Last week we had a HUGE assembly to celebrate the announcement of our new student leadership team for this year.

I would like to thank Megan and Ben, the school captains from Castlemaine Secondary College, who came and presented our leadership team with their badges. Megan and Ben talked to the assembly about the importance of leadership and let us know the qualities of good leaders. They were terrific representatives for their school, not to mention great role models for our student leaders. I had a chat with them after the assembly and they said they would be keen to have more contact with our student leaders throughout the year so hopefully we can get that happening.

Breakfast Program

The Creek breaky program is back! Karen is serving yummy toast, cereal, yoghurt, spaghetti/baked beans on toast (and the odd pancake or two) on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:20am to 8:55am. Thankyou to the families who have donated milo & jams for the breakfast program.

Here and Happy Award The Department of Education recommends that schools strive to achieve at least 95% attendance for each student.

Parent Club News We have a BBQ booked on the 24th March in Castlemaine so we need a BBQ logistics manager, sales experts, goodie production wizards and we can always use cash donations , which help to lower our expenditures. If you would like to help in any way, I would love to have you on my team for this event. Please let myself or the office know if you can help with this event.

Parent Club Fundraiser Bags "Class of 2017" Commemorative Carry Bags In the coming weeks, during Art class all students will be drawing their self portrait for a special "Class of 2017" carry bag. Students and staff from both Campbells Creek & Guildford will participate.

The Parents Club will be selling the bags for $17 each or you can save by ordering more. They make a lasting memento to remember classmates, are amazing as gifts for parents, relatives and special friends or just use them for library bags!

Order forms will be circulated to families and a sample carry bag will be on display in the front office early next week.

Order forms need to be returned with payment by Friday 24th March.

Every week we monitor the absence rates of students and we give away a weekly award to the class with the highest attendance for the week. This award is known as the Here and Happy award. At the end of the term, the class with the highest attendance across the term wins a whole class reward.

Please speak to your child’s teacher about any absences you know are coming up. Please call the office on 54722180 to notify the school your child will be absent for the day.

Alternatively, you can visit our school website http://www.campbellscreekps.vic.edu.au and click ‘contact us’ to fill in an online form. You can also fill in a form on our smartphone app ‘Tiqbiz.’

Three years ago we were a trial school for the national computational thinking challenge, Bebras. We have participated in the challenge every year since and next week, all students in years 3-6 will be participating in this year’s version.

Students can work individually or in groups of up to 3 students. They are given 15 questions ranging in difficulty from easy to hard. The questions test the students’ ability to interpret, analyse, think and problem solve. These are all skills we aim to develop in all of our kids here at Guildford and the Creek. We want our kids to be the thinkers of the future!

What is computational thinking?

Volunteering in our schools

Computational thinking enables us to analyse and develop solutions to complex problems and then to use technology to create or innovate new processes and solutions. Careers of the future will require these skills at every level. Developing computational thinking helps to develop vital skills such as resource management, analysis, creativity and safety.

As per our volunteers policy (and the Department regulations), all people volunteering in our schools who are over the age of 18, must have a Working With Children Check.

To apply for a Working With Children Check you simply make an application online: http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/ The office ladies are more than happy to help you with your application. Once you have evidence of your application, you bring that in to the office and a copy goes on our files.

The challenge This challenge is free and certificates will be provided to students upon completion. A permission form has gone home about this challenge already.

Each week we will post a new practice problem for families to discuss. #1 Easy- Beavers bicycle culture The inhabitants of Beaver City like to ride very colourful bikes.

The city council has listed all acceptable bicycle parts. They have also published a set of instructions for assembling bicycles.

The image on the right shows how the parts may be combined to create a bicycle. You always start with the tyres and then choose which arrow to follow to build your own personal bike.

Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) If you hold a current Centrelink pensioner concession, Health care card number (CRN) are a Foster parent or Veterans affairs pensioner card, can you please complete the CSEF form (sent home with students today) and return it to the office as soon as possible. If you are eligible for CSEF, you will be entitled to $125 that can be used for camps, sporting events or excursions.

If you have any questions regarding CSEF, please speak to Glynis or Jo.

We have had a brilliant suggestion come in to us after our article in last week’s newsletter about the talented parents we have in our community who help the school out with jobs. A suggestion has been made to develop a directory of resources with lists of businesses and ‘go to’ people we can use in our own local community; a ‘yellow pages’ of our own families. (For example, if you need an electrician, you could use Otis and Romilly’s dad Dan Park or if you needed a bottle of wine you could speak to Mathilde and Oliver’s dad, Steve Cross, or if you needed some lipstick you could speak to Travis’ mum Sam Arthur or even Ruby’s mum, Kirsten Pender).

Castelmaine State Festival The Castlemaine Festival is fast approaching and this year, as in previous years, all schools in the area are attending the school festival program. We will be heading into Castlemaine on Tuesday 21st March from 9 – 3.00 pm to participate in a variety of activities run by the Castlemaine State Festival. The students will watch a live performance and participate in visual arts activities during the day. The cost of the excursion is $12.00.

Castlemaine YMCA After School Care The Castlemaine YMCA After School Care program is held at Campbells Creek PS every night after school.

It runs from 3:30- 6:15pm.

This program runs in the Banyan Building every night and on holidays as well.

To enrol your child in the YMCA After School Care Program you need to call 0499 983 828 before the day you would like your child to attend the program.

Flatpack Fridays We currently have a dedicated group of students who have been learning to put together flat pack furniture each Friday. After whipping up all the new classroom bookshelves, they have run out of projects and would like to offer their services to our school community. If you have anything you need put together, come in and speak to the Friday Flat Packers about it (contact Tracy Trait or the office ladies).

PGL Camp Yesterday I woke up excited because I was going to school and going on a bus to PGL camp. Mrs. L wrote a number and Mrs. Walsh drew a number on my hand. When the bell went we hopped on the bus. I sat at the back of the bus.

We got there first. We did challenges and we did aero ball and we did a song. The bus came and my mum came and we went home. By Maycee PGL Camp: Yesterday I went to PGL camp. We went on the bus and I sat next to Marnie. PGL camp was very fun. Mrs. B was our leader. My number was 1. We did some very fun activities. By Romilly Yesterday I woke up and I got ready to go to school. When I got to school I went to Mrs. L for a number. I was in number 2. When the bus came I sat next to Ella who was in group 2 as well. When we got there we had play lunch, The first activity group 2 did was aero ball. Aero ball is playing basketball on a trampoline. Then we had another snack and did the next activity. The next activity was team challenges. Team challenges is working together. Then we got on the bus to go back to school. It was home time when we got off the bus. Best Day Ever: On Monday it was not an ordinary school day. It was PGL camp day. I was so excited I went to school. When I got to school the teachers were writing numbers on peoples hands. My number was 1. I saw Holly, Elly, Maycee Amber and Tai. We all played until it was time to get on the bus. I sat next to Scarlett. By Indie

PGL Adventure Camp: Yesterday I woke up, I had breakfast and I got dressed and my mum dropped Archie and I at school. When I got to school Mrs. L put a number on my hand. I was in group two. Lylah was in my group and the teacher was Nicole.

We got on the bus and went to PGL camp in Kyneton.

When we got off the bus we had a play, then we went to our activity. My first activity was the aero ball. It was fun.

Then we had lunch with the whole school, then we went off to another activity. Then we got back on the bus and went back to school. I had a fun day. By Ella

FUNDRAISING EVENT Castlemaine Swap Meet

Expression of Commitment (Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th April, 2017) Campbells Creek PS has, for many years, been involved in this fundraising activity which earns the school a donation of over $1000 which goes towards resources/facilities/programs for the children of the school.

This year, the dates for the meet are in the middle weekend of term 1 school holidays.

We are calling for Expressions of Commitment from our families who will be able to assist us on these days. If we are unable to provide sufficient volunteers, we will be advising Castlemaine Lions Club that we cannot support them this year.

Cybersafety Information for Parents In last week’s newsletter we alerted parents to some of the games and sites our young people are currently using that have access to open chat facilities. On any sites, apps, games that have access to chat facilities, there is the potential for predators to be lurking online, attempting to ‘groom’ unsuspecting children. (We have seen the evidence of this with our own eyes and were shocked at just how easy it is for unknown people to win the trust of young internet users!) The information below might be useful in helping you to be aware of what to look out for if your child is chatting to people online.

How to Recognize Grooming

By Anne Collier Sometimes the very reason kids and teens blog and spend time in social-networking sites is to “meet new friends.” So it’s not always easy for them to tell when “new friends” have bad intentions, and research consistently shows that about 20% of online kids receive unwanted sexual solicitations.

“Grooming” is the way sexual predators get from bad intentions to sexual exploitation. Basically, grooming is manipulation. It’s the process pedophiles use to get children they target online to meet with them offline, the simple goal being sex.

Sometimes it involves flattery, sometimes sympathy, other times offers of gifts, money, or modeling jobs. It can also involve all of the above over extended periods of time. That’s why it’s called “grooming.” Experts say the short-term goal of these manipulators is for the victim to feel loved or just comfortable enough to want to meet them in person, and these people know that sometimes takes time. That’s ok, they’d say, because groomers tend to have a lot of patience, and they also tend to “work” a number of targets at once, telling all of them that they are “the only one for me.” You can imagine how well that can work with kids seeking sympathy, support, or validation online.

That’s about as general as we can get, because grooming is carefully individualized. Groomers design what they say as they go along, tailoring their flattery or offers as they learn about the victim. Here are some tactics kids can watch out for (these are themes for which there aremany variations, tell your kids):

“Let’s go private.” (leave the public chatroom and create a private chat or move to instant-messaging or phone texting) “Where’s your computer in the house?” (to see if parents might be around) “Who’s your favorite band? designer? film? gear?” (questions like these tell the groomer more about you so they know what gifts to offer – e.g., concert tickets; Webcam, software, clothes, CDs) “I know someone who can get you a modeling job.” (flattery, they figure, will get them everywhere) “I know a way you can earn money fast.” (one of the tactics that snagged Justin Berry, 13, into what became his Webcam prostitution business, reported by the New York Times) “You seem sad. Tell me what’s bothering you.” (the sympathy schtick) “What’s your phone number?” (asking for personal info of any kind – usually happens at a later stage, after the target’s feeling comfortable with the groomer – but all online kids know not to give out personal info online, right?!)

“If you don’t… [do what I ask], I’ll… [tell your parents OR share your photos in a photo blog / Webcam directory / file-sharing network]“ (intimidation – used as the groomer learns more and more about the target) “You are the love of my life.” (what “Amy,” 15, fell for before traveling out of state to meet someone who’d groomed her – see “Amy’s Story” at Netsmartz.org)

Being aware of these tactics – and the fact that groomers are self-taught experts in 1) getting kids to reveal their needs and desires and 2) tailoring messages to those interests – can go a long way toward protecting kids from sexual exploitation online. It’s also a great exercise in critical thinking, the best safeguard and “filter” a young Net user can have.

On the holidays I was very lucky to introduce to Sophie and Max a new member of the family. Boomer, who is named after Boomer Harvey the infamous North Melbourne football player, entered our household on Australia Day. She was purchased from a farm near Tooberac which is near Heathcote. My family has a sheep farm at Yandoit and over the years we have adopted many Kelpie dogs from the same farm.

Boomer is the niece of my Mum’s dog Jessie which is very special.

Boomer is a ‘true aussie’ dog being a Kelpie and is now coming to visit Guildford Primary on regular occasions. She is loving being able to spend time with the students, especially during recess and lunch play. Boomer has taken to rounding up our chickens and bringing them into the classroom which can be problematic at times but also creates a very unique learning environment for the Guildford students.

The students are brilliant at looking after Boomer, entertaining her at recess and making sure she is getting lots of exercise which is exactly what the Kelpie breed needs.

Lunch Orders Remember we have lunch orders each Friday from the Guildford Store. I have attached an order form to this newsletter. Orders can be given to Kerry or myself on Thursday or you can order directly from the store.

Orders are preferred the day before so that the ladies at the store can ensure you receive what you have ordered.

Library Welcome back to Mrs. Mac this week.

Mrs. Mac dislocated her shoulder on holidays but has now fully recovered.

A reminder to send along a library bag for library this year. Mrs. Mac. has asked that all students have a library bag to ensure the MARC van books are protected. Please write your child’s name on the library bag and send in ASAP. Library is on Thursdays each week from 9-10.30 am.

Athletics Program On Monday the students started a four week athletics program with their coach Garnet.

The students are learning specific running techniques and fitness strategies. On Monday I am wearing my fitness apparel and heading out to join in with the students. Let’s hope I can keep up with them!

Festival A reminder that we will be attending the Castlemaine Festival Schools Program on Tuesday 21st March. Notes went home last week so if you could send them back ASAP. If you need a new note, please ask Kerry or myself.

The students will be travelling by car with Kerry and I on the day so there is no bus cost. The cost for the day is $10.00 which includes many fun and creative activities.

Poppy Making We are very lucky this year to have the Senior Citizens group coming in on Wednesday 22nd March and teaching our students how to knit and make woolen poppies to contribute to Anzac Day celebrations this year. Maria Derrett, a neighbour of the school, has helped to make this happen and the ladies will be coming in in March to volunteer their time with our students. Hopefully we will be able to make some poppies in time to donate to the carpet of poppies displayed in Federation Square in the Melbourne CBD each year on Anzac Day.

Maker’s Space Calling out for materials again for our Maker’s Space hour which will be on Fridays. We need boxes of all sizes, bottle tops, wool, string etc. If you can donate anything we would greatly appreciate it. Last week we started making a box city which we will be working on over the next few weeks.

Cross Country Our Interschool Cross Country will be held on Wednesday 15th March. The Cross Country is for grades 3-6 students.

It is held in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens and students participate with students from many other schools in the district. We will be starting our day at Campbells Creek on this day, all students, as different grades will attend the cross country at different times during the day. We will return to Guildford at lunchtime.

I will send a reminder note out closer to the date.

Book Club Our new Book Club catalogue was sent home with students yesterday. All orders are to be back by Friday 17th March. Remember all orders made by our students contribute to credit we can use to buy books for the school.
