UNEMPLOYMENT RATE INCREASING NATIONWIDE The growth in employment by 144 000, was offset by the growth in the number of jobseekers by 433 000 driving the unemployment rate to 27,7% in the first quarter of 2017. This is the highest un-employment rate observed since September 2003.

The growth in employment was observed in all industries except Agriculture, trade and services. The biggest growth was observed in Manufacturing (62 000), Finance & other business services (49 000) and Mining (26 000). Mining grew for the first time in Q1:2017 after declining for four succes-sive quarters.

Furthermore, employment grew in all provinces quarter to quarter except in Eastern Cape and Limpopo. All Metros registered growth in employment except Nelson Mandela Bay, Mangaung and City of Johannesburg which remained virtually unchanged.

There were approximately 500 000 extra people in employment in Q1:2017 compared to the same period last year. The year-onyear employment growth was driven by manufacturing (145 000), construction (143 000) and finance (152 000).

Of the 433 000 people who joined the ranks of the unemployed, approximately 58% were young people aged 15-34 increasing the youth

As you know there are volunteer activities where people give clothes and food to impoverished people within the cites around June, I got to ask myself whether we as people can do more for these people. I say this based on this Italian proverb ‘Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I have noticed that these people have no form of livelihood and they do not have a reason to hope for a meal after we have given them one.

The more which I would like to be done is to teach our brothers and sisters how to use up empty spaces even the most littliest by planting vegetables and for people to not just be given clothes but also a wool and crochets and be taught how to make their own jerseys and scarfs.

I feel that we as a society can do more by just buying one packet of seeds and donating them to the poor, or even a wool or a crochet.

I believe that one wool, crochet and seed packet at a time can make a much bigger difference to the providence of nutrient rich food forthe poor.

transportation which sees students travelling extended distances to and from varsity, couple that with the high travelling expenses. To sum it up; we are calling for the increment of student housing so that we can liberate our students from this hypocrisy. The funding bodies/institutions have clearly failed to do their job, and we are calling for change. Another reality we’re still dealing with is racism. We have a lecturer at the varsity who’s yet to open her eyes to a world where people of all races are equal.

Something must be done, and we as SASCO are here to take action and make a change. We remain a beacon of hope to the student’s society.

The management is making the accreditation policy rather impossible to attain for private service providers. The University approved an accreditation policy in a bid to increase private student housing, yet management is refusing to allocate adequate housing for our students in need. The current higher education policy states that about 40% of students must reside on the residence of the university, yet at TUT Mbombela, less than 11% of students stay in res due to lack of accommodation.

unemployment rate by 1,6 percentage points to 38,6%. The proportion of those in short term unemployment (i.e those who have been looking for work for less than a year ) increased by 2,4 percentage points to 34,2% a further indication that these were young people who joined the labour force at the beginning of the year.

Unemployment rate remained high among those with education level of less than matric at 33,1% which is 5,4 percentage points higher than the national average. While the unemployment rate among graduates remained at 7,3%.

Unemployment rate increased or remained virtually unchanged in all provinces except Northern Cape. The biggest increase in unemployment rate was observed in Eastern Cape which increased by 3.8 percentage points to 32,2%.

The expanded unemployment which includes those who wanted to work but did not look for work increased by 391 000 people, resulting in an increase of 0,8 of a percentage point in the expanded unemployment rate to 36,4%. This is approximately 9,3 million persons who did not have work but wanted to work in Q1:2017.

LOWVELD HIGH SCHOOL SLEEPOUT Lowveld High will be participating in a school sleep out, where learners will spend a night outdoors on their school grounds to show empathy and collect items to benefit abandoned babies. “Beneficiaries have been selected across the nine provinces of SA and all work to create spaces for abandoned babies and children. Other institutions are also encouraged to rise to the challenge and host their own school sleep out on their campus grounds.” Said Kim Garner The school sleep out is an initiative of a nonprofit organization behind the famous CEO sleep out and the current ShEO Sleep out.

Mbombela get ready, a wave of beauty and brawns is about to hit your shores! The Face of Mpumalanga competition which will crown a male and female contestant is heating up and the guys and girls are ready to show the land of the rising sun who reigns supreme.

Campus Connect spoke to Founder Ms Nompumelelo Nkosi who shares that the competition is more than just a sash and a glittering tiara.

The self-funded event will focus on the reality and danger of substance abuse and teen pregnancy. “We have partnered with the Department of Social Services and other NGO’s to go around various schools to give talks.

Our first stop is the Fundinjobo High School in Phakani, Kabokweni on the 23rd of June. We will be accompanied by some of our contestants who will also hand out toiletries to those in need.” Says Nkosi.

With German beast BMW on board, the contestants will be driven around in style while fulfilling their charity duties. “Our winners must serve as role models as the real work will start after the crowning.” She adds.

The contestants, who have already been chosen will fight for the crown at Emnotweni Arena in Nelspruit on the 12th of August. Some of the glamorous prizes include an allexpense paid weekend at the 4-star Ndalo Hotel in Badplaass and a cash prize from the City of Mbombela Youth desk.

Tshepiso Phosa is a young, successful entrepreneur who hails from the Lowveld.

Tshepiso joined Matthews Phosa & Associates (MPA) as a junior administrative manager where she was in charge of four portfolios. Later that year a wonderful opportunity caught her attention.

Food, fun and games is provided for the children to enjoy at their doorstep. She is also part of Kungumusa Community Base by handing out food on a regular basis to the orphans.

Milviforce is the proud fuel sponsor for the Steval Pumas. She signed up with the Pumas in 2016 and the partnership has blossomed since. She also provide the “Man of the Match” from every home game at Mbombela stadium with a fuel voucher.

She partnered with Gsk8t this year to assist this company help keep troubled boys off the street by spreading the gospel through skateboarding.

She sponsors them with fuel vouchers at some of their events.

Tshepiso Phosa is becoming more and more involved in the community and is involved at Pro Gratia Learning Centre, which is a school for learners with special educational needs, by sponsorships and her adopted son is also in this school.

Tshepiso Phosa is surely a dynamic young business woman who doesn’t stand back to any challenge. She seeks opportunities where she goes and loves being able to help the community and make a difference.

Nolwazi Cynthia Madalane (20), she is currently stydying Public Management and Governance at the University of Johannesburg, she is currently an aspiring model and in the near future she would love to see herself in those big billboards which is something she is currently working on. “In the next five to ten years, I’ll be specialising in the field that I’m currently studying, even though I’m not planning on staying there for long, I’ll be working with companies that are willing to eradicate poverty and unfair discrimination amongst our fellow South Africans.

Nompilo Manana (20) is currently studying at CTI (now Pearson institute), she is doing her Bcom Law Degree.

“In the next five to ten years, I see myself being an Attorney, and assisting my country with all the current problems we are facing, such as the violation of women’s rights and dealing with all the constitutional rights that we have in the country.” said Nompilo Manana

Ntabiseng Ngcongwane (20), she’s currently doing her second year in Marketing, in five to ten years from now, she definitely wants to see herself employed and working for a media company, preferably a radio station or a music channel, and later on, with all the experience she should’ve accumulated along the way, she sees herself becoming a marketing manager, if not opening her own marketing agency.

SKATING WITH A

PURPOSE PHINDI SIBIYA

Mention the word skating and what comes to mind?

Rebellion, graffiti, drugs and the constant sound of police sirens. “Not this time”, says Gareth Green of Gsk8t, a Nelspruit-based skateboarding brand with the Christian religion as its core. He emphasizes that his brand’s values are about relationship building. “We are a faith based brand pushing the Love of Jesus Christ by reaching a misguided generation through the street culture of skateboarding. We push to inspire, motivate and love a brethren who often feels rejected.” Green explains that the eight-year old brand was inspired by a lack of a social life in the land of the rising sun.

“Moving from Joburg to Nelspruit was quiet a culture shock. Everything was moving at a snail’s pace, so I decided to put my love for skateboarding into action.”

I saw a gap and took the opportunity to introduce a skateboarding scene to Mpumalanga.” He adds.

He’s quick to mention that it wasn’t smooth sailing in the beginning, adding that among their teething problems, changing people’s view was their biggest challenge. ”Society views skating as a rebel culture,

which made it near impossible to build credibility.” They started the mammoth task of changing the negative view by being persistently horting small events in public facilities such as Ilanga Mall, while spreading the Holy Word on social media. This, says Green, caught the eye of now friend and mentor, Gary Friend, owner of Hi Q Nelspruit as well as Andre De Goede, from De Goede Finance Universe.

“Thanks to these individuals, our doors keep opening.”

The company has over the last few years, enjoyed media attention from both local and national media. Notably, an appearance on SABC 2’s lifestyle show; Hectic 9-Nine. To add to his bragging rights, he also lists a string of mega sponsors such as Hi-Q Nelspruit, Traans-Oos, Milviforce Puma and Metal Land among others. With the company showing positive growth and influence amongst the youth and religious houses, he lists the development of the skating culture in the rural communities, particularly where skateboarding is a new thing, as one of their future plans. “We are looking at places like Kabokweni as a start.

On a bigger scale, we are planning to build a skate school in Nelspruit where we can give skating lessons as well as build a bigger skating culture. Impossible is nothing.” He concluded.

Fortune Dlamini (26) is the proud co-owner of The gallery at The Village Shopping Center in Nelspruit. He says that his passion for food and all things modern inspired him to establish this one of a kind business concept (through the assistance of his business partner Tlhologelo Mashegoane); a place where coffee, food and art were all blended together to create The gallery.

Fortune started off his career in the hospitality industry as a waiter in the year 2010 while in college and later followed his passion for cooking after he could not graduate for his diploma due to a lack of funds which resulted in him only earning an attendance certificate and credits for completed subjects within the course. In the midst of pursuing financial stability and establishing a career in the field, he began working as a comis chef at Casa Toscana Lodge in 2013 and moved onto working in a variety of departments within the Protea Hotel Group from 2014 until his latest Senior role, which saw him functioning as a Marketing Coordinator for two of the group hotels in Mpumalanga (Protea Hotel Malaga and Protea Hotel Hazyview) between the year 2015 and 2017.
