Virtual Senior Celebrations

Seniors commemorated on the end of their high school careers

CONNOR SMITH Staff Writer It is not a secret that Covid-19 has impacted the Episcopal community and school structure greatly in the final weeks of the year. With this virus continuing to affect all aspects of life, many existing and incoming students might wonder if their fall semester will change as well. There are many predictions as to what may happen in the fall of next year with so many precautions on the table. At the time of writing, the EHS administration has not said what its plan for the fall will be, but there is agreement that leadership is open to many new ideas and is focused on safely introducing students back into school. One thing that is certain is a new Learning Management System called Canvas will replace the Finalsite portal the community now uses. Canvas is the product featured among many colleges and secondary schools across the country, and the switch will help introduce new ideas into the learning environment. Teachers will begin learning about this new software at the end of May with training led by Dean of Arts Dr. Jay Berckley. Other problems that could occur this fall are limitations in capacity and increased distancing. These may lead to alternative schedules for the student body to limit the number of people in contact with one another. In the case of masks, one teacher said the administration would likely follow the CDC and local authority guidelines. This suggests that if the pandemic continues into the fall semester, students may be required to wear masks on campus. There are many unknowns about the coming fall semester, and the administration is continuing to look for solutions and make plans. Junior Dean Mr. Mark Mitchell explains that “we’d probably be more accurate throwing darts in the dark than predicting what will happen with Covid-19,” but he “feel(s) like we’re ready for whatever happens in the fall.” For now, students can only hope that the fall semester will be the same as any other year.

The Episcopal Senior Traditions carried on in a virtual format this year. The administration, faculty, and staff honored these students with a memorable end to the year. Senior Tribute Chapel included a message from the class sponsors, Mrs. Michael and Coach Leisz, and Senior Dean Mrs. Adams and Reverend Holden. College T-Shirt Day consisted of a montage of videos of each of the seniors proudly flaunting their future colleges. Learn more about the Senior Celebrations on Page 2

Light and Shadow moves to e-publication BAILEY JUNELL Editor-in-Chief Light and Shadow is a student literary art magazine published by the advanced creative writing class at EHS. The magazine is sponsored by Ms. Hillary Houle who helps the student editors make it such a success. This year’s production editor was senior Catherine Andrews, and along with many other students on staff, she managed the submissions and worked hard on the publication process. The magazine itself is composed of student artwork and creative writing which is then paired together. The magazine typically comes out in school; however, this year for the first time, they released it as an e-publication. This edition of Light and Shadow was presented during the Chapel video on May 4 along with a slideshow that included all of the photos used within the magazine. The theme was announced as Find the Moment, expressing how students can connect to others through memories. In the Chapel video, various students whose work is in the magazine read their pieces. Sophomore Nicole Citardi then followed and read an excerpt from her story “It’s Strange.” Next, sophomore David Andrews read his piece “The Journey.” Then, senior Nico Zanotti shared his piece titled “Replenishment.” To finish, junior Samantha Wotring read the Light and Shadow editor’s piece named for the theme, “Finding the Moment.” Each year the Light and Shadow editors collaborate on a piece that correlates with the theme and title.
