Like an increasing number of individuals and organizations, Rod Ross is interested in helping the beloved Purple Martins species return in abundance to Camrose and area. When the European Starling and the English House Sparrow were introduced by mankind to North America in the 1800s their aggressive behavior resulted in Martins being driven from their usual habitat and a high percentage of newly hatched chicks being killed. By the 1980s the species had all but disappeared. Today, for their survival, Martins are almost exclusively dependent

The 4th Annual Purple Martin Festival, sponsored by Rod’s company, Ross Agri, and Alberta Conservation Association, will be a wealth of information for aspiring, novice or experienced Martin “landlords.” Exciting scientific data will be released which will offer details of a Purple Martin whose annual round trip migration means a mind-boggling flight of over 21,000 kilometres! The Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society and the organizers of the Purple Martin Festival welcome you to this family-oriented day of learning and activities.
