Campus Outreach staff are often asked, “Over the past generation, how has the world changed, how have young people changed, and how has Campus Outreach changed?”

There’s no argument that during the last few decades our world experienced significant cultural and societal shifts. It’s clear that these changes deeply affected today’s generation of young people. Simply ask anyone over the age of 40 if today’s students are different from previous generations.

But this leaves the question, “How has Campus Outreach changed?”

The 2018-19 school year marks 40 years since our evangelistic work began with college students in Birmingham, Alabama in what would become Campus Outreach. Over 40 years, our engagement with students on college campuses has evolved as we consider their developmental needs to prepare them for a lifetime of following Christ. But our core vision and values of commitment to God’s word, partnership with the local church, and process of life-on-life missional discipleship are firm.

We believe God used those vision and values to increase Campus Outreach’s impact both locally and globally. If you are reading this book, you’re probably familiar with a particular CO region, such as Campus Outreach Birmingham or Campus Outreach Minneapolis. But CO is bigger than a single city or campus—it’s a movement that continues to reach thousands of students worldwide for Christ. In each of our 36 Campus Outreach locations, God is developing gospel-centered leaders through your prayers and support.

As you read through this 40 Year Impact Report, we want to say thank you. Please take time to find the Campus Outreach location and staff you support, and pray for their ministry. As you explore the broader context, we hope you’ll get a glimpse of how your support is making a difference on a global scale. Your prayers and partnership are the foundation of all that God is doing.

As we look ahead to the next 40 years, we are burdened by the gospel need among young people today, but God’s faithfulness in our past inspires hope for our future. Our work depends on earnest staff, strong churches, and faithful ministry partners like you as we continue Building Leaders Together.

Campus Outreach began as the dream of a local church pastor and two recent college graduates to reach college students at smaller campuses traditionally underserved by campus ministries. In 1978, an intentional evangelistic outreach began to students in Birmingham, Alabama. The ministry quickly spread as students shared the gospel with their friends at other universities or transferred to nearby colleges to pursue the vision of reaching students on campuses where there was no evangelistic work underway. Over the next 40 years, this focus on evangelism, discipleship, and leader development has resulted in thousands of lives all over the world being transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our vision is to Glorify God by Building Laborers on the Campus for the Lost World. By engaging in this work over 40 years, Campus Outreach has grown into a world-class leader development organization. We are focused on building leader development pipelines through local churches, preparing today’s students to shape tomorrow’s world.

PERSONAL EVANGELISM AND LIFE-ON-LIFE DISCIPLESHIP Campus Outreach began by asking, “Where are the students whom no one else is reaching?” This focus has continually led CO to focus on students without an understanding of the gospel. As students trust in Christ, they are engaged in life-on-life discipleship. As students are engaged in this process, we see God grow them from being spiritually lost to becoming spiritual leaders.

COMMITMENT TO LEADER DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT Today’s graduates are tomorrow’s marketplace and ministry leaders. We focus on developing and deploying those leaders. Through evangelism and discipleship, we provide emerging leaders with catalytic growth opportunities and experiences, and then launch these leaders into vocational ministry and the marketplace.

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LOCAL CHURCH Each Campus Outreach location functions in partnership with a local church, sent to reach students on campuses in proximity to the church.

By functioning in partnership with and under the authority of local churches, we prepare the next generation of leaders for a lifetime of service through the body of Christ.

CONNECTION WITH THE CAMPUS OUTREACH NETWORK Through partnership with the local church, Campus Outreach is locally led.

n measurable growth and statistical data, Campus Outreach’s impact around the world is reflected in the numbers. But as a ministry dedicated to life-change, CO pursues impact on a deeper level. Through relationships, training, and discipleship, the Campus Outreach experience can influence families, workplaces, churches and cities. Campus Outreach graduates are making a difference for Christ in immeasurable ways worldwide. So, how does this happen? The answer is simple, through Building Leaders Together. WIth God as the focus, partners like you allow the Holy Spirit to advance the impact of the gospel and change lives. The following six stories illustrate the impact of Building Leaders Together.

GOD’S GLORY

A

s a young man, just discharged from the military, Frank Barker committed his life to ministry. He thought, “I’ve been so bad, I better be a preacher.” During his first year in seminary, Dr. Barker pastored a small church in Alabama. “I pastored it for a year and it didn’t grow much,” he said. “I knew something wasn’t right.”

After meeting with a friend, Dr. Barker discovered that despite his Christian upbringing, he was missing an essential element of faith. “I hit on Romans 6:23 and transferred my trust from my own proven record of behavior, to Christ,” he shared. “My life changed dramatically. The church changed dramatically. It helps when the preacher becomes a Christian.”

Moving forward, Dr. Barker committed his life to sharing the power of the gospel, the simple truth he missed for years. “I thought, ‘I bet there are a lot of people out there like me.’ I had totally missed salvation as a free gift—it seemed too easy,” he said. “You’re not saved on the basis of works or even surrender. I had surrender. I didn’t have trust.”

With Christ as the center, and a passion to glorify God in the lost world, Campus Outreach was built on three principles. Originating from Dr. Barker’s foundation for Briarwood, these commitments are carried forth today by Campus Outreach leaders across five continents: • Theology: Throughout the world, CO maintains a gospel-centered and biblically based belief system.

• Ecclesiology: Each region and campus is firmly integrated into a local church.

• Methodology: Student-leaders are trained through personal evangelism and life-on-life discipleship.

“This method of life-on-life evangelism and discipleship wasn’t in the job description of most pastors at the time,” says Kent Bailey, CO International Network Coordinator. “CO’s leadership development component really comes from Rev. Barker’s example of putting people into practical leadership situations.” From Dr. Barker’s deeply rooted love for Christ and others, God continues to work through Briarwood, Campus Outreach, and its’ network of churches around the world.

“There’s no telling what God will do. We can have ideas, but He’s a lot more creative than we are. It’s amazing—God comes up with things we never could have dreamed of,” says Dr. Barker. •

From that first pastoral experience, Dr. Barker later planted Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Through his commitment to sharing the gospel and his example of personalized discipleship, Briarwood launched countless gospel initiatives worldwide, including Campus Outreach in 1978.

“One of the true tests of whether an endeavor is for God’s glory, is our possessiveness of it,” said Kent Bailey, CO International Network Coordinator. “They let the ministry go to allow it to grow under God’s authority.”

n the late 1970s Campus Outreach staff Tom Caradine and Curtis Tanner saw God at work on Alabama college campuses through prayer, evangelism and discipleship.

In 1978, they approached Briarwood Presbyterian Church Pastor Frank Barker with a question: “Where do you suppose most students go to college in Alabama?” Dr. Barker answered, “That’s easy— Auburn and Alabama.”

Through this multiplication model, CO has launched 23 ministry franchises in the U.S. and 13 ministry locations in 10 other countries. During the past 40 years, student leaders and staff have shared the gospel with more than 55,000 students at evangelistic events and trained 30,000 young leaders through discipleship groups.

CAMPUS But Curtis and Tom had done their research. Most students in Alabama and surrounding states attended smaller fouryear residential colleges, like those where CO had been successful. “They said, ‘We’ve learned how to make an impact on the small college campus. You’ve got ministries on larger campuses… you don’t have anybody on these smaller campuses,’” Dr. Barker recalled.

Trusting God with the ministry’s future, Briarwood leadership placed full-time staff on several campuses in Alabama and western Georgia. Throughout the 1980s the ministry grew rapidly. As students shared the gospel with friends on other campuses, discipleship groups formed and CO sent staff teams to support the growth.

To sustain the ministry, Dr. Barker and CO leadership made a strategic decision. Going forward, Campus Outreach would grow by multiplying into independent regions, in partnership with local churches in those areas. Each region would maintain CO’s theology and methodology, but retain freedom to expand as God moved in students’ lives. This pattern reflected Rev. Barker’s view of natural gospel expansion.

Alf Rhea, 1980s alumnus, remembers praying for revival with his discipleship group. They expected “a big conference of 17,000 college students.” Alf said, “I remember graduating thinking, ‘I guess revival never really came.’”

But 30 years later, while visiting his daughter at a CO Summer Beach Project, Alf saw his prayer answered. On a CO global map there were almost thirty CO franchises reaching more than 100 campuses in 10 countries. “It dawned on me, ‘Wow, God really did bring revival, but it was in a different way—through the process of multiplication— the process we’d signed on for,” he said. “It was neat watching how God did it on his timetable in a whole different way than we were looking for back then.” •

LIFETIME I

n the spring of 1995, 10 college seniors met for the last time at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia. Their Campus Outreach discipleship group studied scripture together for four years, and in that last meeting, they committed to encourage one another for a lifetime.

“The encouragement each woman receives and the prayers offered on each one’s behalf make the difficulties and the differences pale in comparison.”

“We wanted to hold on to the vision and values instilled in us: of reaching the world and pouring our lives into others through evangelism and discipleship,” said group member Wendy Eunice.

During their final study, they focused on Biblical leadership concepts through the book of Nehemiah. “We decided we wanted to be spread out along the wall, like the families Nehemiah had working across the wall,” Wendy said. “All working toward the same vision in the different places God would lead us.”

Together, this Campus Outreach discipleship group has celebrated, cried, and prayed through years of joy and hardship. “There are not words to express the impact this group has made on

In the 23 years since graduation, God placed the women on distinct paths, but the friends’ commitment to Christ and to encourage one another never wavered. The group continues to meet annually for a time of prayer and support.

“One of the greatest encouragements to me is knowing they are out there seeking God in their circles of influence,” said group member Bronwyn Williams. “These friends have always valued my personal ministry, to work on the part of the wall God has given me.”

Through the years, life circumstances and personal differences threatened the group’s closeness, but faith, prayer, and grace maintained their relationships. “In different places in

my life,” Bronwyn said. “There have been times I came to one of our weekends with a heavy heart. I won’t say it was easy to share my struggle, but as I poured out my heart, the love, grace, and empathy I found ministered God’s healing balm to me. They cried when I cried. They reminded me of God’s truth and promises. Then they knelt around me and prayed on my behalf.”

This fall, Bronwyn’s daughter will enroll at Georgia College, where God worked in her mom’s life more than 20 years ago. Bronwyn prays she will develop a gospel community that will last a lifetime. •

Like most students, Corey’s approach to college was balancing his class schedule and late nights with friends. When a Campus Outreach staff person started asking deeper questions, Corey ignored the knocks on his dorm room door.

It wasn’t until a fellow fraternity brother invited him to a CO retreat, that Corey questioned his own eternal significance. From there, his life took a turn for Christ. “I remember thinking, ‘I don’t have a choice but to respond and surrender my life because of the irresistible love of Jesus for sinners like me,’” he said. “After that, I had to work out my faith one step at a time.”

As part of Corey’s discipleship training, he attended CO’s local supporting church and became involved with a Sunday school class. “It was a key part of my growth,” Corey shared. “Our teacher was a lay person, who loved God’s word and God’s people. He wasn’t seminary trained but an ordinary guy who loved theology and loved teaching hungry college students.”

Corey’s experience with the local church through CO opened his eyes to how God uses the body of Christ to minister to a diverse group of people.

Those years sparked Corey’s love for ministry.

In 2010 Corey and a team planted Midtown Church in Indianapolis, and several years later, Midtown became the regional hub for Campus Outreach Indianapolis. “College is such a unique and special time, but it doesn’t always prepare you for the rest of life,” he said. “After you graduate, the pace of life will be different, your relationships will be different. The church may be the primary opportunity in your spiritual discipleship that prepares you for the next chapter of life.”

As a pastor, Corey’s ministry reflects his CO training. His focus is to share the gospel, disciple new believers through life-on-life relationships, and to continue to build the body of Christ through the local church. “Campus Outreach gave me courage,” Corey said. “I saw God use ordinary faithfulness, ordinary evangelism, and ordinary leadership. When ordinary people step out in faith, God uses them to accomplish extraordinary things for the kingdom of God.” •

s a freshman at Murray State University in Kentucky, Corey Smith viewed Christianity as a weekly Sunday obligation. “I went to church every Sunday with my mom, but it wasn’t a part of my life other than those two hours a week,” he said. “It was never a part of my identity at all.”

shared. “I don’t want to waste this time. All of the things I learned in college, being discipled … really prepared me to take advantage of this opportunity. I’m getting lots of opportunities to share my faith and use this platform for God’s kingdom.”

hen Brad Leath, former Campus Outreach staff, discusses his recent cancer diagnosis, he uses the word “opportunity.” Brad and his wife, Codie, served as Campus Outreach student leaders at Murray State University in Kentucky before joining the CO Memphis staff team.

Today, they are successful business owners and parents of four children. The couple credits Campus Outreach with preparing them to view every circumstance as an opportunity for Christ. “So many truths that I’ve learned from God’s word over the past 20 years are coming back to my heart and mind and holding me steadfast through this storm,” Codie shared. “I feel completely anchored.”

Campus Outreach gave Brad & Codie solid gospel theology as a foundation, strong discipleship relationships, and practical training to share their faith with others. “I’m in the unique situation where I’ve got, supposedly, a small amount of time and there’s a lot of clarity that’s come into my life,” Brad

In addition to a strong spiritual foundation and leadership training, CO left Brad & Codie with a gospelcentered community. “The friendships I made back in my college years have continued,” Codie said. “No matter what life deals us, we have fought to keep those friendships strong. It takes regular maintenance to stay spiritually healthy and our friendships from CO set us up well to do that.”

Brad & Codie view their family, their businesses, and their circumstances as opportunities for God to work. “The world is broken and that affects even Christians,” Codie said. “We are not exempt from struggles such as cancer. But because I’m a part of God’s family, he works all things together for my good. That ‘good’ is sometimes easy-to-accept blessings, but it can also be growth that comes from going through a trial. God is the master of flipping a trial into a catalyst for growth and kingdom advancement.”

Ten years after leaving CO staff, the Leath’s continue to support the ministry. They firmly believe God is using Campus Outreach to prepare students to face every circumstance for Christ. “I’m very thankful for Campus Outreach and how it has impacted my life,” Brad said. •

Being discipled through Campus Outreach, Andy Cheely developed a passion for the lost world.

25 years ago, this burden led Andy and and his wife Brooke to begin living and ministering in East Asia. A quarter-century later, this same passion for the lost is what motivated their move back to the U.S. to serve with CO International.

“We moved to East Asia to help reach the lost world. And now we’re back because we want to help CO continue that pioneering spirit that began 40 years ago,” said Andy Cheely, Director of Operations with CO International’s Global Resource Center. “I’m eager to see CO press into places that are uniquely challenging. Trying new things has always been front and center as a core value for the organization.”

Like the early CO movements, individual endeavors lay the groundwork for fulltime staff presence. With the support of multiple partners including regional churches, established CO franchises, and

The pioneering spirit, which is the foundation of CO’s growth, is being integrated right into international discipleship to foster a missionary mentality. International franchises have unique opportunities for growth, especially in restricted access areas. With a united vision for expansion, several U.S. and international franchises are forming new partnerships. “New Zealanders can get into East Asia more easily than Americans.

Brazilians are able to walk into Middle Eastern contexts with a very different experience than an American. South Africans can relate to other African nations quickly.”

Forty years later, through evangelism and discipleship, the same passion for the lost world and commitment to leader deployment and gospel expansion is driving Campus Outreach’s growth on a global scale. •

Others are also starting to think beyond their country or region. “What I’m most excited about is developing that sending culture in every CO location around the world,” Andy shared. “There are currently pockets of individuals who feel called to reach new areas for Christ.”

It appears during periods of testing, evaluation, and preparation. God used Moses’ 40 years in Midian to prepare him to lead the Exodus.

Israel’s 40 year sojourn in the desert gave the nation a hunger for the Promised Land. Jesus’ 40-day testing in the desert declared his divinity and prepared him for his ministry. “The Village Church and Campus Outreach have been a match made in heaven.

As the idea of Christianity becomes less and less acceptable among secular college students, the staff of Campus Outreach is there in dorm rooms and coffee shops proclaiming the good news, exposing the false narratives and loving like Jesus. For years, CO Khon Kaen prayed for God to draw more Thai men to faith. After implementing new ministry strategies, unprecedented numbers of men have asked difficult questions and accepted Christ.

Over the last three years, CO Khon Kaen has had 16 Thai male and 16 Thai female students come to faith in Christ. In June alone, six men prayed to receive Christ.

CO Memphis began in 1996 on two campuses in the Tennessee/Kentucky area.

The region expanded to seven campuses and has launched seven new CO franchises - Indianapolis (2002), Lexington (2003), Central Illinois (2007), Dallas/Ft Worth (2011), Denver (2016), Baton Rouge (2016), and Knoxville (2017). Of these seven franchises, CO Indianapolis launched two additional franchises - St Louis (2011) and Columbus (2012). Collectively, these regions minister on 40 campuses. After its first eight years of ministry, a majority of CO Washington D.C.’s staff team were discipled through CO on DC campuses. The ministry also reflects the ethnic diversity of the campuses it serves. This year, 22 out of 37 Leadership Project participants represented minority groups. These students were guided by an equally diverse group of leaders.

CO Dallas/Ft. Worth serves one of the most diverse student populations in the nation.

Five years ago, CO Dallas/Ft. Worth had only two nationalities and two languages spoken among CO students. Today, CO discipleship groups represent five nationalities, with ten languages spoken. By God’s grace, CO Dallas/Ft. Worth is reaching a more diverse scope of the students on these campuses.

San Diego Life Change “During the past year, as part of the CO board of directors, I’ve spent time with the staff and seen their interaction with students. I’ve observed that the CO team deeply loves Jesus. There is also a strong sense of community. They love one another and are deeply committed to one another. Finally, they truly love the young men and women and are intentional about spending time with them on campus. A testament to this is the 13 professions of faith in the last three months–lives are being changed and God’s kingdom is growing through CO!”

CO San Diego recently hired six new staff members, all of which came to Christ through CO San Diego. Established in 2012, CO San Diego is fostering a new generation of leaders, as 50 percent of the staff are West Coast natives.

Two years ago, CO Houston began a concentrated “mobilization effort,” where graduating students are trained to implement gospel-focused leadership skills in their lives after college. Ninety percent of graduating students participated in this leadership process. Most of these students stayed in the city, where CO Houston hopes to see a marked impact in the marketplace, local church, and around the world. CO Houston also reflects the diversity of its home city, since 52 percent of its cumulative 200 student leaders represent minority groups.

Columbus Life Change “My story begins two spiritual generations ago with the CO Columbus Director, Patrick Lewis. Patrick led Andrew Lingg, Chris Coons, and Casey Andis to faith in Christ while they were students back in Indiana. While still in college, Andrew led Alex Fehr to Christ and Chris led Dylan Wright to Christ. Once CO Columbus launched, Casey led me to Christ as a freshman at Bowling Green. We all currently serve on staff with CO Columbus—seven men spanning three spiritual generations—seeking to multiply our lives through reaching college students with the gospel.”

CO Columbus is consistently preparing student leaders to share the gospel and disciple others in real-world relationships.

As the ministry grows, an increasing number of leaders are joining this staff to minister to students at their alma maters.

After transitioning to hosting their own Leadership Project, CO Columbus is poised for continued gospel impact.

For the past two years, 3-5 graduates per year at Tennessee Tech committed to overseas opportunities and the momentum has the potential for that number to grow exponentially. In a single year, CO Baton Rouge became an integral part of its hub church, where 85% of students involved in CO are active members. The CO Global Resource Center exists to support the health, collaboration, and expansion of the entire Campus Outreach movement with a special focus on CO’s international teams. Strategic services such as leader assessments, coaching networks, ministry training, mobilization support, and new location investigation are provided to help the US and International teams work more synergistically and strategically.

People under the age of 30 make up 74% of Zambia’s population. As a landlocked country, Zambia is surrounded by eight other nations. If the true gospel is modeled well, Lusaka is positioned to be the epi-center for reformed evangelical church planting and college ministry movement in Sub-Sahran Africa.
