehicle owners want to control or block access to their parking spots, or if they want to “lock” their vehicles into place in a parking spot as a theft deterrent. A simple collapsible bollard can be inexpensive, easy to install and highly visible addition to a parking area.

Managing traffic and creating safe routes for pedestrians is paramount to the success of a business. This process starts with assessing the primary needs of the lot to determine what type of traffic bollard will be the best fit. The right traffic bollard will provide an adequate level of impact resistance for the application and compliment the surrounding architecture. Remember that a customer’s first impression of your business comes in the parking lot and the site perimeter, and effectively controlling traffic and ensuring that your customers are safe all play into this. Advertise your concern for their safety by selecting the right traffic bollard for your business. n

EDMONTON CHAPTER EVENT EDMONTON JUNE 7, 2017 Attendees began arriving at 11:00 for this luncheon / networking meeting. Given the short notice, there was very good attendance, confirming that this format is popular. The format of the event was short enough to keep engagement high and long enough to make it worth attending.

Prior to lunch, delegates participated in a meet and greet session, where networking with colleagues is always popular.

Event co-chair, Randa Kachkar then welcomed attendees to the University of Alberta, reviewed the agenda and introduced Brett Bain, Edmonton Airports. Brett Bain welcomed attendees on behalf of CPA Board of Directors.

Once lunch was done, it was down to business. Randa introduced Jeff Calibaba, CEO of Alberta Traffic Supply and chief advocate for the North American Vision Zero Advocacy. Jeff gave an interactive presentation about the Vision Zero Advocacy, its history, the work they do and its impact on traffic fatalities. He also handed out workbooks and the group worked on them together. Following that, Jeff led a question and answer period.

After a short refreshment break, Randa introduced the second speaker – Nick Trovato from RJC Engineering. Nick spoke about parking garage facility maintenance and how to identify trouble

spots. Nick brought samples of corroded steel, damaged joints, etc. and passed them around so participants could get a handson experience with the types of potential damage.

The event was quite successful and drew attendance from Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer. Brett Bain will host another event in November at the Edmonton International Airport and both Randa and Mark are committed to helping organize it with Brett.

Mark Huberman, event co-chair, closed the event with a few words and invited participants to submit topics of interest that they would like to have on a future agenda.

Overall, the attendees were pleased with the event and many commented that it was very informative.

Jeff a offert une présentation interactive du Vison Zero Advocate Institute, de son histoire, du travail qui y est accompli et de ses impacts sur les décès sur la route. Il a aussi distribué des cahiers d’exercices sur lesquels le groupe s’est penché, puis a finalement pris des questions.

Après une courte pause, Randa a présenté un second conférencier: Nick Trovado de RJC Engineering. Nick a abordé les thèmes de l’entretien des parcs de stationnement couverts et de

la manière de repérer les zones problématiques. Il a présenté des échantillons d’acier rongé par la rouille, de joints endommagés, etc., et les a fait circuler pour permettre aux participants de constater les types de dommages potentiels.

L’événement s’est révélé être un succès et a attiré des participants d’Edmonton, de Calgary et de Red Deer. Brett Bain tiendra un autre événement en novembre à l’aéroport international d’Edmonton et Randa et Mark se sont engagés à contribuer à son organisation.

Mark Huberman, coprésident de l’événement, a prononcé une brève allocution de clôture et a invité les participants à proposer des sujets d’intérêt qu’ils aimeraient voir figurer au programme dans le futur.

From waste to a useable ground reinforcement: Recycling Plastic can solve many parking issues.

We’ve suffered enough from cold-cracked, pot-holed, muddy parking lots with puddles the size of lakes. Let’s face it, the Canadian climate just isn’t very kind to concrete and asphalt.

And I won’t even mention the problems we’re dealing with when it comes to storm water runoff. It’s time for a solution, and there is one on the market made of 100% recycled plastic. Plastic has such a bad reputation, yet we still use it in so many different situations. Why not use a recycled plastic solution to solve your parking issue?

Think about the things you put in your recycling bin; ever wondered where they go once they’re loaded into the recycling truck? I’ll give you a general overview of the process that our products go through to go from waste to a useable ground reinforcement product that is used in parking lots.

Step 1:

Sortation

the contents of the recycling boxes go to a materials recovery facility (MRF), called a “murf”. There, the different types of plastic are sorted, baled, and crushed or compacted.

Processing

a recycling facility takes in the baled plastic and processes it into either a granulate or pellet. This is also the stage that colour pigment can be added to the plastic (in the case of pelletizing).

It’s important to note that not all plastics behave the same way. There is a Un Canadien fabriqué considerable amount of 'hanpave' dans une science behind creating application de useful products from fabrication canadienne plastic waste. In 2016 one company with a facility in St. Clements, ON helped divert 47,000 metric tonnes of plastic from landfill. The great thing about recycled products is that they can be recycled again at the end of their lifespan. Plastic products can be recycled up to 50 times and although the manufacturers guarantee may be 15 years, the realistic lifespan is much longer. It’s also good to know that these products can be re-made into other useful products again and again.

There are two commonly used products for parking areas. One is a square injection moulded ground reinforcement grid. Typically, they come in one-square-foot pieces and come clipped together in onemetre squares. The second option is more heavy-duty version. It is ideal for areas where transport trucks need to manoeuvre around.

Step 3:

Manufacturing

The granulate, or pellets can be mixed with other plastics to a specific “recipe” and colour called masterbatch is added to the granulate. The pellets or granulate are then shaped into a value-added product by injection or intrusion moulding.

These products are much thicker than their injection moulded counterparts. They typically have diamond shaped openings and are 8-10cm thick. The heavy-duty version has also been used in “living street” projects. Due to the large openings, they can be seeded with grass, making the area a green space. Both options are suitable for domestic use, car parking, and lightly trafficked roads. The heavyduty version can handle vehicles weighing up to 60 metric tonnes, making it ideal for transport trucks. They’re also much lighter than the traditionally used concrete product, meaning more product can be shipped on a truck and they can be installed much more quickly.

Getting back to the Canadian climate I mentioned earlier, snowplows won’t rip out the 100% recycled plastic heavy-duty ground reinforcement grids. If there’s a corner not exactly flush with the others, it will just chip it off and carry on. So much better than the familiar problem with the concrete version where the plow rips the grid out of the ground.

How’s that for standing up to our Canadian winters? Soyons réalistes : le climat canadien est rude pour le béton et pour l’asphalte, sans mentionner les problèmes associés au ruissellement des eaux pluviales. Heureusement, une solution faite entièrement de plastique recyclé est actuellement offerte sur le marché et nous sommes plus que prêts à l’accueillir. Malgré sa mauvaise réputation, il continue d’exister tellement d’applications pour le plastique, alors pourquoi ne pas utiliser du plastique recyclé pour résoudre vos problèmes de pavage?

Pensez à toutes les choses que vous jetez au recyclage; vous êtes-vous déjà demandé ce qu’elles deviennent après avoir disparu dans le camion de recyclage? Voici un aperçu du processus responsable de la transformation de déchets en notre produit de renforcement de surface destiné à être utilisé dans les stationnements.

Il est aussi intéressant de savoir que de tels produits peuvent être transformés à maintes reprises pour d’autres applications utiles.

Deux produits sont couramment utilisés dans les stationnements. Il y a d’abord les grilles de renforcement de surface carrées à fabrication injectée. Il s’agit habituellement de pièces d’un pied carré fixées les unes aux autres pour former des quadrilatères d’un mètre carré. La deuxième option est une version plus robuste que la première : elle est idéale pour les endroits où les camions de transport doivent circuler. Ces produits sont beaucoup plus épais que leurs cousins à fabrication injectée. Ils sont habituellement dotés d’ouvertures en losange et sont d’une épaisseur de 8 à 10 cm. La version robuste a aussi été utilisée dans le cadre de projets de « rues d’ambiance ».

Pour en revenir au climat canadien, les souffleurs à neige n’endommageront pas les grilles de renforcement robustes en plastique recyclé. Si un coin n’est pas bien aligné avec les autres, il sera simplement écaillé : beaucoup plus pratique que le problème habituel avec les versions en béton où le souffleur arrache complètement la grille du sol.

Avantages des stationnements couverts de panneaux solaires photovoltaïques

Les parcs de stationnement sont considérés comme des actifs par ceux qui les exploitent ou par ceux pour qui ils sont nécessaires pour attirer des clients, ou même des employés. Ils répondent principalement à un besoin : fournir des emplacements où garer les voitures, que ce soit pour une heure ou pour une journée. Et qu’en serait-il si l’on pouvait transformer ce bien meuble en actif multifonctions qui, en plus de fournir des espaces de stationnement, générerait des recettes additionnelles tout en contribuant à la préservation de l’environnement? Étonnamment, les parcs de stationnement peuvent générer de l’électricité... renouvelable, et les parcs de stationnement couverts de panneaux solaires peuvent très bien remplir ce rôle.

Pourquoi un exploitant de parc de stationnement voudrait-il produire de l’énergie renouvelable? D’immenses surfaces sont parfois asphaltées dans les grandes villes, surfaces correspondant dans certains cas à plus de 40 % du territoire; et il en va de même pour les banlieues. Les routes, auxquelles viennent s’ajouter les stationnements de surface, représentent une portion importante de cette superficie. En quoi tout cet asphalte contribue-t-il à la préservation de l’environnement si nous ne faisons qu’y garer des voitures?

Lorsque vient le temps de recenser les plus grands obstacles à l’atteinte des objectifs de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), le secteur des transports arrive en tête en Ontario : il est responsable de la plus importante tranche des émissions, soit 35 %. Pour faire face à cette réalité, le gouvernement de l’Ontario encourage les automobilistes à effectuer la transition vers les véhicules électriques en offrant des remises à l’achat allant jusqu’à 14 000 $. Le Québec et la C.-B. présentent des statistiques similaires et ont aussi adopté des mesures incitatives.

Le Programme ontarien des bornes de recharge pour véhicules électriques (BRVE) vise à améliorer l’accès aux bornes de recharge grâce à du financement pour la mise en place d’un réseau hautevitesse dans les villes, le long des autoroutes, sur les lieux de travail, dans les immeubles d’appartements et de copropriétés et dans les endroits publics partout en Ontario. L’adoption de telles mesures accroît la demande de bornes de recharge aux endroits où les véhicules se garent, qu’il s’agisse de centres commerciaux, des endroits près des bureaux, des universités et des écoles ou près des

Le nombre de véhicules électriques qui fréquenteront votre parc de stationnement dépendra de votre capacité à les accommoder sur le plan des dispositifs de recharge. Les considérations liées à l’autonomie demeurent l’une des principales raisons pourquoi beaucoup hésitent à acheter une voiture électrique; l’amélioration de la technologie et l’augmentation du nombre de bornes de recharge viendront changer cette façon de penser. Nous monterions toujours à cheval s’il n’existait qu’une poignée de stations-service ou si faire le plein d’un véhicule à combustion prenait beaucoup de temps. Très peu de propriétaires de véhicules électriques visiteront des installations s’apparentant à des stations-service s’ils doivent

attendre 15 minutes pour que les bornes de recharge les plus rapides fassent leur travail. Très peu de conducteurs font preuve de patience à l’égard des temps morts et je considérerais 15 minutes pour acheter une barre de chocolat comme un temps mort.

Les infrastructures de recharge des véhicules électriques évoluent rapidement et la plupart des recharges prendront place aux endroits où les voitures restent garées à long terme : le propriétaire se trouve ainsi déjà sur place et est occupé autrement qu’à attendre après le chargement de sa batterie. Vous pouvez recharger votre voiture lorsque vous participez à une réunion, visitez un ami à l’hôpital ou regardez votre équipe sportive préférée dans la 10e rangée (ou la 50e). Vous serez bientôt en mesure de recharger votre voiture et de contrôler l’état de la charge sur votre téléphone intelligent tout en vaquant à d’autres occupations. Les usagers des stationnements seront également disposés à payer pour la commodité de ce service.

S’ils sont propriétaires d’un véhicule électrique et doivent effectuer une recharge pour se rendre à leur prochaine destination, ils payeront pour l’emplacement de stationnement et payeront également un tarif majoré pour l’électricité. Avec l’augmentation du coût de l’électricité, les garages solaires produiront de l’énergie à un coût égal. Votre coût sera fixe, mais vos clients seront disposés à payer plus cher, comme s’ils effectuaient la recharge à la maison. Si l’on se fie aux tendances historiques des coûts de l’énergie, en plus de bientôt constituer une nécessité, les bornes de recharge pour véhicules électriques augmenteront vos revenus à un rythme constant.

L’utilisation des véhicules électriques se généralise en raison de la nécessité de réduire les émissions de GES et les abris d’auto peuvent constituer une source d’énergie importante pour leur recharge. Qu’en est-il des autres avantages des stationnements couverts de panneaux solaires? Ils peuvent contribuer à préserver l’environnement et offrir une image écoresponsable. En 2008, l’Environmental Protection Agency américaine a publié un article portant sur les îlots de chaleur urbain (ICU) 1. Une section de cet article traitait précisément des avantages d’utiliser des chaussées froides pour réduire les effets de l’asphalte ou même du béton âgé qui peuvent atteindre des températures de surface de 48 à 67oC pendant l’été.

Cet article offre un parfait exemple visuel de ces effets extrêmes sur l’asphalte et sur le béton à l’aide d’une caméra thermique utilisée en Arizona.

Ils peuvent être conçus pour s’approvisionner auprès des systèmes d’eau ménagère pour combler leurs besoins d’entretien ou même pour arroser la verdure adjacente.

Abordons maintenant un autre thème que les ICU : notre saison favorite, l’hiver. Votre parc de stationnement a-t-il déjà été enseveli sous la neige, forçant ainsi tous les usagers à consacrer un long moment à briser la glace et à dégager leurs véhicules? Les garages solaires peuvent également contribuer à mitiger de tels inconvénients. Étant protégés par des panneaux solaires, les voitures seront très peu exposées à la neige et aux autres intempéries. Ainsi, il ne sera plus nécessaire de relever les essuie-glaces ou de salir un manteau neuf en tentant de dégager un toit de camion ou de minifourgonnette.

Il existe plusieurs façons d’endiguer les ICU : utiliser des surfaces réfléchissantes ou poreuses, planter des arbres ou prendre en compte l’ombre fournie par d’autres structures lors de la conception.

Les autres structures utilisées sont habituellement des bâtiments.

De plus, dans le Sud, les abris d’auto existent depuis de nombreuses années. Cependant, une seule et unique solution jette de l’ombre sur l’asphalte et génère de l’énergie : les garages solaires. Ils deviennent plus populaires que jamais aux É.U.; autant dans le Sud que dans le Nord, mais leur utilisation demeure jusqu’à maintenant marginale au Canada. Des aménagements paysagers sont plus souvent exigés et effectués de notre côté de la frontière. Une étude publiée en 2006 s’intéressait à l’impact des forêts urbaines et des garages solaires sur les ICU 2. Il a été établi que les panneaux solaires

Choisir des sources d’énergie propre profite à tous et les coûts de production des énergies renouvelables se rapprochent de ceux des sources conventionnelles. Le sujet a aussi gagné en popularité auprès de différents échelons du gouvernement. En 2009, l’Ontario s’est engagée à fermer les centrales au charbon responsables d’importantes émissions de polluants atmosphériques. À cette époque, 19 centrales à chaudières à charbon produisaient presque

En 2003, l’Ontario produisait 7 500 mégawatts d’énergie grâce au charbon : soit 18,6 millions de tonnes métriques de combustible polluant. Les centrales au charbon constituaient la source la plus importante de substances toxiques, de métaux lourds, de soufre et de pollution atmosphérique par l’azote de cette province. En 2007, les émissions annuelles de carbone attribuables aux centrales au charbon s’élevaient à plus de 41 millions de tonnes métriques.

En 2009, le gouvernement de l’Ontario a adopté la Loi sur l’énergie verte et l’économie verte. Dix-sept nouvelles centrales au gaz naturel ont été construites; elles ont une capacité de 10 000 mégawatts et, avec l’énergie solaire, éolienne et de la biomasse, ont su remplacer la capacité de production auparavant attribuée au charbon.

L’Alberta, elle, commence tout juste à s’investir dans les énergies renouvelables. Cette province dispose d’une capacité actuelle de génération d’électricité de plus de 13 898 mégawatts, dont 41 % est attribuable au charbon et 40 % au gaz naturel. Le plan de leadership sur le climat de l’Alberta vise à améliorer la qualité de l’air en éliminant progressivement les émissions provenant des centrales au charbon d’ici 2030. Les parcs de stationnement jouent un rôle essentiel dans les bâtiments auxquels ils sont rattachés : ils font par défaut office de hall d’entrée et sont responsables de la première impression qu’offre une propriété.

Un parc de stationnement négligé offre une image repoussante et rebutante qui confère une apparence peu attrayante et peu invitante à tout le bâtiment. Plus important encore, un stationnement à l’abandon peut mettre les visiteurs et les employés ainsi que leurs véhicules en danger. En plus de nuire à une entreprise en rendant ses installations moins attrayantes aux yeux des clients potentiels, une telle situation peut mener à de coûteuses responsabilités légales si des visiteurs ou des employés se blessent ou endommagent leurs véhicules.

Pourtant, en dépit des nombreux dangers associés aux parcs de stationnement négligés ou mal entretenus, de nombreux propriétaires continuent à les traiter comme des éléments secondaires. Il s’agit en partie d’un problème de perception.

Bon nombre de propriétaires préfèrent les stationnements extérieurs aux garages, car ils croient à tort qu’ils ne nécessitent aucun entretien. Ils supposent pouvoir simplement asphalter un secteur, y peindre des lignes pour délimiter les espaces et ne plus s’en occuper.

Il est vrai que les stationnements extérieurs nécessitent normalement moins d’entretien que les garages, mais il est tout de même nécessaire de s’en occuper. Évidemment, il n’y a pas de rampes de béton, de planchers ou de colonnes de soutien à entretenir, mais la chaussée des parcs de stationnement est chaque jour hautement sollicitée par les véhicules lourds, par la pluie et la neige et même par les rayons du soleil. C’est pourquoi

il est essentiel de compter sur un plan d’entretien et d’évaluation pour préserver l’apparence de la propriété, assurer la sécurité des clients et des locataires et prolonger la vie de la chaussée.

Les chaussées peuvent être l’un des biens les plus coûteux à entretenir pour une installation commerciale, mais ces coûts peuvent être mitigés.

Il existe sept principaux types de dégâts auxquels s’expose l’asphalte et chacun d’eux peut nécessiter des réparations. La bonne nouvelle est qu’un programme d’évaluation de la chaussée, mis en œuvre par un évaluateur compétent et chevronné, peut faire en sorte que les problèmes potentiels soient détectés avant qu’ils ne requièrent de réparations majeures, permettant ainsi aux propriétaires et à leurs gestionnaires de propriétés d’économiser des milliers de dollars.

Elles apparaissent habituellement le long des joints qui sont la partie la plus faible de la chaussée et peuvent être la conséquence d’une défaillance de leur qualité ou d’une mauvaise répartition. Elles peuvent aussi indiquer que la base stabilisatrice est usée. Même si les fissures longitudinales ne constituent qu’une forme primitive de détérioration, elles peuvent ultérieurement engendrer des problèmes majeurs en permettant à la moisissure de s’infiltrer dans le béton.

La deuxième forme de détérioration souvent rencontrée correspond aux fissures transversales qui traversent la chaussée perpendiculairement aux joints longitudinaux. Les fissures transversales sont habituellement

attribuables au rétrécissement de la base stabilisatrice et associées aux impacts de faibles températures sur l’asphalte. Les fissures transversales indiquent souvent que la base stabilisatrice est également fissurée. Avec l’accroissement de l’importance et de la densité des fissures longitudinales et transversales, des motifs carrés appelés fissures polygonales font leur apparition.

Les fissures polygonales sont une série de fissures interconnectées prenant une forme rectangulaire ou carrée. Comme les fissures longitudinales, les fissures polygonales peuvent laisser la moisissure s’infiltrer dans l’asphalte et endommager la chaussée.

L’usure de surface des matériaux d’agrégat ou des liants routiers entraîne la dégradation. La dégradation correspond essentiellement à la désintégration de la surface de l’asphalte entraînant le détachement de morceaux de la chaussée.

Ce phénomène peut faire apparaître des crevasses dans la chaussée, abîmer la surface, désagréger les liants et par extension la protection contre la moisissure.

Ces quatre premiers types de détérioration indiquent la présence de problèmes, mais peuvent être traités grâce à des procédures d’entretien préventif abordables comme le scellement de fissures ou les couches de scellement. Malheureusement, de nombreux propriétaires et leurs conseillers en matière d’entretien utilisent des méthodes de reconstruction dispendieuses et dépensent des milliers de dollars en trop pour traiter des problèmes essentiellement simples et courants.

Ceci étant dit, une densité de fissures élevée et une dégradation sévère nécessitent souvent des interventions coûteuses et exigeantes. Par exemple, l’orniérage est une déformation permanente de la chaussée qui se manifeste lorsque des ornières apparaissent dans l’infrastructure de la chaussée. La formation d’ornières peut entraîner de la rétention d’eau et exposer les véhicules à de l’aquaplanage et à d’autres problèmes. Il existe deux principaux types d’orniérage : les ornières mixtes et les ornières d’infrastructure. Ce phénomène est souvent attribuable à la méthode de construction ou aux techniques de conception utilisées comme une structure de chaussée inadéquate ou un compactage insuffisant des couches de base pendant la construction. Lorsque l’infrastructure n’est plus assez solide pour supporter la chaussée, les fissures de fatigue apparaissent. Les fissures de fatigue, ou lézardes, ont l’apparence d’une peau d’alligator : soit des motifs en losanges. L’orniérage et les fissures de fatigue indiquent, en plus de la détérioration évidente de la surface, que l’asphalte est en proie à une intense corrosion. S’ils ne sont pas traités, ces problèmes peuvent amener la chaussée à s’affaisser ou à s’abaisser, ce qui entraîne la formation de nids-de-poule.

Ces formes plus avancées de détérioration exigent habituellement une forme de réparations beaucoup plus coûteuses : le fraisage et le resurfaçage. C’est pourquoi il est crucial de détecter les signes avant-coureurs et de traiter les détériorations

prématurées avant que des problèmes majeurs et beaucoup plus dispendieux ne se manifestent. Les propriétaires de parcs de stationnement et leurs employés devraient se montrer vigilants et effectuer le suivi de la condition des chaussées. Ils devraient inspecter les surfaces de manière ponctuelle et les employés devraient être formés pour reconnaître à vue les différents signes de détérioration. Dans certaines régions du Canada sujettes à un climat particulièrement rigoureux et à d’importantes fluctuations de températures, il peut s’avérer judicieux de retenir les services d’un conseiller en matière de chaussées pour effectuer le suivi de la condition de la chaussée et mettre en œuvre des mesures d’entretien avant que d’importants problèmes ne se déclarent.

Lorsque des dommages potentiellement graves se déclarent de façon apparente, il est conseillé de consulter un spécialiste avec de l’expérience en fabrication, observation et contrôle géotechnique pour la conception des chaussées et ayant des connaissances dans tous les aspects de l’ingénierie des chaussées, y compris les examens des surfaces et des infrastructures, l’évaluation des chaussées, les analyses de défaillances des structures, la conception de chaussées, les systèmes de gestion des chaussées, l’assurance de la qualité des constructions et le contrôle de la qualité. Les chaussées réagissent différemment aux différentes utilisations ainsi qu’aux différents climats. Il est important de mettre en place une stratégie exhaustive en matière d’entretien et de réparation de la chaussée qui tient compte de tous les éléments pouvant avoir un impact sur le rendement de la chaussée et sur sa durée de vie. Comment choisir le type de borne de circulation qui convient à votre entreprise

Savoir choisir une borne de stationnement adéquate pour un parc de stationnement sécuritaire

Même si elles jouent un rôle important sur les plans esthétique et sécuritaire pour presque toutes les entreprises, les bornes sont souvent négligées. D’une certaine manière, elles jouent un rôle de justicier masqué, comme dans les films de super héros : elles ne demandent jamais à être remerciées et elles protègent silencieusement les citoyens et les installations qui les entourent.

L’analogie peut sembler un tantinet dramatique, mais les bornes peuvent réellement sauver des vies et empêcher les dommages matériels. L’essentiel est de choisir le modèle qui convient à votre entreprise.

Dans sa forme la plus simple, une borne est un poteau de métal sans ornements utilisé en face des bâtiments ou dans d’autres espaces extérieurs où la circulation doit être contrôlée. Elles sont habituellement disposées de manière à ce que les véhicules de taille normale ne puissent les contourner; elles jouent donc un rôle essentiel pour les périmètres sécurisés et les parcs de stationnement.

Des bornes de différentes couleurs, hauteurs, largeurs, apparences et robustesses sont offertes. Une borne adéquate se fondra dans le décor des installations et offrira un degré de robustesse approprié pour prévenir les dommages matériels et protéger les piétons.

En temps normal, une entreprise sélectionnera différents types de bornes de contrôle de la circulation pour assurer ces fonctions dans ses installations. Les bornes de circulation jouent différents rôles : elles peuvent séparer les voitures des piétons, indiquer clairement les voies à emprunter, bloquer l’accès des voitures aux passages pour piétons, fournir une assistance visuelle à la circulation dans les aires à visibilité réduite et délimiter les zones où il est interdit de circuler.

Types de bornes de contrôle de la circulation Tout comme les bornes de contrôle, les patrons de circulation varient. Le type de borne à être choisie dépend des principales fonctions de celle-ci : diriger les automobilistes dans des zones où les patrons de circulation varient, bloquer un espace pour un événement, isoler une piste cyclable, diriger la circulation dans un parc de stationnement ou encore est-il question d’une fonction entièrement différente?

Voici quatre des bornes les plus fréquemment utilisées :

TUYAUX EN ACIER Ces bornes sont de loin les plus utilisées dans les parcs de stationnement et autour des bâtiments. Elles sont ancrées dans un substrat en béton et remplies de ciment pour fournir une résistance aux collisions avec des voitures.

C’est pourquoi elles sont souvent utilisées pour gérer la circulation et protéger les piétons et les biens des véhicules en mouvement. De nombreux fabricants vont même jusqu’à garantir la capacité de leurs bornes à arrêter les véhicules les percutant à une vitesse donnée : il s’agit de la cotation K-rating.

Ces tuyaux de métal ont un aspect très rudimentaire, mais peuvent être peinturés et dotés d’un couvercle de plastique pour accroître leur visibilité et améliorer leur apparence. Des modèles en acier inoxydable et des couverts de métal enjolivés sont aussi offerts pour les entreprises distinguées. Ces bornes sont destinées à être utilisées pour réguler la circulation lorsque l’empiétement des véhicules constitue un réel danger.

BORNES AMOVIBLES Les bornes amovibles sont robustes et ont l’apparence de bornes permanentes, mais peuvent facilement être détachées de leur socle pour faciliter l’accès des véhicules, lorsque nécessaire. Elles remplissent à merveille le rôle de repère visuel à l’intention des automobilistes, mais ne fournissent pas un niveau de résistance aux impacts suffisant pour arrêter un véhicule.

Les bornes amovibles sont utiles dans les aires où la circulation est décuplée à l’occasion d’événements majeurs, dans les zones où la circulation doit être interdite en raison de la présence d’un grand nombre de piétons ou dans les aires où seuls les véhicules autorisés peuvent circuler.

BORNES RÉTRACTABLES Quoique très semblables aux bornes amovibles, les bornes rétractables présentent plusieurs différences. Elles sont plus dispendieuses que les bornes amovibles, mais peuvent rapidement et facilement se rétracter dans des socles de béton encastrés dans le sol. Lorsqu’elles sont complètement rétractées, leurs socles se referment exactement au niveau du sol afin d’empêcher les gens de trébucher et de se blesser. Même si ces bornes n’offrent pas une grande résistance aux impacts, elles sont utiles dans beaucoup de circonstances similaires à celles pour lesquelles on fait appel aux bornes amovibles, mais ne nécessitent pas d’espace de rangement additionnel. Elles constituent souvent un choix idéal dans les aires où il est nécessaire de restreindre la circulation pour permettre le passage des véhicules d’urgence.

BORNES FLEXIBLES Les bornes flexibles sont suffisamment rigides pour avoir l’air de bornes de métal, mais sont faites de polymère de plastique.

Elles peuvent basculer sur 90 degrés en cas d’impact avec un véhicule pour ensuite reprendre leur forme originale. Ce type de bornes est particulièrement utile pour délimiter les parcs de stationnement ou les courbes où les conducteurs risquent d’effectuer involontairement des virages excessivement brusques, sauf s’ils peuvent compter sur un repère visuel comme une borne de circulation pour s’orienter. Les piétons et les propriétaires d’immeubles apprécient les délimitations claires qu’offrent les bornes flexibles et chaque chauffeur qui en percute une est soulagé de ne pas avoir endommagé son véhicule.

BORNES RABATTABLES Les bornes rabattables sont des poteaux ajustables qui ont l’apparence d’une borne normale, mais peuvent être rabattus pour permettre aux véhicules de les franchir. Elles sont habituellement utilisées dans les parcs de stationnement ou dans les parcs de stationnement couverts lorsque les propriétaires de véhicules veulent bloquer l’accès à leur emplacement ou désirent empêcher leur véhicule d’en sortir à titre de mesure antivol. Une simple borne rabattable peut se révéler abordable et facile à installer en plus de constituer un ajout manifeste à un stationnement.

Gérer la circulation et créer des voies sûres pour les piétons est essentiel au succès de toute entreprise. Ce processus commence par une évaluation des besoins de base des installations pour déterminer quel type de borne de circulation sera adéquate. Une borne adaptée fournira un niveau adéquat de protection et embellira les installations adjacentes. Il est important de ne pas oublier que le stationnement et les environs de votre propriété offrent la première impression de votre entreprise aux clients et que la gestion adéquate de la circulation et le souci de la sécurité participent à cette impression. Choisir des bornes de circulation appropriées communiquera votre souci de leur sécurité. n

Le stationnement à l’ère des véhicules autonomes PARTIE 1

Nous sommes à l’aube d’une révolution destinée à bouleverser la société, à changer l’apparence et la manière de fonctionner des villes et à transformer fondamentalement le transport des personnes et des marchandises.

On la qualifie de révolution de l’automatisation et elle sera provoquée par l’avènement des véhicules autonomes (VA) : des voitures sans conducteurs qui nécessitent très peu voire aucune intervention humaine. En plus de leurs conséquences sur les transports, les VA bouleverseront inévitablement de nombreux autres secteurs comme les assurances, les technologies, l’assistance à la conduite ainsi que tous les domaines dans lesquels des conducteurs sont employés.

Avec l’avènement de cette technologie, d’importants secteurs devront également effectuer un pivot stratégique.

Une perturbation majeure pourrait survenir sur le plan du stationnement. Parmi les autres innovations afférentes aux VA, le fait que ces derniers seront constamment en mouvement pour répondre à la demande atténuera le besoin d’emplacements de stationnement rapprochés et pratiques.

Comme Alain L. Kornhauser de l’Université de Princeton l’a mentionné au magazine en ligne Curbed : « Les stationnements situés près des endroits où les gens se rendent deviendront obsolètes. Si je me rends à une partie de football, je n’ai pas de raison de garder ma voiture avec moi. Même chose si je me rends au bureau. Le modèle actuel du centre commercial entouré d’un océan de 1 stationnements est voué à disparaître ».

Quand exactement cette révolution prendrat-elle place? Certains constructeurs automobiles affirment que les VA seront lancés autour de 2020 et de nombreux fournisseurs se concentrent d’abord sur les taxis autonomes. RethinkX, un groupe de réflexion s’intéressant aux bouleversements associés aux avancées technologiques, est d’avis que d’ici 2030, « une proportion de 95 % des distances parcourues par les voyageurs états-uniens sera imputable aux véhicules 2 électriques autonomes » . D’autres prévoient que, d’ici 2040, la majorité des citadins n’auront pas besoin de posséder de véhicule, car ils seront abonnés à un quelconque 3 service de transport sur demande . McKinsey & Company croit qu’une fois les enjeux réglementaires et technologiques résolus, jusqu’à 85 % des nouveaux véhicules vendus 4 pourraient être pleinement automatisés .

Un rapport conjoint du Conference Board du Canada et du Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence (CAVCOE) indique que les VA sont déjà présents d’une certaine manière et domineront les routes beaucoup plus tôt que ce à quoi la plupart des gens s’attendent .

Les constructeurs automobiles, ainsi que les géants de la technologie qui dirigent actuellement l’Internet, investissent massivement en prévision de la révolution

de l’automatisation. Google travaille sur une 6 voiture autonome depuis 2009 et son parc de VA a déjà parcouru plus de 3,2 M de kilomètres, en grande majorité sur les routes.

Dernièrement, Tim Cook a affirmé que Apple injectait des ressources dans la mise au point d’une technologie pour contrôler les véhicules autonomes et n’a pas écarté l’idée de concevoir son propre véhicule dans le 7 futur . Amazon s’intéresse apparemment aux manières d’utiliser les véhicules autonomes 8 pour livrer des colis . Même Facebook a fait l’objet de spéculations lorsqu’elle a enregistré les noms de domaine Facebook.

Ford, GM, Audi, BMW, Volvo et évidemment Tesla figurent parmi les grands constructeurs automobiles effectuant des investissements d’envergure dans ce qui est considéré comme 10 une course pour l’avenir des transports .

En juin dernier, General Motors a annoncé avoir terminé la production de 130 véhicules électriques d’essai de type Chevrolet Bolt équipés de sa dernière génération de technologie de conduite autonome. Ces véhicules s’ajouteront aux 50 Chevrolet Bolt autonomes de génération actuelle déjà mises à l’essai de façon sécuritaire à San Francisco, à Scottsdale, en Arizona et dans le 11 centre-ville de détroit . >

La société sans conducteurs : utopie ou dystopie?

Les avantages d’une société sans conducteurs sont énumérés dans un rapport du Conference Board du Canada et du CAVCOE datant de 2015. La sécurité serait apparemment le plus important avantage : « En remplaçant les chauffeurs, on s’attend à ce que les VA éliminent la 12 majorité des 93 % de collisions attribuables aux erreurs humaines » .

De plus, les VA favoriseront la fluidité de la circulation, ce qui devrait réduire considérablement les embouteillages voire les éliminer ainsi qu’amoindrir les impacts sur l’environnement.

Tous les scénarios d’un futur sans conducteurs ne sont cependant pas si réjouissants; beaucoup s’inquiètent des suppressions d’emplois. Les urbanistes et les experts en transports espèrent aussi que les VA ne deviendront pas des véhicules de monovoiturage qui encourageraient les gens à voyager davantage puisqu’ils n’auraient plus à conduire et feraient augmenter la circulation et l’étalement urbain.

Peu importe quel scénario se concrétisera (probablement un mélange des visions utopiques et dystopiques avec une touche d’imprévu), un élément demeure constant : le besoin pour les espaces de stationnement sera considérablement réduit. Les utilisateurs n’auront plus à stationner leurs véhicules partout où ils se rendent, car un VA sera en mesure de se relocaliser où le stationnement est gratuit ou de retourner à la maison. De plus, si les politiques publiques aident à réduire les coûts des transports en commun personnalisés, les utilisateurs seront en mesure de commander un taxi autonome qui viendra les prendre pour les déposer au bureau, à la maison ou à une 13 autre destination pour ensuite aller chercher d’autres clients.

Les experts s’entendent pour affirmer que les voitures autonomes bouleverseront le secteur du stationnement tel que nous le connaissons. Plus question d’égarer sa voiture dans un stationnement à plusieurs étages ou d’arpenter les rues à la recherche d’un espace ou encore d’attendre que les conducteurs lambins en trouvent un. Les infrastructures de stationnement dans les villes et les villages s’en trouveront donc profondément transformées.

Les véhicules Tesla sont déjà équipés de la fonction « Rappel », une fonction de stationnement autonome faisant en sorte que le véhicule quitte son emplacement ou le garage automatiquement. Le stationnement automatique fera en sorte que les humains n’auront plus à sortir des véhicules et que ces derniers pourront se garer dans des espaces beaucoup plus restreints; la largeur de 9 pi traditionnelle 14 pourrait être réduite à 7 pi ou même à 6,5 pi. Le constructeur automobile Audi estime qu’une réduction de l’espace de stationnement nécessaire de 26 % peut être réalisée grâce à une répartition de l’espace entre les VA et les véhicules conduits par des humains. Une réduction de 62 % de l’espace requis serait atteinte dans un garage 15 entièrement réservé aux VA. Jumelée à l’adoption généralisée des services de transport autonomes, l’émergence des VA pourrait réduire la demande globale de stationnements aux É.U. de 5,7 G de m2 d’ici 2035 selon Amy Korte 16 de l’agence d’architecture Arrowstreet établie à Boston.

Se préparer pour la révolution AvalonBay Communities Inc., un des plus importants promoteurs d’habitations aux ÉtatsUnis, travaille sur des plans pour un immense complexe résidentiel dans le centre-ville de Los Angeles comprenant un garage souterrain de deux étages pouvant accommoder 1 000 voitures.

On prévoit cependant un plancher plat plutôt que le traditionnel plancher incliné dans le but de pouvoir un jour convertir le garage et y installer un magasin, un gymnase ou un théâtre; en somme, il est conçu pour avoir un 17 jour une autre vocation.

Les futures infrastructures de stationnement devraient-elles être adaptées à la réduction des besoins de stationnement? Elles pourraient par exemple pouvoir accueillir des voitures tout en faisant office d’espace multifonctionnel et être intégrées au réseau de transport d’un quartier : emplacements de stationnements, connexion à une station

Les VA auront un impact sur la gouvernance urbaine ne seraitce qu’en raison de la réduction des frais de stationnement et des amendes octroyées qui influera sur les budgets. De plus, la durée de vie des principaux projets d’infrastructure sera dorénavant de 30 à 50 ans. Le Conference Board du Canada et le CAVCOE recommandent qu’une étude d’évaluation des impacts des VA approfondie soit menée pour tous les projets d’infrastructure associés au transport et au transport en commun. Force est d’admettre que ce n’est pas très commode, car les VA représentent une nouvelle technologie et que les lois, règlements et normes y afférent

La révolution de l’automatisation est à nos portes et ses conséquences ne sont pas encore connues. Bien qu’une majorité d’experts s’entende pour prédire une réduction du besoin en stationnement, certains avancent 18 que le contraire pourrait se produire. Une chose est certaine : tant et aussi longtemps que les humains devront se déplacer il y aura des véhicules et ceux-ci devront s’arrêter temps à autre. n

On June 14th, 30 attendees spanning industries from traffic control, parking software, mobile payments, universities, property management and municipalities, met at the Pacific Chapter event hosted by the City of Vancouver.

The initial roundtable “How the trend of more urban living spaces is affecting cities and parking operators” led by PaybyPhone’s Thomas Nguyen sparked some interesting comments. It was noted there has been an increase in citizens selling both private and building parking spaces. New regulations restricting residential parking spaces in apartments and condominiums have created pressures on on-street parking availability. Parklets, changes in street design to ensure intersection safety and continual construction across the lower mainland have been a major factor in changing the parking environment – removal of parking, temporary restrictions, and changing traffic routes.

Further, the value of community surveys was discussed, reflecting on the needs of neighbourhoods , local street use and their influence on parking initiatives. The clear recommendation was to engage with nearby residents, businesses, and other stakeholders when developing and implementing projects, making sure concerns and aspirations are understood and considered and the use of engagement approaches that foster constructive dialogue, unleash creativity, and inspire positive action. Addressing the doomsayers of ‘winter is coming for the parking industry’ was met with an interesting perspective that “winter is always coming” and each demographic will undoubtedly change by the time they reach the age group that would care about parking, owning a home, etc.

And of course we talked about autonomous vehicles…

The networking session was excellent - the challenge was returning to our next presenter - Dale Bracewell, Transportation Manager for the City of Vancouver who offered the group a smorgasbord of transportation topics affecting both the City and the Greater Vancouver region.

Introducing the City of Vancouver’s 2040 Transportation plan, which focusses on the Economy (supporting a thriving economy while increasing affordability; People (healthy citizens in a safe, accessible and vibrant city; and the Environment (a City that enhances its natural environment for its people and the planet, Dale explained that underpinning the plan are mobility targets of at least two-thirds of all trips to be conducted on foot, bike or transit by 2040. Statistics highlighted that, since 1997, the City has seen an increase in its downtown population by 75%, jobs increases of 26% and vehicles entering downtown reducing by 20%. Dale stated, “As we look at how we can accommodate the movement of more people and more goods we have a set of overarching goals. These are consistent with other City initiatives such as our Greener City and Healthy City Plan. “It’s about a more affordable and resilient city that can survive and even thrive in the face of rising fuel prices and climate change”.

Further topics included a high level review of TransLinks 10-Year Vision, encapsulating their future vision to welcome 1 million more people and 500,000 more jobs in the greater Vancouver region over the next 30 years. A highlight for Vancouver will be the extension of the Millennium Line Broadway Sky Train line – arguably one of the busiest transit hubs in North America. of the Greater Vancouver Urban Freight Council; plans for the False Creek Flats / East -West Arterial Planning and the Vancouver Airports (YVR 2037) Master Plan, which includes their ground transportation design and access to and from Sea Island. Vancouver has embraced Car Share (in 2014 Vancouver 1 in 5 adults were car share members and in 2016 we doubled the number of car share vehicles in the City) and the city will be focusing on mobility pricing.

Dale concluded his presentation with a snap shot of the City’s proposal for ‘Complete Streets’ which consider the needs of people of all ages & abilities regarding modes of travel, access and connectivity between the broader transportation network, creation of congestion management and road network strategies

and policies, the reallocation of transit, commercial vehicles, and general traffic flow prior to reallocating road space….
