North Greene High School to potentially get new AC units By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press North Greene School Board members gave district officials the go-ahead to look into prices for two new rooftop air conditioning units for the 2002 portion of the high school at the July 17 meeting. “The unit that takes care of the biology room, and the unit that takes care of the front office both have a compressor out, North Greene Superintendent Mark Scott said. “We priced getting a new compressor put in the old units.
“I can’t see putting $15,000 into two units to replace a compressor when they are almost 20 years old, especially when you can put in two brand new ones for around $40,000.

ultiple law enforcement agencies are investigating a shooting that took place on July 18 in White Hall. White Hall Police Department, White Hall First Responders and Greene County Ambulance were dispatched to the 200 block of Israel Street, White Hall Police Chief Luke Coultas said. “Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a self-inflicted gun shot wound to an individual at this address, Chief Coultas said. “Upon arrival, officers located a 49-year-old male subject with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. The police have not released the victim’s name. The victim was transported by ambulance from the residence to the White Hall Fire Department and was then airlifted to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Coultas said the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit was called to process evidence at the scene. By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press It is that time again. The 35th Annual Greenfield Triennial Homecoming will take place Thursday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 3, with the majority of the events being held in Veteran’s Park on the square. Homecoming Committee Chairman Steve Hopper said the various committees, comprised of about 20 individuals, have been working on this year’s event pretty much since last year’s event concluded. “Contrary to what many people think, we do not take a twoyear break in between events, he said. “We continue to meet in the off years – we have fundraisers in which we raise money for the homecoming events because it takes quite a lot of money to put something like this on, and then in July of the year prior to the homecoming, we start meeting once a month and we start pulling everything together. The theme this year is Country Roots and Cowboy Boots. Hopper said the committee kicked around several ideas before setting on this theme. “We had all kinds of ideas thrown out by the committee as to the theme this year, Hopper said. “But, being we are a rural farming community – this one seemed most appropriate. Homecoming kicks off with an
afternoon program at St. Michael’s Hall at 2 p.m. There will be a different speaker each day from 2 to 4 p.m. Speakers include Doug Goodman, Nancy Thornton and Linda Reed. One might say the official kickoff, however, is the Homecoming Parade, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday with the line-up at 5:30 p.m. at the Mulberry Street parking lot, located across from the Greenfield High School Gym. Homecoming will be honoring one of their own this year. Longtime committee member John Thien and his wife, Betty, have been chosen as this year’s parade marshals. The Thien’s have been a member of the homecoming committee for the past 36 years, serving since 1983 in various capacities. Following the parade, there will be live entertainment on the square including country line dancers. The Homecoming Pageant will be held Friday night beginning at 7 p.m. culminating with the crowning of a new Miss Greenfield and Little Miss Greenfield. Prior to the pageant, the winner of the Cutest Baby Contest will be announced. Live entertainment will follow the pageant. Voting for the Cutest Baby Contest will be from Monday, July 29, through Thursday, Aug. 1. Decorated boxes will be on display at the United Community Bank (See, HOMECOMING, A2)
