Remek, Ph.D. 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Chapel Lower Level Overview A despacho is both a prayer bundle or offering and a form of “living prayer” developed by the Q’ero shamans. It is their primary way of expressing Ayni, or “sacred reciprocity” with the universe. To create a despacho, a shaman endows materials with spiritual energy, adds to these items the specific energetic concerns of those for whom the despacho is made and arranges the whole into a mandala-like structure that, when sent forth or “dispatched”, will carry human aspirations and intentions into the invisible, energetic realms. Whether constructed for an individual or for a community, a properly “dispatched” despacho effects an energetic shift in the fabric of the cosmos. It is one of the shaman’s most powerful tools for manifesting and for restoring balance and harmony to the universe.

In this workshop, you will both learn about the symbolic materials and basic types of despachos and also have your personal desires and concerns actively addressed by participating in a despacho ceremony yourself. You may use your newly acquired skills to create despachos for private use and for the concerns of others, or with your cultural experience broadened, you may simply return to your customary rituals with an awakened awareness of the different ways in which universal elements of prayer can emerge in different traditions.

Susan Remek studied energy medicine with the Four Winds Society, graduating from the Light Body School in 2016. She then toured and practiced ceremony with the Q’ero shamans in Peru’s Sacred Valley in 2017. She has participated in a large number of Despacho ceremonies, understand and appreciates the soul of the work, and agrees with the Q’ero shamans that now is the time to share their treasure with the world. Raised in a family of physicians, Susan credits her openness to shamanistic healing to a dramatic personal experience, to her “day job” with a parapsychologist, and to the call and encouragement of her Zulu guide. A student of English and religion, she earned a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago for work in literature and spirituality.
