2020 | BAS Hons | Semester 1 | IYInterface Site analysis: identifying challenges and system networks The Disa River is severely polluted for reasons displayed in the infographic below.

Conservation initiatives pay more attention to Cape Town’s more obvious natural inheritance such as National Parks, Mountain Reserves and Main Rivers, however, the ecosystems of low-income areas are overlooked despite being extremely damaged due to inadequate infrastructure, high densities and invasive alien species. Moreover, these areas are high crime hotspots making it unsafe to walk along the river banks. Residents of IY suffer from extreme poverty and lack of essential resources such as food, clean water and toilets. These issues give rise to four objectives:

2020 | BAS Hons | Semester 1 | IYInterface Site activities: architectural imagination The pathways on site are important elements as it is a celebration of the journey to the river. One will see a variety of activities taking place on this journey, from children playing, football players, joggers, farmers and people relaxing on the lush banks.

Different buildings are strung along a pathway to the river, so the passive surveillance would make it safer for people to enjoy the rehabilitated river banks. These functions are: an Early Childhood Development Centre; a farm co-management centre with greenhouses; trade space for farm produce; and football spectator seating. By introducing a diversity of activities on site, it would be made safe through passive surveillance with the presence of different users: gardeners, teachers, students, collaborators, spectators, and sportsmen.

Project Brief Simulated Office is a semester-long group project as part of the Honours Programme at UCT. It aims to familiarise students with drawing documentation and local authority council building regulations and share the skills learnt during work experience in Fourth Year. My elective studio brief was to design student housing whilst abiding by local authority regulations, and consulting throughout the semester with Engineers, Quantity Surveyros and Architects.

My Role I lead the building design and concept development, was in charge of completing technical working drawings and created visual renderings. My other two group members, Bongi Sithole and Thando Phenyane assisted with precedent research, completed local authority drawings, building services, process diagrams and communications with Engineers and Quantitiy Surveyors (none of which are included in this document).

Project Concept: The design of this project aimed to address concerns regarding student mental health, and the formation of community and neighborliness within student residences. Good communal relationships invariably contribute to the happiness of a person, and so creating intra-communal spaces in which to dwell can provide a space for a student to connect with others. We developed a three-tier model that transitions from private to public space , called “intra-spaces”

threshold to the larger public space. This spatial transition could activate both the public and semi-public spaces, through providing vantage points to both spaces. This broadly follows on from the concept of “prospect and refuge” which addresses the alleged universal human behavioural psychological need for spaces which “allow “phenomenal and volumetric qualities of certain spaces” (Loewen et al. 1993; Scott 1993). Prospect and refuge theory evokes the primal necessity for safety and survival, conflated with a sense of spiritual fulfilment (Simon Unwin 2010) “blurring the distinction between base psychological needs with higher, self-actualizing aspirations”.

Materials chosen for their robustness, longeivity and maintenance factor. This is important in a buildings such as student residences where there is high foot traffic and frequent turnover of inhabitants.

Roof Design • The design of the roof was informed by the necessity for natural ventilation in the circulation and public areas. This makes the building energy efficient.

• • The curvature of the roof was designed for its sculptural and visual quality. This was an important element of the design as it is visible from multiple levels.

• • The aluminium louvres allow for air to pass through, and the glazed panels provide shelter from rain • • A large roof gutter running between the rooves is adequately sized for rain overflow and so that the roof can be accessible for cleaning and maintenance.

Autoconstruction of informal dwellings

Residents of Imizamo Yethu, an informal settlement, build shack houses out of waste materials such as corrugated iron and timber offcuts. However, these materials do not keep rain or cold winds out and are prone to fire and water damage.

This project develops a solution to the accessibility of materials in Imizamo Yethu by promoting the use of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the autoconstruction of homes in informal settlements.

Project Description: This design investigates a solution for the affordable housing backlog in the inner-city areas of Cape Town using a modular framework and cross-laminated timber panel system. Such a framework allows for growth and change over time according to specific needs of families.

2020 | BAS III | Semester 2 | Wynberg Housing Building Technology: Proposing the Use of Cross-Laminated Timber in South Africa Cross-Laminated Timber • Several layers (no less than 3) of lumber boards stacked in transverse directions attached with glue, nails, or dowels.

This project demonstrates the potential of using CLT in mass housing projects. South Africa has a large housing backlog and carbon footprint. CLT as an alternative to concrete or masonry offers a solution as an efficient, carbon neutral way of buillding.

At the time of this project, CLT was not (and still isn’t) widely used in South Africa. It is only available from one supplier: XLAM. It is not commonly known amonst engineer’s, architects and other disciplines in South Africa, nor included in the building codes, or taught in the curriculum.

Benefits of CLT • Low embodied energy and carbon footprint • Prefabrication makes it easy to assemble • Structural efficacy - a framed system is not required. In Cape Town however, structural framing is required for buildings more than two storeys to counteract lateral wind loads.

• High in-plane and out-of-plane strength and stiffness qualities - similar to that of concrete.

• Impressive fire rating with slow and predicatable charring rate • Good sound and thermal insulation • Cost savings and ease of assembly precision minimising errors.

• Easy construction site maintenance little to no noise or waste

Follies in t he Veldt

I participated in part of the construction of Afrikaburn’s Skylabyrinth. Afrikaburn is yearly festival taking place in the Tankwa Karoo Desert. It is famous for its temporary installations which are then burnt on the final evening.

Skylabyrinth is one of the few permanent structures.

This was a memorable experience, learning and meeting people from all walks of life, of different ages, nationalities and backgrounds, working from sunrise to sunset in the burning desert sun.

The labyrinth serves as a contemplative space, where through the act of walking one can access the higher self. The structure offers 400m of walking distance.

A temporary installation made of recycled TetraPAK. Even though this installation was temporary, the team hoped that this will prompt attention toward how to better address public spaces and embrace them as community assets. For two weeks we co-designed and built this structure through intensive creative workshops.
