For a few months each year, east central Alberta is home to a wide variety of interesting birds which visit the area to mate, breed and fledge their young. Tree swallows, like many species, often make the long migration journey from Central or South America and, for reasons and logistics not completely understood, seek out their exact birth location or previous nesting site. Such is likely the case with the bird photographed near Camrose. Despite potential new accommodations being available just inches away, this female swallow has chosen this delapidated nest box to raise this year’s chicks. The tired old box provides dry safety for the four nestlings. The parents work tirelessly from sunrise to sunset catching insects on the fly to feed directly into the mouths of their offspring.
