9-10-11 Tomorrow is Grandparent's Day. My friend wants to have his daughter fixed; says if God intended for people to have grandchildren then He would have had one. 9-7-11 Like most every human being I want my basic needs met without great struggle or hardship, to live my life in a loving environment free from the harsh judgment of others. And like most every male I desire a good woman to adore me, care for me (and share her breasts). For a couple years I had all of the above, but then...I turned two.

Taking A Page Out Of Your Facebook... As a humorist, my jokes are my livelihood. So when I write something funny, and/or repeat it into a microphone, I expect to get paid for it, with one exception…the cyber-world created by Mark Zuckerberg. I have to come to view Facebook as a great writing exercise, and since the best friend a writer can have is a deadline, I have assigned myself a daily one. Every morning for the past year and a half, I start my day by coming up with something funny to post in my status update; my reward merely recognition from my peers (since the majority of people on my friends list are also comics) registered by them clicking their “like” button. Whereas some people get high on life I get high on “like.” I’m ashamed to admit how often I check my notifications to gauge the success of that day’s attempt at humor. I do this throughout the day. Everyday. I maintain status quo by being a status ho. Not to say that my efforts have gone totally without financial compensation; the more I write the more offers for work I receive based solely on my daily posts. In hopes of increasing this trend I have hired a company (Growthweaver.com) that specializes in social media marketing to design my new FB page. Not to brag, but it is amazing, more like a website really, featuring videos, interactive maps, and other stuff I did not think possible on Facebook. So now I have to leave my old page behind; I’ll get to take my friends to the new page, but not my old status posts. Rather than have my hard work simply disappear into cyberspace I decided to go through 18 months of daily posts and compile my personal Top-40, then give them to you here…for free…status for gratis. Enjoy! 11-28-11 Wow, the airports are packed this morning with people returning home from their holiday family gatherings. Here is a tip for the next time you have to see someone off: If you enjoyed their visit, tell them so in a note then insert it in the pages of the book they plan to read on the flight. However, if you don't want them to return, insert a sheet of tin foil CUT IN THE SHAPE OF A PISTOL, and then watch them set off the TSA alarms.

11-23-11 One of my favorite family holiday traditions is every Thanksgiving, when we have gathered in the living room, in between the National Anthem and kickoff, Grandma opens a bottle and says "Gentlemen, start your livers." It's funny every time. 11-18-11 My agent told me I just got cast in a new movie. I will portray a husband that has been married for over twenty years. Damn, I was hoping for a speaking part... 11-16-11 TRAVEL NOTE #188: Spent the last week in Seattle. It only rained twice. Once for three days and once for four. 11-14-11 Prince Charles turns 63 years old today. (However, the Royal Midwife reports he would be 14 hours older if not for those ears.) 11-10-11 I think every American should learn a trade, that way you will know what kind of work you are out of. 10-20-11 Just saw an ad for a mouthwash that guarantees to kill germs. Who wants a mouth full of dead germs? 10-17-11 People ask why I'm always smiling. It's because I never entertain evil thoughts... I let them entertain me. 10-9-11 Good God, the US Airways jet I just boarded is so old it has ashtrays in the armrests! The only thing that could be more disconcerting would be to find a cigarette butt with Amelia Earhart's lipstick.

9-4-11 As Labor Day approaches, let me be one of the first to say a big "Thank you" to the millions that labor so long and hard for our country: "谢谢 你。谢谢你". 9-3-11 There are holidays you look forward to the food - Thanksgiving. There are holidays you look forward to the drink New Years Eve & St. Patrick's. There are holidays you look forward to the entertainment - July 4th & Halloween. There are holidays you look forward to the gifts Valentines & Christmas. All the other holidays you just look forward to Monday off work... (Unless you are self-employed, then you just get to the bank and go "Oh, crap! It’s a damn holiday.") 9-1-11 Art Museums never expect you to bring your own art. Automobile Museums never expect you to bring your own automobile. But the damn Children’s Museum... What a scam! 8-30-11 I let my date last night pick the movie and she choose such a chick-flick that when I walked in the theater the seats were already down. 8-21-11 Wow, while experimenting in the kitchen I discovered that if you mix milk with lemon juice you get something worse than Congress. 8-12-11 A stand-up comic is the babysitter for someone else’s inner child. 7-17-11 If a man thinks for one second that he has figured out women... well, he has timed it just about right.

9-29-11 Was at a concert last night and some guy yelled "Hey sit down in front!" What an idiot, I don't bend that way.

7-2-11 The last time I drank tequila I was innertubing down the Guadalupe River... Just wish I had taken them off the car first.

9-26-11 Wow! Just discovered a new Communication App on my Blackberry; every user gets assigned a 10 digit passcode, and when you enter it they can hear you and you can hear them! Amazing! This could replace text and email!

5-28-11 If I owned a cemetery for magicians I would call it "ABRACADAVER."

9-19-11 Call me a prude, but I do not feel comfortable with nudity in movies... The seats are too damn cold.

Occasionally, there’s an opportunity for folks in the campus market to snag a talent that’s just on the serious upswing of a career that could become meteoric. While Chris D’Elia, costar of NBC’s sitcom “Whitney,” may seem to be one of those random actors popping up from nowhere with a lucky walk-on role, the fact is he is a practiced and honed standup comic, forged for over 5 years in the fires of Hollywood comedy clubs. Now, with the launchpad of a costarring role in a broadcast network primetime sitcom, Chris is ready to begin touring the country knocking out dates in earnest, and he has his sights set on the campus market. He’s been featured on “The Tonight Show,” Showtime’s “Live Nude Comedy,” Comedy Central’s “Live At Gotham” and his own CC half-hour special. (https://bitly.com/camdeliavid) In this exclusive interview with Campus Activities Magazine®, Chris explains where he’s been, what he’s up to now, and what it’s like to get picked on and like it. That’s what ingrained him with his edgy and socially acute style of comedy. You can catch Chris getting the business from his costar Whitney Cummings on Twitter (@ChrisD’Elia, @WhitneyCummings) but the ridicule casting his comedic insights into inner stone dates much further back.

ROOTS “My sense of humor absolutely comes from my family. My dad and mom are pretty entertaining folks; they were always making jokes and laughing. My entire family does it. Making fun of each other is sort of how we show love. When people kid around and make fun with me, it makes me feel accepted and now I can share that with everyone.

When I am on stage, it gives me that same feeling I had back when I was a kid making my parents laugh.” Don’t think Chris is going to come in and make your audience feel awkward – he’s

12, CAMPUS ACTIvITIES MAGAzINE®, JANUARY 2012

not Jeff Ross or Triumph, The Comic Insult Dog. “That’s not the style I perform on stage now, but I think that is the direction it came from. It’s not insult comedy, where I am singling one person out, but I guess it’s a broader form of insult comedy when www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

INSPIRATION There wasn’t one lightbulb moment where Chris decided to become a comic, though moving to L.A. as a teenager surely had its effect. “My dad showed me Pryor and Carlin growing up and now looking back, I don’t think there was anything I could have done besides be a comedian, the way my dad would always show me clips and I was so incredibly into it.” Chris floated for a while, both of his parents were in the film business and so he skirted the edges of a Hollywood career. “I was working for a while kicking around as a writer and an actor, trying to get jobs here and there and I always wanted to do standup. I was getting little to no work as an actor. It was so hard and competitive and I really didn’t know how to audition. I didn’t know anything about it. I made some money as a writer getting my scripts optioned, but nothing was ever actually produced and as a young guy, that’s what you want – for people to see your work.”

Interview & Story by Ian Kirby

I talk about the ridiculousness of people in general. I’m not really a one-liner ‘your mamma’s so fat’ comic though.” Chris’ style is observational and contemplative, but it’s also exciting and anwww.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

imated. “I like to talk about what I think and feel, in that sense it’s observational, but I am kind of physical as well. I never even realized it until I saw my first set on Tv and realized how much I move around.”

Finding himself in somewhat of quagmire, he decided to take a shot in the dark. “Kind of at a loss, I just went on stage and I was finally able to figure out who I was ‘in the business.’ It was sort of an epiphany like ‘Ahh, I’m a comedian!’ It clicked. I know that sounds kind of cheesy, but that is what happened. I went on stage and realized all at once this is what I want to do.”

I LOvE L.A. Originally from New Jersey, Chris moved to California with his dad just before his thirteenth birthday. “I moved out here when I was twelve,” he says. “with my Mom and Dad, but I feel like I’m an L.A. dude at heart. I was reborn when I

CAMPUS ACTIvITIES MAGAzINE®, JANUARY 2012, 13

started comedy here. I feel like many comics come from other places to L.A. and represent those other places, when many them are actually more L.A. than they realize. I like to represent that.” Big fish, small fish, big pond, small pond... L.A. isn’t the easiest place to get a standup career started compared to a smaller market with less competition, but unlike his current ease on stage might indicate, Chris wasn’t trying to beat his breast and jump headlong into the spotlight (of an oncoming train) before he was ready. “It’s weird, because many people come to L.A. after they’ve gotten really good at standup to take their career to the next level. Since I started here, I was trying to not be seen too early. I stayed away from the bigger clubs like The Laugh Factory, Comedy Store and the Improv on purpose. The

last thing you want to do is be seen too soon and blow your first impression.” Honestly he admits a mixture of luck played into this self conscious savvy that kept him from perhaps fouling any opportunities. “I didn't realize how smart that was. I was just playing it by ear. Now I realize it was a really good idea.” Chris was funny when he started performing standup. He became skilled at entertaining a crowd throughout a set though, not by walking through on blind talent, but by putting in the hard work to get there. “I worked really hard and did hundreds and hundreds of shows every year. I started on January 2, 2006. I continue to get more comfortable on stage.”

HITTING THE BIG TImE Landing the role on “Whitney” has been a major leap for Chris’ career and has made him “What’s Hot” for 2012. “I was on a series last year called ‘Glory Daze’ about college in the 80’s where I played a burnout weed smoker. People who watched the show really liked it, but not that many people watched the show. I did have fans approach me though. Both of them.” Not the case with Whitney. “Man, that show has just been crazy. It seems almost like if you haven’t at least heard of it you’ve been living under a rock,” he laughs. “I guess I’m a little too close to be impartial though. “The show is everywhere, so it’s been cool. A lot more people are coming out to my shows to see me live now, which is so cool man,” he says with the utmost satisfaction in his voice.” There’s little doubt that at a major campus comedy event, like hosting Chris D’Elia, the students’ attendance would be healthy from being part of the millions seeing Chris on NBC every week.

WHO YOU KNOW This amazing opportunity for Chris came not through the traditional acting route of dogged auditions, but once again a gift given to him by his first love. “I knew Whitney from open mics five or six years ago,” he says. “Sometimes you just bond with someone that you see all the time in such weird situations like standup and we became friends. A few years ago, she came to me and said ‘Hey, I wrote a part for you.’ You hear that all the time in L.A. and it typically doesn’t mean anything,” he says cooly, shrugging. “So I was like ‘All right. Cool.’ So she says, ‘Yeah, I sold it and it’s moving forward with NBC. I want you to come audition for it.’” After getting over the shock and three auditions for the right people, Chris landed the gig. “I jumped through all the hoops and ended up with the part. Basically she just handed me a golden opportunity and said ’Don’t screw it up.’”

14, CAMPUS ACTIvITIES MAGAzINE®, JANUARY 2012

SUCK IT UP WITH A STRAW ANd SmILE As I mentioned earlier about the Twitter feeds, and in the context of Chris’ family banter, it’s not hard to see how Whitney has a good time with him. “Oh yeah, she gives me so much shit. It’s funny and we laugh about it a lot. It’s how we treat each other in real life though,” he says with a crooked half smile. “She tries to put me in my place a lot...because...because…” (quietly as if by wrote) “she’s the boss. “But I like it,” he says good naturedly. “I know it comes from a place of affection, just like with my family.”

WHY SHOULd I CARE? COLLEGES: Bringing things back to our neck of the woods, here is your chance to get Chris while he’s HOT. How Hot? How likely are YOU to be the first campus in your area, in your STATE to host Chris D’Elia? Outside of L.A, who’s really gotten to see Chris live? “Honestly, I haven’t gone out on the road too much, because we have been doing so much filming and I haven’t had time. I have played New York, which was funny. In L.A., things are different, no one cares about anything but A-list stars. If I go into a trendy restaurant, I’m the least famous guy there, so no one cares. But when I went to New York to play Caroline’s, it was really cool. There are the people who don’t care about minor celebrities in New York, but there were also a lot more people who were excited to approach me about ‘Whitney.’ People definitely came out to see me, which is an amazing feeling.”

clubs for younger, sharper (or at least not intoxicated-ideally) campus crowds. “I have done some colleges,” he says. “I like it. First of all, I feel like that is my demographic. When I look at the correspondence I get online, mostly it’s people between their teens and 30’s, so I feel very comfortable with that age range.” Chris does appreciate the intricacies dividing a crowd of teenagers, 30-somethings, and the campus audience. “College crowds can be tricky. Many people in college are at a point when they are figuring out who they are and have many strongly formed opinions. So in a comedy set, when you touch on something that they don’t gel with, they will let you know. But I have fun regardless and as long as I am having fun, they are having fun and I am doing my job.”

BOOK ‘Em dANO Chris D’Elia is going to be on a fast rise in 2012; catch this star by the tail while you can. Suppose how folks might react on your campus in Nebraska or Missouri or South Carolina. “I don’t know how people will react in places they’re not used to seeing people who are on Tv. I don’t think they’ll be screaming in the streets, but I do look forward to some great comedy shows with packed houses thanks to the exposure from NBC.”

BRINGING IT HOmE When it comes to campus dates, just because Chris has been too busy to tour since ‘Whitney’ blew up doesn’t mean he’s not ready to perform outside the www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

ith some shows, you get a flashy look. Some have top-name billing and still others are so completely unique that hosting them is a one of a kind experience. Midwest Dueling Pianos guarantees to be a one of a kind experience, but with this show, it’s all about personality. We’re joined by mastermind Brian Griffin, as well as touring players Dave, Rusty, Alesha and Joe. All are young, energetic and talented players from this troupe and each adds a bit of their own flavor to the punch bowl. “We come from the Midwest, as you might have imagined,” says Alesha who, if genetic talent is a barometer, is dually qualified for the job (her brother is currently on tour playing for Bruno Mars). “It’s not as adversarial as the name suggests. Rather than a competition, think of it more as a set of human jukeboxes that play off of each other. Two is better than one. It includes requests of course but with a lot of banter and interaction with the audience thrown in,” she says.

“And saying lots of ridiculous and random things,” pipes in Rusty, as they all share a knowing laugh. This isn’t a canned show; there’s quite a bit done off the cuff. “I think that’s what separates us from some of the other guys in the industry,” Brian says. “We get bored easily (laughs). I could never be a standup comedian because the third time I had to do the same bit I would lose interest. When the audience sees us laughing on stage, it isn’t because we are laughing on cue,

we are actually laughing because we are having a good time. I don’t think any of us would be able to simply deliver stock lines, canned laughter and really enjoy this.” The enjoyment comes from spontaneity, which is increased even further by the players mixing it up for each other, and letting the audience in on the joke. “We like throwing curve balls to one another,” Rusty says. “We feed off of each other a lot on stage, and it is really fun to make your partner laugh. Sometimes, it can be enough that they mess up on the song they’re playing, which is pretty darn satisfying to us and the audience,” he laughs. “Joe is the king of dry wit,” Brian says. “It seems like he says hardly anything at all, but gets the biggest laughs consistently.” Interactivity is high with this show, with the audience having as much influence over the set as the performers do. “We let the crowd control things too,” Alesha says. “Every crowd is different, so to try to play scripted lines out won’t always work; we have to play off the crowd and every one of them provides something different.” “Every night is completely different, and that is completely awesome,” says Dave. Covering all kinds of music is MDP’s trade, and they do it well. Whether tastes shift regionally or culturally depending on the student body of the campus they are on, the players can play favorites and take requests from

16, CAMPUS ACTIvITIES MAGAzINE®, JANUARY 2012

genres of all kinds, including those not traditionally considered native to the piano. “It is not as hard as you might think,” Joe says. “It’s kind of like when you are saying to someone, “Hey you know that song? The one that goes ‘duh, duh-duh-dun, da-da?’ Well, playing new songs is kind of like that, we use our experience, memory and the audience to explore new songs and ground. If you get the melody and the hook right, people can sing along and help fill in the rest even if we are only somewhat familiar with the request.” “That challenge is a perk of the job,” Alesha says. “We have fun being goofballs and playing around, but we are also serious musicians too. The challenge of taking a part a song that may not be designed for piano and making it come alive in our show is a thrilling task to explore. It doesn’t always work, but when it (mostly) does, the crowd connects even more because there is a sort of cathartic experience in all of us learning a new song together. They get to see the process from the other side for once.” This event is a time for students to loosen up, relax, be free, enjoy each others’ company (along with the players) and just get down and boogie. With several touring troupes and dates across the campus, military and private events markets, they are a high demand act that is surprisingly affordable and easy to work with. BOOK IT! A new wave of magicians seems to be sweeping the campus market, and cutting edge young performers like Norman Ng are at the vanguard. This is due to several elements; lots of experience, a killer work ethic and tons of originality bringing in unique ideas not before included in traditional magic shows. Where else are you going to see tricks with cell phones, samurai swords, and lightbulbs mysteriously filled with milk? While he’s cutting edge and fresh, he’s also bringing a ton of experience along and some unique skill sets in his approach as well. “The thing that separates me is my background in innovation in magic, performing and even the overall customer experience. I have been doing magic since I was eight years old and I’m 28 now, so I have a lot of time on many of the newer acts in the market.” What can be easy to miss when looking for a quality novelty entertainer is that when someone’s press materials look good or they have hundreds or even thousands of Facebook fans, it means they’re good at marketing, not necessarily performing. “It seems like there’s a sort of trend for newer magicians, where their first professional performances are on college campuses, whereas when I started, I had built up lots of experience down in the trenches; I was performing on the street, at birthday parties, fairs, festivals...pretty much everywhere a performer has to truly fight for attention. That created a perspective for me when creating magic. I knew it had to be energetic, unique and noticeable. These same aspects that draw a curious crowd in public environments lend themselves perfectly to performing for campus audiences.”

He wanted everything to be in-your-face. “Instead of doing a typical card trick, I wanted to smash someone’s cell phone, or swing a sword around, or pour milk out of a sealed light bulb. I am there to really get people’s attention and in 20 years of performing magic for people of all walks of life, I have gotten pretty good at it.” Besides just hustling for tips, Norman competed in many magic competitions, honing his craft to an edge that would cut through not only lay audiences, but even the magic elite. “I think that helped drive me. I couldn’t just do average magic tricks, I was competing against the best magicians in the world. Everything had been done before. It forced me to sit down and create things that even no magician had seen before.” It was a natural progression of success based steps that led Norman to the college market, and we have a unique talent to show for it. If you’re getting tired of seeing the same tricks, “magic far from the norm” might be just the ticket. “I used to do an entire act based on flashlights and I was the only guy (that I know of) in the entire world that did something like that. I made hundreds of flashlights appear on stage with no jacket or conceivable place to hide anything, which got great reactions. So even from around age 15, I was innovating and creating new magic and approaches.” There is a significant difference between Norman and what you might call a “magic geek” or someone who dedicates their time to the method, gadgetry and history of magic with very little mind for the entertainment value necessary for public performance. Similar to art critics, they see things the average viewer doesn’t, and have distorted tastes because of it. Magicians behave similarly, often more worried

18, CAMPUS ACTIvITIES MAGAzINE®, JANUARY 2012

about a trick outwitting other magicians than they are the intrinsic entertainment value of the experience for a true enjoyer of magic. “Many magicians do lose touch with who their audience is. With my vast performance experience, I can say that out of all the similar acts performing in the market near my age, I have probably done the most total number of career performances. I have logged well over 3,000 now, for every different kind of audience. There was a time there where I caught myself going down the rabbit hole of being a little bit too concerned with the ‘how’ and not enough with the ‘wow,‘ but I never lost touch with who my audience was. Whether it is for a corporate event or for magicians, little kids or college students, I can tune in more because of the breadth of my experience. My first professional show was at twelve. Between 18-21, I was logging almost 400 shows a year.” Norman has performed on close to 400 different college campuses. “That number is a bit elusive though because those are actually different campuses and doesn’t include repeat performances. “Compared to a great hypnotist, a magician won’t get as many repeat bookings, but I get a lot. To guess, I’d say probably a third of my yearly dates are repeats from the previous year, and 80% of my dates are repeats for previous clients who skip a year or two between.” BOOK IT! DAWN OF THE FIRST GENERATION: Now that Campus Activities Today Magazine had firmly established itself, it was able to attract a host of new advertisers who found the publication invigorating. While there were other options in the marketplace, CAT was the first magazine to specifically deliver entertainment and related activities directly to the campus buyers. As a result, the magazine grew in exposure and advertising revenue. Perhaps one of the most critical changes during the early 1993 era was the implementation of cutting edge creative software and new Apple workstations that allowed the publication to develop a cleaner and more professional look. What this meant to the buyers at colleges is that not only would they have the opportunity to book traditional campus acts, but larger companies representing new creative opportunities and celebrity entertainment had been impressed with the audience that CAT was delivering. The January 1993 issue featured a clean and impressive cover of legendary campus rockers, Rhythm Corps but was filled with opportunities for buyers from live novelty acts and games to speakers, comedy and music. It even included an accounting of a full day on the road with the Carusos written by Mike Caruso. The very first Campus Activities LIVE! ever, featured Winthrop University and the school’s new DSA, Boyd Jones. That year, the very first Reader’s Choice Awards Ballot appeared beginning a history of a National Awards process for the campus market that would be the ultimate honor for artists, schools and agencies. February 1993 celebrated the first anniversary of CAT’s publishing. The cover story was on one of the campus market’s favorite ventriloquists, Dan Horn. And there was an amazing feature on Jane

Powell with a real inside look at her music (she played the part of Effie in the touring version of the Broadway show “Dream Girl”). In this interview, Kirby confessed: “Thank God she’s black because it is through people like Jane and her music that we can learn about history. While a lot of it is truly depressing to be reminded of, Jane takes you on a journey of the more enjoyable side of her heritage. While I would certainly be remiss to think everything she subjects us to forgives everything else that has happened throughout history, the songs involving life and joy and love from the black perspective are remarkable.” March 1993 offered campuses the first annual National Awards process that truly took in ALL the campuses in the nation. Who were the winners? Barbara Bailey Hutchison took Best Acoustic Performance and Best Small Concert; Robin Crow won Best Solo Performance and Best Major Concert; Harp player, Harvi Griffin won Best Performing Arts Entertainer; Tim Settimi won Best Performing Arts Entertainer / Theatre; Dances With Wolves won Best Motion Picture; Wynton Marsalis won Best Jazz Performance; Jane Powell won Best Contemporary Artist; Rick Kelley won Best Male Performer; Regency won Best Contemporary Group; Carrot Top won Best Comedy Entertainer; The Spencers Illusion Team took home Best Special Event, Best Touring Event and Best Live

Derek Wilson from Winthrop University covered the NACA National Conference for 1993. April 1993’s edition featured the (now late) Denny Dent. At the height of his career, he was one of the most in-demand artists playing campus dates. His “Two Fisted Art Attack” was legendary and started an entire cult of imitators who followed him. Other features included a new program from David Coleman called “Creative Dating,” A feature on how to book a Carnival for your campus, and blues legends John Lee Hooker and The Robert Cray Band.

Jay Mohr was the “golden boy” of campus comedy and the cover story in August 1993’s Comedy Buyer’s Edition. Other top comedians featured were John Henson, Nancy Parker, Elon Gold, A.J. October’s 1993 Music issue cover featured Sonia Frank’s disappear fear. Hot music included The Voltage Brothers, Beth Hart, Danny Blitz & The New FBI, The Niagaras, Four On The Floor, The Fabulous Flashbacks, Tom Acousti and Mike Brannon. CA LIVE takes on the small school perspective with Lyndon State University. Our Arts Feature was an exclusive interview with Don McLean on “The Day The Music Died”. And our cultural diversity piece was on Inner Circle, whose song “Bad Boys” was burning up the charts. The movie reviewed was Indecent Proposal. November 1993’s Lecture Issue featured actor Lou Diamond Phillips. Part Cherokee, his lecture was on the Native American Plight. Hot speakers included Bill Demby (an athlete who overcame the tragedy of losing both legs in Vietnam), Bob Harris on “Who Shot JFK”, Sarah Weddington, Phyllis Schlafly, Carol Beck, Douglas Adams, Wally “Famous” Amos, Joe Clark (subject of the film Lean on Me). Plus there

was a section of “Performing The Arts.” How to buy and program the arts, from touring Broadway shows to agencies like CAMI who specialize in the arts. Featured artists and shows were, Maynard Ferguson, Michael McClure & Ray Manzarek, Cleveland Ballet’s Dancing Wheels, and The Confessions of Stepin Fetchit. AND campus board members told us what they did on summer vacation. January 1994 was our most legendary magazine ever printed. It featured one of the last interviews EVER from comedian Bill Hicks. Arranged for us by Tom DeLuca with Hick’s manager, Duncan Strauss, Hick’s dark comic reputation was only excelled by his incredible intellectual genius. Out of print now, copies have been rumored to have sold for over $200. CA Live was at Tullio Nieman’s Colby College and we had the chance to go back stage at Seinfeld’s. The Art’s Showcase featured the impeccable jazz of the Turtle Island String Quartet. This issue was dedicated to Miss Emmie, publisher W.C. Kirby’s mother, who passed away December 6, 1993. February 1994’s cover featured Comedian Gary Delena who proclaimed that one out of every two comedy shows was on a campus somewhere in America. And Campus Activities Today celebrated the contributions of Black Americans. Featured were Ben Vereen, Byron Motley, Darryl Van Leer and Wynton Marsalis. In March 1994, Campus Activities Today Magazine announced the winners of their 2nd National Readers Choice Awards with Craig Karges on the cover as Entertainer of the Year (He also won Best Solo Performer and Best Performing Arts Act). In this issue Kirby announced that Bill Hicks had died on February 26 at 32, just weeks after his CAT cover story was published and New York Entertainment announced Dave Chappelle’s 1994 college tour saying “catch him while you can!” April 1994 featured Dave Rudolf on the cover. Dave is known for his universal audience appeal and especially shows that include children. The University of Central Florida was featured in CA Live! There was coverage of NASCO (The National Association of Christian Student Organizations). Hot

Programs included Sexy or Sexist by Gail Dines, Ph.D.; Dr. Jean Kilbourne; Designer Babies; Kurt Vonnegut; Carole Simpson; Dr. Timothy Leary and Kieu Chinh. Utah’s Weber State University was featured in CA LIVE! And the Dream Date contest was introduced where schools could choose from over 20 different shows for their Dream Date if they won. October 1994 featured one of the campus market’s hottest shows and the #1 Beatles Show In the world, 1964 - The Tribute. Kirby did a story on why music was still a viable option for programmers and artists featured included Gene Cotton, Willy Porter, Say-So and others. CA Live! was at The College of Charleston in South Carolina. November 1994’s cover was blessed with a feature on Mary Wilson, one of the legendary Supremes and she tells the story that will be revealed decades later in the movie Dream Girls. A thorough story on Arts offerings included Dance Brazil, Amy Pivar Dancers, Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe Live!, Jane Comfort & Company, Lisa Sokolov, Jai Uttal, Bootsy Collins and Buffalo Guitar Quartet. And APCA began with an insert offering their new conference in Savannah Georgia. Bob Harris was featured too with “Inside America’s Politics.”

If there was one woman who had gained instant recognition in the campus market, it was Teresa. She was featured on the cover of January 1995 and it would not be the only time. This issue featured female performers and others featured were Barbara Bailey Hutchison, Bertice Berry, Linda Ronstatdt, Layman’s Daughter, Jane Gillman, Darcie Deaville, Sandra Reaves, Lisa Jones and The Shirelles. CA LIVE! featured Saint Joseph College in Hartford CT. February 1995 celebrated the solo performer with Tom Acousti on the cover. April 1995 featured Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women and their unique music style. There was a complete feature on novelty game attractions and what to expect when you buy them. There was an interview with Wilma Carroll to discover

what it was like to be a guest on David Letterman. Live novelty featured the Magic of Stuart and Lori plus Beyond Imagination with Hypnotist Jim Wand. CA Live! was at Mars Hill College, a favorite place for artists to play. Talk about a legendary Southern Rock Legend, Charlie Daniels was on he cover of October 1995. And for those campuses without the bucks for Charlie, we gave them an alternative in Dakkota, a country music group that was really gaining popularity. And what about other up-and-coming artists that we featured? How about Bill Maher, Larry Miller, Royale Watkins or this crazy guy, Carlos Mencia! Featured agency of this issue was American Pro-

gram Bureau who represented Mikhail Gorbachev. The predecessor to APCA’s Student Activities Journal, APCA Insider, appeared in this issue of CAT. Over the next couple of issues, readers found outstanding contemporary offerings for speakers. November 1995 featured Former US Surgeon General, Dr. Joycelyn Elders in a story called “No Regrets”. This story was intimate and tender and no subject was taboo for our interview. CA LIVE! was at the University of Georgia and a rock opera from Halifax invaded the U.S. campus market... Dorian had a huge cult following. The NY Bistro Award winning show, “Come Out, Come Out, Whatever You Are!” was the show for the moment where childhood transforms into adulthood and attracted a lot of attention with buyers. I think you can see the evolution of this magazine and why it has gained so much attention nationally. Kirby’s aim early on was to give campuses the widest variety of programming available. “We can do what most showcases can’t,” he offered. “It is not often that rapidly developing artists and certainly not often celebrity acts would showcase at a campus conference. We try to give our audience the widest spectrum possible. If they can catch an act while they are developing and just starting to get the buzz going, many times they can pick up an affordable date. BUT whether or not they can afford what is on the cover, we get them inside to read the magazine and then offer them alternatives that can fit within their price range. There are campuses who want to spend the money for a big attraction and we can provide those. But for all the others that can’t, the magazine and our advertisers are ready to provide them with the options they need.” In February we take on 1996-1998!

This has been an exciting issue! We tried to bring you “What’s Hot for 2012” and we hope we hit the mark. We think we did, foremost by landing the cover story on Chris D’Elia, a talent with an undeniably big future at a rate that many campuses can afford. Especially when you consider CAM’s EXCLUSIVE Price Lock of $9999 for Chris, just by mentioning the cover story for dates booked February through May. We think that price will be a distant memory soon and those who take advantage of the deal will have a “we booked him when” story to tell.

And finally, we come to the Reader’s Choice Awards. This has been an incredibly exciting year for nominations, with an unparalleled number of people participating. Thanks to hosting the polls on Facebook, the ability for us and the artists seeking nominations far exceeded previous years, allowing us to go viral. The numbers don’t lie: In JUST the Entertainer of The Year Category, there were 1,607 votes, 1,411 people talking about it, 63 comments and 21,138 people reached with impressions!

We don’t expect you to simply take our word for it, so here’s a little history to back up our track record. One year ago this month, we featured Donald Glover on the cover. At that point, The Childish Gambino was just gaining recognition for his role on NBC’s “Community.” His standup and his interesting hybrid career with music was not as well known. He was just breaking into widespread campus dates and had previously been unexposed to our market outside of the sitcom.

As for the rest of this issue, We think our other feature on Norman Ng is well deserved. He’s proven himself to be one of the most interesting, innovative and well-respected magicians currently serving the market and his career curve is headed up. This is one magician you know you can book and are guaranteed to see a show completely different that anything seen before. The “What’s Hot” section itself offers a wide array of acts in every genre, price range and from agencies across the board. There’s something for everyone in there, from established artists set to have a great year to the up-and-comers hoping to get noticed. We invite you to check them all out, and mention where you saw them.

Congrats to all our Artist Report Card nominees, they certainly earned the spots and an especially BIG THANKS to all the schools submitting ARCs throughout the year. Your feedback is our barometer for the industry. Check out our Summer Issue at (www.bit.ly/camsummer) to see all our ARCs from the 2010-11 school year. The actual voting process will be a bit more limited than the nominations. Promoting and linking on Facebook will still occur, but the voting itself will be on our new website at www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com The only caveat is that voters must vote from either a .edu email address or from a domain they own (as in @myagency.com or @thisartist.net). This is to keep voting limited to campus audiences having experience with activities and programming events.

Now, Donald has almost 500,000 Twitter followers, was featured as The “Childish Gambino” as a music act on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and “Conan,” had a supporting role in the 2011 “Muppets” movie and his Comedy Central special “Weirdo” aired just this past November. His “IAMDONALD” Tour made 23 stops in 33 days from April 16-May 19, 2011 to multiple sold out venues. His new tour starts March 16 in Atlanta with stops planned across the U.S. and Europe. Will Chris D’Elia have the atomic success of Glover? Who’s to know, but like the Magic 8-ball says, signs point toward yes. He is fresh, new to the campus market and has his mug on broadcast network TV in front of millions every week. Leno’s taken notice as have others; don’t be surprised to see Chris D’Elia’s price in multiples of what we’re offering here and his avails will be fractional. You heard it here first, so get to booking while the booking’s good.

Fastest Rising Star, 4.92 of 5 with 18 ARCs in 2011. Dr. John Corvino was nominated in the Best Speaker category with a 4.92 of 5 average at 10 different schools in 2011.

Track us on Facebook and Twitter for the official announcement of the polls opening, rules, regs and procedures. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR NOMINEES AND THANKS IN ADVANCE TO VOTERS. You decided the best in the industry. Awards announcement will be in April, but until then we have two BIG issues for you. February is our speakers issue, where we hope to have another great section of choices for “What’s Hot” tailored toward speakers with an exciting cover developing. In Total, all of the Reader’s Choice Awards categories combined netted an incredible 8,659 votes with 6,849 people talking about and sharing it, 349 total comments and an amazing reach, making impressions on 109,256 people!

March will include “What’s Hot for 2012” part II, where we will feature some great acts that didn’t make the initial cut this issue. And for the cover, few bands are hotter than AWOL Nation, set to be the feature for that issue.

THANK YOU. Thank you to all the artists, students, advisors and agents who got behind this process to make it truly cause a stir in our little world.

April’s cover will be decided by YOU, as the Entertainer Of The Year Award winner will grace it. Will it be Natalie Stovall, Christopher Carter, A Pair of Nuts, Michael Kent or Craig Karges? We can’t wait to see!

With all of the excitement of the Facebook polls, we can’t overlook our outstanding Artist Report Card AllStars. After all, only TWO of the nominees were chosen from Facebook polling. The two other nominees in each category were chosen by their outstanding Artist Report Card averages over ALL OF 2011. Here’s a couple highlights: Christopher Carter was nominated for Entertainer of The Year with a 4.99125 out of 5 average with 16 ARCs!

Until next time, join me in the conversation on Twitter or Facebook! Ian Kirby, EDITOR, CAM Last Call Find me on Twitter! Twitter.com/IanKirby Writes

Craig Karges, EOTY, 4.98785 of 5 with 14 ARCs. Adam Grabowski was nominated in Comedy and
