2019 YEAR IN REVIEW It’s hard to believe, but Camp Jewell’s 119th year is officially coming to a close. Another year of new friends and lifelong memories is in the books, and before we look onward to 2020, let’s take a moment and look back on the amazing year that was 2019! This year we:

From 1992 until 2015, there was only one place to stay up to date with all the comings and goings at our beloved Camp Jewell YMCA, and that place was the Triangle Lake Tribune. A vaguely informative, yet highly entertaining piece of top-notch journalism, the Tribune was edited by esteemed writers such as former Board Chair Bob Stearns and who ever it was that came before and after him. Aimed at providing up-to-date information to Camp Jewell’s thousands (if not millions(no wait, definitely just thousands)) of Alumni, the Tribune brought you memorable articles like “Recent News”, and “The Summer Camp Report for 1997”

• Served 1,400 summer campers from every county in CT, 18 different states, and 7 different countries;

But, alas, due to the Great Toner Shortage of 2015, the Triangle Lake Tribune lost its title as the longest continually run news publication to none other than The Hartford Courant.

With this reboot, we hope to recapture some of the Tribune’s previous glory, and once again bring to you all that you need to know (and perhaps some things you didn’t) about Camp Jewell.

• Opened our first new Main Camp cabin since 1994 and a brand new, state-of-the-art health center;

• Partnered for the first time with Camp Clio to provide a tailored camp experience to 42 adopted children; • Saw the beginnings for 5 new directors - Executive Director Craig Dawson, Outdoor Center Director Craig, Jay Aronson, and Jay Case celebrate the new Anthony Amalfi, Summer Camp Director Oliver Gregan, cabin dedication Logistics Manager and Day Camp Director Sabrina CODE 66: WHERE ARE THEY?!?

From now on we hope to bring you a new Triangle Lake Tribune every month, but due to budgeting constraints and previous time commitments, maybe quarterly is more realistic?

As Bob wrote to start off the Jan. 1999 edition, “Well, well, well.

Two newsletters in a period of 6 months must be a new record.”

Whatever the case ends up being, we promise to bring Camp Jewell back into your homes, relive our cherished memories together, and engage you more with Jewell than you’ve ever been engaged before (at least since 2015).

• Served over 13,000 individuals throughout our Summer Camp and Outdoor Center;

• Raised $159,000 for Camp Jewell’s Annual Campaign; Rosetta Okohson-Reb (s ’08-’12) Married in Nov. 2019.

• Donated 200+ lbs of summer lost and found to the Colebrook School clothing drive; and • Laughed, cried, and all-around had a great time.

Ginna Taft (s’90-’04) Becky Barton (s’92-’19), Catt Durkin (s ‘03-’15) and Kathie Reese (s ’83-’16) spent their spring break with Karen Kristo (s’96-03) in Austin, TX this year to celebrate Becky’s 50th birthday. It has become an annual event hoping to be joined by Ethna Flanagan and Shannon Donovan-Monti Ed Dunn (c ‘56-’61, s’62-’71) arrived at Jewell age 9 back when it was still an all boys camp. Ed’s career path took him to retail sales in West Hartford where he managed a men’s clothing store and currently a toy store. Ed volunteered as a Camp Jewell board member for 16 years, including as Chair for 5 years, and helped with the decision to make Jewell co-ed in 1973. Ed continues to assist camp through both his time and treasure and is currently helping locate alumni from Jewell’s early years in CT. MESSAGE FROM THE EXEC

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE Thanks to the generosity of dozens of Jewell alumni and friends, Camp Jewell has already raised over $1 million to date to put toward the construction of our new facilities.

Since 1955, our current facilities have served us well, but with the construction of new cabins, we will be prepared to serve generations of campers to come.

Thanks to Camp Rising Sun, Camp Jewell was able to build our new state-of-the-art Health Center.

The facility will be able to better provide health care to kids throughout the summer and act as camp’s staff center throughout the year.

Dear Alumni, 2019 was a year of many firsts at Camp Jewell. We saw the completion of our first new cabin and our new health center. Each was funded by generous donations from alumni like you, longtime supporters and community partners like Camp Rising Sun. It was also the first summer of our new partnership with Camp Clio, a camp for children who have been adopted. Beyond those milestones, this summer was special as it was my first year as Executive Director at Jewell and the first year for our new team of program directors.

As I head into my eighth year here, I am excited more than ever for the road ahead of us. While Jewell is known nationwide for its amazing facilities and great staff, the true strength of Camp Jewell is the life-changing experiences it gives to children. This is the reason we all work at camp. We take great pride and have great respect for those that made camp what it is today and are honored to follow in the footsteps of those who came before us. At our annual Corn Roast, we honored Kathie Reese, our former Office Manager with the Scoobie Award for being a true legend of Camp. For me personally, this was one of the highlights of my time at Jewell.

This year, we served over 13,000 people, including over 1,400 campers in our summer programs. The friendships and memories that were made are the backbone of camp. Through the generosity of donors like you, we were able to provide a camp experience to over 300 children this past summer that would not have otherwise been able to attend. As we head towards summer 2020, our goal is to continue to serve campers from all backgrounds. After all, in today’s world, summer camp is needed more than ever.

2020 will bring the construction of our next new cabin, along with over $200,000 of capital improvements to camp as we continue to preserve the legacy of the past 119 years. We have an ambitious plan to upgrade even more of camp to ensure that we can continue to provide the same high-quality programs and experiences to guests yearround at camp into the future. The plan isn’t just about new buildings; it’s about the facilities that have served hundreds of thousands of guests and campers since we moved to Colebrook in 1956 and ensuring we can continue to do so for the next 65 years.

Camp Jewell’s first new cabin includes: - A full wrap around porch - Twice as many bathroom fixtures as current cabins - Two chaperone rooms for Outdoor Center groups - 360° field of view in the bunkroom so each bunk sees the others - Stairs to each bunk to improve access - Fully ADA compliant
