MISSION

Since 1908, Camp Pemigewassett’s abiding mission has been to inspire and support boys ages 8 to 15 as they find their own distinctive paths in becoming self-reliant, caring, and engaged citizens of our diverse and ever-changing world.

SKILLFUL GROWTH

When campers are away from home at Pemi, they face ups (mostly), downs (occasionally), challenges (regularly), and make decisions (daily) that help them to practice and strengthen valuable skills in resilience, empathy, perseverance,gratitude, and self-control.

Rather than solving challenges FOR campers, we guide them through the empowering process of approaching, managing, and creating solutions for life’s challenges as they come.

LIFE AT CAMP Pemi boys unwind from the academic year in a program that encourages them to pursue current interests and explore new ones, to balance structure with self-directed time. Leaving their electronic devices at home, they connect instead with the people and world around them. This allows time and space to forge meaningful friendships, independence, and to feel at home.

With his counselor’s help, every camper creates his own weekly schedule, choosing from over 80 instructional and program-based activities from beginner to expert level in four areas: Sports, Nature, Hiking, and The Arts (music, woodworking, crafts & studio art, and drama).

Afternoons offer free time to compete in athletic events with neighboring camps, work on projects, play with friends, or simply relax with a great book.

Surrounded by the serene beauty of New England’s White Mountains, campers live in cabins with 6-10 boys and two counselors. Along with the entire community, they enjoy healthy, fresh, family-style meals in our Mess Hall. Their summer family is made up of fellow campers, counselors, and numerous older adults, including program staff and heads, Pemi’s directors, and two health care professionals.

Being at camp has a way of bringing out the best in everyone. Whether they’re singing the “Campfire Song” at the close of our weekly Saturday evening gatherings or enjoying the time-honored tradition of listening to their counselor reading aloud each night to the campers in their cabin, boys who come to Pemi become part of a brotherhood that spans generations and stretches around the globe.

Each time he gets home from camp, I wonder, ‘Does Pemi sprinkle magic dust on the food?’ Really! He’s more confident and comfortable in his own skin. His teacher has told me his desk is always neat. He might leave Pemi in August, but he carries Pemi with him all year round. It’s a sacrifice sending him and his brother to camp, in more ways than one. But at Pemi, they’re learning things I can’t teach them. When I miss them, I take solace in knowing that I have my boys for 10 months of the year.

I’ve tried things at Pemi I’d never do before. I really enjoy hiking the White Mountains.

On a trip to Mount Washington, the weather was so clear that I could almost see the Atlantic Ocean from the 6,288 foot summit. Pemi also introduced me to competitive swimming, and I discovered that it comes naturally to me. I just joined my school swim team!

Pemi provides a ideal environment for him to explore life without our oversight, a place where he can develop resilience. Pemi can’t control the weather or make every sporting contest a victory. He learned that ⸺ wet or dry, win or lose ⸺ effort, good sportsmanship, and celebrating the day are what’s important.
