HEALTHCARE Aspirational Design in Therapeutic Environments

THE HEALING LANDSCAPE

Therapeutic Garden, Tatton Flower Show

Camlin Lonsdale have a long tradition of working collaboratively with clients and end users to deliver aspirational change in healthcare settings. Key to the strength and success of these relationships is our ability to understand the particular challenges clients face and subsequently fund solutions through a creative response. Health trusts and private hospital developers are delivering sustainable development in the face of the most challenging financial and organisational environment seen in decades. Camlin Lonsdale have adapted to the new economic and political environment by offering a variety of flexible and expedient working approaches, in order to deliver bespoke, creative solutions and excellent value to clients, design teams and end users. Successful design and delivery of the vision can facilitate a change in the way services are provided in order to meet new clinical standards and guidances as well as the increasing public and professional expectations of healthcare environments. The therapeutic benefit to patients and staff from contact with well designed external environments and `nature’ is now well documented and investment in these areas is increasingly seen as an essential, particularly given the associated uplift in patient recovery rates.

STRATEGIC THINKING Strategic thinking and collaborative masterplanning is key to maximising the opportunities that a development presents and realising the full regenerative potential of large scale projects.

Camlin Lonsdale’s detailed understanding of policy and place will ensure that feasibility and outline proposals dovetail with wider strategic initiatives as well as unlocking the unique opportunities that individual sites present in order to ensure project optimisation. This can be invaluable in the development of business cases and essential to the success of the project. We recognise the value of strong conceptual thinking and visioning in order to yield simple but effective concepts in which to anchor the principles of the masterplan.

DELIVERY

In the tight cost envelopes that projects are required to work within to achieve viability, there is an increasing focus on specifications to deliver savings.

Clock Tower, Walton, Merseycare, NHS

With substantial experience in public realm design and delivery we are able to offer efficient product alternatives and detailing solutions which find savings whilst retaining design integrity. Inherent in our working practice is a depth of technical knowledge. Strong links with our clients and contractors enables us to assist with addressing supply side barriers and advising on effective cost savings whilst retaining design integrity.

SUSTAINABILITY & CLIMATE Awareness is crucial; researching and understanding the origins of materials and the effect construction has on the environment is essential to sensitive delivery. Sustainable Sourcing, BREEAM & CRC Bench-marking

The Woodland Centre, Rotherham, RDasH

We recognise the value that BREEAM Communities can bring to place shaping in the early stages of major project development and BREEAM for healthcare in which Ecology in particular can be key in attaining a particular rating. We are acutely aware of this issue in our design work and seek to embed ecological principles in all that we do. The just-published BREEAM New Construction 2016 for newly constructed buildings introduces new materials and elements requiring assessment for responsible sourcing. Camlin Lonsdale are able to advise on this and other sustainable sourcing issues, having an enviable track record in this regard.

Climatic Resilience The predicted changes in climate over the next 25 years and beyond will have wide ranging impacts on our environment that we need to be designing for now. A well designed landscape is critical in withstanding and mitigating the effects of floods, droughts, heatwaves, and increased rainfall intensity while providing costeffectiveness, but getting the design right is a complex challenge. Camlin Lonsdale is ideally placed to offer advice on these issues given the strength of specialist plant knowledge and strong links to the Environmental Consultancy University of Sheffield (ECUS).

MARKETING & FUNDRAISING

St Andrews Hospital, Northampton, St Andrews Healthcare

Many schemes for healthcare are funded independently through donations and charitable fund raising. To attract investment through NHS trusts and charitable fund raising you must inspire potential funders. We are experienced in producing supporting information for schemes bidding for external funding and have been involved in producing a variety of clearly articulated packages. We understand the varied requirements expected in funding applications especially as the numbers of applicants have risen and revenue pools have reduced. Our experience extends to working with local authorities and community groups to help achieve high quality schemes often on limited time scales and budgets.

Invertebrate ‘Biome’

The Merseycare TIME project (To Improve Mental health Environments) heralds a fundamental step change in the approach to mental health care provision in the Mersey area and is testiment to the increasing significance that policy makers are placing on high quality external environments as a mechanism for improving clinical outcomes. Camlin Lonsdale were pulled into the design team in June 2010 to assist with demonstrating the power of landscape (working hand in hand with the architecture) to provide therapeutic, non-institutional environments which reflect the diverse needs of patients, staff and visitors. Working with clinical and design professionals, as well as end service users, the proposed scheme encapsulates up to the minute thinking with regards to dementia and adult mental health care (including the learning disability pathway) and has been strongly shaped by the strategic vision of the health care trust. Publicly accessible areas are subtly separated by innovative security solutions & bespoke service user gardens designed to support their rehabilitation. The historic parkland context of the Walton scheme, Rice Lane, and its proximity to the historic Bootle Docks, provided ample inspiration and reference for a strong vision on the site which tunes in to the unique characteristics of the locality in the interest of enriching and connecting with service users.

THE WOODLANDS CENTRE Location

Rotherham

Project team Rotherham, Doncaster & South Humber NHS Trust (RDasH), Devereux Architects, Handspring Design The external environments of the ‘RDasH’ sites (The Woodland Centre and Swallownest) were designed specifically for proposed users’ requirements, namely Older Person Mental Health and Acute PICU. This involved gaining a deep understanding of the specific needs and opportunities for developing therapeutic gardens to aid rehabilitation.

Glade Garden, ‘Summer-nest’

Consultations with service users and occupational therapists were interpreted to create a diverse and unique range of therapeutic ‘glade gardens’, designed to be safe, secure, and non-institutional in character and scale. Gardens at the site provide opportunities to grow plants, walk off aggressive behavior, undertake quiet contemplation and managed group activities. The path network and surfacing is designed in accordance with good practice to reduce decision making in dementia patients, also providing a safe, even surface to walk (or fall) on. A significant amount of development was focused on refurbishing existing facilities. Courtyards were cleared of services and clutter and transformed into usable, tranquil and sociable spaces with high biodiversity value within tight cost and access constraints. Both schemes were completed in 2012.

Project team

St Andrews Healthcare

St Andrews Healthcare Group are founded on their forward thinking and pioneering patient care. Its 21 Acre mature parkland setting has provided a therapeutic landscape to its patients for over 170 years. Camlin Lonsdale were pleased to be invited by St Andrews Healthcare to assist in shaping proposals for a walled garden within the St Andrews campus which would cater for a broad range of service users and their visitors. Using planting and material palettes inspired by the main listed hospital building and the period in which the Parkland was set out gives the design a familiarity and sense of belonging. By carefully orientating the proposal we were able to add further value and link the former stable yard and glass houses, re-energising redundant structures and creating additional growing and learning space for the proposal. A key component of the project was a fundraising brochure needed to promote the Walled Garden proposal and raise the resources to allow the charity to deliver the garden successfully. Clear and compelling graphics were used to articulate how the design supports service user recovery and provides a unique, flexible and beautiful garden for a wide range of users with complex and varied needs.
