Hello!

Thank you for taking the time to look through my portfolio. My name is Cameron Castorina and I’m currently working on receiving my bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture. This major has a special place in my heart. It saved me from continuing my education in a field that I had no interest in and I’m grateful to finally study something that gives me a sense of purpose.

I take each project that I work on seriously, even if it does not come to fruition. We, as designers, have the power to change the world around us for the better. I want to use that power to develop stronger spaces for community interaction and eventually work my way into therapeutic design.

I see myself in five years working full-time in the field while continuing my education by studying for the LARE. My dream is to one day open my own firm specializing in therapeutic design. That may change, but no matter where I end up, I’m sure I’ve chosen the right path for me.

CONSISTS OF COMMERICAL MIXED USE RESIDENTIAL GREEN SPACE AND A BUS TERMINAL

As landscape architects, one of our duties is to design for tomorrow. This means we must take into account how the landscape will look like 5, 10, even 50 years into the future. To prepare us for this skill , my second year professor gave us the Athens 2042 project. We were given a ~1,500 sq.ft. parking lot and asked to design a community/neighborhood that could possibly be built 20 years into the future.

Our team found that the lack of options for alternative modes of transportation was a major issue in Athens communities. We decided to focus our design on this issue. The entire community is outlined with a major road for vehicular travel while the interior of the community is dedicated entirely to bike and pedestrian travel. We also played around with circular shapes for the green spaces to enhance a feeling of unity and connection for the residents living there.

SINGLE FAMILY HOUSING PLAN 2nd Year Spring Studio Third Project March 2022 - April 2022

Moving to a smaller scale, this project focused around residential design. We were given the task of designing a small property as well as creating the client that we are serving. I thrive in open-ended situations and like to go with ideas that are completely out there. So, I designed the “Cat Lady Paradise.” The property is entirely secluded on all sides to keep any unwanted visitors from terrorizing your fur babies as well as tiered cat towers flowing throughout the property so that there is always somewhere for your kittens to climb.

OPEN LIBRARY PLAZA

3rd Year Spring Studio Third Project March 2023 - April 2023

This plaza project was completed entirely by hand and rendered using markers and colored pencils. I believe hand graphics are my greatest strength and they can bring character to images and deliverables that are appealing to clients and potential stakeholders. This plaza is located between two lecture halls, so I wanted to play up the educational aspect and provide a space for students to study, socialize, and unwind after long classes. The central sculpture provides seating underneath and the bookshelf seating area provides a wonderful view of the entire space.

This was a semester-long project that all students participated in. We were tasked with creating a landscape and hardscape improvement package including a grading plan, construction details, a planting plan, and other documents. This shows off my ability to perform on the more technical side of this profession and provide accurate construction documents for contractors and clients.

PLANTING

This final project focused on one of the busiest areas in the UGA campus; Baxter street and the walkway along M.L.C. and the Tate Center. This space is often visited, but rarely admired. A wave of students flood through this area regularly to catch a bus to their next class or a quick bite to eat at the Bolton Dining Commons. I wanted to create a space that allowed for that, but also allowed for students to relax and wind down a bit before their next stressful assignment.

To provide a better idea of how the space would feel on a personal scale, I created these four perspective sketches. UGA is known for always looking forward and keeping a modern campus to intice prospective students to join. I wanted one of their busiest streets to reflect that while also providing safer conditions for alternative forms of transportation.

VONDERHAAR RESIDENCE Personal Client Summer 2022 During the summer of my second year, I placed an ad on Craigslist for amateur landscape design. I wanted to get more experience working with clients, as well as making some extra cash on the side.

The first client I received was for the Vonderhaar residence, a nice couple in Forsyth county building their dream home from the ground up. After a quick consultation and getting ideas for what they had in mind, I sketched up some ideas for what they could plant to improve the look of their future home as well as created a masterplan in Photoshop to get a more detailed idea of the kind of plants they would need.

LAWN MAINTENANCE OF ATHENS INC. Supervised Projects Summer 2021 I acquired an unofficial internship during the summer of my first year with a local landscape designer here in Athens, Georgia. I learned a lot about planting design, growth conditions, and general plant knowledge. However, I learned the most going on client consultations with my boss. She taught me a lot about client interactions and how to secure a job.

These are two separate projects that I worked on with my boss. The sketch is a small redesign of a backyard terrace garden. The planting schedule is an entire deisgn of a client’s home as well as a tennis court and golfing range installation. The things I learned in this internship I will carry with me.

LJA / ALLIANCE ENGINEERING Supervised Projects Summer 2023 Every student working for their bachelor’s in landscape architecture at UGA is required to take an internship during the summer after their third year. I was lucky to land one close to home and worked for the multidisciplinary firm, Alliance Engineering.

Since I was just an intern, most of my work consisted of redlining, planting design, and county ordinance review. Most of the projects I worked on, the company was not at liberty to share with the public just yet. However, our supervisor gave me and the other intern a “final project” at the end of the internship to show just how much we learned when it comes to land planning.

This is my own exploration and interpretation of a project that the company finished years beforehand. We were told not to look at their finished product and to come up with a design ourselves utilizing the knowldge we accrued over the internship.

This internship taught me a lot about work culture, efficiency, designing with intention, and how interconnected landscape architecture is with other professions. I’ll always appreciate the time spent working with the landscape architecture department at Alliance.
