WHAT’S HAPPENING AT CAMP JEWELL YMCA

GOING THE (SOCIAL) DISTANCE Every Camp Jewell Alum knows that campers leave here with more than dirty hair and funny stories; they leave with confidence. I left camp each year confident in my ability to make friends, try new things, and build a better future for those around me. I was also confident that lice outbreaks taught me the meaning of “quarantine”, which brings me to the next thing camp has taught me: I don’t know jack.

Regardless of how we got into this whole predicament, social distancing guidelines and quarantines have reminded many of us what we are truly grateful for, especially at Jewell. Here’s a quick list of some things I’m thankful for at camp:

1.

540 acres of property makes it easier to maintain 6 feet of social distance

2.

WB Mason delivers our toilet paper in bulk

3.

Poor reception limits the amount of push notifications from the news

4.

Staying on camp for months and only leaving for essentials is par for the course

5.

If I get bored, there is always something to paint grey, brown or beige

6.

If worse comes to worst, we can always plant corn on the field

7.

The mice in my attic at West Lodge don’t carry COVID-19

8.

Cleaning Hobie’s grease trap probably bolstered my immune system

9.

If Duolingo fails, cabin graffiti comes in several different languages

10.

You don’t need prime ingredients for a Hobo Dinner but that doesn’t matter if you have enough ketchup and steak seasoning

Most of all, I’m thankful that someday soon, masks will mean we’re performing skits at the Council Ring, gloves will mean we’re making tie-dye, and social distance means we’re CHOOSING to get away from the world for a while. In the meantime, as the old saying goes, “Remember your friends and the Spirit of the Campfire.”.....just remember to wash your hands too.

REQUIEM FOR A CABIN When Camp Jewell moved to Colebrook, CT in 1955, construction began on our first set of cabins, which still stand to this day. While they have been renovated over the years, the buildings themselves are original, and have each served thousands of people. As we prepare to ready camp for the next 50 years, sadly we must begin to remove some of these places that many of us have called home. This April we began the decommissioning of Cabin 3, the first cabin that will be replaced to make way for the next era.

Buildings often have a spirit to them as if they are another being in our camp environment. Like an old house being moved out of, there is an emotion to seeing it go. As we continue to build new cabins, we’d like to take a moment to appreciate all of the time and effort that went into constructing, updating, and maintaining these buildings, without which Camp Jewell would not be what it is today!

Where are we going from here?

DID YOU KNOW? - Each of the original 13 cabins served more than 35,000 guests

While we are sad to see our cabins go, we are excited for our plans for the future. Our next cabin, which we have just broken ground on, will be completed by the end of this summer. After that, we will be removing two more original cabins to break ground on the next two new cabins. All in all, donations and grants of $1.5 million dollars will allow us to complete this next round of construction, but our ambition doesn’t stop there!

With an eye toward the next 50 years of Camp Jewell, we will be looking to replace or renovate every cabin and building at camp, but we need your help! If you would like to be involved in our capital campaign, or donate please contact camp at Camp.Jewell@ghymca.org!

MESSAGE FROM THE EXEC Dear Alumni, Most importantly, I hope you and your family are doing well during these difficult times. Although it has only been a few months since our last newsletter much has changed in this world. No one could have anticipated the global pandemic that has spread across the globe and the impact that it has had in terms of loss of life, employment, and people’s lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been impacted by COVID-19.

It has certainly been a strange time at camp. Usually the spring is full of students in our Outdoor Education programs, and guests visiting camp for our weekend retreats. There is an eerie silence around camp only to be punctuated by the familiar sound of the geese roaming the athletic field. After much discussion as a staff team, and in conjunction with guidance from the State of Connecticut, this will also be the first year since Camp Jewell moved to Colebrook that we will not be offering summer overnight or day camp. This was a difficult decision to make, but we know it was the right one, and to say we are devasted is an understatement. Camp Jewell is a safe place for our campers, it is a place where they can be their true self, make friends, and grow in independence. For us, not to be able to provide that experience for our campers and staff is heart breaking.

However we are all focused on the future and know that camp will return in 2021.

This is also financially devastating to camp. When we look look at the lost revenue from both the Outdoor Center and Summer Camp, we expect to lose well over $1 million this year. While we have cut expenses where possible, the lack of revenue from summer camp fees could potentially damage camp moving forward.

As such, we have launched our Preserve the Magic Campaign to help us cover our base expenses and ensure camp continues to thrive in the future.

Despite this, there have been many positive developments at camp over the past few months. We committed to keeping all of our full-time staff and program staff on payroll because we knew it was the right thing to do. We have spent this time keeping in contact with our campers online through a series of fun online clinics and will continue to do so. We have also been able to do a LOT of necessary updates to camp. Almost all of the existing cabins were renovated with new paint, carpet, and bathroom upgrades.

Additionally, we have also repainted many program spaces like Boulder Basin, Endor, Centennial, and the office. Finally, through a generous donation we were able to start work on replacing Cabin 3. I am so proud of how the entire staff team came together during these difficult times, and what a difference it has made.

While camp is currently quiet, I can’t wait until the day that people can visit Jewell again. As we say in our closing candlelight ceremony “no matter how far you travel away from camp, it is always your home”.

I hope to see you at camp again soon.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, Camp Jewell is faced with a difficult situation the likes of which we have never seen before. Closing camp has been hard on all of us. First and foremost we’re devastated that we will not be hosting Summer Camp 2020. It saddens us that we will not have the opportunity to provide a Camp Jewell life-changing experience this summer. However, as we prepare for 2021, we must acknowledge that the financial burden the closure has placed on camp will make it more challenging to provide the same programs you have come to expect. With that in mind, we have set out on a mission

to raise $250,000 dollars toward preserving the magic of Camp Jewell.

CAMP JEWELL HISTORY CORNER Long Live the CJ Olympics!

The Kid from Junior 3B The year was 1968. The cabin was Junior 3B. The counselor was Ira Garber. The camper was me.

All of 9 years old, skin and bones, a stomach of butterflies, yet filled with a sense of excitement, anticipation and adventure that arrives with the first day of camp. In fact, for each of the next 10 summers I experienced those same emotions when I drove up the camp road on that first day.

Camp Jewell has always been an amazing combination of the familiar and the unknown. Of traditions and innovations. Of old friends and new.

For 50+ years I‘ve watched the history of Camp Jewell unfold. Sometimes from the inside through the eyes of a young boy and sometimes from the outside through an old newspaper article about some overlooked yet colorful tidbit of Jewell’s past. I’m no historian but I take interest in celebrating Jewell’s history so that it’s preserved for all to see.

To some people Camp Jewell is a brief 2-week experience. To others it’s a journey. To many of us, though, it’s both of these things and together they make history. 120 years of history.

Although I’ve done a fair amount of writing for various Camp Jewell publications over the years, it’s been nearly a decade since I’ve contributed to the Tribune. Our plan is to make this history section a regular feature and I look forward to dusting off some old photos and breathing new life back into them. I hope you enjoy the journey.

With the postponement of the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo this summer, many of us are wondering just how we’re going to get by without our biennial dose of international competition, intrigue, and sportsmanship. Sure, the TV networks will probably be filled with all kinds of stories and footage from Olympics past, but the summer’s just not going to be the same no matter how you try to spin it.

Well, as many of you old timers will recall, Camp Jewell used to have its own Olympics every summer and it was a HUGE deal.

No doubt some of you still have a collection of CJ trophies and ribbons that bring back great memories and pride. (There’s nothing like 2nd place in the 220 yd dash at age 11!) So, we thought it would be fun to share some history about the great CJ Olympics. Let the games begin!

The Camp Jewell Olympic Games, started in 1961 under the leadership of camp Director Charles “Mr. Chuck” Hastings, were considered by most to be the highlight of summer programming. This was evident by the fact that third session - the only session in which Olympics were held, filled up almost immediately.

It wasn’t just the competitive events they enjoyed, it was the pageantry, the smell of the blanks firing in the starting guns, the Olympic records being challenged and broken, and the solemn opening and closing ceremonies that celebrated achievement and sportsmanship.

According to the official 1973 Olympic Games Information Booklet, prepared by Peter B. Dowling, Director of Athletics, “the original purpose of the Camp Jewell Olympics was to stimulate enthusiasm and clean competition in the fifth and sixth weeks of camp, thereby alleviating the traditional sixth week ‘staff slump.’ This can be accomplished by involving campers in the competition and stressing the Olympian attitude and the importance of good sportsmanship. All campers must participate in at least one event. This event does not have to be athletic in nature, as there will be contests in cabin inspection, crafts, table decorations, flag making, and others. This year we are making ng Camp Jewell Olympic History. Girls (in their first summer at Jewell) are adding a new and refreshing dimension which is bringing about much change. Remember, any cabin in any unit nit can win the games. Good luck!”

The Torch Runner (CJ History Cont...)

One summer I was chosen to run in the Torch Relay that marked the official start of the Olympic games.

We were dropped off at 1/4-mile intervals along the road between Winsted and camp to wait for our moment of glory. After what seemed like hours out there all alone, I finally caught glimpse of the Olympic flame coming towards me. Rising from the center of a small cluster of runners was the hallowed torch - a tin can nailed awkwardly onto an old baseball bat.

A feeling of pride overwhelmed me as I grasped the wooden handle and sped ahead, even as I dodged bits of oily rag that spewed from the can. My feet hardly touched the ground as I dashed my 1/4 mile and passed the torch to the next runner. Later, with

the entire camp watching, the last and oldest runner carried the torch onto the field to light the Olympic flame and we all stood in awe as the flames leapt into the evening sky. The games had begun. - Jay

Hannah recently If you would like moved from the US to join Andy in the UK and is loving to reconnect with her new home. Andy is the founder/director of a local day Hubert, he has camp, Camp Glide, where he works to bring a little of the graciously provided American camping spirit to kids in the UK. his contact details!

Social distancing is fun and all, but we’d rather be at camp so we could dance with all of our friends at Thunderdome!

Esther Nix “Its been a Long and Winding Road” I am happily living in Salem NY now. I work part time at an art community called SAW ,Salem Art Works. And part time self employed in residential cleaning. I am so glad to still be a part of Camp Jewell.

Social distancing is fun and all, but I would rather be at Camp Jewel going on a long horseback ride and camping out under the stars with all my good friends.

This April we began the decommissioning of Cabin 3, the first cabin that will be replaced to make way for the next era.

Buildings often have a spirit to them as if they are another being in our camp environment. Like an old house being moved out of, there is an emotion to seeing it go. As we continue to build new cabins, we’d like to take a moment to appreciate all of the time and effort that went into constructing, updating, and maintaining these buildings, without which Camp Jewell would not be what it is today!

DID YOU KNOW? - Each of the original 13 cabins served more than 35,000 guests

While we are sad to see our cabins go, we are excited for our plans for the future. Our next cabin, which we have just broken ground on, will be completed by the end of this summer. After that, we will be removing two more original cabins to break ground on the next two new cabins. All in all, donations and grants of $1.5 million dollars will allow us to complete this next round of construction, but our ambition doesn’t stop there!

With an eye toward the next 50 years of Camp Jewell, we will be looking to replace or renovate every cabin and building at camp, but we need your help! If you would like to be involved in our capital campaign, or donate please contact camp at Camp.Jewell@ghymca.org!
