Edward Thompson September 25, 1926 – November 18, 2013 Edward Irving Thompson was born on his father’s 40th birthday – September 25, 1926. His father, Ingvald (Ed), had left Norway in 1903 and established a farm eight miles southwest of Viking. Ed was united in marriage to a neighbor girl, Odelia Holmberg. The Holmberg family had immigrated to the Viking district in 1906 from Whiterock, South Dakota. Ed and Odelia had six children: Eddie, an older sister Alice, and two younger sisters Stella and Agnes. Eddie also had an older brother Ernest, and younger brother Gordon, who both died in infancy. Eddie completed grade nine at Alice Hill School. He worked with his father on the farm and attended Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute during the winter of 1944. The following year, he attended Olds Agricultural School. He took a second year of agricultural studies at the Vermilion School of Agriculture from 1946 to 1947. After his father’s death in 1947, he became a full-time farmer for 25 years. On August 15, 1953 Eddie married Ella Loken. They had three children Noella Joy (1954), Karen Odell (1956) and James Edward (1958). While living in Viking, Eddie and Ella were active member of Golden Valley Lutheran Church, The Farmer’s Union and the Canadian Commonwealth Federation Party. Eddie was a candidate in the 1959 and 1963 provincial elections. In 1969, Eddie began working at the Killam Auxiliary Hospital during the winter months. It was eventually decided to rent out the farm in 1972 and he began full-time work in Camrose. He worked at Bethany Nursing Home for 13 years as an orderly, while Ella worked for 13 years at Rosehaven Care Centre as a social worker. During this time, they were involved at Messiah Lutheran Church, taking part in MCF and a variety of Bible studies. The family enjoyed uplifting experiences at CLBI and HLLBC over the years. James returned to the family farm in 1982, so Eddie’s retirement in 1985 involved helping out on the farm, traveling with Mom on many exciting trips and enjoying family gatherings. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Ella; daughters Noella and Karen (Knute); son James (Corinne); six grandchildren Parker (Alexandra), Willow, Clark (Maddy), Austen (Nicole), Anna and Siri; and one great-granddaughter Ella Kathryn Thompson. A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose, Alberta. Memorial donations may be made to CLBI or the Hastings Lake Lutheran Bible Camp.
Robert “Rob” Kenneth Robbins January 22, 1940 – November 18, 2013 Robert “Bob” Kenneth Robbins was born on January 22, 1940 to Alex and Frances Robbins in Moose Jaw, SK. He moved to Strome, AB at one year of age along with his parents and grandparents. He never did like school, so he began working for farmers at a young age. His biggest interest was baseball, and he began playing senior baseball at 13 years old. This was his greatest love. He loved his sports including baseball, hockey, curling, boating, hunting and skidooing. Dancing was something he loved to do and that’s where he met the love of his life. He married Doreen Larson on February 16, 1962 and to their union were born three children Brenda, Duane and Gail. As a family, most weekends were spent at ball diamonds. Bob worked on the farm for George Borgel for several years, then moved to Round Hill for three years until moving to his own farm north of Daysland. He then sold the farm and moved to Daysland in 1976. He worked for the town for several years as town foreman, then at Manalta Coal Mine and the County of Flagstaff. Because of his love for farming, he began working for Jack Moser. He spent 20 years with Jack and enjoyed operating the large equipment. In 2000, Bob and Doreen started doing the maintenance at Providence Place. In 2008, Bob had a heart attack, and was unable to continue working at Providence Place. It was at that time that Bob retired. Bob’s greatest love was being with his family, and especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In March, Bob’s battle with cancer began and he was looked after in a hospital bed at home, and passed away at home with his family which was his wish. He is survived by his wife Doreen; three children Brenda (Mike), Duane (Brenda) and Gail (Joe); eight grandchildren Chris (Amanda), Shawn (Jody), Danielle (Ben), Terri-Lynn, Chantelle (Jordan), Brittany, Ryon and Shelby; four great-grandchildren Taylor, Adriene, Nolan and Alayna; brother Gordon (Rhoda); sister-in-law Gail; brother-in-law Lee; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins and one special Aunt Dorothy. Bob was predeceased by his parents; one brother Garry; and one sister Judy. We love you, Bob, and know that you are at peace now with no more suffering. A Funeral Service was held 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from Daysland Community Hall with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Providence Place, S.T.A.R.S, or to the charity of one’s choice.
