Ray Wong with his new candle-making equipment. Photo by Aleister Gwynne

Minding his own beeswax Aleister Gwynne Black Press Raymond Wong has found his dream job. That’s hard enough for anyone, so it’s all the more remarkable because the 24-yearold has autism. Wong, with some help from his family and local social workers, has been able to turn what started

as a simple hobby into a career. He began by making individual beeswax candles using only a stovetop kit and he enjoyed it immensely. Autism is a mental condition characterized by difficulty with social interaction and compulsive behavior, so it is very hard for an autistic person to find and hold a job

at all, let alone one they actually like, said Wong’s community support worker, Scott Plummer. “The difficult thing with autistic people is engaging them, if you can’t interest them, it’s not gonna fly, he said. Since the purchase of a $1,500 wax dispensing system, Wong has been able to mass produce his

candles, and is now looking to sell them. His candles are being displayed at North Island College and the Lil’ Amigos nursery in Port Hardy. His candles will also be displayed at the Port McNiell Fair Dec. 7. “At the moment these are the only places, but obviously we’re looking for more opportunities, said

Calling himself “Just a Gumboot Fisherman who sells fish hooks for a nickel a piece,” Bob Wright took the stage at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa Nov. 23 to accept his award into Canada’s Tourism Hall of Fame. He was introduced by Tourism Victoria President and CEO Robert Gialloreto, who said: “Mr. Wright was born in Regina Saskatchewan and raised in Edmonton Alberta. In 1950 he moved to Victoria BC. Luring him to the West Coast was great salmon fishing and a job at the local newspaper. This is where he began his tourism career with just six hundred dollars and a dream. While fishing in a small aluminium boat off Oak Bay, Bob came up with the dream of

Wright has built an empire consisting of 21 divisions of resorts, marinas, restaurants and attractions in three countries. Employing nearly 1000 staff in many BC communities alone, Wright’s British Columbia Resorts host guests and celebrities from all over the world each summer season including the President of the United States, Goldie Hawn, and Bob Hope to name a few.” In his acceptance speech, an emotional Wright gave credit to his employees saying: “I am very fortunate to have a team of incredible people surrounding me at the Oak Bay Marine Group. They are people who share my passion for this amazing industry and understand what it takes to not only just succeed through difficult economic times, but to excel and grow.” I am grateful to each and every one of these people, and I share this award with them.” Born in Regina, Saskatchewan and Continued on A5

raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Wright has lived in Victoria since 1951, where he began his tourism career by operating his own fishing charters for a dollar an hour. Fifty years later as Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of the Oak Bay Marine Group of Companies, Wright has divisions in Canada, the United States, and the Bahamas. The companies are involved in many aspects of the hospitality industry including hotels/resorts, sport fishing, eco and adventure tourism, spas, restaurants, campgrounds, marinas and attractions. Employing nearly 1,000 staff in many communities, Wright’s British Columbia Resorts host guests from all over the world each summer season. Long before the advent of the internet and social media, Wright’s marketing skill (and budget) helped put British Columbia on the map from a global tourism perspective with his marketing initiatives reaching far beyond North America.

Most recently, Wright donated 11 million dollars to the University of Victoria for scientific research on climate change. The Bob Wright Centre for Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is a world class facility that provides a home for the university’s internationally renowned climate change researchers. With a lifelong affinity for the sea, Wright wants to ensure that our oceans are healthy for all future generations. Under his leadership, the Oak Bay Marine Group quietly supports many organizations in various communities, from Ucluelet, British Columbia to Long Island, Bahamas. Wright has been instrumental in marketing British Columbia tourism worldwide for over 50 years. His persistence has resolved many challenging issues relating to the hospitality and sports fishing industries; paving the way for new operators, and collaborating with the entire sector to ensure British Columbia continues to draw tourists from around the world.

with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com The wind and rain has kept many of the Campbell River and Courtenay anglers off the water last week. Feeder Chinooks are fished for around the Hump and Cape Mudge light. I had a chance to speak with a local fisherman at the Oyster River bridge, Steelhead should be entering the river within the week and water levels are very fishable at the moment due to the heavy rains. Early runs of Steelhead can be expected in the Campbell, Quinsam and Nimpkish rivers. This time of year, anglers can concentrate on the cutthroat fishery. Fishing from shore has been good at the local lakes in the area; boat p ssible because of the hhigh winds. fishing has been impossible Brett Donovan and Amber B Schmidt are new managers at Sc the th Big Rock Motel in Campbell RRiver. Students sample aboriginal culture Lindsay Chung Black Press CUMBERLAND — Dreamcatchers, button blankets and woven sashes are important pieces of aboriginal culture in Canada, and Cumberland Junior School students recently had a chance to learn all about these and other aspects of aboriginal culture and history during a day-long Aboriginal Day celebration at the school. Every student in the school had a chance to participate in six workshops that touched on aboriginal culture from near and far. Presentations included bannock with Carrie Dumont, Nuuchah-nulth whaling with Roland Ginger, Lahal with Vanessa Isaac, cedar with Suzanne Camp, games

He brought items such as clothing, bentwood boxes, trade beads and dentalium shells, which were a form of trade. “It’s an oral history, our songs and stories we told at potlatches or to children while they were eating food,” said Ginger. “Some of the students have aboriginal ancestry, and some have been to the west coast — Tofino, Bamfield, Nootka Island — which is mainly what my slideshow talks about.” Ginger was happy to be part of Aboriginal Day, and he felt he learned as much from the students as they learned from him. “For me, I love teaching and sharing my knowledge, and there are always students who bring something new,” he said.

So much bad science being published Well, as a colleague wrote to me recently that with all the bad science being published lately it is impossible to respond every time, to read the science and come up with a response that ends up sounding very similar to the last rebuttal any way. The biggest problem with all of these so called studies is that the researchers are evaluating nutrients as if they were drugs by using them as singular agents rather than as part of an overall nutritional support program. This research is based on the SELECT trial, (Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial). SELECT began enrolling patients on August 22, 2001 and enrollment closed on June 24, 2004 with over 35,000 participants. Participants stopped

taking supplements in were published in the 2008. Journal of the Medical The initial SELECT Association on Oct. 12 report published in 2011. tocopherol displaces the protective gamma tocopherol. The vast majority of vitamin E human clinical trials focus only on the synthetic alpha tocopherol form of vitamin E as if it were the only form that people require. How Gamma tocopherol prevents cancers: Gamma tocopherol scavenges reactive nitrogen species which can damage proteins, lipids and DNA. Gamma tocopherol also prevents cancer cells from reproducing and spreading by stimulating PPARgamma cell membrane receptors. PPAR activating drugs are being researched by pharmaceutical companies as anticancer drugs. Gamma tocopherol induces programmed cell death of prostate cancer cells called

apoptosis. Gamma tocopherol also reduces the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) in tumors promoting cancer cell death. (To date these same mechanisms work for colon, breast, lung and prostate cancer). Cancer is the end result of damage inflicted upon critical DNA genes that regulate cellular growth and maturation. Mutated cells in the prostate glands of aging males are already on the verge of maturing into full-blown cancer. With the research now in nutrigenomics it is well known that when genes swim in a healthy environment this mutation may be prevented or slowed and that is why taking a blend of antioxidants protects DNA expression. There are many

studies touting the protective effects of selenium and vitamin E to lower the risk of prostate cancer.

action-packed years onboard the MV Uchuck III. “We already miss Fred’s laugh around here,” shared Alberto Girotto, co-owner at Get West Adventure Cruises in Gold River, BC. “Guests would always poke their heads into the wheelhouse when Fred was on board just to see what was so funny.” Working on the water for over 42 years, Fred started out on fishing trollers from his hometown of Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Before joining the Get West Adventure

Cruises crew in 1994 as captain and co-owner, Fred has also served as captain onboard the pilot boat R.D. Riley and the coastal freighters Lady Rose and Frances Barkley out of Port Alberni. “Fred was a respected Captain who loved to share the beauty of the area and his job with our many guests. He also had a particular soft spot for Luna,” Girotto said, recalling the famous orphaned orca that frequented the Nootka Sound area. “Not only did he stop to let our guests see Luna but he also

kept an eye on him in the evenings, making sure that visitors acted responsibly around the whale.” Luna wasn’t Mather’s only memorable wildlife encounter during his years with Get West Adventure Cruises. Alone on the MV Uchuck III one evening, Fred heard some odd noises coming from inside the ship. After discovering that a door had been left open, he continued down below to investigate and was met face to face with a large black bear happily eating a dish of rice pudding. “Luckily, the bear was only interested in the pudding and both it and Fred took off screaming in opposite directions,” says Girotto. Now enjoying retirement, Fred plans to spend more time with his wife Glenda, travelling and working with his local church in Port Alberni. About Get West Adventure Cruises Get West Adventure Cruises provides daytrips and overnight cruises through some of Vancouver Island’s most spectacular West Coast scenery aboard the MV Uchuck III, a 136-foot passenger and working freight vessel.
