Montreal storyteller, comedian brings show to Bailey By Murray Green

Canadian humourist, storyteller, musician and playwright Lorne Elliott will be performing “The Upside of the Downturn, his show of comedy and music theatre, to the Bailey Theatre in Camrose on March 14. Lorne's concert performance is a selection of his current monologues and songs dealing with life experience. Over the winter he has been creating new stage material about having to redefine priorities in view of life events. The Montreal writer and stage performer enjoys shaking the perceived wisdom of the world around him through comedy and storytelling. "I wanted to have a western tour in the spring because it is always nice that time of year. With each tour the old material gets pushed out by the new," said Lorne. "The show will be completely new, so if someone has seen my show before they won't have to worry about having seen if before." His one-man show concert presentation is delightfully foolish, witty and thought-provoking. Combining dry humour with musical parodies and skits, he is a shrewd observer of the human animal. Often self-deprecating, always silly and never profane, his funny tales are family friendly. "I share my stories and songs from incidents that happen to me. I tell them to people and if their eyes don't glaze over, I tell them to more people," joked Lorne. "It is an honest way to do shows. I like to constantly refer to the audience and receive feedback. Live shows are so important because you know instantly what is working and what isn't. It develops the culture and interactions. You never know what really works until it works. I learned to write from the audience. They tell you immediately if it is clicking or not," explained Lorne. For the past 26 years Lorne Elliott has been touring and performing in concert in theatres and arts centres across Canada, the U.S. and Australia. Regularly featured on television on such programs as The Just For Laughs Festival and comedy variety specials. "I tend to use my music to break things up and tell stories through folk songs," added Lorne. "My songs are stories and you take people along a journey with you." For 11 Seasons “Madly Off In All Directions was Lorne’s own CBC Radio comedy series, which went on until 2006. Lorne is currently developing new projects. He has four CDs of his works. Lorne is also a playwright and he received the Playwrights Guild of Canada 2012 Best New Musical award for his play Jamie Rowsell Lives. This past January, his play Culture Shock was produced by Central Alberta Theatre in Red Deer. Lorne's show on March 14 begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at $35 can be picked up at the Bailey Box Office or online.
