WELCOME TO WAYFARER! We are thrilled you are considering Camp Wayfarer and we look forward to sharing our camp family with your family.

At our core, Wayfarer is a close-knit community consisting of campers, counselors, alumni and parents. Averaging 200 campers per session, we are intentionally smaller than most overnight camps.

We find this size allows for a deeper connection with campers, helping them not only succeed in their camp experience, but in life beyond Wayfarer. Our primary mission is to have all members of our camp community strive to be the best possible version of themselves.

Our counselors and programming fuel this community. We offer fun and diverse activities supporting skills development and decisionmaking that help build self-confident, independent, more mature and competent young adults. Coupled with our camp traditions and energetic counselors, we provide a unique co-ed camp experience in a beautiful western North Carolina setting.

The following pages will give you a glimpse into life at Wayfarer as well as a better understanding of our culture. Please know that we make it a priority to meet every new camper and their family prior to Opening Day, no matter where home may be. This allows us to get to know campers, their interests, and share insights about camp life.

CHALLENGE. WIDE-OPEN FUN. LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS.

NOT JUST A GIRLS CAMP OR A BOYS CAMP, WAYFARER PROVIDES THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. Since our founding in 1992, we have held a strong belief that a coeducational experience is one of the cornerstones of adolescent social development. Though our boys and girls cabins are separated by Lake Chamois, meals and many daily activities are shared. Our size allows for great program flexibility: Some programs are just for boys, and some just for girls. We find this contributes to a more effective camp experience as we encourage lifelong, meaningful friendships rooted in respect and admiration In addition, we consider ourselves one of the few remaining “mom and pop” summer camps.

As a result of our size and key values, Wayfarer has been able to retain the spirit and intention set forth during our very first summer. We know all of our families by name, not by number, and we always cater to the individual needs of our campers. We’ve never forgotten why we’re in this business and we strive to show this through every aspect of our operation.

OUR COUNSELORS ARE

THE HEART AND SOUL OF LIFE AT WAYFARER

Charismatic, nurturing and motivated, with a love-for-life attitude, our counselors easily make each day the best day at camp. We understand that parents are entrusting us with their most precious possessions, and therefore we take the process of hiring our staff with the utmost importance and extreme selection.

Before counselors are hired, they must undergo an in-depth, in-person interview with a Camp Director followed with multiple background checks. Beyond being a solid candidate and role model for the camp family, meeting in person allows us something more: Can they look you in the eye? Do they have a solid handshake?

Are they role models? Are they excited about life? Do they have manners?

Are they trustworthy? These are all attributes we expect from our counselors right out of the gate. Our activities and curriculum are tried and true, but it is our staff that sets us apart and keeps our campers returning summer after summer.

CABIN LIFE

DAYS STEEPED IN TRADITION MAKE FOR A SUMMER FILLED WITH UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES Nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains, our camp property is divided by the stream fed waters of Lake Chamois. The boys cabins are situated on the eastern hillside of our 60 acres and the girls cabins in the valley on the opposite side of the lake. Both girls and boys can expect to live with 6–10 other campers of their same grade, along with two counselors and one CIT (counselor-in-training) leading each cabin. Campers are able to choose their bunk on the first day of camp and set up their “home” for the duration of their session.

OUR PROGRAM CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO STIMULATE GROWTH AND INDEPENDENCE DIRECTLY FROM DAY ONE.

ACTIVITIES

THEIR FIRST EVENING, CAMPERS SELECT AND CREATE THEIR ACTIVITY SCHEDULE FOR THE SESSION. Being away from home and from the assistance of parents, it is important that we encourage and support each camper while they navigate life “on their own.”

Allowing campers to select their own activities within the very first hours of arrival inspires confidence and an “I can do this” attitude that radiates throughout the session.

Each individual activity is designed to teach unique skill sets, sportsmanship, creativity, healthy living and so much more.
