AMA says thanks to school patrollers

‘Call from Shannon was a blessing’ Jaimie Griffiths was working on getting her family back on track after a devastating fire destroyed their home at Dried Meat Lake. All was lost. So when Shannon (Cobblers owner) called to say Jaimie had won a $1,000 shopping spree, it was a ray of sunshine. She spent four fun-filled hours with Shannon going through the store, trying things on, laughing and enjoying herself. “I needed a little escape, even if it was only for four hours. Thank you to Shannon and her staff. Cobblers is truly awesome.” “Thanks to all of you who entered our draw and congratulations to Jaimie!” – Shannon

The Alberta Motor Association put on a year-end appreciation pool party at the Aquatic Centre last Thursday for the city's 250 school safety patrollers. Patrollers from nine different schools worked up an appetite with a swim in the pool, after which they enjoyed a feast of pizza, chips, juice and cookies. "We wanted to thank our patrollers for once again taking part in the AMA School Safety Patrol Program and helping their fellow students cross the streets safely," said AMA School Safety Patrol Camrose regional coordinator Darcy Baron. Most of the school safety patrollers in Camrose are in Grades 5 and 6. "On occasion we have some in Grade 4 if the school staff is willing to get out there and help them with taking on such a big responsibility. We need to give an extra shout out to those staff because it is an extra responsibility they are asked to take on." The AMA School Safety Patrol program has operated for 75 years with no serious injuries or fatalities at school crosswalks. "We are celebrating 75 years in Alberta communities by connecting generations of former and current patrollers to share their stories from the crosswalk," said Baron. "Just like their parents and grandparents, today's patrollers learn leadership and responsibility by keeping our school zones safe. Through rain, snow and sunshine, patrollers help motorists, pedestrians and cyclists watch out for each other as they cross the road."

Butterfly collection to be on display during Thursday stewardship session By Samara Froland, Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society summer coordinator The coordinator for Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society (CWSS) will continue to host environmental educational events on Thursday evenings, although last week’s event was unable to take place. Martin Osis, an expert on mushroom identification and a founding member of Alberta Mycological Society was expected to perform a presentation on June 13. The presentation was

scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Stoney Creek Centre in Camrose. Unfortunately, Mr. Osis was unable to make it to the presentation. It was a disappointment for everyone who was excited to learn about edible mushrooms. As there appears to be much interest in this topic, the coordinator will make an attempt to reschedule the presentation for a future date. The next scheduled event is Eyes in the Skies, a presentation on butterflies. It will take place on Thursday, June 20 at

7 p.m. at the Stoney Creek Centre. Dr. Tom Terzin, a biology professor from University of Alberta, Augustana Campus will present this program. An interesting feature of this presentation will be the display of butterfly and moth specimens, including an extinct Jamaican moth. Tim Hortons has graciously offered to donate coffee and doughnuts to this event as well as other CWSS events.
