>>>The Illinois Department of Transportation fiveyear plan includes funds for a new bridge at Florence. By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press There was good news and bad news last week out of Springfield. The bad news was the state gas tax going up 19 cents, doubling the cost to 38 cents per gallon. In signing the bill, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said the gas tax had not been raised since 1990 and if smaller increments had been added on throughout the last 30 years,

the tax is now where it would have been. Gas stations and convenience stores were swamped Sunday, June 30 as drivers filled up their tanks before the increase took effect July 1. “We were crazy busy yesterday,” Karen Griggs, manager of Haymakers in Pittsfield, said. “The gas sales were unbelievable. Much more than we are on a usual Sunday.” But the good news is that some of that money will be coming back to the area in the form of a new, much-needed bridge at Florence. The bridge has closed for extended periods of time over the past few years for mechanical failures, structural issues and barge strikes. It was closed for a week last month, June 20-27,

after being struck by runaway barges.

“We were crazy busy yesterday. The gas sales were unbelievable.”

Karen Griggs Haymakers in Pittsfield The bridge is included in the Illinois Department of Transportation’s five-year plan but work will hopefully begin before that time. Jeffrey Myers, project engineer for the Florence Bridge,

said IDOT Is currently studying alignments and the environmental impacts with the Phase I Study. “We anticipate an advisory group meeting in the next couple of months, and a public hearing to present a preferred alternative this winter,” he said. Illinois State Senator Steve McClure said funding for a new bridge was in his top priority list for the newly-passed capital funding bill which provides money for infrastructure projects such as bridges and roads. McClure said the money for the $84.2 million project will be placed in a motor fuel tax “lock box” and the funds (See, NEW, A2)

By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press After 29 years of being on the west edge of town, Wright’s Auto Body will be moving to the downtown area. “I’ve bought the Heaton Building,” Peter Wright, owner of the business, said. “I bought the building and all the equipment, the lifts, the computer system, the diagnostics. I even bought the soda machine.” Wright said he was scheduled to close on the property, Monday, July 1 and will begin the moving process a little at a time, hopefully being established by August, the 29th anniversary of his business. He would like to keep his current business open during the move. “We will still do everything we always have, the body work, sales, my 24-hour towing,”Wright said. “I would like to expand into service work, oil changes and that kind of thing.” Although there is a plan for most of the property, Wright says he is not sure about the former showroom area. “I’d like to get another 4-wheeler franchise in there,” Wright said. “I just need to get everything else going first.” Wright said he is excited about the move and said Peter Heaton was great to work with in his securing the property. Wright said once he is established at the corner of Adams and Memorial, he will sell his current property.

By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press Paul Petty, father of Noah Petty, sums it up like this: “It’s hard to believe the worst day of your life and the best day of your life could come within a week of one another.” Paul Petty had accompanied his third son, Noah, to Bloomington last week, so Noah could attend Illinois State’s Big Man Camp. Paul Petty is also the Saukee varsity coach. Noah suffered a cardiac arrest Tuesday, June 25 and the rest

of the week became a tense, emotional time for the Petty family. “The team had broke for lunch at 11:30 and they eat lunch together,” Paul Petty said. “I ate my lunch and was sitting in my car which was probably four or five parking spots from the stadium entrance.” Petty said he usually films Noah when they are conducting drills or going one-on-one but when the session resumed at 1:30 p.m., Petty knew they were having a team meeting, (See, PETTY, A2)
