Risky Ribs is another success By Alex Oliver

By 8 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 16 Camrose United Church men met in the Camrose United Church kitchen and started cooking ribs, baking beans, preparing salads and desserts, and setting tables. By 5:30 p.m. 41 more men assembled to get their job positions in order; and Ken Cox had his ice sculpture of ducks on a pond in place. At 6:30 p.m. Alex Oliver, Emcee, welcomed the sell-out crowd. At 6:35 p.m. Jerry Wallace, Darryl Dewalt and Davis Dewalt combined music and words to bless the meal. And then, Camrose United Church’s sixth annual Risky Ribs entertainment/fund-raiser event was underway in the CE Hall. “This is bigger than our church alone,” Leon Lohner, chair of the organizing committee, commented, “We reach out to the community and it’s become a community event. There is a large cross-section of the public in the audience; and there are nonmembers who volunteer. Part of its popularity is evidenced by the fact that the tickets are sold out two months in advance.” Entertainment started at 8 p.m. with Darryl and Davis Dewalt contributing three musical numbers – on piano, South American Sunset by Andrew A. Gordon; on violin, Gavotte in D Major by JS Bach); and voice, Es war einmal ein König by Beethoven. The German title is also known in English as The Song of the Flea. The live auction items continued to provide more entertainment. Church members donated a record 20 items for the auction. Jack Kamphorst’s BMW bike ride brought in $250. Other popular items included Bonnie Oliver’s cashmere pashmina from Jerusalem which went for $225. Michael Mucz’s newly published book Baba’s Kitchen Medicines sold for $125 as did Irma Noden’s two home-made apple pies. The two top items were Norma Ruhl’s watercolour of Mt. Hardisty and the Athabasca River painted on location in Jasper Park which went for $350; and Verny Cox’s ever popular cinnamon buns sold for a record $450. Jim Holmberg on alto sax, Morley Riske on tenor and baritone sax, and Orlene Wigglesworth on keyboard provided toetapping dance music. The crowd got into the music so much that several people danced wherever they could find space. Finally, The Mad Hatters jug band which consists of Leon Lohner, Dave Steblyk, Jack Kamphorst, Margaret Wallace, Ron Stables, Bob Lindsey, Buffy da Silva, and Alex Oliver led the crowd in a sing-a-long of old-time favourites which included a new number, A Place in the Choir. “I really enjoyed the evening. There is so much work that goes into it; and the dance music, the food, the sing-along and just having the opportunity to be with friends is a happy experience,” observed Lois Sperry, long-time member of Camrose United Church, “And, I was able to get some ideas for donations for nextyear’s auction.”
