Like the licensing examinations in other countries around the world, the questions are very diverse. Passing the exam proves that students have studied and learned what they need to know to practice medicine. The SMLE exam covers several topics, and you can learn more about these below. Medicine Much of the SMLE covers topics based on generalized and specialized medicine. These questions may be very specific and focus on things like abnormal ECGs or overdoses on over-the-counter medicines, but they may also be quite broad and focus on a specialty of medicine. Some of the specialties covered in the SMLE Medicine topic include oncology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, and much, much more. Pediatrics Some of the questions on the SMLE are directly related to pediatrics, which is the term used to describe medical care given to children. The Pediatrics topic covers a variety of different questions related to healthcare, including questions that prove you know how to diagnose and treat many different conditions. Students will find questions about everything from the Apgar score, which is used to rate the health of a newborn, to childhood bullying, which can have a tremendous impact on the wellbeing of a child. Gynecology refers to the care of the female reproductive and pelvic organs while obstetrics refers to fertility, pregnancy, and newborn care. Students will find questions related to infertility, menstruation, Caesarean section delivery, placental abruption, abortion, preterm labor, and more.
