The Cameron University Speech and Debate team completed their season with numerous awards at the Pi Kappa Delta Biennial National Tournament in Boise, Idaho.

The Forensics squad faced off against students from 72 colleges and universities across the nation. They all vied for Excellent awards, similar to getting a silver prize, and Superior awards, the highest award ranking at the tournament.

As a team, CU walked away with Excellent awards in Debate Sweepstakes and Combined Sweepstakes. They also added a 7th place Superior finish in Individual Event Sweepstakes, including three individual national championships.

Director of Forensics Sarah Collins commended her team for its efforts, especially considering the six-member squad competed against schools with teams of 1530 students.

“For the team to finish this high with only six competitors is simply outstanding,” she said in a press release, “[and] speaks to the quality of the work presented by our students.”

Sophomore Kris Mayfield brought home a national championship, earning the top spot in After Dinner Speaking with the

speech that won him the state championship in the event. He said the feeling of winning was unbelievable.

He added that the speech’s previous success put less pressure on him to perform it well at nationals.

“This was the first tournament where I stopped allowing myself to worry about it,” Mayfield said. “I had a moment where I thought, ‘The majority of the times I’ve messed up this speech, I had been going over it over and over again in my head before performing.’ So I stopped doing that, and I truly think that made me give a more confident delivery.”

Mayfield also earned Excellent awards for his efforts in Programmed Oral Interpretation and Public Forum Debate with his partner senior Sav Price. He rounded out his performance with a Superior award in Duo Interpretation alongside partner senior Savanna Sanders.

The two also showcased the event at the tournament.

Sanders won a number of awards in individual events, including three Superior prizes and three Excellent rankings. She also earned the national championship in the Oral History Project.

She said the hard work she put into it would lead to success, but she did not expect that she would get the title.

“I am incredibly thankful for what I got,” she said. “Eight years of hard work finally paid off with this national championship.”

Her other two Superior rankings were in Discussion and Broadcast Journalism.

Fellow senior Alex Amos received Excellent marks in those two events, while freshman Teague Fox received an Excellent in Broadcast Journalism.

Allmon said she joined the organization at the beginning of the fall 2016 semester to interact with people who shared her passion for English.

“Being involved in a group that their entire goal was to promote something I love seemed like a no-brainer,” she said.

Since joining Sigma Tau Delta, Allmon said she has felt a deeper connection to her English classmates.

“I knew most of the people I had class with,” she said, “but we didn’t talk or anything, and suddenly we’re going to meetings and showing up at events and sitting at bake sales together.

It really helps you make friends and stay connected.”

Allmon was excited to take on her role as president of Sigma Tau Delta.

“One of my big goals is one of my favorite charity events every year,” she said.

Taylor is also a senior Allied Health major who finds massages to be helpful when dealing with stress.

“Because of school, and life I experience stress,” she said. “Also, because I have

The massages are free whenever a student is doing their clinicals. When there isn’t a student doing clinicals, a licensed massage therapist does massages

at a discount for students, faculty and staff.

Sophomore business major Lisa Windom felt very relaxed after her massage appointment.

“I never had one,” she said. “I figured it would be a good experience.”

Windom said that massages are great for college students.

“It helps you relax,” she said. “If you can set aside a certain time in your schedule to have a massage, it gives you some stress-free time.”

When ‘just friends’ goes wrong Jacob Jardel

Content warning: This piece addresses topics of rape, sexual assault and related forms of sexual violence.

Entitlement can take a variety of forms.

In its most problematic, it can be someone assaulting an innocent person because “no” was not the preferred answer. Much of sexual assault awareness addresses this concept and emphasizes that no means no, sexually or otherwise.

But there seems to be a misunderstanding about what constitutes consent, if rape and assault statistics are any indication – much of which can trace its origins to something else seemingly innocuous.

That place is the “friend zone.”

It is a sort of emotional hellscape many people dread – particularly men, if the number of articles about the topic are any indication. There is no shortage of presumed ways to avoid this sort of relationship limbo, with self-proclaimed pickup artists and attraction doctors giving tips so anybody can get any person they want (usually a guy getting a woman).

Really, this notion that being someone’s friend is a lesser status than being that person’s lover is rather archaic. Moreover, it completely devalues the concept of friendship as a whole.

But the most problematic part of the friend zone is its basis in entitlement.

Reading up more on this concept, one of the popular reasons most individuals give for being in the friend zone is that they are just “too nice,” or a “nice guy” if we stick with the heteronormative skew this mentality seems to breed. If it weren’t for the fact that they were so nice, they might have a chance to be with (read: have sex with) someone.

It seems as if they think that being nice to someone is enough grounds to earn sex from someone.

If that assertion sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is. Being a decent human being to someone should not be a bargaining chip for sex – or any other favor, for that matter. Any assertion otherwise is archaic thinking at best, potentially murderous at its worse (as seen in the 2014 Isla Vista killings).

Yet, articles like a recent one in online publication “The Federalist” still gain traction because their authors still feel like there is a grain of truth in their statements.

In short, the author of the piece stated that men and women cannot be friends because men have an innate want to date and/ or procreate with any and all women they show some sort of

Awareness Series interest in. There is no other motivation to talk with a woman otherwise, he implied repeatedly.

Let’s forget for now that this idea not only devalues men to the pigs they say they aren’t but also clouds any intersexual discourse ever. And let’s forget the heteronormativity in play, since that is another, much longer discussion. There is another toxic mindset at play worth noting.

That mechanism is purity culture, or the idea that fornication is sinful while marital sex for procreation is the only acceptable form of coital discourse. This idea translates into some of the viewpoints many people have about non-sexual communication.

Take, for example, Vice President Mike Pence, who outright refuses to speak with a woman alone unless his wife is present.

Noble on the surface, the act implies any form of one-on-one between a man and a woman is, inherently, romantic or sexual – a mindset also present when addressing the friend zone.

The main difference between purity culture and the friend zone is the approach each concept has toward women. In the former, women are temptresses who try to lead men astray into

sin. In the latter, women are sources of sexual pleasure and little if anything more than that.

One thing is for certain, though: both have ties to sexual assault.

Purity culture is one of the reasons victim blaming is a thing.

The more a person hears that women lead men to sexual deviance, the more they start to believe it. Soon, any responsibility for assault appears to flee the perpetrator’s mind.

Meanwhile, “getting friendzoned” enough could lead some men to feeling like they deserve sex, even if they have to forcefully take it – at which point it becomes rape. Or, in the case of Isla Vista, it could lead someone to a killing spree because women never slept with him.

The fact is that sexual assault is the result of someone forcefully not taking “no” for an answer, and any unwanted sexual act constitutes assault – regardless of friend status or selfperceived entitlement.

Awareness begins with changing this mindset, starting with the heteronormative assumptions inherent in the friend zone.

In an interview with popular right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, Trump spoke highly about perpetually red faced pundit in glowing terms.

One of the more egregious examples of this action was his tweeting that “thousands and thousands” of Muslims publicly celebrated the 9/11 terrorist attacks, directly citing InfoWars. His claims of denial over the drought in California last year used language almost directly lifted from the website.

This trend is deeply unsettling. Jones has been a lightning rod for mockery in this country for many years, mostly playful, sometimes angry. But never has he appeared to be a legitimate figure in the political sphere – until now. right-wing conspiracy dispensary InfoWars.

sources. It is altogether something more grotesque. It is, to avoid mincing words, an openly conspiratorial dispensary of fearmongering hogwash with a perpetually shouting psychopath at the helm – a man who has been, and should be, roundly mocked by anyone with a rational mind.

A person with a rational mind would react with disgust at the suggestion that a mass shooting or a terrorist attack was a ploy to take away guns. That person might even be filled with righteous anger at the open contempt Jones has shown for the families of shooting victims by endlessly insisting, with no proof, that they do not exist.

And anyone with a rational mind would understand that someone who routinely shouts such phrases as, “Hollywood is owned by the Arabs,” or, “I don’t like them putting chemicals in the water that turn the frigging frogs gay,” might not be a credible source of information.

But the man with the highest office in our nation does not see it that way. In fact, he would seem to be more than happy to put such a deranged character on a pedestal while openly ignoring a large portion established news sources.

Americans cannot stand for this activity.

It is more than laughable: it is idiotic and destructive. It is an insult to the very idea of factual information and sources, and it should be grounds for anger.

It should be grounds for change.

Here is how the event turned out (spoilers ahead).

Triple H With great entrances come great responsibility for a good match, and these two did not disappoint.

The Game focused heavily on Rollins’ injured leg, while the Architect wrestled the match of his life against his former mentor.

Minus a few hokey moments, mainly the Pedigree power struggle and a flop that sent Triple H’s wife Stephanie McMahon through a table, this contest was a for sure match of the night candidate.

Needless to say, this storyline culminated brilliantly. Grade: A

Bray Wyatt (C) v.

Randy Orton, WWE Title

Never has a once-heated rivalry culminated in a fashion so underwhelming.

The action itself was good, near excessive finisher teases and all.

But some of the moments that accompanied Wyatt’s taunts were gimmicky, and the push to give Orton the title is a questionable decision at best, especially with the momentum he had built up previously.

Whatever WWE Creative was thinking, it did not work. Grade: D

Goldberg (C) v.

Brock Lesnar, Universal Title The powerhouses traded signature moves in a decent if unoriginal wrapup to the epic rivalry, with Goldberg landing four spears and a jackhammer interspersed throughout Lesnar’s 10 suplexes and two F5s. The match was quick and dirty, even if it was one of the duo’s longest matches. In a way, it was highly underwhelming, especially to cap a rivalry.

But it was an exciting match for only using four moves. Grade: B

Six-Pack Challenge, Smackdown Women’s Title This match really got the runaround from WWE booking.

Unfortunately, it showed in the performance.

While champion Alexa Bliss, eventual champ Naomi and fellow competitor Becky Lynch wrestled well with high energy, Natalya,

Mickie James and Carmella failed to live up to expectations. The match as a whole felt gimmicky, rushed and overall bland.

It was a poor expression of the show’s women’s division. Grade: D

this match made an addendum: “not like this.”

Some viewers could see this match as a way of showcasing the Undertaker’s weakness while upping Reigns’ stratospheric potential.

However, the match set-up was Roman Reigns v. The weak, and Reigns already has an Undertaker excessive push. Even with Taker’s resilience, the match felt wrong.

While the old wrestling adage Undertaker deserved better. “go out on your back” urges retired competitors to lose their final match, Grade: D-
