Farming Out Loud event By Murray Green

BASF held a Knowledge Harvest event at the Camrose Regional Exhibition on March 7 to pass information on to producers. “The industry is evolving and we are faced with many challenges outside of agriculture, such as climate change, demographics, increasing social and political pressure,” said Jeff Bertholet, BASF technical development manager. “We are so fortunate to be in an industry that is vital to life. As growers, you are producing food and we think there is no more noble profession than that. Today’s population is about seven billion people and by 2040, it is expected to be nine billion,” Bertholet explained. “That is not that far away, but that is another two billion people to feed. The question is: is food production going to keep pace with the growing population?” The company is developing solutions for growers and partnering with them to help them achieve success. Knowledge Harvest is a series of events hosted by BASF where growers, retailers and industry experts can connect and share information, ideas and experiences, and gather the knowledge needed to make the growing season a success. “In Canada, we are lucky. We are fortunate to have one of the lowest prices for food in the world. We spend about 10 per cent of our income on food and we have an abundant food

supply. We think science and technology equates to sustainability. The more food we can produce on the existing land we have, the safer it is on the environment,” said Bertholet. Knowledge Harvest also provides an opportunity to recognize the agriculture industry and the people who make it successful. “It is important to develop new crop solutions going forward. About 34 per cent of our money is spent on R and D (research and development). In Canada, we use our share of that money working together with you (producers) to develop solutions,” he added. “We are producing about $8 billion more in crops to feed that growing population than we would without those kinds of tools.” Since its inception in 2014, Knowledge Harvest events have focused on a theme, which guides the event and ensures guest speakers and topics are timely and relevant. The theme for Knowledge Harvest 2017 is Farming Out Loud, which speaks to an unabashed pride in producing the food that feeds Canadians and people around the world. Farming Out Loud also encourages collaboration, and sharing knowledge on innovative technology that is shaping the future of plant science in Canada. “By partnering with companies such as BASF, we become stewards of the land for future generations.
