Animal control examined by County Continued from page 21

Option three would be to sign a new contract with Old MacDonald Kennels. They would have two patrols a month from March 1 to Oct. 31 at a cost of $85 per patrol ($170 per month) and one patrol a month from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28 at a cost of $85 per patrol. Approximate annual fee for just patrols (not including seized, impounded animals or special patrols would be $1,700. Option four would be to sign a new contract with Old MacDonald Kennels with increased patrol of six patrols a month from March 1 to Oct. 31 at a cost of $85 per patrol ($510 per month) and four patrols a month from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28 at a cost of $85 per patrol ($340 per month). Approximate annual fee for just patrols (not including seized, impounded animals or special patrols would be $5,440. "Option five would be for Camrose County to create a new position and hire its own bylaw

enforcement officer and share a kennel with the City of Camrose," said officer Mike. "However, no kennels are available at this time in the Camrose area. We could possibly work with the city in the future to come up with a solution to the lack of animal kennels or pounds. Option six would be that Camrose County create a new position for its own bylaw enforcement officer and utilize Old MacDonald Kennels. It still would be $25 per night boarding fee. Initial costs to hire a full-time bylaw enforcement officer is a salary of $42,500 to $61,000 plus benefits, uniforms $1,000, personal equipment of dog spray and animal pole $200, and light bar $2,500. Other costs such as radio/ GPS, vehicle decals, canopy and cages would be added. "Hiring a full-time bylaw officer would not only be a benefit for dog control, but also for other county bylaws. Nuisance property complaints are increasing every year and consuming

a lot of our peace officer's time and efforts," said officer Mike. "Protective services is also receiving a lot of parking complaints from residences down at Pelican Point. This bylaw officer would be able to enforce all county bylaws, while at the same time, alleviate some of the workload from our current peace officers to allow them to conduct more traffic related duties and enforcement." This new bylaw officer position will also be a benefit to the county ratepayers. "More complaints and concerns are voiced by county residents every year, which makes it difficult for officers to respond and investigate each complaint in a suitable time frame. As the protective services department gets busier, the need for more man power increases. This position will enable protective services better to serve the ratepayers in a more timely and effective manner," said officer Mike. The item was deferred to the budget process.
