JOHN JENKINS III WCP ADMISSIONS DIRECTOR (June 1, 1984 — August 13, 2015)

Mr. John Jenkins was a part of the West Catholic Prep family for over a decade. In the spring of 2005, John arrived at West Catholic Prep and assumed the responsibility of teaching English to juniors and seniors.

Facing the “slings and arrows of outrageous fortunes” did not deter John from completing his task. As the school year ended John pulled his eighth period through Orwell’s 1984 with courage and determination.

His second foray into the classroom occurred the next year when John moved from literature to writing. Being hired as our Principles of Writing teacher assured this young and eager teacher a secure place on the faculty. As his teaching career advanced, John presented himself as a strong father figure to our student body. He instilled mature virtues of responsibility and integrity to his classes. Since the writing class was given on the ninth grade level, most of the incoming freshmen had a strong relationship with John that for some lasted until they graduated.

In John’s next venue on the West Catholic Prep faculty, this young teacher became a young director of admissions for our school. Here John blossomed as he dealt daily not only with students but also with their parents. Since John is a father of two beautiful daughters, Bella (7) and Gemma (1), his connection with our West Catholic Prep parents was deep and true. As the admissions director, John would reach out with both academic and financial aid to as many families as possible.

He would always try to offer this assistance with a calm and self-effacing demeanor. One transfer student was the recipient of John’s personal largesse. This upper classman received not only financial aid but also a school uniform purchased by Mr. Jenkins.

A man with a tireless work ethic, outside of West John was a very active politician in Philadelphia and spent many hours representing his community of Mayfair. He was a proud member of the St. Matthew’s parish, where he served as a Lector at Sunday morning mass.

John died suddenly on Aug. 13, 2015. John was the Beloved husband of Carmen Jenkins and devoted father of Isabella and Gemma.

John will be deeply missed by the West Catholic Prep family. From his time in the classroom to his days and nights in the admissions office, his upbeat and strong personality will linger in our halls for years to come.

God bless you, John, and now rest in peace with our heavenly Father.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER Dear Alums and Friends, The highlights of this past spring included the fond farewell to our beloved Principal Sister Mary Bur, IHM, and the warm welcome to Mr. James Gallagher, our new and first ever lay principal.

Mr. Gallagher hails from Reading, PA, and lives in the Narberth community, a member of St. Margaret’s Parish. Jim is the father of four, including twins, and fully appreciates the role of parenting a teenager. He brings with him elementary and college experience, having served in both the public elementary level and as an adjunct professor at Saint Joseph’s University.

Welcome and every best wish to Mr. Gallagher!

The past year again was another one of growth—enrollment and financial support all climbing!

Thank you to all our donors for contributing a record amount of annual support in 2014-15.

Please know that although we are raising record amounts of funds, our expenses are great in our pursuit to deliver a top notch Catholic education in Philadelphia—so stay with us! This fall, we accepted 50-60 additional students, bringing total enrollment to 370 or slightly above. With this steady growth, we will approach the 500 number in the fall of 2016, which is about the right number for our programming.

The past three years have been extraordinary: enrollment and fundraising growth; a new Board of Trustees; a new Strategic Plan; a new principal; new academic programs; new partnerships with Drexel and Penn; building enhancements including a new engineering technology lab; a turf football field; a new student fitness center; a new school store; new campus signage; and more. WOW! In year four of this resurgence it’s time we solidify this growth and push the message through the community that West Catholic Prep is back among the finest Catholic high schools in Philadelphia!

We take very serious our commitment to delivering quality Catholic education. We invite you as members of the West Catholic family to visit us at 4501 Chestnut Street to see what is happening here and understand why we are so excited to get you involved. We wish you and your family a wonderful year ahead; a special one indeed as we welcome the Holy Father to the City of Brotherly Love!

WEST CATHOLIC PREP TEACHER OFFERED SONG

WEST ART TEACHER ON HGTV

Director of Campus Ministry and Theology teacher, Dr. Leda Reeves, loaned her musical talents during the Papal Liturgy offered on the Ben Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia on Sunday, September 27, 2015. Along with other local musicians, performed Sound the Bell of Holy Freedom as one the hymns offered during the Eucharist.

Dr. Reeves is an integral part of our community organizing school liturgies, leading student retreats, and moderating our Praise Dance ensemble. She can often be found reminding students to offer their lives as a living sacrifice to God. Marta Teferi ‘15 believes that “Dr. Reeves’ calm spirit is a driving force in the classroom—she engages us on a different level and challenges us to succeed.” We could not be more proud of Dr. Reeves. To God be the Glory!

Art Department Chair and South Philadelphia artist Patty Morgan was selected to participate on the popular HGTV show Flea Market Flip with childhood friend Melody Henrick. The show’s producers selected Patty and Melody based on the creative work the two have exhibited, and their episode aired on September 20, 2015, to a lot of fanfare right here on Chestnut Street.

Last fall Patty and Melody were whisked away from Philadelphia and taken to Maine to shop for goods, Connecticut to prepare the furniture, and Hell’s Kitchen to sell their finished pieces. Morgan wanted to win for her students, especially the hard working artists she supervises. “As a high school teacher, my biggest worry was losing. Our students and athletics teams work so hard to win for us and I wanted them to know that I was trying to win for them. They’re the reason I show up every day.”

The hard work obviously paid off because Patty and Melody won. Your students couldn’t be more proud.

INAUGURAL CO-ED GRADUATING CLASS 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY A MILESTONE In November, the Class of 1990 will celebrate its 25th year reunion at the Springfield Country Club in Delaware County. This event celebrates a milestone graduation as West prepares for an exciting series of events to mark the 100th year anniversary.

On September 8, 1989 West opened its doors at 45th and Chestnut St. for the first time to a co-educational student body as the result of a merger between West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys and West Philadelphia Catholic Girls High School.

Joe Nace, Reunion Committee Chairman, reflected on the upcoming reunion, “Looking forward to seeing classmates from 25 years ago!

The merging of the two schools was a pleasant surprise in

helping forge lasting friendships that hold dear to my heart, thanks West Catholic for providing us with such great opportunities not only in the classroom but in life.” Nace and his fellow 1990 classmates were the first to graduate from the combined school.

The transition was a time of adjustment for not only the students but staff and faculty as well. The Class of 1990’s commencement symbolized the birth of a unified yet diversified West while continuing the long standing tradition of Catholic secondary education in West Philadelphia.

According to Nace, most of the class have been notified about the reunion via social media and interest is high. A light dinner will be served followed by dancing and fellowship. There will be a special Mass on Sunday. Congratulations to the Class of 1990!

West Created the Best…of Friends

orn just one week apart in November 1919,

Alice McGuinness and Elizabeth “Libby” Grady were friends from such an early age that neither could ever remember a time without the other. Growing up on opposite sides of Taney Street in South Philadelphia, they attended Saint Gabriel Church and nearby Saint Aloysius elementary school. Together they continued their Catholic education at the new high school in the city, West Philadelphia Catholic Girls.

Continuing to practice their faith through their teenage years and young adulthood, they passed it on to the next generation, choosing Catholic schools for their children. Libby was especially pleased that her daughters followed her to West, and she was delighted to attend the 2012 graduation with her eldest, invited in honor of their 75th and 50th anniversaries of graduation.

Alice and Libby could certainly identify with many of the West students who face challenges and sacrifices in order to achieve a Catholic education. Although fortunate to attend West when it was tuition-free, it was a struggle just to come up with the 25-cent activity fee each year! Often, the girls walked the five-mile round trip between their homes and the high school, pocketing their nickel carfare to save for the movies.

After graduation from West, they worked together at RCA Victor, traveling by ferry from the Philadelphia waterfront to Camden, NJ. While Sunday Mass and Holy Communion were staples on the weekends, their continuing faith formation included retreats at Mendham Hall, run by the Sisters of Christian Charity. The girls’ favorite leisure activity was making the rounds of the dances hosted by a number of Catholic parishes, even winning a few jitterbug contests along the way.

That love of music and dancing continued throughout their lives, with Libby line-dancing at senior centers throughout her 80s and Alice winning song-lyric contests in her 90s.

Not long after Alice and her future husband, Tom Gaffney, began dating, they decided that Tom’s best friend, Jim Grady, would be the perfect match for Libby. Soon the two couples were married and on their way to raising large families, 13 children in all. Although they settled in different areas of Philadelphia and the suburbs, the families joined Alice and Libby in their ongoing friendship. Their children treasure shared memories of fun visits, especially the annual July 4th picnics and parades.

When Alice and Libby were no longer able to drive, their children ensured that they continue to see each other and celebrate special events together.

Memories of long-ago New Year’s Day parades in South Philadelphia were revived at Alice’s 85th birthday party in 2004, when the two strutted with real Mummers Club string band musicians; and memories of West days came alive in 2008, when they celebrated 71 years post-graduation at a reunion hosted by a classmate in Margate, NJ. After Alice moved to Florida in 2009, the friends continued to chat by phone and visit via Skype. The blessing in disguise of a hurricane evacuation in 2012 brought Alice to New Jersey and her final in-person visit with Libby. Early in 2014, Libby went home to the Lord, followed by Alice later in the year. Their families were comforted by the thought of the girls celebrating their 95th birthdays together in heaven—laughing, singing, and jitterbugging to Big Band tunes—reunited with their beloved parents, husbands, and the two children who preceded them.

Truly BFFs—best friends forever!

FUTURE DO YOU OWN A BUSINESS? The state of Pennsylvania offers a program allowing businesses to direct their state taxes to West Catholic Prep as opposed to Harrisburg. Called OSTC Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit, the program provides scholarships and financial aid for students who live in underperforming public school districts.

Over 95% of WCP students are from failing public school districts. Therefore your state tax dollars can go directly towards taking young men and women out of these failing schools and giving them a chance to excel here at West Catholic Prep. The process is as simple as filling out a one page form, and West Catholic can handle the rest of the process.
