English Education senior and President of Cameron’s Sigma Tau Delta chapter, Brooke Purkey said King has inspired her to help people in career as an educator. “I’m becoming an educator because I love to help people, “I want to become a support system for my future students,” she said. “Part of being that support system entails that I will encourage my future students to leave the world a better place than when they entered it,” “Being an English teacher, I have the potential to spark a change through literature with almost every lesson I teach-though it may be small and just in my class of twenty students, all great things have a beginning. Martin Luther King Jr. is proof that all it takes is one voice to get the attention of many,” “I hope to help students embrace their beliefs and find their own voice in the fight for a better future. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great inspiration in that fight.” Frey said tha King was a doer and a dreamer. “Martin Luther King Jr. was a doer, as well as a dreamer,” she said. “These two qualities are so rarely found in a single person, so he serves as a reminder of the possibilities that comes with embracing dreams and doing something about them.”

While the students may have the day off from classes and other university activities, many students from organizations all over campus come together for a day of service and celebration in honor of the life and work of King. Cameron Cross Country, Track, Sports and Exercise Science Club, Sigma Tau Delta, Black Student Association, Omega Zeta Theta Sorority and International Club were in attendance and made up over eighty Cameron volunteers. Cameron students partnered with other members of the Lawton community such as Girl Scouts and the Lawton High School Key Madison Lyda Club.
