“Grill Season is in Full Sizzle”
Ingredients
4 lb (2 kg) Beef Brisket Pot Roast
1 tsp (5 mL) Freshly ground black pepper
1 tbsp (15 mL) olive oil
1 tbsp (15 mL) dry mustard
2 tsp (10 mL) dried oregano
1 tsp (5 mL) dried sage
½ tsp (2 mL) cayenne pepper
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 piece of ginger root (1-inch/2.5 cm), minced
½ cup (125 mL) ketchup
¼ cup (50 mL) molasses
¼ cup (50 mL) red wine vinegar
¼ cup (50 mL) tomato paste
Technically, you should use a pit or home smoker to smoke beef brisket (sometimes for up to 18 hours), but it can be smoked indirectly as in this recipe, using a covered charcoal or gas grill.
Directions
Pierce roast numerous times with fork. Rub with pepper. Place in 9 x 13 inch (3.5 L) glass baking pan; set aside.
In small saucepan, heat oil over medium heat; add mustard, oregano, sage, cayenne, garlic and ginger. Cook, stirring for 4 minutes; stir in 1 cup (250 mL) water, plus remaining ingredients. Bring to boil; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat; let cool. Pour over meat; cover and refrigerate for 1 to 2 days, turning meat occasionally.
Remove meat from marinade. Boil marinade for 5 to 10 minutes; set aside. Place drip pan under grill on one side. On side without drip pan, light burner or small pile of charcoal briquettes. Preheat barbecue to low heat 225°F (110°C). Add ½-inch (1 cm) water, beer or wine to pan. Add pre-soaked hardwood chips to coals occasionally during cooking. (For gas barbecue, seal soaked chips in foil packet and poke with holes to let smoke escape; place under grill on side with lit burner).
Place roast, fat-side up, on grill over pan. Close lid. Maintain constant temperature and cook, turning every 2 hours, basting with marinade occasionally, for 5 to 6 hours, until meat thermometer inserted into middle of roast reads 150°F (65°C). Remove roast to cutting board; tent with foil for 10 minutes. Cut into thin slices across the grain. Can be served on buns with remaining marinade or barbecue sauce, horseradish and grilled vegetables.

President’s Message
Eddie Marsman
Hello everyone,
Now that calving season and bull sale season are mostly behind us, except for breeders like myself that choose to calve in May, we can now start looking ahead at growing and securing sufficient feed for next winter to keep our herds fed. I hope that the moisture situation for most of you is better than out here east of Red Deer. There is rain in the forecast for next week. Let’s hope it materializes. It is badly needed.
On a housekeeping note, your board of directors has decided to not continue with the Herdbook Group to build our new registry. As your president I don’t get to vote unless a tie breaker is needed. The board’s decision was unanimous to continue with Digital Beef, or 701X as it is now called. I personally am relieved by this decision, as the Herdbook registry turned out to be a system already in use by other breeds, and not a new system tailored to our specific needs as we were originally promised. Our CEO Sarah will discuss this in more detail in her report in this issue of Gelbvieh Guide.

Thank you Diamond Z Livestock for donating this year’s donation heifer.
I have always been of the opinion that the President’s report should not be used as a political platform, but in light of current events and what that might mean for the livestock industry I would like to lay out the situation as I see it. Whether I am correct in this or not, we can have that discussion anytime. My phone number and email are in every issue of this publication, and I welcome any discussion on this subject, or anything else one might want to talk about.
As a “new” Canadian, having lived in Alberta for almost 40 years, I haven’t felt very Canadian over the last 10 years, despite the fact that I serve on two boards of Directors whose names start with the word Canadian. This sentiment is once again amplified by the results of the latest federal election. There are many reasons why the Liberals got themselves re-elected, but the fact remains that most voters in Eastern Canada are misguided enough to vote in favor of more of the same, showing complete disdain of fellow Canadians in the West and a total ignorance of the facts. Facts like throwing Western Canadian grain farmers under the bus to save a non -existent Electric Vehicle industry in Ontario. Facts like a willingness to sacrifice the Western Canadian energy sector to combat US tariffs. Voices are getting stronger advocating Western Independence.
Yet despite all this uncertainty, cattle prices are remaining strong. I believe this is largely due to livestock producers being a strong and resilient bunch, always looking ahead and adjust as needed and face any challenge head on. Make no mistake, as all of you know, to be a successful cattle producer one has to be very focused and headstrong. And it will be these assets that will see the Gelbvieh breeder through troubled waters ahead.
The future is uncertain, but what is certain is that we will breed Gelbvieh!

50 years ago, a group of breeders met in Weyburn,SK and organized a meeting and formed the Sask-Man Gelbvieh Association. Years later the name got changed to the current name, Man-Sask Gelbvieh Association. The association has grown from the original 21 members. We have seen the breed improve, and become the 5th largest breed in Canada. We continue to move forward and hope to see you at some of the celebrations we will host this fall.
Many of you are seeding and breeding cows. Some are desperately praying for rain and fighting fires. Cattle prices remain high and Bull Sales went well this past spring. We encourage you to attend Agribition as we will host the National Gelbvieh & Balancer show. We are always looking for volunteers and sponsors.
This year our donation heifer is donated by Diamond Z Livestock. Thank you to the Zalinko family for your generosity.
Breed tokens are being sent to the 4-H clubs. Please send Maureen Tubman your results. We would love to see your pictures. Champion and Reserve club and regional winners receive cash prizes.

Hope to see you all at the Canadian Junior Gelbvieh weekend and Canadian Gelbvieh AGM in Swift Current July 24-26.
It’s More Than Just A Competition
Words by Colt Hrebeniuk
This year marked my first time attending the Saskatchewan Beef Expo in Saskatoon, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. As a 16-year-old 4-H member, I’ve been working hard with my cattle all year, and getting the opportunity to take part in such a well-organized and respected event was both exciting and rewarding. I brought my steer, Chief, and my heifer, Miss Maple, to the cattle show.
The Beef Expo is more than just a competition—it’s a place to learn, grow, and connect with others who share the same passion. One of the highlights of the Expo for me was participating in Kirk Stierwalt’s clinic. Kirk is well known in the cattle world, and for good reason. This was actually the second time I’ve had the chance to learn from him, and once again, he didn’t disappoint. Kirk has a natural way of teaching and is excellent at showing us the tips and tricks to fitting, grooming, and showing cattle properly. His demonstrations are clear and packed with useful advice that I know I’ll carry with me into future shows.
What stood out most at the Expo was the quality of cattle present—top-notch 4-H animals from all over Saskatchewan.
It was inspiring to see the work my fellow members have put into their projects. There’s something really motivating about being surrounded by people who are just as passionate and dedicated as you are. The facilities at Prairieland Park were top-class. Everything was clean, organized, and easy to navigate. The staff there were incredibly kind and accommodating, always ready to lend a hand or answer any questions. That welcoming atmosphere extended beyond the staff. One of the best parts of the Expo was getting to see old friends and make new ones. Even though we’re technically competing, everyone is always willing to help each other out. Whether it’s sharing supplies, giving feedback, or helping someone calm a nervous steer, there’s a real sense of community. What I appreciated most was how supportive the learning environment was. Everyone—whether it was Kirk, the judges, cattle producers, or fellow 4-H members—offered constructive feedback. I took notes on what I need to improve for next time and what things I did well and should continue doing. That kind of guidance is invaluable and something I’ll take seriously as I continue in 4-H.
This experience confirmed for me how much I love working with cattle and being a part of the 4-H program. I always put in the effort when it comes to my animals, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I know I still have a lot to learn, but events like the Beef Expo push me to be better. I’m going to keep at it—learning, improving, and enjoying every step of the journey.
Words by Amber & Rebecca Spray Amber and Rebecca Spray attended the Saskatchewan Beef Expo on April 11-13 in Saskatoon showcasing their Gelbvieh heifers. The weekend boasted many learning opportunities with Kirk Steirwalt doing live and hands-on clipping and
hands-on clinic where Kirk would give pointers and instruction on clipping and grooming. Kirk also did a showmanship demonstration showing what he looked for in showmanship and pointers to make you stand out. He later judged the showmanship classes. The final part of the weekend included the cattle show. Amber placed 3rd in her ORB split with BJS Miss Fancy 35M and Rebecca placed 4th in her split with RPS Ebony Rose 62M. Overall the girls had a fun weekend visiting with friends and improving their showing skills.
Thank you to Priarielands Park who donated a heifer entry and steer entry to the show and one on one time with Kirk as a Junior photo contest prize.

The Magic of Possibility: How Passion, Action, and Mindset Build Success in Purebred Cattle Operations
Words by Jackie Payne, Greenwood Cattle & GROW Your Life Co-Founder
What if the biggest limiter in your cattle business wasn’t your land base, your genetics, or your marketing strategy—but your mind?
In the world of purebred cattle, we pride ourselves on grit, tradition, and vision. We work long hours in weather that doesn’t always cooperate, betting on the potential of calves not yet born. We breed with purpose, show with intention, and sell with pride. But behind every successful operation isn’t just good cattle—it’s someone with unwavering belief, bold action, and a passion that runs deep.
Here’s the truth: the purebred cattle industry isn’t for the faint of heart. It demands big dreams and even bigger resilience.
But when you mix passion with focused action— and back it with the power of your mind—you create something few people talk about in agriculture: pure magic.
Passion: The Fire That Fuels the Dream
Every great cattle operation starts with passion. It’s the fire that keeps you up late during calving season, or pushes you to get on the road for another jackpot show or sale. Passion is what makes you run your hand over a heifer’s back and imagine the next generation she could raise.
Passion is why we do it—but it can’t stand alone. If passion is the spark, action is the fuel.
So many producers have vision. They want to build a high-quality cow herd. They want to have a successful bull sale. They want to raise cattle that compete in the ring or go on to breed champions. But the ones who make it happen? They take action—even when others doubt them.
Action: Doing the Work Even When It’s Hard
Dreams don’t build fences. Passion doesn’t sort the keepers from the culls. The real progress comes when you take the steps—day in and day out—to move closer to your goals.
Sometimes, that action looks like making a hard culling decision. Sometimes it’s investing in semen or embryos that stretch your budget. Sometimes it’s driving through the night to a sale, or booking a stall at a show where no one knows your prefix yet. It can feel scary. But when your action aligns with your passion, something shifts.
One small action leads to another. Momentum builds. And all of a sudden, you realize you’ve moved the needle.
And that’s where mindset comes in—because without the belief that you can, you’ll stall.
The Mind: The Hidden Engine of Success
This might be the part that surprises you. We don’t talk about mindset much in agriculture. But it is everything.
Your mindset is what lets you believe you can compete—even when you’re a smaller breeder up against big names. It’s what keeps you grounded when sales don’t go as planned. It’s what gives you the courage to say no to things that don’t align with your vision, even when others say you’re missing out. And sometimes, strengthening that mindset means investing in yourself—whether that’s taking a course to sharpen your skills or learning from a mentor who’s already walked the path. Growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you decide you’re worth betting on.
Because here’s the deal: your thoughts shape your outcomes. If you believe something is possible—even if it feels wild or out of reach—your mind starts to look for evidence, seek solutions, build connections, and find the courage to take action. But if you constantly tell yourself, “I could never do that,” or
“people like me don’t succeed like that,” then your actions will follow—and you’ll stay stuck.
There is real power in believing in the limitless.
Not in a fluffy, pie-in-the-sky way, but in the grounded belief that your goals are worthy, and that you can create success— even if no one around you is doing it the same way.
Boundaries: Protecting the Dream
Building something meaningful—especially in an industry as passionate and personal as purebred cattle—takes focus, clarity, and heart. It’s easy to get pulled in a hundred directions or feel like you need to do it all yourself. But protecting your vision isn’t about shutting others out—it’s about intentionally choosing where your energy goes. Give yourself permission to ask for help, delegate the tasks that don’t require you , and make space for what truly moves your dream forward. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision, even if they don’t fully understand it yet. The right support system won’t just help carry the load—they’ll cheer you on while you build something extraordinary. You don’t have to do it all to create something big—you
Magic: When Passion, Action, and Belief Collide
When you allow yourself to believe in something big, take aligned action, and fiercely protect your mindset, something powerful happens. You create magic.
Magic looks like watching your bull calf grow into a herdsire that changes your entire program.
Magic looks like someone calling to ask if they can book the first pick of your heifers before you’ve even posted your sale.
Magic looks like bringing your daughter into the ring with a calf you both believed in—and watching them both shine.
But none of that magic happens by accident. It happens because you decided. You believed. You acted. And you didn’t quit.
For the Dreamers in the Stalls
If you’re reading this and you’ve got a vision that feels big— maybe even too big—I want you to know something: You’re not crazy. You’re not too ambitious. You’re not out of your league.
You’re exactly where you need to be.
Every successful breeder, every well-known prefix, every legendary cow family started somewhere—with someone who had the courage to believe in something more.
So let yourself dream. Then write it down. Take one small step today. Invest in your belief. Surround yourself with people who support you. And when someone tries to talk you out of it, smile kindly—and do it anyway.
Final Thoughts: The Legacy We Build
At the end of the day, the purebred cattle industry isn’t just about cows. It’s about people. It’s about legacy. It’s about building something that matters—something your kids, your grandkids, and the next generation of cattle producers can look up to and be inspired by. When we chase bold goals with passion and purpose, we don’t just leave behind great cattle— we leave behind the courage to dream, to believe, and to act.
We show the future dreamers—whether they find their spark in the show ring, the calving barn, or a vision all their own— that what we build with our hearts and hands can ripple through generations.
When you lead with passion, take bold action, and allow your mind to believe in limitless possibilities, you’re not just raising cattle. You’re creating something sacred.
And that? That’s where the real magic lives.

TWIN VIEW LIVESTOCK
2024 ManSask Purebred Breeder of the Year
The ManSask Gelbvieh Association congratulates Aaron Birch and Joe Barnett of Twin View Livestock on being recognized as 2024 Purebred Breeder of the year.
Aaron grew up on his family’s farm near Lomond, AB where he was active in 4-H, junior Gelbvieh programs, and sports. He earned a diploma in Agriculture Production and Management at Olds College, then returned to the family farm to work with his family at Twin Bridge Farms. The Birch family began exploring the Gelbvieh breed as a cross for their commercial cowherd before purchasing a group of females in 2000 from Albert Carlson at Carlson Gelbvieh. Aaron’s passion for Gelbvieh history, pedigrees, and genetics was invaluable as they started their own seedstock operation. Aaron served on the Canadian Junior Gelbvieh Association, director and president of the Gelbvieh Association of AB/BC and director and president of the Canadian Gelbvieh Association.
Joe grew up near Moose Jaw, SK on a farm with commercial Simmental cattle. Joe attended the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota completing a degree in education. He taught special education in Gillette, Wyoming for two years before returning to Canada. In 1994 Joe and his brothers created City View Simmentals through their collective acquisition of 4-H heifers each year. City View Simmentals continues today with a successful annual bull sale and sale of select females. Joe served as president of the Saskatchewan Young Canadian Simmentalers, an adult advisor to the Alberta Junior Angus Association and later as director and president of the ManSask Gelbvieh Association.
In 2017 a location in south central Saskatchewan was selected and Twin View Livestock was created by combining the ‘Twin’ from Twin Bridge Farms and the ‘View’ from City View Simmentals. Six miles off the number one highway near Parkbeg, SK along the Missouri Coteau, beautiful rolling hills are home to 140 mother cows. Approximately 3/4 of the herd is registered cows and the other 1/4 are commercial females used as embryo recipients. Aaron and Joe are proponents of A.I. and embryo transfer as it has helped them accelerate their progressive seedstock breeding program.
“Our aggressive AI and ET program allows us to rapidly propagate our most select genetics. We are able to integrate bulls to a greater extent than natural means would allow.”
As with any new farm, setting up the operation takes time and effort. Hosting the ManSask field day in 2018, 12 months after moving in, was ambitious but it made for a great deadline to complete many tasks. When selecting their farm Aaron and Joe said, “It either had to be move in ready for us or for the cows. This spot was ready for us.” Aaron and Joe set up their handling and corral systems around central pens that larger corrals funnel into. This allows them to work cattle with no additional workforce. They also use as many portable panels as possible. This allows them flexibility in
selected for the sale are managed and prepared as a group at Twin View once they have passed a rigid selection process including a complete DNA profile, visual and genetic appraisal with emphasis on feet and udder quality. On the bull side, Twin View offers their bulls at an annual spring bull sale on the farm with 2025 marking their 20th year of selling bulls.
One of their most firm beliefs is the importance of offering their time and skills to enhance the position of the breed as a whole rather than just their own program. Aaron has dedicated countless volunteer hours to the Canadian People’s Choice Bull Futurity, a highlight event where many Gelbvieh breeders take the opportunity to showcase their genetics. A great deal of time is put into ensuring the bulls meet requirements for the Futurity, prizes are in place for members, and exhibitors can display their bulls at the event with participants from Canada, the United States and Australia.
Aaron and Joe have given enormous amounts of time and knowledge to be a major driver for the Canadian Gelbvieh Junior program. They consider junior enthusiasts as if they were their own children, going above and beyond to assist and mentor the future breeders of Gelbvieh. Several families have become Gelbvieh breeders due to the positive experiences in the junior program and they specifically mention Aaron and Joe as key supporters.
“We know when the breed succeeds and is seen in a positive light, we all win. It is the responsibility of each individual Gelbvieh breeder to work towards the greater good.”
Enhancing Exposure to the Commercial Industry and Promoting Youth Involvement
Words by Aspen Blake
The Gelbvieh breed has undergone substantial growth and adaptation over the last 175 years to become the prosperous breed that it is today. The Gelbvieh breed began in Germany, fulfilling the need for milk and meat production, as well as draft. Today, in Canada, Gelbvieh is one of the most versatile breeds. By cross-breeding with Gelbvieh influence, commercial producers have achieved improved growth rates and carcass weights, amplified milk production, and earlier sexual maturity allowing for more efficient production.
The cattle industry is evolving as producers continue to work with experts to develop profitable and sustainable production systems. As the industry develops, the Gelbvieh breed must keep up and this can be achieved by bridging the gap between the commercial and seedstock sectors. Building relationships, creating opportunities for youth to develop skills, properly educating producers, and utilizing creative marketing practices are all crucial to the long-term success of the breed.
Gelbvieh cattle are unique and highly regarded for their maternal traits, growth efficiency, early puberty, fertility, and longevity. The combination of genetic advantages of Gelbvieh cattle provide them with a one of a kind marketing advantage. Consistency and thorough management allow purebred producers to support their product while improving their bottom line.
Tracking performance and production data accurately is vital to building relationships with commercial producers. Customer results and feedback are also an important tool that allows the producer to understand how their genetics work in systems with different management methods and alter their breeding choices accordingly.
Genomic technologies are an additional tool that can be brought into purebred operations to gain credibility.
Trust is not only built on results and data, but also on honest conversations in real world settings. Field days, cattle shows, and other industry events can provide this opportunity, allowing relationships to be built. This often leads to future business opportunities. Collaborative efforts, such as offering buyback programs or marketing assistance for Gelbvieh-sired calves may further incentivize commercial producers to adopt the breed. It is especially important, not only in the Gelbvieh breed but for all purebred producers to stand behind their product. By offering continued support after the sale; whether it be through assistance with bull selection, breeding strategies, or marketing offspring, seedstock producers are able to establish trust and loyalty that encourages long-term use of Gelbvieh genetics. It is also essential that buyers receive appropriate support when issues arise that could have been prevented or managed by the breeder.
While influencing today’s commercial cattlemen is vital,
investing in youth is equally important to sustain the breed’s future. Organizations such as the Canadian Junior Gelbvieh Association (CJGA) provide a platform to introduce youth to the breed, but purebred producers play a central role in making those connections.
One impactful strategy is supporting youth through sponsorship and mentorship. The Canadian Junior Gelbvieh Show provides this opportunity with seminars and the chance to learn from experienced members in a fun, inclusive, and educational environment. An incentive at the Canadian Junior Gelbvieh Show that encourages youth to begin their own herds is the Bred and Owned Class. Cattle in this class are required to be registered under the junior’s name and with their personal tattoo. These experiences have built lasting breed loyalty and involvement that extends into adulthood. Producers can encourage youth involvement by sponsoring Gelbvieh shows or individual classes. Additionally, creating work experience opportunities on registered Gelbvieh operations or at industry events can expose young people to real-world experience in seedstock management.
Another often-overlooked tool is the use of social media and digital creative marketing. Youth today are highly engaged on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Sharing stories of successful youth projects, advertising youth events, highlighting data behind Gelbvieh genetics, or showcasing a day-in-the life can inspire the next generation to get involved. Producers who connect with schools and 4-H clubs may also
have an opportunity to amplify their impact by creating more personal interactions that inspire further interest.
For purebred Gelbvieh producers, the mission to expand the breed’s role in commercial operations and build youth engagement is not only achievable but necessary for long-term, sustainable success. By showcasing the breed’s economic advantages, building lasting relationships with commercial cattlemen, and supporting youth through education and opportunity, Gelbvieh can secure a stronger position in the cattle industry. With dedication, collaboration, and innovation, the Gelbvieh breed can continue to thrive across generations and cattle operations across the country.
KOZIAK LAND & CATTLE
GAABC Purebred Breeder Of The Year 2024
Words by Gail Anderson
The GAA/BC Gelbvieh Association congratulates Olivia, Chad Koziak & family on being recognized as the 2024 Purebred Breeder of the Year.
Olivia’s grandparents, John and Jean Milne, along with associates, were one of the first to import Gelbvieh genetics into Canada in the early 1970’s. This famous fullblood bull from Germany was named CGA #4 Canadian Pioneer! The Milnes developed an amazing purebred program in Fairview, Alberta, called Dunvegan Cattle Company and promoted this new exotic breed - Gelbvieh.
To this day, Olivia’s parents, Bev and Harold Milne, still produce and market purebred Gelbvieh genetics in the Peace Country, first under Gelford Cattle Company’s name, and today they are known as Milne’s Gelbvieh to keep the Milne tradition alive! Surviving BSE in the early 2000s was difficult, and the Gelbvieh breed’s profitability certainly played a significant role at that time.
At the tender young age of seven, Olivia started showing market steers, and then she began building her own herd with DCC Helga 15K (Ginger). She showcased Gelbvieh throughout her 4-H years and dominated the show ring both in 4-H and in Junior shows. In 2006 Olivia was one of 30 participants in the first CNJGA Show at V&V Farms in Redcliff, AB. Four more Junior Shows were organized in the following years. In 2022 the Gelbvieh breed wished to celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a Junior Show and Banquet in Stettler, Alberta. Olivia and Darrell Hickman, as members of the GAA/BC Board, along with Aaron Birch, Joe Barnett, Jessica Pearson and Krista Anderson, spearheaded the 50th Anniversary Celebration & Junior Show, where 41 junior members attended. This Junior show is in its 4th year, rotating between Stettler, AB and Swift Current, SK. Last year, there were 61 juniors who participated in the show.
After high school, Olivia moved to Vermilion to attend Lakeland College, where she met Chad Koziak, and it was an instant connection. Chad is a fourth-generation grain farmer whose family raised commercial cattle for three generations. This was a perfect match – a third-generation Gelbvieh Breeder and an amazing young man who was also deeply entrenched in farming.
“We believe in a low-maintenance herd, which means focusing heavily on calving ease and maternal ability. This means that the cows should work for us, not we work for the cows. Calving can be a stressful time of year for both the cows and the breeder, and focusing on calving ease helps lower the stress right at the start, giving the calves the best opportunity to start their growth. While remembering we are a performance breed, we strive to provide those cows with all the tools to do their jobs, raising those calves to weaning.”
DCC Helga 15K with ORM Excalibur 158N
The young couple got married in 2016, started having children and began establishing a purebred herd of Gelbvieh with Olivia’s cows, and they purchased 10 cows on shares from Milne’s Gelbvieh. Situated in Star, Alberta (80 kilometers northeast of Edmonton), the Koziaks run 85 head of purebred females and 40 head of commercial females bred to Gelbvieh. On the grain side of the operation, they seed about 2500 acres of canola, barley, wheat, and corn, working alongside Chad’s parents, Larry and Colleen Koziak. In 2018 they were ready to enter two heifer calves in the Wish List Sale in Red Deer. They finally made their debut in the show world at Farmfair International in 2019, and then yearly by showcasing their Wish List heifers as well as helping with the show. ‘We are whole herd DNA verified and run a complete herd health program. We like being able to provide quality genetic information to our customers to help them make their selection.’
Olivia has been the Secretary of the GAA/BC for one year, Treasurer for 2 years and is now the President along with the Junior Incentive Program as one of her special duties. Chad has fully embraced Olivia’s passion for the Gelbvieh breed and participates and helps at all events as well as chasing 3 little girls around. Both Chad and Olivia are very involved in the Junior Shows in both Stettler & Swift Current and all of
their girls (Sophia, Kayla and Madison ages 2-6) will be some of our 4th generation Gelbvieh breeders and they have already participated in the first 3 Junior Shows with the youngest one being 18 months old. They are truly excited to raise their girls within the Gelbvieh family.
“Another very important aspect we focus on is temperament. Our young family who are at our sides working in the pens year round means docility is a very important trait within our cow herd.”
The Koziak’s are dedicated to participating in the Wish List Sale and are trying to get to Farmfair on an annual basis. They wish to say thank you to the breeders who nominated them for Purebred Breeder of the Year, and they feel honoured to be among those who have been nominated before them. They believe that it takes a village to organize and execute the events throughout the year and they are only a small part of that village.
This enthusiastic and energetic couple are a real asset to our Gelbvieh breed.
“For this family, Gelbvieh is not only our chosen breed, it is our family history!”

Competition Outcomes
COW CAMP - This fun learning experience is open to members 5 years and younger. Crafts, games, snacks and showmanship will be included. Bring a paint shirt! Members may bring their own calf for showmanship and to enter in CLASS I of the conformation show as well as open conformation classes at the families discretion. The fee for Cow Camp and CLASS I is included in the $80 participant fee. Entry into other conformation classes is additional. Cow Campers are not required to bring an animal to participate.
RANCH SKILLS - Tackling practical and not so practical challenges will set you apart! Every day on the farm is a little different than the one before. Sometimes you just never know what might pop up or what you need to pull together.
MARKETING MASTERS - Polish up your promotional skills!
A)Pee Wee & Junior - You are an ad designer and it’s your job to create a poster for your local auction mart. What can the Gelbvieh breed add to a commercial program? Be sure to include the CGA website where people can go for more information. Must be on 22” x 28” poster paper and ready to hand in at registration.
B)Intermediate & Senior - Get your microphone out! You are a podcast host set to interview someone in the beef sector about the positive attributes of Gelbvieh cattle OR what Gelbvieh can do to improve breed marketing. Think outside the box - your local auctioneer, feed rep, sales management, butcher. Your only constraint is time - 5-7 minutes for Intermediate and 8-10 minutes for Seniors and in a shareable MP3 or MP4 format when you arrive at the show.
Show Day Hustle - Grooming and Showmanship team up for the ultimate show day competition!
A)Pee Wee - You and your team will work together to fit an animal. Showmanship will follow.
B)Junior - You will have 15 minutes to fit your animal then it’s off to the show! Time will stop for 5 minutes to get to the ring and get ready before your showmanship class. You can have an assistant to help move from the fitting area to the showring. Points are earned in both so even though the clock has stopped the competition rolls on!
B)Intermediate & Senior - Time waits for no one! Your showmanship class starts 30 minutes after your grooming clock starts. Plan your work so you and your animal are to the ring on time both looking the part. Points are earned in both competitions. The show waits for no one!
Judging Challenge - Earn your way to the ring!
Oral Reasons - All competitors in all age groups will hear a short demonstration on judging heifers then have the chance to sort them before giving oral reasons.
Written Reasons - All competitors in all age groups will judge a mystery class and hand in a written set of reasons. Writer’s will be available. Please state at registration if you require support.
Show Team Judging - Based on their total score from oral and written reasons the top 4 contestants in each age category will be randomly paired to compete in show team judging. One team member will judge and the other member will be the ring person. The ring is yours!
